Back in 2018, Harlequin France Xmas' editions really were something. Hardcover, glitter, and painted edges for only 10 euros. A gorgeous item, only slightly tarnished by a few typos.
The story is an Xmas classic : snow, hotel threatened by heartless businessmen, an endearing child and a tight-bounded team dreaming to see the main characters ending together.
Guaranteed marshmallow atmosphere, it really tastes like Xmas movies, a nice surprise after a few disappointing reads on that side. However, as the story progresses some flaws appear : Marnie keeps her secret much longer than necessary and the couple's communication issues feel more artificial as time passes, creating unnecessary slow-downs in the plot. It's not THAT annoying, but still a shame, especially since the end feels rushed despite an epilogue telling what happened in-between.
But if it's not perfect, it's not a reason to miss it. It's sweet, cute, and, I'll say it again, the atmosphere really is here. We can feel how close the Mirabel team is, even if we don't see them much, and the enchanting beauty of the house is perfectly transcribed. There's no negativity either : no anger between Marnie and her intrusive family (she just needs to breathe), and Luke's first wive's passing is far enough for him to be ready for love again.
There's exactly all we look for in such a story in this one... just with the addition of a few flaws.
