A tongue-in-cheek jaunt through romance, giant robots, and dating sim jokes! (And don't miss the original light novels, also from Seven Seas.)

Office worker Leon is reincarnated into a dating sim video game, where women reign supreme and only beautiful men have a seat at the table. But Leon has a secret weapon: he remembers everything from his past life, which includes a complete playthrough of the very game in which he is now trapped. Can Leon spark a revolution to change this new world order?

This is where this title peaks. The 1 versus 5 duel where the main character take on the main capture targets he learned to hate with a passion from playing the otome game he is now trapped in. The main character relishes and revels in the duel and just exudes all that hater energy.

The heroine of this otome game world, Marie, is utterly screwing up the timeline and throwing Leon’s plans to survive out of whack. When Marie’s insinuations threaten to utterly ruin the life of Angelica, the game’s de facto rival and the prince’s fiancé, Leon can’t stand back, but can a mere baron take down five romance options in a single fight?

What can make an isekai interesting? While my first response is a snarky ‘not much’, I have to admit that this book is doing it for me. In fact, of the isekai I’ve endured, this one is easily the second best, sitting just below I’m in Love With the Villainess, which is on top because it is super gay, not due to its genre trappings.

At least that’s my thought for this volume, which takes the basics established last time and has an absolute field day with them. To start with, we begin to veer off the near-misogyny of the powerful matriarchy by making the noble boys just as bad.

The arrogant little snots are utterly beguiled by Marie’s overachieving scheming and begin tearing down Angelica, the story’s ice queen. They’re a real bunch of twerps and it gives the story some real juice as it’s super, super easy to want to see them get their comeuppance.

And it makes Leon look better, not that he’s particularly awful, just by how he’s so done with this place and its stupid rules. It says a lot that his happy ending is right there in Olivia (and given her less than enthused response to Angelica, Olivia wouldn’t mind), but he still feels he should do the right thing to help somebody being bullied.

Then there’s Marie, who, as I suspected from the first volume, is actually the reincarnation of Leon’s sister from back in Japan. She’s of the type to blame everybody but herself for her problems (it’s admittedly a gray area on how much of Leon’s death was his own fault) and pretty much feels she deserves every love interest in the game.

So the story really makes her into a piece of work, as she’s getting the reverse harem route going well ahead of schedule and enjoying all the benefits that might offer to her. It’s a great idea because it makes her villainy at least come from someplace and gives her a motivation.

Meanwhile, Angelica (the Irony in Naming Division strikes again!) gets a taste of what the bullied feel, though she seems half bully and half trying to explain how incredibly suckered the boys are by Marie’s charm. It’s not exactly Chaucer, but it gets the job done and I was impressed how far it went showing Angelica’s distress and Marie’s utter lack of morality.

And did I mention this is also funny as hell? Because it is; this book has a darkly comic streak that I am absolutely here for. Between the vicious back and forth between Leon and Loxion, the massive space ship at his command, to all the dialogue during the duel, this book doesn’t miss a trick.

The duel is just a non-stop tour-de-force, starting from Loxion naming Leon’s mech Arroganz to reflect its owner, through Leon piloting the world’s equivalent of a jalopy, right on to his choice of weapon (an oddly common theme in isekai).

As the battle progresses it becomes clear that Leon is working through a lot of his frustrations over how useless these characters could be during the game’s battles, even as he is using his overpowered mech and foreknowledge to wreck things.

There is a lot of throwing down over how much these nobles think they’re so much better by birthright and this smackdown is so satisfying as a result. Leon gets asked a specifically trite question designed to play on his better nature and his brutal response is absolutely perfect.

No, if you don’t care for isekai tropes, I doubt this will change your mind. Your mileage may also vary at how much you can stand Leon, who is having a blast while grandstanding, but is ultimately trying to do the right thing. Neither turned out to be dealbreakers for me - I might even really like the grandstanding.

4 stars - a marked improvement over volume one and while it may never be this good again I savoured what we did get here. If I could only have one isekai, well, it wouldn’t be this one like I said. But if I could have two? I think this would currently get the nod.

(Also, huge props to an isekai that can tell a story without turning completely to fan service to keep people invested [so far] - the little ‘Nyah Nyah’s at the end of each volume bring me joy.)

Small differences to anime

I feel like the manga is progressing quite quickly, in comparison to the anime. I haven't read the light novels yet so I can't compare to those. So if you're familiar with the anime this volume lines up with the duels but it doesn't complete the duels. It leaves off before the finishing blows. So the next one will start up with completing the duels as I recall the anime going.

While the internal rules of the world are still flouted, this volume was at least a lot more entertaining than the last. The Mecha fight(s) being the highlight of this book. I'll give it at least one more before I go/no-go on the series as a whole.

I'm not usually a fan of mech's in manga/anime but this one isn't too bad so far. The actual plot has been really interesting so far as well! Some twist that I was quite intrueged about!
