This was just a super fun manga series that tells a full satisfying story in 23 volumes.
I first got into the series through the Anime adaption. It's one of the best adaptations of manga I've ever seen, super faithful to the source material and adds a ton of colourful elements to it. That's probably the main thing missing from the manga, although I love B+W art, the colour of the special attacks is super amazing in the show. I'm excited to see the remaining episodes adapted to anime because they are wonderful in the manga!
If you've missed the hype surrounding this series (one of the highest revenue properties on the planet over the past couple years), let me fill you in a bit.
The setup is pretty interesting. In this world there are demons who can walk around at night and feed on humans, a bit like how Vampires work in fiction but they have more variation in their design. Our main protagonist is the young Tanjiro who's taken in as a demon slayer after his family is murdered by a demon and his sister is infected. He hides his demon sister and tries to train her to be good, which is unheard of.
These demon attacks are rare enough that the general population doesn't really think they exist and the government doesn't seem to do anything about it. There's a group created by Kagaya Ubuyashiki called The Demon Slayer Corps. The demons also have a leader Muzan Kibutsuji who operates as the main antagonist of the series.
The series takes this premise and executes on it perfectly.
I couldn't wait for the show to finish and read this through... I cried in the final book because of how incredible the whole series was done. Start to finish it was beautifully drawn, fully developed and satisfying for every character. Nothing was by accident. It was full of joy, suffering, mercy, redemption, humor, and integrity. Tanjiro will likely be my favorite protagonist of all time.
I devoured the whole set in 2 days!! I am so overwhelmed with emotions!!!! Everytime i say i will stop crying and then something happen and the tears just fall 😭😭😭. I really don’t know what to say! What an amazing journey it was! I feel so empty now that I finished it 😢😢😢. It was really a masterpiece!!!!!!
I feel it should be noted that this is 23 books but I didn’t want to write 23 reviews lol. Amazing story, will be reading again, and that $300+ box set better watch out bc I am coming for it as soon as I witness a price drop
I technically read everything online, so instead of spamming my Goodreads with 21 Volumes, I thought marking this one as Read is cleaner, lol.
Anyway. Hella Satisfying! I loved everything about it. Is it the most complex, mind-blowing story I've ever read? No. But does it have a good start, middle and conclusion? Yes. The characters are not the deepest, but enjoyable to read. Basically what im saying, If you are looking for a story with a good premise, that get you rooting for the characters and that get you invested and leaves you satisfied, then this is for you. Including a few Tear jacking moments. I normally never cry when I read, but oh well....
Good stuff. Took away one point bc of the sequel reincarnation thing at the end. It's useless and not good. But doesn't affect the main story, so it is what it is.
(Counting the entire series as one book bc... it's a graphic novel series ol)
You know how there are some things that you think are incredibly overhyped so you avoid it like the plague and then once you finally cave in and read it you understand completely the hype over it? Yeah, that's Demon Slayer. Honestly, this may have been one of the best series I have read in a long while. Very reminiscent of the mangas that I read back when I was a teenager, I couldn't stop reading it. (Also as a middle school teacher, being a fan of Demon Slayer has definitely given me a ton of cred with them, so a plus on top of an enjoyable reading experience!)
Wow... I didn't think there could be series that rivalled the feelings that Sui Ishida's 'Tokyo Ghoul' inspired within me, but I was wrong.
This series is beautiful and makes you feel that no matter how hopeless you believe yourself to be, you are loved by your friends, and are priceless to them.
I was struggling with giving this book a 3 or a 4 because there were aspects I reeeeally liked about it, but finally decided for a 3 (3.5 if it were possible) since the aspects I disliked outweight the good stuff, and some of the greatest aspects became negative at some point in the story.
Starting as always from the negative I would remark the main aspect of the story: the empathy for everyone that is embodied by Tanjiro. Although I initially appreciated this angle it got old really quick. Every fight (and I must make clear that fights are never my favorite part of any manga) seemed to follow the same structure, with Tanjiro shedding tears while we got a glance of the demon's backstory. It was nice when well done, but it was so repetitive than by the end I didn't even cared if it was well done anymore, I just wanted the fight to be over. Also I'm of the opinion that too much of a good thing is always bad, so I found myself disagreeing with Tanjiro's unhinged empathy for literally everyone who crossed his path.
The story felt rushed at parts and I felt some things that were set up were then closed too quickly or never addressed again at all, we got some character introductions/backstory in a dumpy way, all in one sweep, and I didn't get the time to like them because they felt like intruders in the story. And then some just died as quickly as they came. I understand that not every manga has to be One Piece and have an epic story spawning years and thousands of chapters, but maybe reducing the scope can help close a story in a more satisfactory way. I feel the author's scope and time expectations were a mismatch.
Things I liked: the main characters (although not their "power ups", looking at you Zenitsu and Nezuko), they were well developed and it's easy to get fond of them, some emotional scenes were very well delivered which was refreshing to see in a shonen manga, where normally you get the feely feels exclusively when they serve to advance the plot or for character development (with exceptions of course). I appreciated the epilogue a lot, the ending got messy, but then the epilogue rescued what the story was about for me and gave a sense of closure and well deserved peace they all needed. I also loved the art style, specially for the eyes and the techniques!
i started reading this so i could understand what the hell my twitter timeline was talking about and also i told someone three years ago i'd pick it up, and it was really good! it demands you keep on reading and the action and fight scenes are good and well-drawn (though, on a couple of occasions perhaps too short?) and i feel SUCH strong affection for so many of the characters.
the story's premise is interesting and the overall story is extremely good. i really liked all of the characters and i appreciated tanjiro's entire disposition, like! i love a dumb of ass, pure of heart protag! that's the backbone of shonen!!! i took awhile to warm up to zenitsu because while i usually really enjoy a cowardly character, i do not always love the perv in a series—i am historically more amenable if the character has depth to them (see: sanji, jiraiya) and it took me a little longer than usual to find that in him, but i liked him a lot more in the end than i would've predicted during his introduction, and i did appreciate that all the characters in-universe thought he needed to cut that shit out.
still, i do think this could've benefited from another 100-200 chapters because there were multiple times where i felt that arcs just moved too fast or i wish we'd spent more time with certain characters. still, despite all of the things i could nitpick about how i personally felt about the pacing by the end i had either teared up or cried multiple times soooooo shonen remains undefeated from laying me out emotionally, i guess.
also, i really loved the little faces that gotuge drew when the characters were being silly it is SO endearing.
This was the first manga I read (at least, since like, middle school & I couldn’t tell you what it was!) & it was truly amazing. I loved every single bit of it.
I gasped, I cried, I cussed, I flinched, I winced, I laughed, I smiled & I cheered.
10/10, 5 stars, whatever you want to say — it’s a must read!
