Once upon a time, demons invaded the world, wiping out all prehistoric creatures that once ruled the earth. After dominating all life, they ruled the world for many long years until the great ice age froze them in burials of ice deep down in the underworld. After the demons were lost to history, a new race called humans were born, and they became the new rulers of the world. Left undisturbed for thousands of years, the humans were ignorant of the threat of demons lurking just under their feet. In the modern age of technology, industrialization and political turmoil, the demons begin to rise once more, merging with corrupt humans to pollute the world with violence so they may rule once more.

Mankind’s only hope for salvation is to use the demons’ power against them, and only a pure-hearted man like Akira Fudo can do so without losing his humanity. Once, he was little more than a timid crybaby, but Akira now wields the terrible power of a devil, yet holds the innocent soul of a man; he is a Devilman. Akira gets dragged into a dark world of conspiracy, betrayal and bloodshed by his best friend Ryo. Ryo's father was a genius researcher of the occult who left many records and findings informing them of the oncoming demon invasion before he was possessed and took his own life. Now the two friends are the only ones with the power and the knowledge to save the world or lead it to its destruction.

Devilman has quite the legacy. It's very rough around the edges and it definitely shows its age with some stale dialogue, major pacing issues, one dimensional characters who react unrealistically, etc, but all of these things are to be expected since it was written in 1972 around the time when the medium was just beginning to find solid ground and can be considered the grandfather of all modern horror, dark fantasy and mature adult manga in general. It heavily inspired countess classic masterpieces and memorable modern tales such as Berserk, Attack on Titan, Gantz, Neon Genesis Evangalion, Parasyte, Death Note, Tokyo Ghoul, as well as the works of Junji Ito, Naoki Urasawa and Satoshi Kon. Hell, even many non-horror series have drawn inspiration from it such as Yu Yu Hakusho, Inuyasha and Dragon Ball. You could say that Devilman is to manga what Lovecraft is to modern horror.

Though it does struggle to move itself forward at times, the lore behind the demons, the origin of the main character merging with a powerful entity which is used in many modern series and the emotional climactic ending are all fascinating to see. The author also utilizes a lot of real-world literature to set the foundation of the plot and backstory. In the world of Devilman, the events of Dante's Divine Comedy and the Christian Bible are things that actually happened, it also brings in a lot of historical references and events such as the Salem Witch Trials, Black Sabbaths, WWII, race feuds, slavery and colonization. It's one of the first series that created the 'humans can be more cruel, terrifying and monstrous than actual demons, monsters and wild animals' plots that we've seen done thousands of times.

It's definitely a tad corny and poorly written in some places, but it's great to see where many modern storytelling tropes originated from and how it inspired so many of my all-time favorite series. The Netflix adaption Devilman Crybaby is also a very cool modernized retelling of the original story and I honestly prefer it over the manga a bit.

This volume took all of the things I hated about the first volume and made them worse. There is more clunky, forced dialog and exposition, and now we get plot changes that don't make sense and new characters just hop into the story that the main characters is supposed to have known for years just so he has a reason to go and save them when they get into trouble 2 pages later.

Bello l'ultimo episodio totalmente contemporaneo.

Pessimo.

I kind of like the feel that the series is taking now that it has a global impact instead of conflicts between Akira and other demons. Demons hiding within the human populations and the suicidal mergences of humans and demons is very interesting. My only criticisms of this volume was Ryo's dialogue, the long fight between the turtle demon and Akira, and the small arc with the mother demon.

Rating Update 3/12/2019 - 4 to 3 stars. My criticisms made up the majority of the volume, and should have cumulatively lowered the rating.

Update
With the adoption of my new rating system, a three star rating is befitting. The original review and rating update conform to the new rating system. After having looked at every page in this volume, a three star rating seems appropriate. My biggest praise in the original review was the global impact of the demons, which takes up the final twenty-five pages of the volume, leading me to believe that the original four star rating and subsequent three star rating were based on this euphoria that I remembered best because it was at the end of the volume. I will not allow this to continue even though the four star-rated twenty-five pages could not have reached their peak without the smaller stories of the demons in the society, but I have criticisms about the sections leading up to the four star-rated ending. A three star rating is a balance between a four star-rated ending and the two and three star-rated content leading up to it.

Rating Update
After having skimmed through the volume, the accurate rating to this volume would be 2.5 stars. The final fifty pages contain the demons emergence on Earth, which I infer to be a four star-rating point mentioned in the original section of the review since I had originally rated the volume at four stars and believe that decision to have been done because of the four star-ending brought on the belief that the rest of the volume was four stars when it did not reach the same heights.

The 2.5 star rating is more accurate because I could not find any positives mentioned in this review besides the global impact of the demons. Supposing that the final fifty pages receives four stars and the rest of the volume receives two stars, the cumulative rating is 2.45 stars which is closer to 2.5 stars since I believe there were some three star-rated sections not mentioned in previous sections of this review, such as Akira breaking the fourth wall to declare that things will get worse, sections of Akira and the young female friend who becomes part of the shell, and parts of the dialogue in the volume.

March 1, 2020
Update
I have decided to keep the rating at 2.5 stars that rounds up to 3 stars. I have questioned the 2.45 star-rating mentioned in the previous update that assumes the final 50 pages reaching a four star-rating and the rest to be two star-rated. I am fine with the distribution of ratings but I must also remember buildup was required to reach those 50 pages, in that the volume could not just beginning the destruction in those final pages occurring right after the Silen battle at the end of the second volume. The beginning section of this review keeps a pace that builds up to the final 50 pages.

I no longer consider the following text, from the previous update, as my original reaction after having finished the volume: "I believe there were some three star-rated sections not mentioned in previous sections of this review, such as Akira breaking the fourth wall to declare that things will get worse, sections of Akira and the young female friend who becomes part of the shell, and parts of the dialogue in the volume".

March 15, 2020
Update
From reading the previous updates and the original review, I have created the 2.5EZ rating type as the rating type for this book: "The opposite of the 2.5E rating type. The book was mediocre (two star-rated) until the concluding quarter that is four star-rated. The four star-rated content does require some of the two star-rated content as buildup. There is also some criticisms in the two star-rated content sprinkled about which does reach one star-ratings of dislike at times. This book barely reaches a 2.5 star-rating and is a very weak three star-rated book".

Why this volume has only two stars:

- we are thrown into time travel without a warning (what? why? how? Nothing explained they just jump through time)
- If you want to put history in your work at least check your sources, ffs.
The Nike of Samotracia was found in Samotracia (but probably sculpted in Rodi) but most certainly the Nike (which means victory in Ancient Greek) wasn’t the only and main Goddess of Samotracia. The statue was never meant to be put on a boat as a figurehead (figureheads were in wood) but in a temple. And ffs what the f is that thing that “from that moment on every statue of Nike was depicted without head and arms” omg are you serious?
- the Marie Antoinette chapter was rushed
- and I’m not even going to start about the one about Hitler

The only reason I didn’t have one star is because of the last chapter with the spider-demon and the gang, that at least saved it a bit.

I understand the general intent (demon trying to change history and destroy humanity behind the scenes) but all in all I think it could have been done better than this.
