The Light of Darkness #4

Nefarious Echoes

Rate this book
Evil lurks in the shadows. More demon villages are left decimated, and the Panther tribe is torn apart.

In her new role as Matriarch, Anaya fights to keep the Panther demons united, yet trust seems impossible to gain. Especially as rumours surface about the death powder being a Priesthood tactic. Neither Samael’s strength nor the power of the House of Fahd seem to be enough to stem the Primes’ discontent.

Anaya must rally the priests, hunt down those responsible for the rising death toll of demons, and clear the Priesthood’s name.

Samael, in turn, must prove his worth to earn the respect lost when taking a priestess for his Consort. Not an easy task, when enemies seek to destroy the unworthy Matriarch and his illegitimate child.

Anaya prays for strength, and that the Goddess – or whatever She may be – would aid them in their peril. And yet, no reprieve is granted, for either demon tribes or Priesthood.

Will the Panther tribe stand strong under the House of Fahd? And will the Priesthood restore their tarnished name?

With yet another enemy lurking in the shadows, waiting for the perfect time to strike, the future could not be more bleak for priests and panthers alike.

Now more than ever, Light and Darkness must unite and stand firm against the terrifying dangers encroaching on all sides.

Will this be their final hour? Or will they prevail?

The Light of Darkness series is intended for a mature audience, containing sensitive subjects including violence, torture, consequences of sexual abuse, emotional scars, mature language, and steamy scenes.

The Light of Darkness is perfect for readers who enjoy visceral, gripping High and Epic fantasy tales with dark undertones and romance.

After setting the groundworks in The Resurgence of Light, this 4th book of the Light of Darkness really kicks it up a notch. It's fast-paced, full of action, romance, and intrigue, and absolutely packed with characters to love!

Anaya and Samael struggle to unify their tribe, a mercenary band is up to no good, a mysterious employer diverts blame to the Priesthood, and the priests themselves scramble to clear their names.
Then MORE happens! More battles, more blood, and more danger, but also characters become more involved amongst each other, and the banter and snark between some of them is a thing to behold. It was incredibly entertaining!

In fact, the entire book is amazing from cover to cover, but the last third of this book? I devoured it like there was no tomorrow! The suspense on each page, those mini cliffhangers as everything begins to unfold... I won't divulge due to spoilers, but my advice is to have the time to finish once you start, because you'll want to!

And good Lord, that ending...! Give me book 5 already!!

This was another incredible instalment in The Light of Darkness series, where we follow the lives of Anaya the Priestess and Samael her demon lover who are now leaders of the House of Fahd. Various factions have issues with both the Fahd panther tribe and the leaders themselves. In the meantime, a group of mercenaries is spreading death and destruction throughout the land, via a lethal powder, on the payroll of a mysterious employer.

The mercenaries aren’t all bad though. Gus, one of the fighters, is engaged in a tender courtship with Nia, a black serving woman, who has slowly moved up the ranks from being a lowly prostitute. Now she’s a vital part of the Unn team, but she and Gus want to break away and live an honest life.

Phew! And that’s without all the other twists and turns, great characters with their own issues and subplots weaving together to make this one monster of a high fantasy series.

Russell writes fight scenes extremely well. They are difficult to choreograph but I was convinced. There were no jarring moments at all. Equally, she also knows how to portray the passion between Anaya and Samael, now married with a son as well as a kingdom to to keep safe. Their intimate moments are beautiful and sexy. I’ve loved the progression of their relationship throughout the series so far. Out of all the characters, they are my absolute favourites.

And here is the thing. I don’t read fantasy. I can’t engage with it. There are too many characters and I easily lose the thread….

… until I read this, that is. I can honestly say this is one fantasy series I will stay with until the bitter end. I’m totally invested in these characters and their trials and tribulations. It’s a testament to the skill of the author that she has kept my interest this far, and will continue to do so.

Anaya, Samael & Lilith face their greatest challenge, who or what is killing entire clans/ villages of demons! The UNN, paid assassins, working for whoever has the most gold... but who is their real employer...priest ? the king? or a hidden faction..? Who is this Jaxsom ? What was the holy father hiding before his death?

The Master Primes of the other clans have thrown the blame of these deaths solely at the feet of Anaya and walked away.

Samael, head of the Panther Clan will not tolerate anything that causes his priestess, his beloved...sadness, pain or heaven forbid physical harm...heads will roll !

Who is behind all this death and destruction?
Can Anaya & Samael over come this battle to save the Panther Clan and all of Demonkind ?
Who can Anaya and Samael trust?
With all the betrayal, death and destruction a blessing will be brought into this mix but will it be enough or even see the light of day...
This is a riveting edition to the saga of Anaya and Samael.

Catrin Russell plunges us back into the heart of the war with the demons in Nefarious Echoes! Anaya struggles to adapt to her new leadership role as the demon tribes fall ever closer to fracturing. This is only made more complicated by a bout of scandal racking Samael and his choice of Consort. I really enjoyed the new layers of intrigue Russell brought to her already twisting tale! I’ve always loved the interaction between Anaya and Samael, but the conflict and intrigue of Echoes brings it to a deeper level. If you love epic fantasy with a tinge of dark and a shade of romance, definitely come battle through the war of demons and hearts in Nefarious Echoes!

Like the rest of the series, I was impressed with Nefarious Echoes by Catrin Russell. It was interesting to continue reading about this world and characters. Even so, hope it doesn’t continue going on for several more books and lose steam, which I dislike in series’. Five stars.

Five epic Stars💫💫💫💫💫 for Nefarious Echoes by Catrin Russell

There is so much going on in this fourth fabulous book of the Light of Darkness series, I guess I need to address the different storylines separately.

📕Anaya and Samael are still struggling with the consequences of their union. The house of Fahd has fallen from grace, the panther tribes are dissolving their alliances. Even worse, threats are made against the family, because change requires an open mind, yet some Primes are unwilling to accept a Priestess as Matriarch. Hope lies in an event called “The Obsidian Trials” where panthers of all tribes can show their strength and gain prestige. Will it be enough to convince the tribes that Anaya and the Priesthood don’t pose a threat to the Demons? M
💖 I totally rooted for Anaya in her relentless struggle to keep her family, her son and her tribe safe. Catrin beautifully describes the struggle of a mother to protect her own, no matter the cost to herself.

📗The second storyline deepens the insights into the Unn, a mercenary group with a questionable employer. What is behind the sinister motive of spreading powder onto wares? Why is the payment extremely high for such a simple task?
💞I thoroughly enjoyed the budding relationship between Nia and Gus, who is torn between earning easy money and love for a girl. Will greed ruin their chance for a better life in the end? The twists and turns in their relationship had me on the edge of my seat until the end.

📘The third storyline had me laugh aloud more than once. While Kaedin is tasked with the investigation of mysteriously perished Demon villages, he has to report to Samael’s mother Lilith. But are reports all she requests of him, or does she follow a different agenda when she summons him at unusual hours?
❤️‍🔥The dance between these two headstrong characters is truly enjoyable.

If you enjoy intertwined storylines full of heart and love, combined with epic battles of body and mind, be assured you won’t be able to put down this book!

I originally read this book as a beta copy and now enjoyed the finished version to write my review. I loved reading it again. This is definitely a book you can read more than once.

My family could barely drag me away from this book! As I said in my reviews on the previous books in this series, the story just gets better and better with each book! The plot thickens and expands brilliantly, adding new characters that are totally intricate to the storyline. There is lots of mystery and intrigue, as well as the characters evolving. What's cool about this is that we get to follow each of these pertinent characters, through their daily lives, as they are faced with their inhibitions, their hope and their choices, so that everything makes perfect sense. As Nia and Gus' characters are explored, I couldn't help but relate their experiences to the world today. I loved the hope this series brings forth.Everyone errs but one's past does not define one, anyone can change, irrespective of one's deeds. As Anaya and Samael try desperately to hold on to a peaceful existence and collaboration between demons and humans, there are forces doing their utmost to undermine their efforts, going as far as to set up the Priesthood as the instigators and perpetrators. The fight to correct this is almost impossible to achieve, as they find themselves questioned at every turn. Discovering more of the history and culture of the demons is really fascinating, a true literary masterpiece. As Anaya and her friends try to figure out how to neutralise the discontent demons, they discover the enemy may not only be demons. At one particular point, my heart was in my throat as they are attacked on 3 different fronts, such well defined scenes, totally credible and exciting. At the book draws to an end, we get a glimpse of who is behind the attacks on the demons and as with each book so far, I'm looking forward to how the story progresses. All I know is that there is not a single moment that doesn't compel me to know more! Absolutely fabulous reading! Thank goodness there's more to come...

I got so absorbed by this book that my coworkers had to throw stuff on me to get my attention.
The amazing adventures of Anaya, Samael and the rest of the gang takes a new turn, working out the disagreements that followed the new alliance and at the same time facing a new, faceless adversary.
The introduction of Gus was something really special to me because of his native language and his backstory.

Poor Anaya surrounded by betrayals and hate whilst so many tribes of demons are being completely wiped out and nothing the priesthood do seems to be getting them any answers. Worse still rumours are pointing at the priesthood themselves to be behind the demon culling. Anaya has to rally everyone behind her if she is to succeed in saving the lives of more tribes being wiped out, and she has to go out with the priesthood herself to aid in the healing. Samael obviously is not happy for her to risk her life in this manner but they have no other choice and he himself must prove himself strong in front of the other primes who were questioning his right to rule the Fahd house. A massive battle takes place on two fronts at the same time and many lives are lost on both sides, with aid coming from those least expected. However the power of the light is strong and the belief in the goddess shines on both in Anaya as well as in Landa who performs to the best of her abilities both as healer and as more than that in this book. This series is so incredible, it keeps me reading through the night involving me so totally in the unravelling plot full of twists and turns, betrayal, loyalty and love. Can the priesthood and the Fahd house survive this fractioning taking place?

Nefarious Echoes is the fourth book in the completed The Light of Darkness series by Catrin Russell. There I was, thinking Anaya had finally found her place but the beginning of the book plunges the reader, along with our championed female MC headlong into the next disaster, continuing seamlessly from the ending of the previous book, The Resurgence of Light. And for once, it seems beyond the priestess’ powers to cope on her own. Old alliances are split, old friends become enemies and new connections are formed.

Nefarious Echoes also introduces a host of new characters. After the upheavals in the previous book, one would expect an interval of rest for frayed nerves but Russell drives the plot relentlessly onwards. At times, I wasn’t sure if I could take any more. And I mean that in the most positive sense of the word. Too vivid are the scenes, playing out in my head as if they were happening around me. I had the feeling as if I was watching on a big screen in a 3D movie theatre with surround sound.

The emotional plunges were so deep that you would wonder how your heart has not yet shattered. The storytelling is superb, the characters practically leap off the page and the fast pace of the story, that nevertheless doesn’t lack all the necessary details, moves the plot forward, be it through political strategizing, interpersonal relationships, elegantly written steamy romantic scenes, new ways of light healing, battling or witty banter. Far more than a handful of times, I was leaping out of my seat, I was so invested in the story throughout.

I felt for and with the characters, from good over morally grey to downright evil, they were all multi-layered personalities which made them so realistic. And that goes for humans and demons alike. It was easy to embrace new characters and fall in love with already familiar ones that were moved to a more prominent position in this new instalment.

There were new parallel strands of subplots that seemed separate from each other at first but then, over the course of the book, got artfully interwoven and connections became finally apparent, leaving me stunned more than once at the unexpected developments, even though not all mysteries were resolved – old and new. Then again, we have two more books to read in the series and there must be something left to be said or there wouldn’t be two thick tomes yet.

There is another great battle episode further towards the end. Now you would think, a good high epic fantasy tale lives off these martial highlights and they have definitely served well in the previous instalments, providing much exciting action and suspense. But this one is different. This is quite literally the “Mother of all Battles” and once you read it for yourself, you will understand the intended pun.

I have been raving and gushing about the author’s previous books already and, o ye of little faith, was unable to imagine how this story could rise to even greater heights in this book. However, let me assure you, it does! I bawled like a baby, tears streaming down my cheeks while sobs wracked my body. I clenched my teeth so hard at the suspense that I had to take painkillers for the resulting headache (but it was all worth it, so don’t let that put you off!). At times, my heart broke and then it opened wide and flowed over with love, being so deeply touched. I don’t like to include any spoilers but for this book, I had to put at least a little, which is right at the end and marked, so you ought to stop reading further down before you haven’t read this book yourself.

There are a myriad of examples I could give to show you the author’s great storytelling but this is already turning into one of the longest reviews I’ve ever written. And yet, I feel it is wholly inadequate when trying to do this book justice. The events are often unforeseen, surprising with many twists and turns, so don’t spoil your own reading experience when it comes to the spoiler section below. You’d rob yourself of a wild adventure ride that I embarked on while reading.

So I will leave you with vague assertions as to plot and characters and the advice to make sure you’ve also read the prequels you can download for free when signing up for the author’s mailouts. They are also available in print (and grace my special bookshelf). Reading them is not strictly necessary but it will give you some deeper insight into the backstory of Edric’s past and the beginnings of the priesthood and their fight against demons, thus providing you with an enriched experience when reading the series proper.

Some characters that were less prominent in previous instalments were given more of a central platform here and even the king makes an appearance. My new favourite characters have grown on me in just this way, providing the kind of frustration you get from a superbly constructed slowburn romantic subplot, intelligent wit that triggers belly laughs and the strongest urge to fight shoulder-to-shoulder with them in perilous situations. All of this and more in this one book.

A last piece of advice I’d like to provide you with is a list of items to keep handy: a bottle of something strong, tissues – lots of them – a play sword, painkillers, and free hands to hold your belly or massage your jaw. A healthy smoothie to combat an extended book hangover may come in useful as well.

What a ride! I’m looking forward to reading Books 5 and 6, Wake of Sins and The Thousand Year Divide next! (Text below contains spoilers!)

SPOILER ALERT:

After asking the author’s permission to go into more detail because I will burst otherwise, I am going to comment here on some highlights that are spoilers, so I advise you to only read this part AFTER you’ve read the book!

My favourite character of all now is Kaedin, former knight in the King’s army and a high-ranking priest for the last twenty-five years. Together with the incomparable Lillith, mother of Samael and former matriarch, this pair has conquered my heart by storm. And their developing romance is a slowburn that gave me the female equivalent of blue balls. And dayummm, is Kaedin hot!

Of all the sexy men in this series, this one stood out to me the most as he is confident but not arrogant or overbearing. He knows what he wants and doesn’t let Lillith walk all over him but gives her a run for her money. He speaks with conviction and has a presence and charisma, cultivated over decades in leading positions, that the younger characters still somewhat lack. He is not without flaws, as are none of the characters who make them so real, but he stands and lives by his convictions.

Lillith, in her own right, is the strongest woman in the entire series. She is used to giving orders and people following them. She is unafraid of opposition, yet not reckless in her diplomatic relations. And Kaedin is the only person who manages to keep her off-balance. Their interaction and banter had me laughing out loud more than once:

“Where are your guards?” he asked.
“Outside.”
He gave her a flat look. “You left them out in the rain?”
“They won’t melt, Master Reed. Stop questioning me on the subject.”

And shortly afterwards, Lillith admits:

“You are too good to trifle with me, Master Reed.”

Do we detect a hint of insecurity in her otherwise impregnable armour?

On a more serious note, we learn of the spiritual origin of the two species, humans and demons, so beautifully explained to Anaya by the shaman that it brought tears to my eyes:

“Different races?” he chuckled. “My child, you still have much to learn. It is humans who have always believed there to be a distinction between humans and demons, yet truly, there is not. We were created equal in the Spirits’ images but individually blessed by them.”
Anaya blinked, her silence telling.
“Humans received the gift of light; potency, courage, yet also warmth, comfort and healing,” he continued. “Demons, however, were blessed by the darkness; power, self-sacrifice, independence, and endurance.”

And later:

“What are the Spirits?”
The grin on the old man’s face could not be contained. “Everything,” he simply stated. “The are the air around us, the ground beneath our feet, the water that flows in our creeks, and the fire that burns within us. They are the souls of every man and every woman to come, as they are of all those already lost. The Spirits are not a single deity, such as the one you depict as your Goddess, for the Spirit of Light is much more than that. The humans’ ability to control their inner light had long been forgotten until your late High Priest was blessed with the knowledge.”

And there is more after that which is so deep and there is so much metaphysical truth clad in the guise of this epic tale’s context and concepts.

There is so much more, I could go on for hours. The aforementioned battle alone took it so out of me, that I felt like I had run a marathon with survival-training style hurdles thrown in at regular intervals. Emotionally. Suffice it to say, when you read this, you will know what I mean and there won’t be a single page that you’ll find lacking. This book is just… WOW!

Just as good as the previous 3 in the series

With light and darkness joined in mutual respect it like the battles would lessen. Yet, in the 4th book not only do the battles continue but now there's a new threat that is trying to undo everything. This one will keep you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out who is an enemy and who is a friend. Catrin Russell is great at making us feel good for the bad guys and question the good guys.

Book 4 picks up just after book 3, with the Demon tribes still in disarray from the news that Anaya will be taking the role of Matriarch of the Panther tribe, as the Consort of Samael and he will be the Rightful heir of Faud Line and the Panther Demon Clan. Adena has taken up her role as head of the Priesthood, with Kaedin, Edric and Vixen all there to assist her.
Nefarious Echoes is a multi-faceted story, with several different story arcs revolving around the Demons and the Priesthood, as well as the mercenary band ‘The Unn’. Within each of these groups, there are the individual character story arcs that provide fascinating tales.
The story continues to follow our two main characters Anaya and Samael, the Priestess and the Demon who have come together across two warring Factions, and their love has not only ended the fighting, but uncovered the true Evil at the heart of the Priesthood, destroying it and then uniting both Factions. Now the Priesthood and Demons stand united against a common enemy, one that is spreading a deadly powder that is lethal to Demons.
As this book starts, a Demon Village is destroyed by this powder, and only the Priesthood can save them. As they tattered remnants of the Priesthood rally to try and help their new allies, still trying to recover from the betrayal of Ekelon, and the loses they have suffered, those within the Demon Tribes are not happy with their new Matriarch before she even started, let alone now that she has stepped into the role as their alleged leader. This plunges the Demon tribes into disarray, as several factions openly withdraw their support of the Panther tribe, some threatening actual revolt, whilst others threaten to withdraw. Meanwhile, there is the constant threat that more of the Demons will fall to this unknown powder.
There are multiple stories within this aspect of the story, not only between Anaya and Samael as expected, but some wonderful storylines between Samael and Lee as Samael tries to teach Lee how to control his Demon essences. There are also some really interesting storylines between members of the Priesthood and the Demon Hierarchy, most notably Lilith and Samael as this new relationship between the two party’s forms. Kaedin and Lilith’s interactions are intriguing in every aspect of the word, whilst those between Samael and Edric as well as the other members of the Priesthood are nothing but hilarious. There is a unique bond forming between Samael and Edric, and it is fascinating watching it unfold in these early stages.
One of the best parts of this book though are those The Unn. The mercenary band is a rather unusual collection of vagabonds and thieves, each with their own set of values. Amongst them is Gus, a man who keeps to himself for the most part, one who is a keen swordsman, with a very mysterious past. Gus is a mercenary though that still has values, whilst he might work for money, he still won’t do certain things, doing no harm to women and children for example. As such, he makes sure to look out for the young woman who has become attached to the camp, Nia. Nia has had a pretty horrendous past, and is now the camp cook. Nia has become attached to Gus, intrigued by the mystery of the man, as well as the fact that he is the one man in the camp who has treated her with some respect and some kindness. The simmering relationship that grows between the two throughout the book is not only utterly fascinating, but beautiful to watch.
On top of this is the actual mercenary band themselves, and their actions, which make up a greater part of the story (but I am not going to give away any spoilers). This adds such an element of depth to the story, you are constantly drawn into these plotlines and gritty mystery elements of what is a compelling story.
The character work is the key part to this book, as each of the characters represent these captivating, gritty and compelling people (and Demons), that you just can’t help but fall in love with. The character work is exceptional, telling in-depth and powerful stories, from those of the Priests, to the stunning world of the Demons.
The world-building is just outstanding, the intricate and multi-faceted world of the Demons is so well done. Added to that is this beautifully crafted world that the characters live in, that is like a medieval fantasy world, one in which the Priests have rediscovered a world of magic that has allowed them the ability to cast spells of the ‘light’ affinity.
There is some gritty combat, but the Author has written this in a way that although there are some brutal scenes, it is not overwhelmingly violent, there is not a huge amount of gore or blood. There are some references to torture I will note, but there is not any major discussion of this torture, it is just made reference to as a part of a characters history. Overall, the level of violence is well handed.
This is an Epic saga full of wonderful characters, riveting tales and built upon a thrilling world. It is an absolute must read for any fan of Fantasy.

A Bloody Sunrise

This is exactly what this book is, an omen for a tough and savage battle to come. I truly dread reading the last two books. If things were tough on this one the ones will only get worse as our characters get closer to discover who is messing with the demons and Priesthood alike.

But alas, I'm drifting from topic. Nefarious Echoes is another great addition to the Light of Darkness series. Here we get Anaya and Samael not only dealing with the unruly Primes who don't want them as Matriarch and Patriarch of the Panther tribe but also the unexplained deaths of various demon tribes around the Midlands.

The emotions are certainly high in this book, with tension and stress resounding through the characters and readers alike. The two sex scenes are pure art, especially the one between Anaya and Samael. I warn you, you'll need a cold shower after that scene, lol.

For readers who haven't read The Redeemed, you'll get to see more of Edric's tragic and traumatic past at the hands of the Haunted Shadows (I hate that criminal band so much even when they are dead by this point of the series). Edric's memory and all his traumas really got to me, making me cry.

I swear, this 4th book has so many things going that I couldn't help but laugh, cry and rage along with the characters. Thus, Nefarious Echoes has won my LAC badge, putting among the best reads of 2021 reading journey. You won't be disappointed with this book.

This is epic! The last one almost left me breathless already and now there were so many new people, separate strands of stories and you may think, what do they have to do with each other? But patience! It'll all come together in the end. Some at the end of the series, I suspect. You still need things to tell all the way to book 6, right? But this is an amazing book. I'm loving the series so far and I am wondering why they don't have it on Netflix yet. It's seriously that good and there are enough characters to make for a great TV series or several blockbuster movies, Lord of the Rings style. Not that she writes anything like Tolkien, this author has very much her own style (and I never finished Tolkien but this is the fourth book in the series I've finished, plus the prequels) and I still want more. I want to know how it continues. I am fascinated with this story, the characters and everything about it and I imagine, the author herself must be a really fascinating person herself to have such a mind that thinks up such an epic fantasy tale! I'm definitely a great fan now!

Another great book by Catrin Russell! This picks up directly where The Resurgence of Light dropped off, and you get to follow what happens between Gus and Nia, and the troubles within the Panther tribe.

I really like how this book explores Anaya and her powers, and she starts to accepts her faith and new "role". Can't say too much without spoiling, but I love the way this is going!

The sex scenes are smoking hot but so beautifully narrated. You don't see them as erotica, they are sensual works of art, and so fitting for the High Fantasy genre!

And wow! What an ending! Such vivid battle scenes I can practically see them play out before my eyes! This book is so entertaining I couldn't put it down!

Oh, this far into the series and it delivered great battle scenes along with betrayals! Along with the newfound alliance, the dissection among their own equals never ending anxiety.
The author has been expounding on many of the supporting characters and giving them very pivotal roles, making them feel even more complete. One of them being Kaedin, the former knight turned priest. He is portrayed as solid with never swaying convictions. His newfound relationship growth promises to be very eye opening!
This author has been expanding and maturing each character as time flows making the tale feel so realistic. There are more mysterious to unravel, including unveiling their ultimate enemy.
All my reviews are always voluntarily written.

It was such a pleasure to dive back in this fantastical world! Similar to the previous books, this one is fast-paced and filled with action and intrigue. But besides creating a compelling plotline, Catrin Russell was also able to bring a nice amount of romance into the story.

While Anaya and Samael struggle to keep their tribe together, the team of mercenaries is getting involved in some dangerous and lethal business. These new characters, introduced at the end of the previous book, now get a bigger role in the overall plot. Though they are a group of thieves and assassins, they are not all bad and I've quickly started to love some of these characters.

Throughout this book, the different storylines come together and somehow it all just keeps getting better. I absolutely loved the complete book but the ending and especially the epilogue to this book were absolutely mind-blowing! The plot thickens and I can't wait to see how it will play out.

Many thanks to the author for gifting me an e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
