Surprisingly deep world building

The first volume was mostly sweet and fluffy, but this turns quite dramatic. Some cool action scenes, and we learn more about Tina's parents. Oh, and the world is probably doomed. Waiting for volume three.

TINA…

This novel is a good example of the issues that often come up in light novels. IMO, most authors are very bad at explaining action scenes, and it is nearly always a mistake to try to explain anything in detail. It just reveals complete ignorance of reality and exposes logic problems in the worldbuilding.

For example, business and money. Tina and Marcus are concerned that the inn has empty rooms, and it is implied that business is poor. But it also mentions how they have expanded their offerings by a LOT, and actually have many more visitors than previously. Look. If camping costs 1000 and a room is 2000, and most people choose to camp…you still make money and you don’t have to clean their rooms. Plus most people buy a meal at the inn for 800 or dessert for 800…if there are significantly more guests, this should be an INCREASE in money overall.

Somehow when Tina was “bargaining” for an herb, she went from offering less than 2000 to 4000, then to 7000. The other party wasn’t even haggling with her, she just kept raising the price of her own volition. Then she ended up paying 22,000 for a bunch of ingredients to make tonics, but she’s trying to hide the fact that she’s an alchemist…and she seemed to have plenty of money now?

Then there’s the back story of her origins. Ok, you have a group of people I’m going to call spirit people because the obnoxious spelling annoys me. They have stones in their foreheads and they make spirit stones (necessary for magic), which seems to be the only source of these things. The bad human country seems to think that the best plan is to commit genocide and rip the spirit stones from their dead bodies so they can have a bunch at once. But…no one will make more stones after that. Not even planning to enslave them to create more stones, but just straight kill off the source? I also doubt that it is possible to completely wipe out a country’s people in such a short period. You cannot convince me that every single member was present (no one was away from home?), and not a single one could hide or flee.

They keep complaining that monsters are more numerous than ever before. But I would think that is inevitable since apparently they cannot kill a monster or it will make things near it into monsters. All they can do is chase the damn things off. That is not efficient, and eventually the monsters are going to multiply. A zombie showed up, and at first it didn’t seem very intelligent, then suddenly became very crafty, was toying with them, nearly killed them (the horses!! 😭😭). The fight scene was extremely tedious and they were saved at the last minute. As for the kids she saved…are they not going to realize who their parents were? They were that dancer/musician couple that got engaged at the inn, right? I was confused that Rene was insisting on going to find his parents - didn’t Mone say she saw them die?? Did the author forget that?

The thing with the sugula, Stella, etc….It sounds complicated. Only someone from her (mostly extinct) race can safely wield the Stella without getting polluted? What, is it a ring of power? 🙄. Gee, it’s so odd that monsters and bad air have become more common in the last decade… You know, ever since that one race of people was wiped out… It’s almost like they might be related.

I find the writing style to be very amateurish and clumsy. Tina comes off as not very intelligent most of the time, so it’s hard to be interested in her.

This Volume 2, is the continuation of this light novel series, with 200+ pages and just 7 chapters. Marcus, (foster Dad), Tina (main character adopted daughter) and Nakona ( daughter).
This story progresses, in Tina's knowledge of Alchemy, she starts to complete better potions and learns new skills that improve the quality of her alchemy (compressing, drying, etc.)
Tina learns about her "people" and the reason of their "extermination". Author at the end reveals "armageddon" type of conflict.
This world is going to war, and the refugees are crossing the borders looking for food and relief.
Tina and Marcus have no vision, no ambition, so the Inn really doesn't get better, they do not make rooms near the Hot-Baths, and an adventurer team of Beast-Folk, in exchange for discounts tries to start the renovation of the Inn. But Tina and Marcus produce little amounts of food, do not really grow the size of the Inn, the Potion store, etc. If Marcus and Tina would increase their sales, they could hire refugees, feed more refugees and actually start to help the needy people "more".
The pace of this light novel series is really slow. The action is small, maybe two action scenes in this whole volume 2.
Although Tina only focuses on her Alchemy, she has no desire to improve her "Magic". Because they do not hire security, maids or agricultural servants then their situation does not improve.
Tina is able to "cure" Lico's injuries and deformations (because of Alchemic accident). When Tina makes a better level of potion she can probably return Marcus' right hand. If Tina would have given the advanced potion to Marcus, he could have defended them better, but the author refuses to save the "granpa" (and kills him off in the story), refuses to cure Marcus (so that he remains weak).
Author seems to enjoy the company of weak main characters. Only Tina practices her Alchemy but has no offensive or defensive spells knowledge.
They insist on staying at an Inn that does not make them any money. Author insists on the "Statu Quo" (let the things remain as they are). I hope the pace and the attitude of the main characters improve. If not the next monster that attacks them is just going to finish them off, or the author, is going to find another way to finish off his weak, unimaginative, and underachievers.
Author still changes narrator all of a sudden and without any warning. It is still confusing to change the point of view (between the characters) from one moment to the other.

The story continues with Tina slowly getting older - 2 years per chapter - while things go worse on the world at an equally slow pace. The over-arching plot is intriguing, giving a bit of an eldritch horror feel. It clashes with Tina's cute slice-of-life moments though and I am not a big fan over mixing genres. Add the fact that I am not a fan of describing the MCs panic in excruciating detail, Tina being oddly naïve, the dense person-romance trope (luckily not the MC) and a few moments were people appear to act stupid/blind for plot purposes and it leaves me with mixed feelings. Most of those things are personal pet peeves though. In the end, I did enjoy it for the most part, and I am going to read the sequel.

Note: I quit a short way into book 2 so I am giving the same review for both books.

This book has a focus problem. The MC is a magical genius brewing potions at 4 that adult alchemists would find difficult. The author keeps coming back to this fact over and over again and then just ignores it to write another slice of life piece about how the MC ends up raising bees or trying new recipes in the kitchen. "Slice of life" books need to focus on the MC's life. If you treat your MC like an up and coming hero of legend then spend 50 pages on runing an inn all you have is a painfully slow and boring book.

So, bottom line, not sure who is reviewing this book such that it currently has a 4.14 on Goodreads.com but it certainly isn't people like me.

DNF. i stopped reading at like 80% because it was just so boring and i was having real trouble trying to finish this book before i remembered that i didnt have to read it of i wasn't liking it. i can see that the story could possibly get more intresting further along but in this not much happens and the MC isn't anywhere intresting enough to carry a story like that, i personally felt like she doesn't have much of a personality apart from being obsessed with repaying people, she seems to like alchemy one minute and then the next say she's doesn't really care about being an alchemist she just wants to give her dad his arm back so that attitudes confusing. i really wanted to like this because the premise sounds so intestine but sadly i didnt. :(

Better than the first book!

Smarter dialogue, more action, and a more interesting storyline. Even the episodes from the dad’s POV were improved. Instead of retelling events, they moved the story along. The best improvement was that the main character, Tina, had more personality, and she took more of an active role in the decisions that moved the story forward. To be fair, she was only six years old in the previous volume, yet she had an adult mind. Her role was too passive for the most part. I didn’t notice the same issues with this volume.

Also, the author continued with an original afterword for her English audience. The publisher should be commended for this practice.

What the actual f**k is wrong with these characters???? Seriously? Is the MC stupid, brain dead or something? Who the f*** make an alchemical recipe in front of so many people when you are specifically told to be careful and not show your talents to people. I swear this series is testing my patience. I wish I had a physical copy just so I can burn it. I was stupid enough to pick the second volume even though I hated the first. It's what I deserve for hoping that a book about a child would turn out to be a good one😑

Entertaining

Definitely another entertaining story and an enjoyable addition to the series overall, though the mythology that pops up near the end is slightly confusing at times, and may be a bit suspicious. Though that could just be my cynicism coming through lol.

I had fun with this one. It's basically more of what you get with the first book, but with a lead in to a more over-arching series plot.

A 3.5 because, while I really like the worldbuilding (honestly I think the best part of the series), the pacing still feels a bit too all over the place for me in some instances.

It has some good bits, but the longer I read the more it's like an aggressively bland anime.
