Revenge in another world--with an abnormal twist! (And don't miss the manga version, also from Seven Seas.)
Mimori Touka and his classmates are abruptly catapulted into a fantasy world, summoned by the world's resident goddess to serve as heroes. The good news? Most of the students display amazing skills upon arrival! The bad? Mimori is the worst of the lot, bottoming out at a measly E-rank. Incensed, the goddess tosses him in a dungeon to die--but, it turns out, Mimori's skills aren't so much worthless as they are abnormal. Abnormally powerful, perhaps!
This volume does not have much action. The pace is slow. The author plays and writes about both sides of everything making it rather tedious to read. There is a pronounced interest by the author to portray emotional and physical violence. As if the author enjoys that his made up characters are victims to emotional and physical violence. Rape and sexual assault threats and innuendos are again seen in this Volume 3. It is a crime to promote rape and sexual assault to minors (people who are not yet adults). According to US, Canadian and Japanese law, it is a crime to promote sexual crimes, rape, etc. to minors, and it is much worse if this author and this publisher is promoting those specific crimes to minors (young people who are not yet adults). Revenge is not a good motivation. It would have been better if the author would place the main character's desire to be the strongest in this alternate reality world. A need to create a team to help him that was capable, strong and loyal. Main character was physically and emotionally abused by his mother and father. Bullied by his school mates and sentenced to death by the goddess that sent all of these students to this alternate world. Author is betting that this hate, this revenge is strong enough to be the main plot arc of this light novel, that is a bad copy of Arifureta and Shield Hero Light novels even though all of them are copyrighted, patented and trademarked. For the second time this author has made a character in this alternate world say "Checkmate". Does this author really think that a board game that exists on Earth exclusively, and a move to win in that game will be understood by extra terrestrials? Extremely naïve, lack of vision, irrational and nonsensical.
Well, this is probably my stopping point for this series. It's still ok, but the shallowness of the characters becomes more apparent with each book. Then all of the extras are basically Random Mercenary/Would-Be Rapist #43, so there's not even really much variety.
If this was available on KU then I might keep going for a couple more books, but these are $8.99 each which is just a bit too expensive for what it's providing imo. That's the unfortunate reality when trying to read foreign books since the translators need to get paid too.
They really pressure lite novels to stay around 250 pages as well, so the cost per page is moderately high and the story pacing is usually slow, resulting in dozens of books for a series. Not bad if money isn't a factor for you, but it's a bit hard for me to justify when I know I can get more bang for my buck elsewhere.
The story keeps moving at a good pace. Two new characters are introduced and Seras’s character gets developed more in this volume. The characters are likable and the MC gives light to more of his past traumas, although the same problem as with previous volumes continues with human enemies and antagonist, at the end the lack personality and motivations. Hopefully in next volumes the author will improve this.
Really want to know what's going to happen! Keep up the nice work :)
But yeah it feels like this should have continued some more (50 more pages worth maybe). I don't want to spoil so I will abstain more comments. Enjoy your read! If you liked 1 and 2 you will love 3.
Here you go, the story begun to circling around, no more level up in this volume 😅 Well, this kind of story always good in the beginning and became filler in the middle. Hope the next volume could make our excitement back.
Not much of substance happens in this one as it is basically a detour so the MCs can acquire a guide to find the Forbidden Witch, who he needs for the next step in his revenge plan. It was fine overall.
I have to question whether it's a translation issue or a case of the author making the mistake of changing between 1st POV and 3rd POV within sentences of each other. It's driving me crazy. Also I don't get why sometimes the character has his name spelled Too-ka and other times Touka. >>_<<
I don't care for the expansion of the cast, but the politics of this world are exactly what I expected. They're delightfully bare-knuckled and no-holds-barred. What else can you expect when the strongest are sociopathic violent children? I almost feel bad for Vicius. Almost.
