This is a great book for PreK-2nd to read. Its about a shark who is really friendly and tries to make friends with the other sea life. Everyone is scared of the shark and runs from him. When a fisherman captures some of the fish in the ocean, Smiley Shark comes to the rescue and scares off the fisherman. The fish become free and become Smiley Shark's friends! This would be a great book to teach children about not judging others and to look from the inside instead of the out. The illustration in this book is also awesome!

اینقدر نقاشی های کتاب چشم نواز و رنگارنگ و شادن که صرف دیدن تصاویر کتاب هم ادم رو به وجد میاره و عاشق کتاب میشه
داستان کتاب هم در مورد کوسه ای هست که به همه لبخند میزنه ولی همه ازش فرار میکنن. اما در پایان با همین لبخندش بقیه رو نجات میده و باهاشون دوست میشه.

Bright, vivid, amazing illustrations in a pretty predictable, but cute story line that the preschool crowd will love. Smiley Shark just wants to be a friend and play with the other fish. However, the other fish are understandably scared of him. Eventually, things work out and kids can learn that looks can be deceiving. A fun group read aloud.

This adorable story about Smiley Shark is a great read on diversity and being different to read to preschoolers, kindergarteners and 1st graders. It teaches that others are different, and just because they are different doesn't mean that they are mean or weird! This teaches readers a great lesson.

A fun story of a misunderstood friend who saves the day...

Smiley Shark just wants to find some friends to play with, but every time he approaches a sea creature, the creature swims off as quickly as possible. One day, all the creatures are caught in the fisherma's net. Smiley thinks quickly and does what he does best: smile at the fisherman who drops his net in the water to escape the shark.

While not a fresh concept (misunderstood individual who uses his/her differences to the betterment of all), this one is refreshingly set in the middle of the ocean, where many colorful fish and ocean life are found. A fun find for summertime!

What a terrific picture book for ages toddler-2nd grade! The under-the-sea illustrations are big, bold and easily recognizable to young children and while the messages of not judging by appearances and how to be a friend are clear, the story is just plan fun. If that isn’t enough to warrant purchases for your child(ren) or library patrons, the rhythm, rhyme and elements of figurative language such as alliteration and onomatopoeia should be. Perfect book to pair with Pfister’s Rainbow Fish for terrific compare/contrast with theme, setting and character.

A shark who wants fish to be friends, not food, is a good joke from Finding Nemo, a big budget movie that came out in the same year this sloppily illustrated, generally unfunny book came out. This book has that same joke as its whole premise, but somehow doesn't address the fact that sharks kind of do eat fish, so maybe it's not unwise of the fish to be wary of the Smiley Shark.
Leads your small children to emotional identification with the shark, which is perhaps confusing for all parties.

This one is a little confusing to rate. I liked the story and liked that it was about peacefully overcoming prejudice. However, the 1st graders seemed unimpressed with how the rescue was handled. I think they were expecting a little more action and excitement. I feel like it has a good message, but it spends too long focusing on the sad part of the shark being rejected rather than on the exciting part of him proving them wrong.

I may not be the target audience here.
Smiley Shark struggles with nonverbal communication because he's mimicking behaviours without fully understanding the context. This means he is frequently misunderstood and has a hard time making connections. That is, until the sea creatures unite against the ultimate enemy: Mankind.

So, y'know, it's quite relatable.

Read for Preschool Storytime 8/9/2017 - there are lots of words with beginning S sounds in this book, so I cut out S's with our die cutter and had the kids wave their S's in the air when they heard words that began with S.
