3.5 because I really don’t like the whole “misunderstanding” troupe. Y’all are adults for goodness sake, a reporter and a cop, use.your.words!!

While this wasn’t my favorite in the series because of the lack of communication between Hope and Alex (my least favorite romance trope), it did have some wonderful moments and an intriguing mystery to follow. Still a great addition to the series and I am absolutely addicted to Hope, her investigation style, and the whole of Hopeless!

Another winner in the Hope Walker series. I absolutely love this well written, clever series. Daniel Carson has nailed the dialogue with the lovable characters in this book and it's easy to get lost in their world. I was immersed in the plot, laughed out loud and enjoyed every minute I spent reading A Hopeless Valentine. I can't wait for more in the series. Oh, and one more thing.....Dominic, am I right?

I just love this series and with every new installment, I love it even more. I don't know how he does it but Daniel never disappoints. Humor, mystery, real to life characters, surprises - all elements needed for a fun read. Highly recommend!

This has been my favorite cozy in 2024 as well as 2023 when I started cozies!
This was the first book of the Hope Walker series I’ve read and the first by this author. I will definitely be reading the others in this series and looking for anything else this author puts out.

First the audiobook narration. This deserves high praise and is a driving force for this being a 5 star as this was one of the best narrators I’ve listened to. I knew the synopsis praised her highly and after listening, I can say that praise is well deserved. She brought the characters to life truly. None of the voices or portrayals were over the top or ridiculous like you see in the majority of cozies. Each one was clearly defined and unique. I never questioned who was speaking, their emotions at the time or felt annoyed with how they were portrayed. Her narration made a very well written, interesting story even better and held your attention fully. I will definitely listen to anything I can find of hers. This one is a must listen.

Now, the nitty gritty:

While it is book 7, I did not feel like I was missing any background to not know what was going on or who the characters were. There are a few references to previous events, but most were easily explained within 1-2 sentences so nothing confusing. Even the ending explained what I imagine was the reason she was away for so long. I felt this could be a stand alone easily, yet it made me want to go back and start from the beginning. Even if I’d have to suffer through a romance that everyone says seems to drag out. I am not a romance person and I’m new to cozies, but this story had a touch of romance that was made fun, enjoyable, and hilarious albeit frustrating at times. I did find myself agreeing with granny that Hope needed to grow a pair and quit whining. It dragged on a little bit in the fact that it was painfully awkward and I thought omg enough already, you’re adults. Move on so you can move on with the investigation, but it was still a very funny and well done portion of the story. It helped make the story move along and be enjoyable without being overly sappy, zero sex steam so very clean, and it wasn’t the typical cliché romance garbage. The only part I didn’t like was the fact that Alex seemed to like to flirt and the attention from other women, especially Dr. Wonder Bra. I actually can’t think of her real name, just Dr. Wonder Bra because it was hilarious and helped you visualize this character so well. Most of the time I thought nah, I’m with granny’s initial assessment and Hope’s ongoing one that if he really liked her and didn’t like other women falling all over him, he’d just make it known and ask the woman out. I also thought Hope should say peace out and move on. I know this part was supposed to show the shyness and awkwardness of the man and the ongoing romance struggle between the two, but it was a little too much. If a man is interested in one woman and doesn’t like all the unwanted attention, he says so. While this part was verging on removing a star, the characters, writing, narration, and mystery were enough to keep it at a 5.

The mystery was interesting, or rather all of them. There’s a lot going on in this story but it all tied together very well and was very well written. It didn’t feel chaotic, choppy, overdone, or like plot confusion. The author did an excellent job with making sure all of the events going on were related, well developed, explained and detailed very well, and interesting. It was not overwhelming like most stories are when the author tries to throw in too many events, characters, issues, mysteries, etc. It was not easily guess as there were so many plausible suspects all with various, large motives. It was also executed well in the fact that eveything that happens makes sense, it’s believable, it’s not over the top, it’s not an annoying female MC that oversteps her bounds or makes stupid decisions or hasty, confusing conclusions then magically solves the crime. It also didn’t give the typical trope of an inept police officer. This part was extremely enjoyable. It gets boring, annoying and headache worthy to always get the same “the MC is smarter than everyone, the only one who can solve the crime, and does so seemingly without any really investigation or explanation while the police are bumpkins who stand around scratching their heads or are overly lazy and inept” storyline. This is why I’ve never been a fan of cozies, but this author goes against the grain here and really wrote characters who compliment each other and a setting/investigation that makes sense and is realistic.

The characters are outstanding. This had a lot of characters, but I didn’t feel overwhelmed or like I couldn’t keep track of who was who. There was zero confusion in who everyone was and their relationships/personalities as they were extremely well developed and realistic. These felt like everyday people in a small town, not cliché tropes. The narrators performance of each also helped distinguish them. I cared about and liked all of them, even the “villains” or the ones you’re supposed to love to hate. Those were some of the most well done as you really can’t stand these people and absolutely want to punch them in the face or hope they trip over something. I’d love to see Gemima get punched again. She is a troll, first class. Other than the feel that the sheriff likes the flirting and Hope is a little bit whiny, these two characters were very enjoyable. Their dialogue was perfectly matched, sweet and comical, and they worked well together on multiple levels. Again, neither was overbearing, over the top ridiculous or stupid, or annoying. Both had great development with backgrounds, personalities, kindness, and their snarky banter was still sweet and endearing, not rude sarcastic or too mushy. Many scenes had me laughing out loud. While I may not have been rooting for the romance by the end, it wasn’t a disappointment along the way. Katie is probably my favorite character. She actually reminded me so much of my best friend from childhood that I texted her the same and told her to read this. Her wit and charm both hilarious and heartwarming. Her one liners superb and personality the best. I would love to see more of her in the future and see her more involved in the investigations. By far my favorite. Her son was also pretty hilarious and was definitely a heartstring tugger while being the typical 5 almost 6 y/o parrot, naughty, mischievous little boy. Granny was also hilarious. Her advice seemed conflicting at times but she was ultimately a great character with lot of comical extras. Turd Waffle is now my favorite insult. Her insults and names are priceless. Without giving anything away, the beer bottle on the floor scene was the best. I really enjoyed Dr. Patel as well and hope to see her more during girls nights at Taco House. I felt for her the most and she seemed to have the most emotional depth. I feel like she needs friends like Hope and Katie and could really benefit from having friends who care about her and give her a purpose other than work. Dr. Wonder Bra (I would’ve punched her) and Dr. Van de Berg are the perfect love to hate characters and boy do you love to hate them! All in all the dialogue and personalities of each character were superbly done. It all fit together so cohesively it felt like real people conversing rather than disjointed made up conversations. Each were well developed, interesting, and made you have emotional connections one way or the other. I hadn’t really paid attention to the author when I started it as I had saved it to be read a long time before I actually got to it and I was caught off guard at the end when the closing said the author’s name. I couldn’t believe this was written by a man because the female characters were so well done. So many past reads where a male author has tried to write female MCs or female dialogue, thoughts or actions have been utter disasters and very misogynistic or just truly fallen flat. This is the first time I’ve come across a male cozy author and I absolutely loved it. This author is very talented in writing style and very creative in scene, plot and character building.

This story had a great mystery while being extremely funny and sweet. There were many, many times I laughed out loud and it had me rolling. Between the writing and the narration this was such a lighthearted, fun, laugh filled story with a captivating mystery, little bit of clean romance while still pulling off some really serious, heartfelt scenes. I’d love to see more crime solving participation from the condiment club. The ending had a couple good cozy twists and sparked some smiles and more laughs. Some good HEAs and redemptions. Only one was part was a meh, not good because someone gets away with something they shouldn’t regardless of why they did it or actions they take in the end.

Overall this is an extremely well done book with extremely well done narration. Highly recommend for a quick holiday read, reset read, or just a curl up on a rainy day and enjoy a good story read. I hope the others on this series are as enjoyable and have high hopes for them. Author, narrator, and series will be names/titles I follow and keep track of for new releases.

Hope has just returned to Hopeless from Appleton and admittedly she's going to miss the new friends she made. However, she's a week behind on what's happening in Hopeless since her phone died and she couldn't get the scoop from her best friend Katie.

We get a flashback of Hope and Gemima in first grade, a memory that sets the tone of their relationship forever. Now Hope has to stand by and watch as Gemima becomes Mayor of Hopeless. As Gemima gives her speech, we get to see a fun interaction with Hope, Katie, and Katie's kids Dominic and Lucy. Followed by a clever exchange with Granny as to how Gemima was able to become mayor. When Alex joins them, he's about to ask Hope out for Valentine's Day when Gemima goes off on another subject.

The Hopeless Heart Dance on Valentine's Day from which all proceeds go to the Hopeless Regional Medical Center and Dr. Liza Van de Berg's research. Gemima has a great idea for the fund raiser, unfortunately she didn't ask first, and someone gets put on the spot with no way out. Apparently, they are going to auction off the night with Sheriff Alex Kramer.

Dr. Van de Berg calls for Alex the next day to handle a case of missing drugs, discreetly. He brings Hope along as a shield from the woman he suspects is going to bid on him in the auction. After settling a parking space dispute between a maintenance man Otto Shriver and a Dr. Stephen Lewis, Hope and Alex meet with Dr. Van de Berg. getting all the facts of the case, and noting the hospital has no video surveillance cameras, he makes the arrest away from the hospital.

It seems drama with the hospital isn't going away soon as in the pre-dawn hours Alex shows up at the Library where Hope lives, with coffee and a case. A doctor has been murdered in a lab. Hope is helping with the investigation when Milton Dupree, the auditor, joins Alex at the crime scene. Now he needs Hope to back off. He really wants his budget increased to include a deputy.

Alex is once again clueless about what he's said to upset Hope and he's also clueless of women openly flirting with him.

Granny's bad back becomes an interesting and funny
situation caused by Katie's kids. Just one of a few funny things caused by those kids.

There are plenty of suspects with motive and as always Hope gets help from the Buck's Diner Murder Investigation Club. Those folks are a hoot.

Hope never backs down from dangerous situations and this book is no different. Hopefully Alex will soon figure things out both professionally and personally.

I can't wait to read the next book in this series!

Since I like romance in a book almost as much as a good whodunnit, I am no longer frustrated about the Sheriff and Hope. Thank goodness he did what he did at the dance! Of course, it is fairly frustrating that Hope just assumes Alex should ask her out and since he hasn’t he must not like her “that way”. She’s a sleuth so how in the heck does she not get the not so subtle hints Alex sends her about liking her?! She does need to “grow a pair”! Well, finally they’re past that and they danced. That was a great mystery at the hospital, too! I was really crossing my fingers for the guilty party to be Katrina or Liz.

Oh! I noticed in the previous book and this one that Juan’s niece is named Angela. If my memory serves me correctly wasn’t her name April before?

Next book is A Hopeless Queen, book 8

Great build

I Ikeda the return to the town I have come to love. The characters are great and the condiment sessions are classic...though I'd like to see that crew be a little more instrumental in the actual solving of the crime rather than just picking names and condiments. Also Granny gave very conflicting advice about Alex. The first conversation suggested he want all that in to Hope, which seemed pretty out of character. The second made more sense in that Alex had asked her out and it was important that she reciprocate. Thst inconsistency was a bit off putting but ultimately nor detracting from the plot itself. Also the fact that this author is teaching during a pandemic and still writing is beyond amazing. Mad props.

Solidly enjoyable as the rest of the series and the balance of the comic soap opera drama stuff and the mystery is now almost perfect. The actual mystery is nicely done, and whilst there is a little more "women hating women" stuff here than feels great, Carson has on the whole seeded some of those historic rivalries through the series and hits some them even further home here. That said the romance now is dragging out and there are romcom levels of eye-rolling annoyance about why Hope and the Sheriff aren't getting together, which is obviously par for the course in an ongoing series but still a little grating.

Attention Janet Evanovich and Jana DeLeon fans

I recently read a book that was touted to be a close relative to the Stephanie Plum and Fortune Redding series. It was a very weak substitute. This series of books is not a weak substitute. While I am prejudiced against anything that is NOT Janet and Jana's work, I must say that Daniel's Hope Walker is very good. Dare I say it? (I dare. I dare.) It comes in a very close second. Hope is more Stephanie than Fortune. Bess and Granny are more Ida Belle and Gertie than Grandma Mazur. Alex is a lot like Joe and Carter. And I detest Gemima almost as much as I do Celia. All in all, an enjoyable read to lift your spirits.

These Hopeless books are the definitive cozy without being sappy mysteries. Good humor, great characters and good plots. They are perfect for a quick weekend escape. They stand alone, but are greatly enhanced by the having the history of the previous books. I was disappointed in #6, which was the "first episode of the second season", but this one returns to the excellence of the first five. This is one of the indie authors who I always check to see if a new one is out. Start at #1 and join the fun.

Brilliant!

This author is truly talented. He’s a genius with the written word and if you haven’t read any of his books, you’re missing out. Hope, Katie, Granny and even little Dominic are back and better than ever! It’s hilarious, heart warming and definitely an excellent mystery ! But I will say that I’ve never read about two more awkward adults who like each other than Hope and Alex!

Great mystery read for a night.
I just found this series and have read all seven during the holidays. Loved them all. I was really sorry I had to wait for number 8. Your stories bring the reader right into the action. Love the characters especially little six/30 year old. He is a riot. Thanks for this adventure. I am looking forward to the next book. Wish it were sooner.

Romance, Mystery, and Humor - What's not to love?

This was my first read in the "Hopeless" series. But I caught on to characters easily yet am looking forward to reading the first six, too. Enough action to keep me wanting to turn the pages, and enough sweet romance to root for true love to overcome the bumps in Hope's journey. Can't wait for #8. In the meantime, excuse me so I can start at the beginning of Hope's story!
