I so enjoyed this book, and didn't really want it to end; however, I now know there is a sequel in the works, so looking forward to that in the future.

I enjoyed the characters in this book, and getting to know them. It was almost as if I actually knew them, and I enjoyed learning about their life & adventures. There were twists & turns along the way, and some pleasant surprises - which made me laugh, cry & rejoice. I love the work that Lewis Pennington does, and I look forward to more books by him.

The easiest five stars I've ever given a book.

I struggle to even start this review, as I've just finished the book. I read all the high ratings for this book and I have to admit-I wondered if they were exaggerating. And now I can say without a doubt-they were not!

I love history: reading about it and watching shows about it, but it's about the Revolutionary War, or most often, it's about British Isles and specifically Scottish history that I read and love. I never read anything in the Civil War era. Even after visiting Gettysburg. It just doesn't interest me in the way the other time periods do. Until this book!

Such colorfully fleshed out characters with depth, human flaws and strength of character that this author has written! I started this book in the morning and now it's 10:30 pm and I've just finished. This is one of those books you do NOT want to put down once you start, so get comfy and do your chores before you do. My husband said I was in another world while reading this, and truthfully, I really needed that in this stressful time we're living in. I was in a reading slump and I realize I have missed being taken away to another world where you aren't even aware there are people in your house asking you questions! They actually want dinner? When you're reading?!

I loved the storyline, the characters, the time travel aspect-everything! There is no filler or fluff here. The author writes a TIGHT storyline. You will be on the edge of your seat at times and tearing up the next. I know the book blurb gives you the details of the story, but it doesn't tell you what a wonderful storyteller this author really is. I have not read a book this good in years, and the way he ended it makes me hope and believe this will be a series! Oh please Mr. Pennington!

The U.S. Civil War was the most brutal event in U.S. history. Lewis Pennington has taken this conflict into a dramatic story of love and survival. The Winslow plantation is better known as the Willow Creek Plantation where Spoon is often heard entertaining groups with his ability to play tunes with two silver spoons. He is beloved by all who know him.

Mase Winslow’s sister Annabelle was raped just prior to his reporting for duty and the prime suspect is Spoon. The penalty was to be death, but Mase does not have the heart to kill his best friend and whips Spoon to within an inch of his life. But he can't handle the guilt.

Trauma amnesia is the result and Paul cannot recall the incident.

Paul Talbert has a passion for writing and works for a large New York newspaper. His early life is a ghostly memory and he does not understand why, so he goes back to Beaufort County, South Carolina to try and recover some of his memories. The memory of a beautiful old antebellum colonial mansion is actually a broken-down shopping mall. Could his recollection be so far from accurate?

Memory stones are a portal to different dimensions and times. The user need only squeeze the stone to be transported to another place and time but memories and identities are not taken intact from one time to the other.

This tale is a wonderful adventure into the musings we all have; “if we could turn back time?” The characters are engaging, endearing, and feel real. I suggest anyone who has daydreamed about going into the past or future enjoy this ride authored by Lewis Pennington. 5 stars - CE Williams

You don’t want to miss the saga that is The Memory Stones. It will break your heart and mend it at the same time, all while weaving an adroit tale rooted in human connection, redemption, forgiveness, pain, and the imagery of fighting like hell even when it may seem futile - which barely begins to scratch the surface. And you, dear reader, just have to commit to experiencing this journey across time.

As soon as I started The Memory Stones, I was pulled in! There was this immediate draw into a world of family forged of blood and bonds, proving that love is what you make of it. The author does a masterful job of establishing deeply affectionate connections between his cast in such a way that felt exceptionally natural and swift. Pennington’s characterization was marvelous, and I can say with complete honesty that I do not think I have ever gotten attached to characters as quickly as I did to his. Pennington establishes seamless bonds between people early on, and the warmth between different combinations of characters, such as between father and son or two friends, was palpable. The dynamics felt so fleshed out and richly persuasive that you can only imagine how my heartfelt when characters were torn from each other or led astray.

Admittedly, I adore historical fiction but read so little of it, so I was excited to have an excuse to delve into this book. The Memory Stones partially takes place during the Civil War, one of my favorite points in history to explore due to the internal conflicts the U.S. was rife with. Despite the natural beauty of the South, neighbors were at war physically and philosophically, and Pennington painted the South in all its natural exquisiteness throughout his narrative without forgetting that the land’s allure was not without its unsightly blemishes and misconceptions. Despite the breathtaking scenery and the area’s charmingness, there was the understanding that the South was built on the backs of those who were enslaved and beaten. Yet, Mase’s family was different. His clan understood that color should not define worth or station, and they also upheld that friendship does not have to be stunted by race. On a different note, I also found the Civil War setting interesting because of the way it paralleled our protagonist’s own state - one in which he was at war with himself because of his decisions and tumultuous emotions. This parallel furthered the weight of the story and sharpened the drama.

Above all else, this story thoughtfully illustrates the resilience of the human spirit while simultaneously portraying a hope and kindness this world so desperately needs. Among a cast of phenomenal characters, Spoon truly stole the show in his own unique way. Spoon gets put through the wringer yet continually comes out of adversity with a beautiful outlook on life in spite of circumstances and people constantly trying to crush him, whether that be intentionally or unintentionally. He provides absolution in the darkest of times, penetrating even the worst of shadows with love and altruism. Spoon is simply one of those characters you aspire to be because you can’t help but radiate optimism after he comes on the page and blows you away with tenderness. When it comes to Mase, he is a character who committed a grave act of violence. The young man understands his serious lapse in judgment is one that is sickening, but he also learns that you can still take steps in the right direction and make a positive change despite doing the unthinkable.

By the end of The Memory Stones, I was blown away by how the author fit all the pieces together. My heart was pounding every second of the story as it begged the question: What can be done when we don’t give up?
If you enjoy historical fiction or time travel, you won’t want to pass this story up! It’s a thriller with grit and heart, entwining a deft plight of survival and forgiveness.

The Memory Stones by Author Lewis Pennington

The Memory Stones is the second novel I have read and reviewed by this talented author and I am every bit as impressed with it as I was with the first, Rapture’s Rain. Please check out my review for that novel here. https://www.amazon.com/review/R1EIQKW...
Usually before I get into the gist of a review, I like to write a few words about the author. From my own experience as an author, I know that even in works of fiction oftentimes the writer pens a novel based on his or her own moral fiber. In this novel Pennington does just that…he shows his belief in forgiveness, his love of people and his optimism for the future. He takes his readers on an incredible journey along with his characters as he skillfully tells his tale of the memory stones.

The main character, Mase Winslow is the son of a plantation owner who is quite unique for the 1800’s in how he treats his slaves. With the death of his wife, Braxton relies on Maudie to help raise his two children, Mase and Annabelle. Braxton has taken in many orphaned black children and Sissy and Jeziah better known as Spoon, have become fast friends with Mase and his sister. As time goes by, Annabelle is brutally raped and Spoon is accused of this atrocity and so the story begins…

Maudie has been gifted with powers and five precious memory stones that she uses wisely by giving one to Mase as he joins the Confederate Army. They are only to be used in a time of dire emergency and as Mase faces death he is transported into the future where he has no recollection of his past as he takes on the persona of Paul Talbert. In pursuit of searching for his roots, he encounters Hanna and her beautiful daughter Elizabeth. As trust increases and Mase/Paul’s love grows for Elizabeth, the captivating mystery unfolds as they discover how their lives are so intimately intertwined.

I loved this intriguing novel from the first page until the last as the saga of forgiveness, love, and dealing with past and present events grabbed at my heartstrings. Can Mase change the future by returning to the past? Despite challenge after challenge he pursues his dream and makes every effort to alter the future…

I would like to thank Author Lewis Pennington for sharing his creative talents with his reading audience. I really enjoyed this book and I think many others will too!

Muse Winslow, the son of a big plantation owner is filled with rage, when he finds out what his best friend has done! How can he ever forgive himself for nearly killing his dearest friend? As a form of penance, he enlists in the army as the Civil War is raging. This amazing tale has it all: history, love story, adventure, time travel, suspense, everything a reader wants! It grabs the reader’s attention at the very beginning and does not relent. And it is beautifully and tenderly written by talented author, Lewis Pennington. The realistic characters take us through unforgettable and descriptive settings, weaving a valuable and poignant saga about love, forgiveness, loyalty, and honor. this became a page turner

At the start of this book, I wasn't at all crazy about it. Started very slow work lots of reference to pre civil war plantation life. Although it appeared very accurate, it wasn't the stuff I enjoy reading about. I'm glad I stick with it, though. Not very deep into the book, the story line became riveting! All my free time was devoted to see what was happening with the characters. Nicely done, the improbable becomes possible with an open mind and a love/belief in time travel. I teared up at the end and was really sad to see the book come to a close; only to find myself feeling happy about the experiences I just read about. Nice job. Well done.

It took me a while to get engaged in this book as I knew something dreadful was going to happen early on in the story. Once I got past that part of the story I coudn't put this book down. It was engaging and unpredictable. That it was unpredictable is what kept me engaged!! I'm a fan of historical fiction so I did enjoy that aspect of the book. I found myself in tears at the end and can't wait to read the sequel.

I'm not a big Civil War era fan, so it explains how the first part of the book was a little slow for me, but it was still well written and the mystical/supernatural elements kept me intrigued to get to present day in NYC. From that point on, I was quickly turning the pages with interest! I especially enjoyed the character development of Mase and Zoey, and I LOVED the ending!

Wow, I loved this story!

When I started reading the Memory Stones nearly put it down thinking it was going to be a story of the mistreatment of slaves in the South. I’m so happy that I kept reading. This is a story full of love and hope, forgiveness and determination to set things right, it’s a wonderful story. Plus there is a mystical quality that I loved.

Memory Stones

Really enjoyed the first part of the book. Really felt like i was there. Was a little thrown off when it went to the present time. It was hard for me to adjust to the new characters. Then the last part of the book, Wow, it all fell together and what a perfect ending. Loved it.

4.5 A beautifully written story of courage and love of friends and family. I really enjoyed this book. The time transitions at first did not make sense to me, until later in the book; but, so happy I continued reading. The author seamlessly pulls everything together in the end. I loved the ending.

Amazing, Other-Worldly, Remarkable!

I was drawn into this remarkable, and enchanting story. It crossed two centuries, many lives and then back again. The writers skill was such that I didn't feel lost as we time traveled back and forth. It is a story of forgiveness healing, history and faith. I will read more of this series and beyond to enjoy this authors talent.

I love this book! This is a fascinating tale of time travel adventure, but it’s mostly a story of love, love between brothers, sisters, mothers, and fathers - some related and others of no shared blood. It’s also a story of how forgiveness can change lives. Don’t miss this one.

Fresh Read

It was great to read a book with new twists and turns. Creative and a real attention holder. The beginning seems so benign until the story rips right open. The ending wraps up in time rather than a quick ...get it over with. Great sci to read!

I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

This is my first review in a year and a half! It has been a struggle to really read or get into anything with all that has happened in the world these last two years, but if there was a book to bring me back from it all, it just had to be this one!

The Memory Stones is a fantastic blend of historical fiction and fantasy. It follows Mase Winslow through an adventure of scandal, finding himself, love, and being the change he wanted to see in the world. Mase was the son of a local plantation owner in South Carolina. His best friend was named Spoons, a slave on the plantation. Now, I know what you are thinking. Today’s times are not the time to write a book involving slaves, and that was my fear reading the book, I wont lie….how would this be handled. I will give you this little spoiler, during Mase’s time in the “current” “present-day” time he spent in New York and South Carolina, he learns that the plantation he grew up on, was actually one of the stops on the underground railroad and that his father had very progressive beliefs compared to everyone else during the Civil War era time he lived in. Mase uses this knowledge, and the things he learns about the future, to take back with him when he makes it back in time to his own era.

I will let you be the judge of the content of the story, but it is a highly recommended read. I am anxiously awaiting the second book, because boy did that ending get me! The book is wonderfully written, with care being put into each character, each scene, and each chapter. Each character was well developed and had their own personal growth through the story that you got to enjoy along with them. I will tell you this though, normally, if an animal dies, I automatically knock a book back an entire star, because my poor animal loving heart just cannot take it. And while I was upset, when I really looked at the scene where a horse does die, there really isn’t any other way for that scene to have played out but for the horse to have died. So this is why, I left that star intact. I would never want such a heroic creature to suffer, and there was no way to write it back to health and life and keep the integrity of the story.

I really hope you decide to pick this book up and read it. It captures your attention from the very beginning, I am just sad that life got in the way and it took me so long to finish. I would think about it constantly because wherever I left off each time, was always in the most exciting of places. I can’t wait for the opportunity to continue reading Mase’s story.
