Rancher's Word #4

Have My Word

Rate this book
An American historical romance about trusting others to form a new family.

Kansas Rancher Asher Brenner was relieved to escort Alva Wilerson to the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair instead of continuing on the planned train trip to Texas with his brothers and her cousins.

Shy and reserved, Asher had secretly admired Alva for years but was hesitant to court her. This trip together was the perfect opportunity to explore a budding relationship and the possible dream of a future together, raising sheep and a family on Asher’s grandfather’s ranch.

Alva has always wished Asher would look her way because they had so many common interests, from their mutual love of books to lambs and sheepdogs. But instead of exploring the fair exhibits, Alva and Asher find themselves trying to solve a mystery in the back alleys of Chicago.

Can they find the abandoned children and save them from harm before returning to Kansas?

FINDING FAMILY CONNECTIONS

As an avid reader and huge fan of Ms. Linda Hubalek's historical books, I was thrilled to start this series and realize it is a spin-off from the previous Clear Creek stories. As a series junkie, I fall in love with the characters and town, and when a new series picks up from the previous ones, that is even better. The story will be about Asher Brenner, the adopted son of Sarah Wilerson and Marcus Brenner. After separating from the group of six, Alva Wilerson and Asher will travel to Chicago to attend the 1893 World’s Fair.

Asher and Alva will be fortunate to locate two motel rooms in town with the influx of visitors to the area. After their first day, dealing with being tired and rain, someone grabs Alva’s reticule and takes off—while Asher can retrieve it, the young boy will escape. Now, both Alva and Asher are concerned about a child on the streets. The next day, they decide to return to the area with a bag of food, hoping to coax the child out; they discover two boys, and one is injured. This will be the beginning of a new adventure for them.

“Alva would never have guessed when she read the newspaper article about the Chicago World’s fair that their decision to travel here would radically change their lives.”

After getting the boy's food and medical care, cleaning them up, and letting them rest, they will talk about what needs to happen next. Asher will go searching for where the boys may have been last and if they are adaptable. Taking the boys with them to the fair the next day will include Alva and Asher saying wedding vows and making plans for their future with two boys and sheep—but everything can change within a day. In a moment, the boys are gone; they cannot find them; Asher is so upset with himself. But, they can’t stay longer in Chicago; they have to stop on their way back to Kansas and look at sheep for sale and return home.

“Alva knew he mourned the loss of the new life they’d envisioned, but he was taking this too far. If he shut down over their first “better or worse” situation, how would he handle a life-or-death circumstance?”

I loved the story, how Asher was able to be open and at ease when it was just him and Alva on the trip to Chicago—he was like a different person than when they were all together as a group. These two even start talking about what they want for their future together—could they both have the same hopes and dreams—and maybe sheep instead of cattle. But, coming from the backgrounds they both had when two boys needed a loving home, they were more than willing to alter those plans to include Henry and Thad Sullivan. Life is like a vapor; it’s there and then gone—and for Alva and Asher, that was the situation with Henry and Thad—now they are gone, and their hearts are broken.

The story has several surprising twists and turns and how everything just falls into place. A previously arranged side trip to view, purchase, and make arrangements for the sheep comes with surprises. The future isn’t so bleak, and happiness was one train stop away.

“Asher reached for Alva’s hand again. For better or worse. Alva was right. There would be highs and lows during their life together. Today was an example of both.”

Asher Brenner and Alva Wilerson's story. The story of the train trip to find roots for the Brenner triplets and the Wilerson girls continue in this well written story. Three young men and women off to find the truth about the beginning of their lives.
Asher and Alva decide with the others to split their trip into three separate trips when the girls decide they each want to go a different direction. This turns out to be the best decision they make on their journey.
Alva wants to visit the Chicago Worlds Fair, and Asher agrees to escort her. He secretly wants to spend time with her.
This story grabs you quickly and keeps you reading. Henry and Thad, two young boys living on the streets and trying hard to survive will keep you on your toes and turning the next page to find out what they do next.
This book is a must read to see how the events unfold. Fantastic story and the players are so well written you feel as if you are right there with them! I recommend this new series! This is book 4

The author has penned a story that will keep you turning the pages to see what is going to happen next. This is Asher Brenner (adopted son of Sarah Wilerson and Marcus Brenner from the Clear Creek series) and Alva Wilerson. After splitting with their group of traveling friends and family, they decide to head to the Chicago Worlds Fair. Shortly after they arrived, Alva had her bag stolen by a young boy. They set out to try and find the boy and discover him and two of his friends. The boys will add lots of excitement to the story. While Asher and Alva have each secretly admired the other they have never embarked upon any type of relationship beyond friends. Will this be the time their friendship evolves into a relationship and reaches a HEA. Be sure to read this great story to find out. I know you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Asher and Alva's Story!

Asher and Alva were traveling with family and read a newspaper article about the Chicago World's Fair that was in progress. They left the group and went to Chicago. They enjoyed the fair, but ran into two street urchins who stole Alva's purse. The couple pursued the boys but they got away in an alley. A hole in the wall of the building was noticed and Asher and Alva returned to the scene bringing food. They discovered one of the boys was very sick and they talked the boys into going with them in exchange for more food and a bed to sleep in. They took the boys for medical treatment after spending the night in a hotel. After learning that the orphanage where the boys had lived was closed down, they decided to offer the boys a home. Read the rest of the story.

Such a sweet, sweet story. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

Chicago World's Fair here we come!

This book, another in the continuing saga of the Clear Creek brides, is a great read. The pickpocket who stole her purse also stole her heart. And she did not want it back.
These heartwarming stories tell of deep and abiding love between old friends and new. Honest men, strong of courage and reliable, pair up with amazing women who are not afraid to stand up for what is right. Ms. Hubalek has done a fabulous job in creating this delightful set of characters sand their families, tying their histories together in a loving and caring community in Clear Creek. Thanks for yet another astoundingly goodread.

A great clean historical romance

Another followup on grandchildren in the Clear Creek community with plenty of drama, children, excitement and a wedding. The excitement begins when Asher and Alvae decide to attend the World Fair in Chicago rather than traveling to Texas! You'll enjoy learning about all their experiences involving discovery of two male orphans, a wedding, loss of children, discovering new connection with relatives, purchasing livestock for Kansas ranch AND moving everything to Clear Creek!

Asher and Alva have a great idea to visit the world's fair in Chicago. They are so outside of their comfort zone but having a great time until a tiny hurdle with almost having her purse stolen turns the hands of fate in their favor. Another wonderful story of the families!! I read a book funnel version and freely leave my review

Sweet Historical Romance

The saga contines, but this time in Chicago! I loved their first romp in the rain and the discoveries at the sheep ranch! This is such an enjoyable series, and I love all the interconnections these families in and out of Clear Creek have. Linda is a master weaver of tales of connectivity!

Oh my, the Brenner family just can’t seem to avoid attracting children in need. Only Alva and Asher could go to see the World’s Fair and return with orphan boys. I have loved every one of the books in this and previous series. The Pea Shooter Society will be busy for years to come. Treat yourself to the joy in this one. Linda K. Hubalek has made 5 people very happy.

Continuing on in the series where six cousins – by adoption - are headed to Texas to visit a ranch, Asher and Alva have gotten off of the train in Chicago to go to the World’s Fair. Life-changing events take place in Chicago. Just remember – it’s a small, small world.
Really good continuation of this series.
Well done, Linda Hubalek.
