In November 2018, with the legalization of sports betting on the horizon, WagerEasy, a Euro sports betting conglomerate, set up shop in the Chicago market looking for shortcuts. Eddie’s old friend, an employee of WagerEasy, has been murdered. The sports gambling market is on a knife’s edge: the illegal black market bookies backed by the mob against the well-funded foreign invader. Eddie and his uncle, retired police detective Mike O’Connell with the right contacts, set up a meeting with a Chicago gambling boss suspected of ordering the murder. The Chicago gambling boss claims WagerEasy, the new threat in town, is framing him.
Eddie decides to go undercover and secures a job at WagerEasy. With the assistance of industry insider Tara Reilly, Eddie discovers that ruthless factions within the mob are fighting to overthrow the old guard and upend WagerEasy’s move into Chicago. Eddie finds enemies coming at him from all angles and must risk everything to get justice.

This mystery features Eddie O’Connell just starting out as a private investigator while still working as a bartender to pay off his gambling debts. Because Eddie is a fan of gambling, he knows people who work on the wrong side of the law. When he comes across the gruesomely murdered body of a friend of his, Jimmy, he draws on his uncle, a respected retired police detective, as well as his connections in the mafia to figure out who killed him.
The novel is set just as some states are allowing sports gambling to be legalized. Now there is a rift between so-called legitimate businesses like WagerEasy, the company where Jimmy worked at the time of his murder, and the bookies with their lists of high rollers. This is a complex story with a few mysteries happening at the same time and a lot of characters to keep straight. But even though I know nothing about sports or gambling or sports gambling, and even though I never took a class in finance, I was able to follow Eddie as he put together the pieces to solve the crime—he uses his ability to bluff to get information out of people or pose as a WagerEasy employee despite actually being a bartender and aspiring PI.
Once again a first time author with zero reviews that i won on Goodreads giveaway. Why do i do this to myself? I need help, just like the degenerate gamblers in this book. But once again i will give an honest review
I'm sure you see all those gambling ads on tv. Today you can make a bet on a game as it's being played. With the legalization of sports gambling it has cut into the profits of the bookies. But what do the bookies have that the sports betting conglomerate want? The names of the high rollers. Strange bedfellows.
The book was too long and too dry. Gambling should be fun, this wasn't. Eddie lacked the personality of a gambler and his uncle Mike lacked the wisdom of a retired detective. Ms Yuri Provost and her attorney Ms St Clair would make an interesting read. Lady Luck crapped out with this book.
A sketchy bartender with a gambling problem is trying to become a PI. Gambling is becoming legal in Illinois because the state needs the money to waste.
When a friend of his working for gambling corporation is murdered, he tries to find out whudunit, and runs into the mob, and a corporation that acts just like them, all while trying to cope with his gambling addiction.
Partial blurb: In November, 2018, with legalization of sports betting on the horizon, WagerEasy, a Euro sports betting conglomerate, has set up shop in the Chicago market looking for shortcuts. Eddie’s old friend, an employee of WagerEasy, has been murdered. Welcome to the underbelly of sports betting. I really enjoyed learning about this sometimes dark world of interconnections between legit companies, the mob, and other devious groups, all trying to get their piece of a gambler's money. Farrell does a great job of character description, and he keeps the suspense going throughout the novel. With some good twists and a well-developed plot, I never guessed ahead of time, who killed his friend. I will be buying the next book in this series as soon as it's available!
I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway for my honest review. I loved this mystery. Very well written, great plot, kept you guessing. There were so many suspects and motive it kept you guessing. I didn't figure it out 100%, that's why I liked it so much it threw me off. Eddie is investigating his friends murder along with his Uncle Mike a retired police detective. 🚔 Eddie's friend Jimmy gets murdered horrifically after getting a regular job at WagerEasy an online betting platform. Eddie feels things aren't on the up and up at WagerEasy and schmoozes his way into a job at WagerEasy to flush out the murderer, not only has his friend been murdered. But his neighborhood bookie Oscar has been murdered also. His Uncles long time partner Liz, who is still on the force, also gets critically injured and is in a coma. Eddie and Uncle Mike also almost get killed when they flushed the murderers out. An awesome book with an awesome plot. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves mysteries. ❤️
This is my first time reading a mystery book on sports betting but it's one of the things that caught my attention.
A very high speed, old school gangster shoot 'em up mystery. I enjoyed it very much. Lots of twists and turns. Some of which happened so fast I had to go back and re-read a page or two or I would've missed it.
Never a dull moment. Definitely a book series I would want to re-visit. I recommend, especially if you're like me and love things that remind you of Good Fellas and Casino.
I got this book as a goodreads giveaway and really enjoyed it. Lots of action and surprises. Eddie is trying to get a PI business going while tending bar at his uncles. His uncle is a retired Chicago cop who does investigations for a mob boss. A friend of Eddies is murdered along with two of his associates from WagerEasy a company looking to capitalize on the pending legalization of gambling in Illinois. Bullets fly all over as a bookie Eddy knows is murdered and then the lieutenant investigating the murder of Eddies friend who is also uncles old partner in the police department is shot up in a major gun battle at the race track. Lots of stories inside stories with a lot of twists and turns and a surprise ending. Look forward to reading more from Tom Farrell
Eddie O'Connell was raised by his Uncle Mike, a retired Chicago detective who owns O'Connell's Bar. Eddie is a bartender there and keeps the local bookies busy placing his bets.
One day Uncle Mike gets a call from Liz, his former partner when he was a detective. Everyone always valued Mike's opinion when he first laid eyes on a crime scene. And the gruesome one Liz described to him on the phone was no exception, so she asked him to meet her there for his thoughts. Mike brought his nephew Eddie with him.
The crime scene was an old abandoned warehouse. Upon entering they were shocked at what they saw. A man was strung up with ropes attached to all his limbs from a ceiling beam. His groin area had been burned with a blowtorch, the weapon lying nearby. Another two bodies lay on the floor with gunshot wounds. The scene would later be described as the blowtorch murders. Although he said nothing out loud at the time, Eddie immediately recognized the burn victim as his pal, Jimmy, from the race track.
Uncle Mike still had a lot of friends in the police department who frequented his tavern. Although gambling was not yet legal in Illinois, the local bookies had their hands full taking & paying bets. Some of them also gathered in O'Connell's Bar. Legalized gambling was making strides within the state government, something of concern to the bookies.
A company called WagerEasy had been formed with a new perspective on gambling. It proposed 'in-play interactive gambling,' where one could place a bet on an upcoming pass, field goal, or any other action soon to take place within minutes on the field. Eddie was hired by Walsh, the owner of WagerEasy, where he met a co-worker, Tara (not who she professed to be), & with whom he had a relationship. Why Walsh hired Eddie was an interesting subplot within the book.
This is the backdrop for the story, which I think you'll like.
I won this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway. I will limit spoilers and will leave them for the bottom of the review if included.
This book was an excellent murder mystery/whodunit. The writing was fast paced and made for a fun reading experience. I ran through the book in a couple hours because I wanted to find out who was behind everything. The characters were well written and it seems primed for more stories(This book had a prequel excerpt in the back.) If you find joy in sports betting, this book has that, mixed with murder, crime, and fast paced action, which can be hard to write sometimes. It focuses on a select few sports, but the can references are easy and create vivid imagery of old horse racetracks and sports betting.
With new characters appearing sporadically, the author does not bog you down with trying to remember everyone, as he establishes characters before throwing more at you. In a mystery book, this is a nice touch that allows you to develop and try to guess who is the mastermind without making it obvious or easy to guess. The ending was sudden, as I had not realized how much I had read and when it was over and everything clicked. It was an exciting finish.
I would recommend for anyone who likes gambling stories, murder mysteries, or a casual afternoon read.
Thank you to author Tom Farrell for this FREE Kindle copy of WagerEasy: A Sports Betting Mystery Thriller.
I liked it. An apt title for this well paced mystery thriller. Sports betting is big business and the lure of greater market share means that anyone in the way will be steamrolled in the race for the almighty dollar. The many characters are well fleshed and humanized with flaws. Well written and edited, with a nicely done cover highlighting the books title. The book focusing on the fight and search for new ways to pull more money from the masses, but does touch on the detrimental effects below the surface. The mental and physical addiction gambling (casinos, lotteries, etc) has on people to become another money funnel for the wealthy and privileged few. A good read.
Tom Farrell’s novel delivers an old-fashioned-style crime story set in our current technologically centric world. I give it five stars for fun. The tale is rich in descriptive Chicago references and provides insight on gamblers’ constant obsession for seeking that scrap of information to give them a betting edge. Tom creates a colorful list of suspects and carries the suspense of “who’s guilty” all the way to the end. If you’re looking for an entertaining read, WagerEasy is the ticket.
I thought I won this book from Goodreads-Giveaway, Amazon Kindle but I can't find it in my inbox or books. Anyway, I read it. I did enjoy the mystery of Eddie & Uncle Mike. I don't know much about betting the horses or other animals or betting, I love slots. You don't have to know about it to enjoy this book. It is about a chip though that could be put in your body to monitor your body - fight it!
Keeps you on the edge of your seat. Lots of twists and turns that make you think one thing then think something totally different. Well worth the read!
Is there a risk of fraud at the online bookmaker 1XBet? This is a question that many cautious but interested players ask themselves. In this detailed 1XBet review, we get to the bottom of the questions of how 1XBet knows how to convince, what 1XBet has to offer and where 1XBet's weaknesses can be identified. Thanks to our accumulated experience, we can guarantee right from the start: We are not aware of any 1XBet gh fraud. However, we do know of a customer-friendly app and an attractive bonus. Furthermore, we recognized in our detailed test report that there are numerous methods available for depositing and withdrawing sports bets from this online betting provider.
The facts about the bookmaker
In 2007 the online bookmaker 1XBet was launched. The betting provider from Russia has more than 1,000 offline betting offices. In the portfolio, users will find sports betting, casino games, poker and much more. m. The safety & seriousness is u. a. guaranteed by a valid license. Users can reach staff 24/7 via phone, live chat & email. A well-programmed 1XBet app allows gaming on the go. New players collect up to 100 euros with the attractive 1XBet bonus.
1xBet – fraud or not? The fear of a 1XBet fraud is incomprehensible. The Russian online bookmaker was launched in 2007. Since then operators in Russia have set up over 1,000 offline betting shops. You can find betting booths in every major city in Russia. In the World Wide Web, 1XBet has constantly expanded its range and thus its customer base in recent years. So it is no coincidence that 1XBet performs well in our large betting provider comparison. As soon as the player gets used to the look of the platform as a new visitor, he quickly feels comfortable and at home.
1XBet can refer to well-known partners
Although the online bookmaker 1XBet comes from Russia and has numerous betting shops in larger cities there, the operators concentrate on the entire world in terms of marketing. Especially in Europe, the betting provider is trying to gain a foothold, fight for credibility and generate new customers. Some partnerships with well-known sports clubs, for example, speak for the security and seriousness of the company. 1XBet is the official partner of the football clubs Tottenham Hotspurs and Cardiff City. The eSports group HellRaisers also recently announced cooperation with the online bookmaker from Russia. In addition, the company introduces itself to its visitors on the home page in a very friendly and relaxed manner. The text says that they are the largest bookmaker in the CIS countries and that they want to offer players more than just the opportunity to bet money on sporting events online. Upon closer inspection, we quickly realize that while the focus is on sports betting, we also realize that there is actually more to discover on the site.
Valid gambling license from Curacao
In this review, we don't just want to give our readers a better look at the online bookmaker from Russia. Above all, we would like to take away the absolutely unfounded fear of every interested player that a 1XBet fraud could be feared. In our experience, there has not been an incident in recent years that would suggest such an assumption. Possibly these prejudices only came about because 1XBet is a Russian betting provider and not an online bookmaker from Central Europe or even Germany. The fact that 1XBet is absolutely entitled to legally offer gambling offline in Russia and online on the World Wide Web is proven by the valid gambling license from Curacao. Other well-known platforms also resort to the possibility of licensing in this country, simply because the taxes to be paid are significantly lower - so it is not uncommon and certainly not an indication of a 1XBet fraud. In our experience, more than 400,000 satisfied customers worldwide and more than 1,000 betting shops in Russia alone speak a clearly positive and very trustworthy language.
Great audiobook! The narrator does such a great job with Uncle Mike. This series is such fun, even if you don't know anything about sports, sports betting, or horse racing. Because the characters and the neighborhood become so familiar that, even though I grew up in the desert far far away from Chicago, I felt like I knew the places described. The minor characters become alive and give the story a realistic, lived-in feeling, from the mob fall guy to the battle axe corporate lawyer to the ladies at the bar who bet every week hoping to fund a vacation. Highly recommend listening to the audio to get the full range of fun characters.
This book was definitely not my cup of Tea. Not a book that I would normally pick up. That being said, it may be something you enjoy. The topic sand the characters are interesting. Again, not usually a topic I would pick.
The descriptions of Gambling did not Keep my interest. The style of writing was not as strong as I normally would like to read. Incan see lots of potential for future writing.
It took me a while to get interested in this book. I think it took me a while to learn about the betting aspect. Once it got more into the murders and plot is when it became more interesting for me. I enjoyed Eddie and Uncle Mike and their relationship. It was a good mystery as I was guessing between different suspects.
I’ll give this 3 1/2 stars. Overall well written. I did have a problem with the military angle - really? Why? Trying too hard to make sure the characters all had a reason to be involved. Maybe there are too many characters? This book was a great way to learn about the gambling business in this country. I live in a state that just legalized online wagering this year and I am no longer confused as to why every other TV ad is for a gambling site. I’ve never done much gambling, and after reading this book I’ll continue to leave it to others. As I mentioned, the plot was a little too complicated, too many characters with too many motives. But still enjoyed overall.
