[ 3.5★ ] I don't really know how the volumes are divided, but I finished the entire main story and honestly, I'm obsessed, but also very conflicted.
The concept itself is genuinely good. The idea of golden butterflies, different dimensions, and the connection between worlds wasn't just filler but actually drives the story and the characters forward. It had so much potential, and there were moments where it really delivered. But at the same time, the plot started to feel repetitive. Reading some of the parts felt like they were being recycled over and over again to the point that reading became more of a chore than an experience. It's frustrating because you can clearly see how strong the story could've been if it were more concise.
That said, I can't deny that the ending elevated the whole novel for me. I was ready to give it around 3 stars, but the final parts made it land closer to a 3.5 rating. There's something about how everything escalated emotionally that just worked for me. Sethian was really crazy, and he was dashing!
And of course, my favorite, Joo Yi-Gyeol and Sethian. I'm literally so obsessed! They are, without a doubt, the strongest part of the story.
At first glance, Yi-Gyeol seems like the weak one, especially because of his condition. But the more the story progresses, the more you realize he's just as unhinged as Sethian. They're literally a freak for freak couple! Their love isn't pure or selfless in the traditional sense. It's selfish, intentional, and chosen. And being in love, choosing to love someone and choosing to stay by their side is selfish, which basically confirmed by how graciously selfish Yi-Gyeol's wish to be with Sethian and by how maddeningly crazy Sethian's wish to shackle Yi-Gyeol by his side.
Meanwhile, Sethian's love is territorial and terrifying. I was thinking Sethian should've been crazier, freakier, and creepier but I was glad that he really did become crazier, especially starting from when he was willing to torture and kill people just so Yi-Gyeol would come back. That shift into full obsession was honestly one of the most satisfying parts of the novel.
Anyway, I'm giggling and blushing at the fact that Sethian shackles Yi-Gyeol and Yi-Gyeol is the one who locks it himself. It's mutual obsession and mutual surrender! Also! Sethian would've loved the ABO world, I believe he would do anything if he found out there's another dimension or world like that. He would literally do anything for Yi-Gyeol! I just love crazy tops and their bottoms who is willing to be destroyed and trapped!
Also, Zair deserves a mention. I quite liked his character, it was so sad his strongest wish is also his greatest despair.
This book is not a perfect read, but it's definitely memorable, carried heavily by the main couple, whose relationship is intense, disturbing, and weirdly beautiful. Insane and romantic, just like my type.
I loved the cover but the story didn’t quite live up to it. While I liked the ML’s yandere traits, the plot felt just okay, and the angst didn’t hit as hard as it could have. Honestly, this might have worked better as a manhwa.
This is not for weak hearts. It's sad and goes over sensitive topics. However, this story is so fascinating. I loved the idea and structure the author went with. I hope it will get an official English release.
Fairy Trap is a severally underrated novel. Not only is the cover art magnificent, but the content inside is equally as eye-catching.
If you like stories with darker romance and heavy topics, this is a good one.
