This falls short on pictures & illustrations. In some situations the answer is to seek help with no other solutions provided. I guess in these situations, there's really nothing you can do, so I suppose if you are unable to seek help, you die. Really though, my biggest beef is the lack of diagrams. I suspect this is to help keep the book short. It is a small pocket sized book that you can take with you on your adventure. It has a lot of practical advice & tips. I learned a little from this, but found that in most situations, I really needed to read about each topic to have the proper knowledge. What I mean to say is I need a separate book on the topic with full illustrations, etc. for a proper book education (obviously nothing beats experience). This is good in a pinch, as in better than having nothing to reference to at all, but it really isn't suitable for beginners. But if you are not a beginner, then do you need this book at all?

My background: I'm a full time eco farm woman living in Appalachia. I used to live in Colorado & camped out in the mountains more often than I'd like. As a child I hunted for things I shouldn't like snakes & scorpions. Yes, I caught them & brought them home with my brothers, much to my mother's dismay. I am almost entirely off of the grid. I grow, raise & hunt. I've lived without running water, a kitchen & a bathroom. Yet, I really know nothing at all about survival even though I managed to survive through many hardships. Like living in a historic late 1700's log cabin that was so cold inside that the snow didn't melt off of my shoes - seriously. I've been through a lot of character building situations & am happy to say, I've pulled through them all. I'm no pampered princess. But I must stress, this book showed me how little I truly know should the poo hit the fan.

There is a lot of practical stuff in here, but it's really the same stuff that's in every single survival guide. It's good information but it's the same information.

If you were to buy detailed books on the subjects found inside this survival guide, that would be more beneficial. For example, I loved the plant section inside which shows toxic and non-toxic berries. But this book doesn't go into detail on identification. It simply shows a couple of pictures with very little explanation of the plant's features.

Of course, this book is making no attempt to be exhaustive and it might stoke the embers of someone's curiosity into one of its subjects - which is great.

I received a copy of this book directly from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I picked up Wilderness Survival Guide by Jason Marsteiner on pure curiosity. I grew up in the woods, traipsing my family's lake cabin property, which had no road access, no phone, no internet, no TV, no indoor plumbing, and water straight from an underground spring. All of this has led me to a fascination with survival - because when you live off-grid, you need to be prepared for the worst.

I am happy to say that I found this book to be a helpful and fairly complete guide. There was a lot of useful information on a wide range of topics, from how to prepare yourself for the outdoors, to things like identifying the proper wood to start a fighter… what to do if you get lost, and basic first aid.

If I had one nitpick, it is that I wish there were more photo references included for certain sections, but I also understand why perhaps they were cut out - to keep the book more compact for carrying in your pack. This is certainly a book I would recommend for anyone looking into spending time in the outdoors.
