The Victors Project

Rate this book
Before Katniss and Peeta, seventy-three children won the Hunger Games. Some were brutal. Some were clever. Some were lucky. A few were almost decent. These are their stories. This is the Victors Project.

This extended universe is a fascinating, well-constructed, beautifully told look at the history of Panem through the lens of the various Victors' lives. Its accompanying stories "The Lumberjack and the Tree-Elf," "Fall Into the River," and "The Bonds of Blood" are all excellent as well; just as heart-stoppingly paced and emotional as anything in the canon trilogy, in my opinion. If you (like many) weren't quite satisfied by Ms. Collins's canon prequel, I would highly recommend you give this series a try!

a decade after realizing fanfic is not for me, i have finally successfully read one

that being said, some of the dialogue was unforgivable ! this commits many fanfiction writing crimes (h*rry potter reference, dubious characterization, "gale growled", etc) but i understand that is simply the name of the game here....

really did not care for the post 75th games plot but all around worth it for the victor stories

This fanfic, my first of its kind, made an already rich universe even richer. I read the original series back in 2020 and never got to rewatching the movies after reading each book. I found it looking for some information I’d forgotten and when I think of it I’m not sure if I ever found it; instead I stumbled upon The Victor’s Project, and to be honest, didn’t think I’d read more than one or two chapters. First mistake made. I devoured every victor created (and recreated), and somehow the whole collection of characters, worldbiulding and details managed to one up the work of Mrs. Collins herself. I was so glad to find TVP up on Goodreads and quickly put it on “Currently reading” bookshelf.

I said many times in the past I would never read any fanfics. This one didn’t feel like one; it felt genuinely established in the same Panem of the trilogy. I’m proud to call TVP the first fanfic I´ve read.

Fleshed out characters I quickly loved, some I still want to know about (mostly the ones whose chapters were destined for moments with older victors). I also read Secrets & Quell, will shortly read Arrow and hope to read all three books in The Victors Trilogy in a not so distant future.

Many times I wanted a physical copy of TVP, one time I even thought of the design of it all. A black hardcover book with a golden embossed spine, a cover with 75 abstract but recognizable portraits; inside sharing each of the stories, pictures and/or paintings (thinking as if they were Peeta’s own work) of the moments depicted, scrapbook-like; an appendix with your notes, and the other stories built around these characters. I had fun thinking about that.

This "nameless" man is truly an amazing writer, I wish I knew his real name and the name of his original series (the one he talks about in the epilogue) or any other work I can get my hands on.

One of the best hunger games fanfiction ever! I cried. The world building is truly fantastic and special. The character development for the majority of these original characters is highly developed. I will say that at times the line between comedy and horror gets somewhat campy/cheesy and I didn’t love the Mockingjay/District 14 plot line that much.

One of THE best fanfictions I've ever read! And it's crazy accurate considering the prequels weren't out when this was written!

This was a great fanfiction. The author clearly thought out how the Hunger Games world worked and how past Victors would be like, creating an engaging creation with great OCs. While I have some worldbuilding quibbles, they are extremely minor, and this fic still seems like it could fit in very well with canon.

Speaking of canon, even though it’s a fanfiction, it seems like the Hunger Games books even more than the official prequel. Even though I liked the prequel, the fanfiction seems more plausible somehow. There are some parts in this fanfic that are like a Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, most notably the Tenth Hunger Games victor and the Campers. The way the Games evolve over time is much more organic than in A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and even Snow’s rise to power is more similar in tone to the original Hunger Games.

This is just a great little series of vignettes connected by a framing device of Johanna collecting all the stories of the Victors. This is an amazing fanfiction, with several interconnected plots and character arcs even if it just seems like a collections of short stories. Some of the Victors don’t appear again, but most of them are great characters, even when I hate them. What an experience.
