This also seems to be the same book as "Out of Time" but either way, it did not sparkle for me. This has a very, very slow build up with most everyone being very dysfunctional. Cady calls herself a prepper yet knows nothing about guns or HAM and has little interest in it. Her parents, especially her mother, prevaricate about her father's health. Her friends have as bad a marriage as her own. She is not able to connect or discipline her teenage daughter.
There were some editing errors (terrorist bombs spotted Madrid; sharp-eyed bombs?). Some questionable sentences ("Unfortunately, even as a prepper, there was no way she had been able to be ready for her husband dying. There just weren’t MREs for that kind of an incident."-Really?). There was also frequent reminders about prior plot ("Her daughter hated her since Cady’s husband, Bailey’s father, Zach had died a few weeks ago." - I actually was able to remember these key parts from chapter to chapter, thanks).
Jackson is a full-on crackpot, but how could he on his own construct and deploy a deadly virus? That does not seem feasible. Cady spent years chatting with him about this type of destruction for fun? She goes to a cousin who is with the FBI to try to warn him about the plot, but not only does the FBI guy not try to get as much info as possible, he says he is not high enough up in the bureau for anyone to listen. That is not how that works. Cady makes no other effort to try to warn law enforcement.
I found that amidst all of this unbelievable plot that there was no character that I cared about. I gave it 2 stars because I managed to make it to the end, but will not continue the series.

I listened to the Audible version of this book, and wow!! I wasn't too sure about the narrator at first, but she quickly grew on me, and I loved it!
Caty (I think I spelled that right...) is a study of contraditions. She muses about how to kill the whole world, while at the same time not wishing death on anyone. To me, this makes her feel more real, more human and flawed, which endeared her to me. Jackson, on the other hand.... well, someone tell him I know how to make tamales and somewhat how to survive, so maybe he'll spare me!
I really enjoyed this book. It's not action filled, as it's the introduction and is actually starting from before the beginning, and I really love that about it. The plot unfolds nicely, while somewhat predictable in certain aspects, but that didn't make it boring or anything of the sort for me.
The ending came a bit more abruptly than I was anticipating, but that's okay!
If you enjoy sci-fi and apocalyptic tales, I recommend this! I know I'll be continuing on with the series!

Gripping, thought provoking, and very realistic
Be careful what you wish for because you might just get it. Cady(the protagonist) just found that out. This wonderfully written and scary story will keep you reading all night long. You will have to because you won’t get any sleep. This is the first book of an end of the world storyline that really brings your worst nightmares and today’s possibilities to life. Flu pandemic discussions have been in the news a lot lately. Ms Paulson shows you what happens.
In her dystopian world style of fiction this story floats to the top. She writes realistic stories that create wonderful discussions. I love this one and will be buying the next book. I encourage you to explore the possibilities of our future.

Cady started planning for the end of the world when she was in college. But, she never intended to follow through on the plans but made sure that she was prepared in case it did happen. Then she starts chatting with Jackson who has the same type plans. Time goes on and her husband is killed in a horrible car accident. Jackson contacts her again via email and warns her that the plan is set in motion and that the end is coming. I don't write spoilers -- but OMG, this is an amazing story!!! So ready to start reading the next book in the series!!!

A new idea that's as intriguing as it is disturbing
I read a ton of post apocalyptic books and I am always delighted when I come across something that's different. This book is a new take on the end of the world scenario and I am enjoying it thoroughly. Can't wait to read the next one!

This isn't your every day apocalypse story. Cady is a prepper, and seems to be stuck in a marriage that neither of them really want. But one night her whole world caved in.
And it only gets worse.
This is a very good start to what sounds like an awesome series. I will be getting the rest of the books.

So-So End Of The World Pandemic Tale
Just what the world needed: another story about its end. Not much new here, but the author manipulates the standard tropes with a fair amount of skill and keeps things moving at rapid pace. Didn't realize it was the first book of a series and have no interest in reading sequels.

This was not a very good book at all
This was not a very well but in book.I wish I had not wasted my time reading it.I had advise you to try a different selection.I wanted to like this because I thought the premise of this story was interesting. The story felt like it was written for a young adult audience of something like that. It was not very challenging at all.

It’s like reading a half of a book since you have to buy the next series to finish it. I’ll just assume she survives and saves the world. Like ordering a two or three piece meal and only getting part of it. Moving on to another book. I don’t mind serial books but how about finishing the whole story before moving on to a sequel.

I'm about 30% into this book and I don't plan on finishing it. Tedious and trite with too much filler and not enough meat. The first big "event" left me rolling my eyes in complete disbelief. Character conflict? Kill 'em! Why bother with having to develop a story around conflict resolution? Not a fan of the writing style or the one-dimensional main characters.

Exceptional read
I've been on a binge of apocalyptic books here lately, and this one has been the best so far. The fear of a virus and how it effects everyone is so real. I can relate to how the main characters are feeling. I feel like I'm actually there and having to make the choices and thus far there are some hard decisions. I can't wait to start the next one.

A prepper faces many hardships and losses as she finds who to trust and who is simply evil
I was up to 4:00 as I couldn't put this one down and just ordered next in series. What a cliffhanger #1 left me on.

So real it's scary
With covid and all the other things going around, this book really puts things into perspective. The story line makes it hard to put down. Highly recommend this book

This is an interesting series, especially considering the times were are living. I just wish that someone had EDITED for grammar, spelling and using the proper names for the characters. It really gets confusing when they call one character by another character's name and you KNOW that particular character is in a different State!! :-(

Cady never expected Jackson, the man she had conversations with in the chat group while she was a college student, to follow through with the plans they had discussed. Just days before she loses her husband in a tragic accident, Jackson contacts her via email to warn her that the end is near.
Wow, this is a believably and scary end of life as we know it scenario, with fascinating and unique characters. Fantastic book!
