I do believe that 2018 is the year that will solidify me as a certified Historical Romance fanatic! I'm not normally a romancy-type reader, but the past few books I've read have really changed my mind. And The Promise of Tomorrow is one such book. The romance is handled so beautifully that you can't help but to be swept into it as the reader.

I can see why AnneMarie Brear's books get such amazing reviews (her Goodreads ratings are all above 4 stars) - her writing is wonderful, her characters are likable (or not, in the case of McBride), and there is enough drama and action to keep your attention. The story moves at a fast page and the pages fly fast as Charlotte fights for her happiness and Harry fights for his country.

Beautifully written and thoroughly enjoyable, The Promise of Tomorrow is an excellent historical read that I highly recommend! This is my first read by AnneMarie Brear but will most definitely not be my last. I am hooked!

The Promise of Tomorrow is a standalone book by AnneMarie Brear. I loved the synopsis of the story but never could have dreamt just how wonderful the book would be. It's one of the stories that I didn't want to put it down once I started it.

Charlotte Brookes takes her younger sister, Hannah, on the run after their guardian kept making lecherous advances towards her. After a year of living rough and always having to keep an eye out for her guardian, the girls go into a shop where they were hoping to be able to buy something to eat. Nearly starving, Charlotte ends up fainting and from that moment on life changed dramatically. The shopkeepers were a lovely couple who couldn't see Charlotte and Hannah go back to their rough life. They offered them a home and said that Hannah must go to school and that Charlotte could work in the shop.

It was in the shop that wealthy Harry Belmont first met Charlotte. He was instantly attracted to her, an attraction so strong that he couldn't understand it. He'd never felt like that before. When McBride, Charlotte's evil guardian comes back into her life determined to marry her and take her and Hannah home with him, Harry comes up with the obvious solution. McBride can't marry Hannah if she is already married. He offers to marry her and keep her and Hannah safe. He doesn't mention that he is falling in love with her, or that he wants nothing but to be able to hold her and kiss her and protect her. She never dreamt that she would ever have a loveless marriage, but the safety he offered was a godsend, plus deep down she realises that she could easily love Harry. She agrees to marry him.

Their relationship develops nicely and it isn't long before they realise that they are actually in love, that this definitely isn't a marriage of convenience. Life should be perfect. But it's not. Not only does McBride still keep showing up one way or another, showing his complete insanity and making sure Charlotte knew that he would never give up trying to get her back, but World War 1 began. Life was tough but got much worse once Harry decided he couldn't sit back and do nothing, that he had to buy a commission and fight in the war himself. How would Charlotte cope without him, would McBride keep away, and most importantly how could she cope worrying about Harry and wondering if he would come home to her.

I hate that I can't put into words adequately enough to explain just how much I enjoyed this book. There was so much going on all the time that it never had a dull moment. The author tells us how Harry is faring on the front, all very emotional stuff. She also tells us how Charlotte is coping without Harry at home and we had the perfect insight into what couples and families would have gone through in reality of those years. It was all very moving and I applaud the author for taking me deep into the story and enthralling me.

Charlotte and her younger sister Hannah have been on the road traveling and working. They stumble into a shop and the owners take them in. Life seems to settle and the girls seem to have found somewhere safe. But it is not long before the past starts to catch up to them in the form of McBride.

This is a fabulous story set before and during the First World War. It has some really good elements in it that kept the story moving along nicely as characters and stories were gradually introduced. I really like the way the author used the contrasts in social class, something that always interests me. It has a mix of stereotypical traits as well as some that go against the grain. As the war begins and men start to do their duty, things for those at home obviously change, people begin to adapt and do what they can. As is the way in all things there are always those who are eager to look for the easy route or the free ride.

The plot of the story weaves through the main characters and those they come into contact with, Charlotte is a strong and selfless character, always the one to do the best for others before herself. She was my favourite character in this story and while I did like quite a few others I will let you make your mind up about them when you read the book.

With the story being set partly during the WWI there are mentions of battles as well as conditions for those engaged in the fighting. The author did well to explain these aspects and also with the emotional aspects. She explored the strains for those back home and also those in the field of battle.

This is a story that is detailed and fast-paced, heartbreaking and hopeful. This is the first time I have read a book by this author and after reading this I look forward to reading more.

This is ideal for readers who like historical fiction and romance with a WW One setting and is also one I would definitely recommend.

Enjoyed This Immensely
The beginning, so raw with emotion, swept me right into the story. The battles were raw and heartrending, the villain a filthy creature. This story has all the elements for a good read, one that will remembered for a long time.

This is the first book I'm reading by AnneMarie Brear and I quite liked her writing style and the plot she gave us in this novel. And the fact that this book is set in a War World I setting (just prior to and during) is something that I liked because I haven't read that many books in this time period.

As you can read from the blurb this is about Charlotte and her sister, after they fled from their guardians, and they ended up in Yorkshire village after one year on the road. It's in this village that they met the Wheelers, owners of a store, and are taken in by them. It's while the sisters are in Yorkshire, living with the Wheelers that Harry Belmont and Charlotte meet.

So, this book talks about family, friends, loyalty and strength. Charlotte and Hannah ended up finding a family in the Wheelers and that shows that family isn't only related by blood, but the family we create and the people that are there for us and that love us just as much (sometimes more) than our blood relatives. And I loved that. The Wheelers are friends, but ended up as family too, and they want to help the sisters.

We also have Harry and Charlotte's relationship, one that keeps growing and that besides everything that stood in their way, their love kept growing. Which means we have romance in the book, which is a great aspect to balance the twists and turns that happened.

When I say this book is about strength I mean because of all the challenged that the sisters and Harry have to go through. Harry enlist and that meant his life would be in danger, just like all the other soldiers. And then there is Charlotte. She's our heroine, the main female character in this book, and she's an amazing character with a strong personality and determination, a strong woman from beginning to the end of the book.

It's because of her strength and loyalty personality, that I loved to see Harry and Charlotte together. Harry was a strong and loyal man, kind too, and they complimented each other and were very well suited together.

Overall this book had a good flow and I liked the characters because they felt real and there was an empathy, and I could connect with Charlotte, especially since as an older sister I would do everything to help and protect my brother. Plus, it's always amazing to see a strong woman as a main character in a book, it's empowering.

"The Promise of Tomorrow" is a book that I recommend. It's emotional, with drama and twists and turns, danger, love and friendship.

[I want to thank Rachel, at Rachel’s Random Resources, and AnneMarie for the eCopy of this book and for allowing me to join in the fun and by being a part of the blog tour with my honest review of the book.]

Wow, I get to help close the tour on this book! Phew! What a book! I will admit I don’t normally read anything to do with the war, don’t know why I just don’t, maybe because of the boy being in the army, not sure. But there was something about this book that I just had to pick it up. Plus I love the cover!

From the opening pages of my jaw dropping at the audacity of McBride, Charlotte and Hannah’s guardian, and his intentions, I was hooked! To me, and I know it was not like it, it reminded me of Downton Abbey, setting and time period, and that I loved! Ms Brear, you have converted me!

A love and heartbreak story told in the purest form. From the family who accepts to Charlotte and Hannah to the fear of the unknown Henry. I adored this book. Charlotte finds the strength and will to run away from their guardian with sister, leaving everything she knows behind, to then eventually be shown the good graces of the Wheelers and in the future Harry. However not without fear, as the dark cloud of McBride is a constant worry for the girls as we are reminded.

The writing was beautiful. I could imagine the bustles of the streets, the shops. I could feel the worries from the women as the men sign up. I could be there! I will not hesitate to pick up something that has been written by Ms Brear at all. I had all the emotions when reading this! Words can not convey how much I loved this book! I think Historical Fiction is the way to go!

While I’ll admit that the comparisons with Dilly Court and Rosie Goodwin on this book’s Amazon page rather passed me by – I’ve mentioned before that historical fiction isn’t a usual choice for me – I can certainly recognise when I’m in the presence of a writer at the top of her form and capable of some of the very best story-telling. I raced through this book, real life disappeared, and I was absorbed in the world the author created and the lives of its characters. It really is a cracking read – full of strong characters, well-rounded and beautifully drawn, detailed portrayals of people who became totally real to me as the story unfolded. And it’s quite a story – filled with tension, full of twists and turns that had me gripped as I read it in a single sitting.

The romantic side of the story is just beautifully handled – believable, heartfelt and touching. I really took the two main characters to my heart, as life threw everything at them, testing their love and deep reserves of courage and bravery. The book’s villain was particularly strongly drawn, the sense of threat and danger well developed and sustained. But there are strong characters everywhere in this story – the supporting cast, whether heroes or villains, individually detailed and fully rounded. The more stark and raw elements of the story are so well done – at war, at the mine, and in the domestic setting – and memorably described. And the overall historical setting was just right for me – brought to life, plainly well-researched, a feel of authenticity, and a strong sense of both time and place.

Apologies for a shorter review than usual – life intervened a little – but I really don’t think I need to say much more. And I really wouldn’t be telling you that much more about the story – this is one to discover for yourself, to read and enjoy, and you can certainly expect to be as impressed with the author’s writing as I was. I really enjoyed it.

Charlotte and Hannah Brookes lived a cherished and privileged life until they suddenly become orphans and have no choice but to move in with the man their father appointed their legal guardian in his will. Macbride is a greedy and lecherous man with designs on Charlotte, the elder sister. He secretly knows that Charlotte will come into a large inheritance and plans to make it his own.

The girls escape and spend weeks on the road, earning board and lodgings where they can. When Charlotte faints in a family run food store they are taken in by the husband and wife owners. The Wheelers are childless and take pity on the girls. They can tell that they come from good stock and are puzzled as to how they came to be walking the streets.

When Master Harry from Belmont Hall walks into the grocery shop he is blown away by the presence of Charlotte and immediately recognises that she is no ordinary shop girl. A relationship starts between them but there is news that guardian Macbride has found the girls whereabouts. Master Harry and the Wheelers form a plan to keep the sisters safe.

When war breaks out Charlotte has to find hidden strength. Harry has gone to fight and the family and villagers depend on her. Despite everything, Charlotte prays that one day Harry will return and Macbride will stop hunting her down.

I am a great fan of Anne-Marie Brears's writing and the storytelling in The Promise of Tomorrow certainly didn't disappoint. The pages flew by so quickly, and I became gripped by the lives of the sisters, Harry Belmont, and the wonderfully kind Stan Wheeler and his wife Bessie. Charlotte is a strong female character who rises to challenges and changes into a respected and assertive woman. There is a class divide, family conflict, imminent danger, and a beautiful love story.

A highly recommended historical romance.

What a gorgeous book by Australian author, AnneMarie Brear. Rich in emotion and history, The Promise of Tomorrow is about the beautiful and enduring love story of Charlotte and Harry. I adored their relationship, as well as the lives of the other characters, like the delightful Winston and Bertram. Petra was my favourite though, and Bessie and Stan were so sweet!
I found the pace of the writing excellent and it was always difficult to put down. I practically flew through it!
I am looking forward to picking up another book by this extremely talented author.

Charlotte and Hannah Brooks flee their guardian's home suddenly after McBride attempts to force himself upon Charlotte in hopes of her becoming his next wife and having control of the substantial fortune that she was left when her parent's died. Charlotte and Hannah have been on the road for a year before coming to a small mining town in Yorkshire. There, the sisters are taken in by shopkeepers Stan and Bessie Wheeler. Life begins to normalize once again for Charlotte and Hannah as Charlotte helps out around the shop and Hannah is enrolled in school. However, a chance run in with McBride brings danger back into their lives. No longer safe at the shop, Charlotte and Hannah are taken in by Harry Bellmont. Harry has silently adored Charlotte from afar. He is also quite lonely between managing his estate and the coal mine in town. Charlotte and Harry's romance develops quickly and helps to keep her shielded from McBride, although his threat still looms. With a War beginning, tensions rise as Harry joins up and Charlotte takes responsibility for the manor, Harry's unruly sister and the mine. Charlotte must now protect herself and her growing family while Harry is away.

The Promise of Tomorrow is a passionate historical romantic suspense. We are thrown directly into Charlotte's nightmare as she is escaping McBride and thrown to the mercies of the open road. The pace did slow down once the sisters found the Wheeler's shop, from there it seemed like every man in town was simply after Charlotte for her novelty and looks and not much else. I actually did not like how Charlotte and Harry first came together, it seemed very forced; however, once the two got their feelings out, the romance felt better. The pace as well as my interest picked up again as the war began. With both Harry and Charlotte's perspective of the war, I could feel the emotions and struggles from each side as Harry took pride in his unit, the teamwork and leading the effort with the men from his town for the war while Charlotte took on every responsibility she could in order to keep her mind off of the danger Harry was in as well as keep the town running. With the war, I could see the depth of the love Charlotte and Harry held for one another. The suspense rose with McBrides's threats continued throughout the war and Harry's unit was endangered. Written with engaging characters, history, suspense and sweet romance, The Promise of Tomorrow is a sweeping tale of World War I.

I absolutely loved this WWI based novel! The Promise of Tomorrow has such an edge of your seat plot, wonderful cast of characters and identifiable setting that kept me racing through the pages. It shines with AnneMarie's excellent story telling ability. I enjoyed and cheered for Charlotte, a determined leading lady whose strength is absolutely remarkable. Everything and everyone revolves around her actions and reactions. It was such a lively read, when I came to the end of the novel, I was stunned how time passed so quickly. I was lost in it all--including the heartbreak and triumph. I must add, the story is completely wrapped up perfectly. So it has a very satisfying ending for the reader.

The Promise of Tomorrow is filled with dramas that surround war themes, the concerns women had when their husbands went off to fight and when they returned, plus the challenges of bullies, rebellious siblings and personality conflicts in family. But through it all, we see how love reigns, love heals and love delivers positive results.

Character arcs blossom from innocence to experience to maturity, except the true villains who remain fixed on their revenge. This story covers it all but its heart beats with a real passion for life, love and freedom. A must read! It is a beautiful story that took my breath away! 5 Golden Stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book is excellent and I really enjoyed it!!

The story line is very good and it has a great flow. The plot is full of emotion and I was completely immersed in the story. The author’s writing style really suits this genre and this book is executed very, very well.

I loved everything from the stylish front cover to the ending. I really enjoyed the characters, they are well developed and I thought Charlotte was a brilliant character, I warmed to her straight away.

Five stars from me, a very good story, well written and one I am very highly recommending!

2 sisters become orphans. Charlotte and Hannah whose mother was the last to die in their family. But they are in danger of becoming wards of a man appointed as their guardian because he wants their money and also wants to marry Charlotte! Charlotte is violently opposed and with Hannah they sneak out into the night to escape that fate. They are rescued by Harry Belmont and go to live in his very large house. This novel is well written and easy to follow. Taking place just before the start of World War I and in England for the most part. There is a lovely romance in the story, also.

Interesting, clean romance , coupled with mild tension!

Lovely to read about two people in love without the bombardment of sexually explicit details ( I find all that nonsense unnecessary and tiresome). The reader follows the dynamic relationship between two individuals--a deepening bond overshadowed by a selfish sister, war, and most of all, circumstances caused by a greedy, relentless relative. Like all good stories, this one ends happily, but not without a series of bump along the way, which kept me engaged start to finish!

I absolutely loved “The Slum Angel” by AnneMarie Brear and this book is very, very close to the quality and enjoyment of the aforementioned novel.

I started “The Promise of Tomorrow” last night and finished this afternoon. It’s a great read, very enjoyable. The main characters are very lovable and I was just rooting for them from the start. Despite the horrors that Harry is going through during WWI, the book is something for the heart. It’s a great read in between more ‘serious’ books. Fantastic escapism during a rainy Sunday.

Definitely recommend this book.

Brilliant!

In this book the reader firstly developed a love for all the main and secondary characters then as the story evolved lived through the pain of separation that happens during war, we enjoyed happy reunions, distraught departures and even threats to loved ones left behind. All culmination in the happiest of reunions for those who survived tinged by the pain of losing those that didn’t live. A brilliant book that is highly recommend to others.

Well-written

This story captured my interest from the start with the plight of a young woman fleeing a bad situation with younger sister in tow. The characters were well-written. The author included a healthy dose of action and conflict through the story, and the romantic tension was handled well. Enjoyed this romance very much.

Okay!

It was not as good as I expected, it seems that the character Charlotte changed her character, which wasn't true to the story. Rather disappointed!
