Self-Confidence: 10 Lessons for Life in the Age of Anxiety

Rate this book
An essential read for anyone who has encountered a crisis of confidence. Where does self-confidence come from? How does it work? Why are some people more confident than others? On the surface, these seem like simple questions – but answers can feel hard to come by when we need them most. In this bestselling book, Charles Pépin brings to light the strange alchemy that is self-confidence. Pépin examines the role confidence plays in the lives of our most respected public figures including the likes of Madonna, Mozart, Frieda Kahlo, Martin Luther King and Serena Williams, and argues that above all, to live a life of confidence is to live a life of action. Drawing on the collective wisdom of philosophers, psychologists and the lives of people we encounter on a daily basis, Pépin invites us to probe the mystery and mastery of self-confidence.

“Having confidence in ourselves requires us to keep the heart that we had as children - a child’s soul in the mind of an adult.”

“Modern life makes us responsible for our own fate. Its our job to get our projects going, to prove our worth, and to build our happiness - our job to invent our own lives, this requires self confidence.”

“While self-esteem is based on our assessment of our own value, self-confidence is tied to our capacity for action, our ability to venture forth despite our doubts, to take risks in a complex world.”

“Others can give us self-confidence, without making a big speech or offering words of encouragement, just by trusting us with a mission. Little by little, a mentors confidence in us becomes our own.”

First instill confidence (teach) then show confidence (trust).

“Among great artists, confidence comes first and foremost from constant, devoted, almost obsessional practice.”

“If we try too hard to figure out what the artist meant (in a piece of art), we lose the opportunity to discover what his work makes us feel. At times we react to a work of art in exactly the way that we react to a natural landscape, without asking ourselves about the information behind it.”

“The more we consent to the possibility of error, the more we experience ourselves as free beings, capable of acting decisively. Uncertainty is the salt of life.”

“We can have no real self-confidence unless we are faithful to ourselves, unless we have internal coherence and the deep joy that accompanies it. Faithfulness to our desire is the antidote to the corrosive poison of comparison.”

“To have confidence in oneself is not to be sure of oneself. It’s to have the courage to confront uncertainty rather than avoid it.”
