His one chance at happiness ended ten years ago.

Heath doesn’t want to be back on his old clan grounds. The ghost of his dead wife haunts him enough when he’s away from this place. Here, where Heath’s old clan leader killed her, the past doesn’t confine itself to haunting a room or a few private moments. It seeps into every place, every time, every thought. Heath won’t stay a second longer than he must to right the clan’s mistake from back then. At least that’s what he tells himself until he meets Buffy. The woman is wildly different from his dead wife, but he feels an unbelievable connection to her that makes him feel guilty in addition to haunted. Dragons only get one mate, and he’s had his. Or at least, he used to think so. Now, he’s not so sure.

All the same, he failed to protect his wife. He doesn’t deserve a mate.

Buffy isn’t looking for a mate. She can’t even figure out her own dragon. Hoping for a bit of relaxation and some help reconnecting with her increasingly distant and unpredictable beast, Buffy accepts her best friend Jude’s offer of a vacation cabin. The ramshackle hut and ominous lake are anything but relaxing, though, and Jude’s all wrapped up in her new man and her new clan. The only bright spot in this so-called vacation is a gorgeous, but moody neighbor. The attraction Buffy feels for Heath might be worth all the trouble of coming here if only the man weren’t so closed off.

She’ll get him to open up somehow. She and her dragon are beginning to feel like their sanity depends on it.

Keepers of the Lake: Heath is the latest steamy romance by Emilia Hartley. Like all Emilia’s books, it has a strong female lead, a hot shifter male, and a satisfying HEA.

Heath is a broken man. He left the lake 10 years ago when his mate died and he is not happy to be back.
Judes friend Buffy who is also a dragon shifter comes to stay and the attraction is instant but neither will admit their feeling.
Buggy’s dragon does not talk to her and they struggle to communicate, but on seeing Heath keeps pushing her towards him and he is pulled towards her although he tries to fight it as he thinks he can’t love another.
Whilst they are fighting their feelings, Zane is trying to draw her into the lake as his powers increase and it is at this point that Heath realises she is his mate and he can’t fight their love anymore.
This book is so well written and will keep you captivated - you need to read these books in order to fully appreciate the story.

This book is the second book in a new paranormal romance series and starts immediately after Book One finishes. For this reason, you will need to read these books in order.

Heath hasn’t been home for ten years. Not since their previous clan leader turned evil and killed his mate Marnie before being trapped in an underwater prison at the bottom of Lake Superior. Marnie was human and even less able to fight Alistair which isn’t surprising since Cole barely escaped with his life!

Jude has managed to get Heath to return by telling him there’s something he needs to know and it involves Alistair. When he’s greeted by Cole and Asher, he’s even more annoyed at what he perceives to be the beginnings of a family reunion. A family he wants nothing to do with but his anger about that is nothing compared to the rage he feels when he learns that Alistair is free whilst Zane, their clan brother, is trapped in his place and it’s going to take the whole clan to get Zane free.

As if that isn’t bad enough, Heath sees Marnie’s ghost at the waterside. A ghost that has been haunting him for the past ten years. Except it isn’t Marnie…. It’s Jude’s best friend Buffy, who Jude has invited down for a holiday and then practically abandoned!

As with Book one, there is angst aplenty between Heath and Buffy. I found Buffy constantly running away from situations a tad annoying so whilst I had sympathy for Heath and his loss, my sympathy for Buffy was somewhat lacking. I also found the friendship between Buffy and Jude rather distant and strange for best friends. If they truly were best friends, time and distance shouldn’t have made a difference to how close they are and I would have expected Jude to know how scared of water Buffy is. I would have also expected Jude to be more supportive simply because she knows that Buffy is a dragon shifter who grew up a human so there would be plenty of things she wouldn’t know or understand about being a dragon shifter. Despite that however, I did enjoy the book and am looking forward to meeting the rest of the clan and to see how they rescue Zane… if indeed they ever do.

Heath has returned to the site of his mate’s death with extreme reluctance, and has no clue the dangerous secrets that wait beneath the lake that used to be his clan’s responsibility. Buffy’s come to the lake at the request of her old friend, Jude, the new leader of the scattered clan. Heath had love and lost it, Buffy worries that her dragon, which she has a passing relationship with at best, is going to get her killed by shifting in front of the wrong people. The intense feelings that flare between them are going to surprise them both, but with such broken people, is there anything that can come of their mutual attraction?

Heath picks up right where the first book in Hartley’s Keepers of the Lake, Cole, left off. Readers who enjoyed the first story in the series will probably enjoy the book the most, but the story is complete on its own. Hartley’s world of dragons is a treat to read, but the real strength to this book is how Heath and Buffy come together. They’re very different people, both lonely, both needing something they think they can’t have. Their dragons know best, though, and Heath does indeed have a very nice Happy Ever After to cap the story off. Along the way we see old friends Cole, June, and Asher, and find some new twists and turns in the developing story that makes up the heart of the Keepers of the Lake series. Hartley has penned a fantastic follow-up in this book, and I’m excited to see what’s in store for the rest of the series.

I voluntarily read an arc of this book for an honest review. This book was interesting. It’s the second book in this series and we see a little more of the clan returning. Heath hasn’t been back in 10 years, not since he lost his human mate. He’s bitter and angry and wants nothing to do with any of it. He’s not even sure he believes what they’re telling him. Buffy is sunny and bright, she loves making people’s days better and always tries to do so. This book didn’t have much in the way of romance which was a little disappointing. There were some really cute things that happened between them and a certain draw towards each other. I realize Heath was still grieving but I wish it had been a little warmer. The story and interactions between the main characters was a lot of running away. I was frustrated no one thought they should tell Buffy about the danger lurking in the lake. I liked the issues both Heath and Buffy dealt with separately but they just didn’t click or have that moment that makes you go, yes! There it is! I liked that they got together in the end but I wasn’t able to feel the emotion between them other than their dragon’s insisting they were mates. There is a twist to the book I did not see coming and I liked how it was resolved . The book was still really good and worth reading as it furthered the story about this fledgling clan and the danger they’re facing and fighting. Looking forward to Asher’s book, I hope it’s next.

HEATH, the Keepers of the Lake is the second installment in this series by Emilia Hartley. This talented author brings us characters that are headstrong, compassionate, funny, sad and determined.

Heath left ten years ago when his mate was killed by their alpha. Now the new alpha has requested his return. He's not happy about returning but he will listen, then leave again.

Buffy has always felt insecure, never totally as one with her dragon. For awhile now her dragon has been taking control or her, causing blackouts and she doesn't know how to get control back. When her friend Jude invites her to the lake for a relaxing vacation and girl's catch-up time, she says yes, hoping a vacation will help her with her dragon and maybe Jude can help her. Things may be looking up when she meets the sexy, angry dragon in the cabin next door. Then a voice from the lake starts calling her and her blackouts keep happening, even during the day. She is sure she is going to hurt someone or go full-on dragon.

Just as you think Buffy is finding some peace and comfort, more issues and secrets surface. I can't wait to see where things go next.

Heath is not sure why he answered Jude's invitation to his old hometown. She mysteriously referred to something she and Cole needed to talk to him about. When he arrived to find that Asher was already there, the memories of what he had lost the last time the three of them were together threatened to overwhelm him. Then he saw Her- and for just a second he thought she was the mate he had watched die, but it was not Marnie. This woman was a dragon shifter - not a human. His dragon was pushing him toward her, but he refused to let it make him think he had another mate.

Buffy was not sure why her friend Jude had asked her to visit, but she was uncomfortable this close to the lake. She had come hoping to reconnect with her dragon who was taking her over at night and causing her to have blackouts. She was afraid the creature would shift in the city where she lived and expose her. The arrival of Heath was a welcome distraction from her problems, but he didn't seem interested after that first time he laid eyes on her. He tried to avoid her and everyone seemed to have some kind of secret they weren't telling her. Asher seemed happy to flirt with her, but he wasn't her type. Her dragon was throwing her at Heath, but he wasn't cooperating. Jude seemed to be mad at her for seeking out Heath's company, but she wouldn't talk about what his problem was - or her own for that matter. Then Buffy starts hearing a voice in her head trying to entice her towards the water. What the heck is going on?

I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

So many secrets!

Book 2 of the series. If you want, you could start here, but much better when read in order.

Story picks up right after book 1 with Heath having returned to the lake. Jude called him back and also invited her friend Buffy for a visit. Heath's scars are emotional, having lost his mate 10 years ago. He continues to grieve and has not moved on. Buffy is a light, but something he cannot allow himself to have. You only get one mate.

Buffy is dealing with her own issues. Her dragon and her do not see eye to eye and it is getting worse.

Zane is still set on revenge and will not make things easy on them.

I liked the story. Some of the secrets got to be a little much and drive most of the drama. Their group feels like a powder keg just waiting for the spark to set it off. They were drawn there, but can they even still be friends 10 years later?

Asher is becoming my favorite characters and I cannot wait for him to get his happy ever after. He shows his softer side to Buffy and he definitely deserves to be loved.

Can't wait for the next book!

Right off the bat this book drew me in, the main characters both have troubled pasts that bring them to the lake. Heath left the clan after the alpha killed his human mate 10 yrs ago but now he is back to find some answers and maybe get some peace from the haunted life he leads. Buff is have major problems with her dragon and when it takes over the blackouts follow and she is worried she will hurt someone, at the suggestion of her best friend Jude she comes to her friends cabin by the lake to reconnect with her dragon and meets a very sexy but grumpy male named Heath but neither of them are looking for a mate but cannot deny the attraction between them but fight it anyway. Can these two let go of there pasts and have a future together or will the danger, drama and the twists and turns keep them apart.

Heath returns to to the cabins by the lake and encounters Buffy.
Dragon shifter Heath Cumberland had not been in Michigan for ten years but as he approaches the cabins by the lake his memories of blood and grief come to the surface. When last here the leader of of their clan had killed his human mate before they had defeated him.He is greeted by Cole and his new mate golden dragon Jude plus Asher one of the younger members of the clan who tell him that Alistair is not imprisoned in the lake but with the aid of the witch had swapped Zane another young member of the group with himself and that was who had been imprisoned for ten years changed by the magic now angry and vengeful. Later he sees a woman standing looking over the lake and his mind plays tricks but when she turns she is a stranger and is Buffy a childhood friend of Jules who was born after a one night stand and had been unaware that she was a dragon shifter until she became old enough for the change to start taking effect.

This is book 2 in the Keepers of the Lake Series; I strongly suggest you read book 1 (Cole) to better understand the intrigue.
Deeply troubled and emotionnaly closed off Heath has been dragued back to lake Superior after 10 years by Jude, his "former" brother Cole's mate.

He meets Buffy, Jude's childhood friend. She makes him feel all sorts of things ;)
She's here on vacation and to reconnect with her dragon; she's also very unaware of all the other dragons's secrets and drama.
She feels an almost irresistible pull toward the lake; Heath just doesnt want to stay and face his inner demons and feelings.

I really liked and recommend this series !!!
Great continuation on the storyline, with lotsa angst, drama, twists and turns; add a good dose of chemistry, love and deeply rooted friendships and you'll get this very good book.

I received an ARC from Booksprout and I'm leaving an honest review.

Okay, here we go...so, this is book two in Emilia Hartley's "Keepers Of The Lake" series. Don't even consider reading this book as a standalone, you really need to read book one, "Cole" first. Heath is summoned back to the lake where his wife/mate died. Away from here his grief stays with him day after day. But at the lake he is swallowed by it. It surrounds him and it is stifling. The pain coming bringing anger with it. Buffy was talked into coming to the lake for a vacation. Seems Buffy and her dragon are not on the same page. This could be a disaster if the problem isn't found and fixed. There is a chemistry between Buffy and Heath. A "mate" type of chemistry. There are some twists and turns plus a surprise you won't expect. This is a wonderful series, but strap on your seatbelt because this is definitely not a straight road. Oh and hold on, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Has she found her mate only to lose him.
She’s never felt she belonged anywhere. Her mom was human and her dad was a one night stand dragon shifter. She has one good friend named Jude, but when Jude calls Buffy to her she goes to have a vacation in a cabin near Jude and her mate. Two other dragon shifters are there, very close friend of Jude’s mate, but something is going on with them and the mystery of the lake. The more time she spends with them the more frustrated and confused Buffy is. Her dragon believes Heath is her mate, but he always pulls away and her friend Jude says he’s unavailable. And why is Buffy so scared of the lake. It calls to her but she’s afraid. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and I am voluntarily leaving a review..

Heath picks up directly where Cole left off. This is a series you should read in order. The events are directly related and a continuation of the last book so although Heath and Buffy have an individual story you won't understand the rest of the plot.

Heath has come back to the lake after 10 years, he ran when his mate was killed because it was too painful to stay. Coming back made all the memories seem fresh, especially after seeing Buffy and mistaking her for his dead mate.

The creature in the lake calls to her even though her dragon is pulling her in another direction. Will Buffy learn to embrace it and finally listen to what it's trying to tell her? Will Heath trust his instincts and open up again?

I loved seeing how the relationships come about and how everyone is coming together.

This story follows directly from Cole the first book. Buffy has been invited to stay by her friend Jude who is now leading the clan alongside her mate Cole. Buffy feels an immediate connection to Heath but he has already had and lost a mate. Zane continues to create waves from the lake and tries to lure Buffy to him. I really felt for Heath's character as he had not dealt with or moved on from his grief instead he hung on to it as some sort of punishment for failing to protect his mate. Buffy was a ray of sunshine but had always been an outsider as she was brought up by her human mother with minimal contact with other shifters. A great book, looking forward to the next one.

Heath has been called back to the lake that was home during his worst heartbreak, the loss of Marnie. Now the group of ragtag shifters are all grown, with Jude, a golden dragon for the new leader, and her mate, Cole need him to help contain the creature trapped beneath the lake. Buffy, is Jude's best friend, a dragon without roots who has become disconnected from her other half. With the offer of a free vacation and a chance to connect with the only person who has ever understood her, she comes face to face with her fear of the lake and the enigma who is the angry man called Heath. Neither can understand their feelings. Heath has lost his mate and Buffy isn't in tune with her dragon, so neither understands their attraction, but cannot deny it. What follows are a number of encounters with the lake monster, misunderstandings and miscommunication. This author has once again offered up a story with a quirky bunch of characters, strange situations, magic and mayhem. Still clinging to a memory of the past and full of grudge, Heath hadn't moved on but after meeting Buffy something unexpected was fluttering inside him. But, stubborn man, he was still in denial, struggling with his feelings and rejecting the opportunity that fate was facing him with. With her beast detached from her and trying to control her life, things haven't been easy for Buffy. Avoiding closeness, fearing discovery and without hope of a family of her own, she was clinging to a helpful and cheerful personality to survive. Both had been summoned by their friends but, for the same reasons? Interesting Buffy's struggle with her dragon. Annoying that Heath was blind to the obvious. I felt sad for Asher's longings and amused by his antics. Strong emotions, inner fights, doubts, drama, some violence, amusing scenes, romance and passion in this story. Voluntarily reviewed this copy that I received free from Booksprout.

This second chance story is about Heath who returns to the clan after ten years being away since the battle that killed his mate and Buffy a friend of Jude's who is vacationing and staying at one of the cabins. Each have their personal battles to overcome. Heath is angry and being back home brings all the memories of his wife and their times together and Buffy is struggling with being one with her dragon and having memory lost and blackouts. When they meet, Buffy welcomes Heath who rebuffs her. But both are drawn toward each other but when the lake calls to Buffy, does Heath come to help Buffy? This story was enjoyable to read with likable characters, engaging storyline with more depth of the happenings around the lake in a ARC I volunteer to read and Review via Booksprout.

This is the second book in Keepers of the Lake series and this time we have two damaged people both affected by their past who have to find a way to move forward md maybe that is together

Heath doesn't want to return to the lake after all that his where his former leader killed her and other members of the clan it isn't as though he ever forgets her but at the lake the memories are everywhere Buffy has headed to the lake to try to connect with her dragon that is becoming more and more unruly and she definitely doesn't need a man to complicate things The only thing is there is a spark between these two damaged souls Can they be the salvation of one another and do they have a future together You will have to read to see

Second Chance

I am going to have to take the author to task for the name of the female lead character just tell me why she needed to be named Buffy? That mean remind me of the 70s. Now that my nit picking is over I will tell you about the book.

I love dragon stories especially ones that are having a hard time. Jude is bringing all Cole's friends back to the lake.

Jude of course is feeling the need to have a friend near too so enters Buffy.

Now you just need to get the book to find out what is happening at the lake.

I loved this book it's a great addition to this new series, the only thing I didn't like was the name of our female lead, Buffy just didn't work for me. I liked Heath, our dragon shifter who tragically lost his mate years ago and had given up on love that is until he answered a summons to return home and met Buffy.

Buffy is a dragon shifter struggling with her dragon, they met because they shared a mutual friend. But Heath is torn, was he wrong is Buffy his mate, will he be able to let go of his past love and accept the chance he's been given now with Buffy? Is there a HEA waiting for him to claim it?

Heath returns to where he never thought he would. Buffy is invited for a vacation by her friend she has not seen in a long time. She needs to connect with her dragon and hopes this vacation will help.

Heath sees a person by the lake when he arrives thinking it is his dead mates ghost at first.

This one has one thinking they will fight fate and the other hunting their mate. It has action and drama and misunderstandings. Great 2nd book now is Asher going to get his story? Or do we have more characters we do not know about?

While Heath has been consumed by grief since the great battle, Buffy has never really connected with her dragon so both have been moving through life a little disconnected and alone. Until Jude brings them both to the lakeshore and their dragons have a completely new plan for them. I loved the depth of emotions as Heath and Buffy struggled through their personal challenges and their relationship blossomed. Of course, Emilia has me waiting not so patiently for the next book to learn more about their friend in the lake and what’s going to happen next.

Heath comes back home and is still upset about what happened with Alistair and Cole's part in his leaving in the first place. Jude demanded that he return for Zane even though they have not been able to come up with a way to help him, Jude invites her best friend Buffy to visit. And when Buffy lands she is taken right away with Heath but he is still not open to another woman in his life, but Asher thinks that he might want to see if he and Buffy have anything in common. Lots of drama and suspense, romance. and some fun. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Heath suffered the devastating loss of his mate when the clan leader turned against them. Time has not healed the wound. Now Heath has returned to Michigan, the lake, and what is left of his clan. He will be hit with more than one surprise when he arrives. Buffy has come to visit her friend Jude and to see if she can reconnect with her dragon. Buffy is the type of person who hides her pain behind a blindingly bright façade. Some good action and a well written coming together of two lonely hurting souls. I recommend this read.

Who is Heath? What happens when he sees Cole and Asher? Who is Buffy? Where did she come from and why is she there? How do we come to meet Buffy's dragon? What do we learn about her and her dragon? What happens when Asher, Heath, and Buffy go out for coffee? I feel bad for Buffy, not understading why she was asked to come to the cabins. Heath is curmudgeony!!! What happens when Buffy is pulled under the lake's surface? What shocking thing do we learn about Buffy's family? Read and see! Oh goodness, this was a edge of the seat sitting book for me!

Heath has been called back to the Lake by Cole and Jude, they need to keep Zane in the lake until they've sorted out a plan. Heath hates being there, it's where he lost his mate and he's never really recovered or let the guilt go.
Buffy has been invited by Jude for a holiday, but when she arrives she feels even more of an outsider, there's a secret which no one is sharing. She's attracted to Heath but he's very dour and keeps disappearing off. She feels pulled towards the lake even though she hates water.
Asher tries to flirt with Buffy but Heath growls at him and isn't happy about it, but can't work out why.
Then Buffy finds out who her father was and feels that she should leave, but she isn't strong enough, will they turn her out?
Another great read in the series from Emilia.

Book 2 in the Keepers of the Lake Series. Another great Journey to Love!

Buffy is half dragon and half human. She has never really understood her dragon and Jude was the only person who ever tried to help her. She has come to visit Jude to try and reconnect with her and get some help with her wayward dragon! She is immediately drawn to Heath and her dragon agrees.

Jude has called Heath home to the lake because they need his help trying to control the dragon trapped under the lake. Heath hates being back there because everything reminds him of his wife he lost. He pretty much hates everything and everyone there. He is totally confused when his dragon is drawn to Buffy.

Amid all the confusion and fighting and anger, can they ever see that they were meant to be together?

Embrace your fear
Everyone handles loss differently and Heath has wrapped his up in anger and pain. The author showed his emotional angst with such detail that you could feel it oozing off the pages. Throw in a dead ringer for his lost mate and things really start to get interesting. I love how they both have their own issues to overcome before they can connect and the inevitable coming together that was so sweet after such an emotional roller coaster. This book is a fantastic edition to this series, and I can’t wait to see what befalls this slowly rebuilding clan next.

Book two starts where book one ends.....

Heath is not happy to be back, in fact he’s angry! Losing your mate can devastate a dragon. He bounces at clubs for a living now, he never seeks out company, only a bottle! Talking to his dead wife was his only companion. So why was he back? Jade was a force not to be ignored, not taking no for an answer, and being cryptic with her invitation.

Buffy wants a quite life, being born to a human mother, Buffy had lived a human life and that hadn’t been bad. It was when she turned into a dragon that things with her mother got awkward. Her only real friend had been Jade, so when her friend had suggested a holiday, Buffy was hesitant at first, but jade was relentless, so here she was, stuck in the middle of nowhere, watching her friend cozy up to her new man. And even worse, her dragon side was playing up!!

It’s definitely not love at first sight! Buffy might be enamoured with her gorgeous neighbour, but the feelings weren’t reciprocated.
And when Heath finally finds out why he’s here, he begrudgingly agrees, but he will finish the job and go. No way is he going to stay around and watch his friend and his new mate. Not even the wonderful smelling dragon will persuade him!
But slowly Buffy makes friends with Heath, he stays away from Asher and Cole as much as he can (he holds them responsible for the death of his mate and a missing clan member) but Buffy grows on him with each passing day. That in its self is concerning, he should be mourning his dead mate, not spending time with another woman! But his dragon disagrees and nudges him in her direction.
Buffy is still scared at her loss of time, she wakes up in the morning not knowing where she has been, or what she’s done! Is it her dragon? She needs to connect with it, but it’s still not talking to her!!

You definitely need to read the first book. Without giving too much away it is pivotal to this book and probably the next.
The monster in the lake might not be free, but it’s presence is felt by all.

Another angst filled story! A very slow burn story, just a few kisses and the promise of passion!! Both Buffy and Heath have issues, both are wary of new people. But they can’t help being drawn to one another.
But with Heath’s distrust and Buffy’s blackouts, how can they move forward? Can Heath really have another mate? (It’s says you only get one mate in your lifetime) maybe they can be friends?
But will the monster in the lake try to lure Buffy into freeing it? And can Heath pull his head out of his butt and finally claim his happy ending?

And the next book please ......
