When a local teacher is found dead, LA's newest pet groomer Mimi Lee finds herself in a pawful predicament--with her younger sister's livelihood on the line.
Mimi Lee is on top of the world. She has a thriving pet grooming business, the sweetest boyfriend, and a talking cat to boot. When she arrives at the elementary school where her sister Alice works, she's expecting a fun girls' night out--but instead finds a teacher slumped over in her car, dead.
Alice was the last one to see Helen Reed, which instantly marks her as the prime suspect. Unable to sit quietly and let the authorities walk all over her sister, Mimi starts snooping and talks to Helen's closest contacts, including one jumpy principal, a two-faced fianc, and three sketchy teachers. With the help of her sassy but savvy cat, Marshmallow, and a cute kitten named Nimbus, the clock's ticking for Mimi to get to the bottom of yet another case before her sister gets schooled.

It was pure delight following alongside Mimi, Marshmallow, and new kitten friend Nimbus on this wild goose chase! I didn't have a clue who the culprit was, and it was wonderful getting to know Mimi's family a bit better and become privy to some of their family history along the way. My only concern is that I keep feeling that Mimi's boyfriend, Josh, is a bit of a bland character, although a truly sweet and kind addition to the line up. If you enjoyed Mimi Lee Gets a Clue, you're going to love this latest installment in the series. I can't wait to see where the author takes us next! (Also, I can't be the only one who seems to think the detective might make a perfect love interest down the road?)
*Many thanks to the publisher for providing my review copy.
I often comment on the fact that most 21st century mystery writers (or their publisher's marketing dept) evidently think mystery readers only want cats, witches, dogs, recipes, and new beginnings in a small town. So get ready for a shocker!
I was visiting my local library and saw this on the new books shelf. I hadn't read a print library book since Feb 2020 for obvious reasons but this one enticed me and I checked it out! Yay! Anyway I started reading it skeptically. What was the SASSY cat going to do? Well, he wasn't magical and where he learned how to communicate with our heroine Mimi introduces a whole new mystery. But I like Mimi. I didn't dislike her cat and the mystery was inventive with many quirky and very unexpected characters.
Also how often is a grade school the scene of a murder and teachers under suspicion? (The question comes: Did Jennifer distrust her elementary school teachers? Or was she just being unique? '-) And I like the sweet romance between Mimi and Josh. Awwww....
Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines by Jennifer J. Chow is the 2nd book in A Sassy Cat Mystery series. I recommend reading Mimi Lee Gets a Clue before embarking on the newest addition. I did not and I was lost in the beginning. Mimi Lee owns Hollywoof, a pampered pooch palace in Los Angeles, California. She owns a cat that communicates with her telepathically named Marshmallow. Mimi is close to her teacher sister, Alice. Her father always seems to be busy with golf while her mother spends her time trying to marry off her daughters. When Helen Reed, a teacher at Alice’s elementary school, is murdered, Detective Brown puts Alice at the top of his suspect list. Mimi is not about to let her sister linger on the suspect list when she can do a little snooping with the aid of Marshmallow. The whodunit had several suspects, a red herring, and subtle clues. I like how Mimi and Marshmallow work together to solve crimes. That Marshmallow is one smart cookie. The mystery can be solved before the reveal if you pay careful attention to the clues. When not at her pet salon, she spends time with her boyfriend, Josh. They get to enjoy Valentine’s Day together. Mimi and Alice are worried about her parent’s marriage. They decide to plan a little something to help them. Alice finds a small kitten outside her classroom that Mimi takes into her home. She calls the little ball of fluff Nimbus who has something in common with Marshmallow. Mimi will need to come up with a plan to keep Nimbus safe. As you can see, Mimi is one busy woman. She certainly gets some unusual requests at Hollywoof. They provided humor in the story. We also get to learn about the Lee family mixed culture and the food they enjoy (lots of yummy food descriptions). I enjoyed the Harry Potter references and loved the nook under the stairs in Helen’s home. Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines is a lighthearted cozy mystery with a cute kitten, a matchmaking mama, fun foreign fare, parent problems, a setup sister, one panicky principal. And a cheeky cat.
Sassy cat Marshmallow and Mimi Lee are back and investigating another murder. A visit to see her sister and the elementary school where she teaches takes a deadly turn when they find another teacher dead in her car. The police believe Mimi’s sister Alice was the last to see the deceased alive and place her at the top of their suspect list. Mimi knows her sister is innocent and quickly sees several other suspects. With a little help from her feline friend, she is going to put her sleuthing to the test and catch the real killer.
Mimi Lee continues to grow in this second Sassy Cat Mystery. She has a boyfriend, Josh, her pet grooming shop, Hollywoof is gaining new clients, some with some unusual requests, and her investigating has gone up a notch too. I love the relationship she has with her sister, Alice. I enjoyed getting to know Alice better. There is something going on with their parents that has them both worried. They take a page out of their mother’s handbook and do a little meddling of their own. The author has done a great job with character development, human and feline. Marshmallow again stole my heart.
The mystery was a fun one with Marshmallow and Mimi ferreting through the clues. Their telepathic relationship is unique. It would be such a treat to actually know what our cats are thinking, heck this cat can even read text messages. They worked through school politics and a clique of teachers as they pared-down the suspects. Frankly, setting the murder aside, it was nice to escape the reality of COVID and read about a school that was actually in session, teaching students.
The regular life subplots blended nicely and added so much to the book. A wonderful twist had me smiling ear to ear.
Mimi Lee Reads Between The Lines is a delightful lighthearted mystery with a sassy, smart kitty and his amateur sleuth person. All in all, a very enjoyable escape.
What a delightful new series this is! I plan to catch up by reading the first in this Sassy Cat series. The author has skillfully woven in sufficient backstory on characters so this can be read as a standalone. Some characters are defined through observations of others, and some are seen through their conversations and actions. While the setting overall is the LA area, the area where Mimi, her family and friends live is like a small-town atmosphere. The mystery kept me on my toes, but whodunit was not someone I would have seriously considered.
Mimi is a busy young woman who helped solve one murder mystery in the past. Thanks to an investor, she is the proud owner of Hollywoof, a salon for pets. She continues to learn new techniques and services from her veterinarian and from YouTube videos, such as clipping a bird’s feathers or dying a pet to look like a zebra. Mimi’s sister Alice got her a somewhat plump white Persian cat at a local rescue shelter. Mimi named the puffy white cat Marshmallow, and he loves to go to the salon with her.
One day after work, Mimi went to the school where Alice teaches. On the way out to the car, they saw a young woman in a car near Alice’s. It was Helen, a teacher, and she looked to be unconscious. Upon looking taking a closer look, they discovered she was dead.
Detective Brown, Mimi’s nemesis from an investigation a few months earlier, showed up at Alice’s the next day. While the autopsy results had not yet been received, the detective was questioning everyone who was at school the prior afternoon. When the results were in, he suspected Alice, as she was the last to see Helen and nobody else was in the school except the principal, with whom Mimi was chatting. Alice had motive, as she had been threatened with a layoff several months earlier, even though Helen was the newest teacher on staff.
There is a little one who misses Helen terribly – a stray kitten with dirty and matted fur that she had been feeding. This was a job for Mimi, who transformed the kitten into an adorable little girl named Nimbus. And Nimbus seems to have a similar talent to Marshmallow. She and Marshmallow have a special means of communication, and he finds they share a secret about their past. A secret that could soon come back to haunt them.
Alice’s principal asks her to take time off from school until things are settled regarding Helen’s death. Mimi has to act fast to find whodunit so Alice’s life can get back to normal. She begins to do what she did once before, asking questions of those who knew Helen best, including her roommate and her fiancé. There are a handful of possible suspects…but I never guessed who-really-dunit! This was a fun, surprising read, and I especially enjoyed the cats. I am excited about Nimbus going to her new home and looking forward to hearing more about her in the future! I recommend this to anyone who enjoys learning about the Malaysian culture, cats, and cozy mysteries with engaging young folks!
From a thankful heart: I received a complimentary copy of this novel; a review was not required.
Mimi Lee Reads Between The Lines is the second in the Sassy Cat Mystery series by Jennifer Chow. In this one we spend even more time with Mimi's family including her sister Alice who falls under suspicion when a fellow teacher is found dead in her car. It's up to Mimi and Marshmallow to solve the murder.
This is a very quick, fun read. Marshmallow the talking cat is hilarious. I love the author's sense of humor because she allows Mimi to get in embarrassing situations, nothing big just things that could happen to anyone.
Mimi is nosy and makes mistakes but she is a great sister and daughter. There is a secondary mystery going on with her parents this time around. I guessed what was going on.
The mystery is entertaining and satisfying with plenty of people acting suspiciously. I also really enjoyed the grooming jobs Mimi has to take on. It was a very cozy, charming read, perfect for curling up with something warm and fuzzy.
As a lover of cozy mysteries, this book shouted at me to be picked up! I think it was the cat called Marshmallow that swung it for me. Mimi Lee has a pet grooming business, Hollywoof, a veritable hounds haven based in Los Angeles, California.
Although I have not yet read Mimi Lee Gets a Clue, the first in the Sassy Cat Mystery series, I was not lost off with characters and events in this one, Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines and it was a good individual read. Mimi has a sister, Alice, who teaches at an elementary school and they arrange to meet up together for a night out. When Helen Reed, a teacher at the same school where Alice works is found dead, Alice finds herself at the top of the suspect list...
Busy Mimi sets out to clear Alice's name working alongside the rather uptight Detective Brown, though she still manages to spend some time with her boyfriend, Josh. With several suspects and a few clues and red herrings, the mystery itself was very good as I tried to figure out the perpetrator and motive. However, for me, it was Marshallow, Mimi's telepathic cat, that stole the show. Jennifer J. Chow's writing style really appealed to me and especially liked the funnies relating to Mimi's unusual requests at Hollywoof. I found Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines to be a cracking, fun and lighthearted cozy mystery and I will be looking out for book three, as well as catching up with the first in the Sassy Cat Mystery series.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Great Escapes Book Tours, via Berkley and NetGalley, at my request and this review is my unbiased opinion.
This was the second installment in the Sassy Cat Mystery series and it was alright. I liked the first book better than this one, but it was still nice to listen on my drive. I would definitely categorized this as a cozy mystery and one reason it didn't get three stars was the figurative language used throughout. I get that it's a small town, but the way the author wrote similes and metaphors read really strange and I didn't care for it. NO one talks how the characters do in real life- literally no one- so I gave this two stars. Another thing I didn't like too much was the ending. It was all wrapped up nicely which I appreciate but it was boring. The culprit was caught and that's it. Of course I understand the need to end the novel after the murderer is caught but the events that happened afterwards felt forced and unnecessary. For example, the vow renewal ceremony was cute, but Mimi's actions and thoughts got in the way of the beautiful and symbolic ceremony. Overall the mystery was alright and the twist with Mimi's parents I saw coming (predicted very early onto and was completely right!).
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I checked this out from the library because I enjoyed the few cozy mysteries I read over the last year or two and thought "maybe I'm a cozy guy" but it turns out I draw the line at talking cats
I was so excited to receive an advanced copy of the second book in the Sassy Cat mystery series. I loved the first one, and since I have been reading a lot of heavy material, I definitely needed an escape. In this entry, Mimi investigates the death of a teacher at the school where her sister Alice teaches. The previous book had her setting up her new pet grooming business, Hollywoof, and Mimi is definitely busy with that now - but for this story, she's spending all her spare time snooping around the school. Oh, and trying to figure out what's going on between her parents, who seem to be experiencing some kind of rift. Mimi also has a sweet relationship with her boyfriend, Josh, and I love that they are a fun and happy couple. My favorite part of these mysteries is that things that happen in everyday life spark connections for Mimi in the story. She is a logical, organized thinker - my favorite kind of sleuth! A definite comfort read!
This is really a 3.5. It's not up there with the fours, but I will read another. My favorite thing this time around is that the book begins to address the question of how Marshmallow is able to communicate, but I feel this is getting into spoiler territory so I will refrain. I will say that this book also introduces an ongoing story arc beyond the immediate mystery. The resolution was a surprise and while I didn't feel enough groundwork had been laid for a classic mystery, I didn't feel cheated, if you know what I mean. I'll be reading the next one.
When a teacher is found dead at Alice's, Mimi's sister, school it looks like a tragic accident. Soon it's clear that she was murdered and Alice comes under suspicion. That's when Mimi, and her detecting cat, Marshmallow decide they have to find the real killer and clear Alice's name. Add in an adorable kitten and trouble at home and you get a fun and engaging mystery.
It was so very cute! An elementary read but it was fate to be the first book I picked up in a thrift store. Loved hearing what a fictional Nimbus and Marshmallow got up to and thought about all day during a murder investigation!
This time there are two cats but only one stays. I enjoyed the secondary mystery involving them. The main mystery was equally enjoyable. That one involved a murdered teacher, a vision impaired janitor, a surfer fiancé, a desperate father, and a hugger for a principal. I liked the turns the story took, and I was surprised by the ending.
Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines by Jennifer J. Chow is the second book in the Sassy Cat mystery series. Mimi goes to pick up Alice at the elementary school where she works expecting a fun night together but those plans are put on hold when they find another teacher dead in her car. Alice is now a person of interest and Mimi decides she, with the help of her cat, will clear her sister's name.
This book continues with the talking cat plot first introduced in Mimi Lee Gets a Clue. In the first volume, Marshmallow's ability to talk isn't explained beyond it being part of their bond as pet and owner. Now with the introduction of Nimbus, a gray kitten with the same ability, albeit to a lesser degree, Chow includes a secondary plot thread to explain why and how.
3.5 round up. Enjoyed it quite a bit! Good cozy mystery. The mystery was better, but truly Helen sounded great and I'm legit sad she died. The little kitten was a fun add!
I was really intrigued by the premise of a protagonist who solves crimes with the help of her cat, who speaks to her via telepathy. This book is very much a Hallmark movie but on the page, with a splash of mystery. But the mystery isn't too heavy or dark. Chow really leans in to the cat puns and over the top cat behavior. Marshmallow gets tucked in at night. As a person who is a cat caretaker and gets bossed daily by said cat, all of this really made me laugh. The subtitle on this book is "Sassy Cat Mystery" and it lived up to that. There is a bit of a romantic arc, but it is very light. And that was fine. I think any one who likes cats, likes Hallmark movies, likes a smidge of silliness, and isn't looking for anything too hard/heavy would enjoy this book.
I will be looking forward to seeing what capers Mimi and Marshmallow get in to next.

Review:
I enjoyed this lighthearted cozy mystery, second in the Sassy Cat Mystery series. The fascinating mystery had me stymied, the characters are well-defined, and I appreciated how close-knit Mimi and her family is. The cats are not the typical pets one would find on the street or at the local shelter. There is sufficient backstory on Mimi’s family and her cat, Marshmallow, to allow for reading this as a standalone. Be prepared, though, as you might want to read the first one!
Mimi and her cat, Marshmallow, live in an apartment in the Los Angeles area near her parents’ home. She is very close to her younger sister, Alice, a kindergarten teacher. Mimi owns Hollywoof, a pet grooming salon where we see clients who want anything from a conditioner-only bath to a blueberry facial to non-toxic dye changing the color of a pet. She loves what she does, even if some of the requests are unusual.
As is her cat, Marshmallow, who came from a rescue shelter. She had the kitty only a short time before she realized he seemed to understand what she said – and the cat communicated back with her! Marshmallow could be a great secret agent as who would guess a cat could communicate with a human?
One day Mimi met Alice at her school so the sisters could get together. Mimi met Principal Lewis, an older man who liked to greet everyone with a hug, while awaiting Alice. When the sisters walked through the parking lot minutes later, Mimi thought she saw gray fluff go by a car. She didn’t locate the source of the fluff but noticed that someone was inside the car with their head hanging at an odd angle. Helen, one of the teachers who Alice had tried to befriend, was dead inside her car, and the EMT’s could not bring her back.
The next morning, Detective Brown was at Alice’s door with questions. Mimi got there as quickly as she could, since he had caused her much grief a few months ago when she was a murder suspect. He wouldn’t commit to whether the police considered Helen’s death suspicious, only that he has to ask questions should the autopsy show anything unusual. Unfortunately for Alice, the results did show something unusual, and from the questions he asked around the school, she had motive and access to the means.
Before Principal Lewis sent Alice home on leave, she sent an emergency pet request to Mimi. She hurried to the school to find that Alice had an adorable, but matted and bedraggled gray kitten who needed a home. It had been a stray around the schoolyard that Helen had been feeding. Mimi took the kitten home, cleaned her up, and named her Nimbus, after the clouds she resembled. Nimbus has quite a surprise for Mimi and Marshmallow.
Detective Brown strongly suggested that Mimi stay out of the investigation, but when it comes to her younger sister, she will do whatever is necessary to protect Alice. Where Mimi goes, Marshmallow has to go unless it interrupts his napping or mealtime, and the pair make a good, if interesting, team.
The characters are well defined; it was interesting to learn about Mimi’s mother’s background and how her parents had met, as well as some of the different customs and foods of Malaysia. Detective Brown shows a side of himself that few people see, or at least few suspects would see, and I was happy with a decision he made by the end of the story. Josh, Mimi’s boyfriend and an attorney, is originally from Hawaii. He, and other characters are defined as needed for their roles.
Overall, this was a fun and surprising read. I enjoyed the pets and the pet grooming escapades. I’m not sure that I connected with any of the characters other than Mimi, Alice, and Marshmallow. While the premise of communicating with cats is not uncommon in cozy mysteries, this time there is a twist for Marshmallow’s talent. It will be interesting to see how Mimi might one day tell her family or Josh about it! The means of murder and the mystery held my attention throughout, especially as Mimi tries to track down the source of the cause of death. I was surprised to find out the motive and the identity of the killer and appreciate how Mimi put it all together. I highly recommend this cozy mystery!
Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines is the second book in the Sassy Cat cozy mystery series by Jennifer J. Chow. Released 10th Nov 2020 by Penguin Random House on their Berkley imprint, it's 320 pages and available in paperback, library large print, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.
This is an entertainingly fluffy cozy murder mystery with a strong romance subplot. The writing is light and engaging and the character driven plot is breezy and whimsical. For readers who enjoy anthropomorphic cats (is there a proper subgenre for that?) this series has them in spades. Pet groomer, Mimi Lee, owner of Hollywoof, spends part of her days grooming pets and a fair bit of time solving unpleasant murders with her genetically enhanced telepathic cat Marshmallow riding shotgun. He's got a sarcastic, wisecracking, old-guy schtick going on which some readers will enjoy (and some will not). He speaks to Mimi telepathically, but she speaks to him audibly, which leads to some inevitable "who are you talking to" scenes in the book. The significant plot threads concerning Marshmallow and the mad scientist/shady project responsible for her augmented cat (and his kitten sidekick) take up roughly half the book. Since it's a series, the unfolding information about how her psychic cat (and kitten Nimbus) came to be, provide continuity from book to book. Although it's a series, it works well enough as a standalone read. The author is adept at providing the necessary backstory without info dumping to an annoying degree.
The mystery itself is outlandish and unnecessarily convoluted, but readers who enjoy talking cats (including me) won't find it impossible to read and enjoy. The denouement was maybe a bit telegraphed and oddly resolved, but all in all, satisfying. I would recommend it to readers who enjoy the subgenre. The language is clean and there's no scandalous or disturbing content. My only annoyance came from a minor plot element which could've been resolved a *lot* more easily and cleanly by the simple expedient of a direct question to the main character's father. (My eyes were rolling).
Four stars, will probably delight talking-cat-cozy-mystery fans.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines, the second book in Jennifer J. Chow’s Sassy Cat mystery series is an entertaining and enjoyable read. And for those who love cats, there is an added bonus with Marshmallow, who communicates telepathically with Mimi.
Mimi Lee. proprietress of Hollywoof, a pet grooming studio, is meeting her sister Alice at the school where Alice teaches when she discovers another teacher, Helen, has been murdered. Suspicion quickly falls on Alice as she was reportedly the last one known to have seen the victim alive. But Mimi is all about family, and she will stop at nothing to clear her sister’s name.
The mystery here is a good one. There are many component parts and clues, as well as some red herrings and warning bells, that make this a delight to read. I really like the school setting as it provides a plethora of ready – and believable --suspects. Interrogation of the various teachers, principal, and roommate provide a logical progression for the investigation. Mimi Lee, herself, is a great character. Her chosen profession both establishes her as an animal lover and a capable, fast-thinking person who is unafraid of a challenge. This is further bolstered when she takes in the stray cat Helen had been helping, whom Mimi names Nimbus. Her own cat, Marshmallow, is sassy personified, always ready with pointed insight that often borders on snark. The rest of the supporting cast is likewise intriguing, especially Mimi’s parents, who have a mystery of their own going on. The subplot surrounding them is one of the highlights of the story.
While I like Marshmallow and appreciate his sarcasm, I’m still not 100% sold on the whole idea of solving mysteries through a cat. It seems like the easy way out. Marshmallow finds clues in places Mimi could not possibly have gone (and, conversely, in places cats shouldn’t go), and does things a cat can’t do. Yet despite this, he has grown on me as a character (although adding Nimbus to the mix was a little much).
It is clear that Ms. Chow understands and embraces the Los Angeles vibe, peppering the story with appropriate references to places and culture, even to the point of the inevitable crosstown rivalry between USC and UCLA. (Go Bruins!). And Natalie Naudus’s narration, really adds to the Southern California experience.
Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines is a quick, fun listen. I will be checking out the next book in the series shortly.
When Mimi and her sister Alice notice another teacher slumped over in her car at Alice's school, they quickly call the police. Unfortunately, Alice was the last person to see Helen alive and she was the teacher who should have gotten the pink slip instead of her last semester, so Detective Brown has zeroed in on Alice as his top suspect. Eager to clear her sister's name, Mimi is on the case. Of course, Marshmallow is there to help, and Nimbus the little kitten spotted in the parking lot near Helen's car is as well. While chasing down leads on who would have wanted Helen dead, Mimi is also trying to find out if Nimbus has an owner, keep her business running, and tactfully help her parents out as their relationship seems to be on shaky grounds of late. Nimbus' arrival has Marshmallow sharing more of his backstory, why he is able to communicate with Mimi, and why Nimbus is in danger.
I liked this one even more than the first book in the series. I don't know if it is the double kitten cuteness, if Mimi's investigation style seems more natural and less cringe-inducing now, or if it is the genuine sisterly love between Mimi and Alice, or what. But it was a lot more fun. The backstory for Marshmallow is interesting and gives this series a scifi flavor instead of fantasy. I like the bits about Malaysia and Malaysian food and culture that get woven in as Mimi talks to her Mom. I was very happy with how her parents' thing was resolved. Mimi's relationship with Josh is still growing and he gets regular appearances along the way. The mystery kept me guessing and was well done. Overall, a delightful cozy mystery with sassy kitties to make you smile and plenty of Malaysian food references to make you hungry.
Notes on content: Maybe 10 minor swears. No sexual content beyond a kiss. One death and one other attempted murder (neither bloody). Animal test subjects is a part of Marshmallow's back story.
Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines is the second book in the Sassy Cat Series. I would recommend reading book one first for background on set-up and characters.
Mimi and Marshmallow are back but this time they have to figure out who killed a teacher at her sister’s school before Alice is charged with the murder.
What I liked: this is a cute, fun read that took me a day to finish. I love the cozy, almost Nancy Drew feel to the mystery.
Marshmallow is so cute and I looked forward to his conversations with Mimi.
The pacing is good and the clues to solve the case seem to be there, with some red herrings to throw you off.
This book had more about Mimi’s cultural background which I enjoyed.
What didn’t work for me: unless I missed it, Nimbus’s microchip that won’t scan and why she felt sick wasn’t explained.
I could have done without all the strange client requests for their animals hair cuts and treatments.
Josh and Mimi’s relationship, while sweet, seems bland. On the opposite end, the drama with her parents felt unnecessary.
Who should read it: These make excellent easy reads by the pool or on the beach. If you’re a fan of cozy mysteries with no gore check these out.
Mimi Lee is once again forced to investigate a murder in Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines. Luckily, she has her sassy, and talking (at least in Mimi’s head), cat Marshmallow to help.
Detective Brown has Mimi’s sister, Alice, in his sights as his number one suspect in Helen’s murder. Helen and Alice work as teachers in the same elementary school. But there are at least five more likely suspects at the school plus the people in Helen’s private life.
Meanwhile, Mimi is worried about her parents’ marriage. Plus she is trying to find an adoptive home for a poor little gray kitten found by the victim’s murder scene. And there is her pet grooming shop to run and her boyfriend Josh to snuggle with. Mimi is busy!
I love Marshmallow! He is once again my favorite character in this series. To be honest, I think he might be the Sherlock in the relationship. Not only is he telepathic, but he can read texts too. And he really saves the day in this book. Overall, Mimi Reads Between the Lines is another great entry in this cozy cat mystery series. 4 stars!
Thanks to Berkley, Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours, and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
Mimi Lee, our favorite pet groomer, is back in another fun mystery. This time a teacher is murdered! Mimi's sister Alice, is a teacher at the same school where Helen Reed, the victim, was discovered dead. The detective, working the case, has his sights set on Alice as his primary suspect. How rude! While Mimi is investigating and working at her pet grooming business, she's also concerned about her parents relationship. Never a dull moment for our female protagonist!
"Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines" by Jennifer J. Chow is the second book in "A Sassy Cat Mystery." And! Marshmallow is one sassy cat. I might just add, it's always interesting and quirky when Mimi and Marshmallow communicate with one another. Mmmm. Then we have a new kitten to add to the mix in this cozy mystery. Such a cutie.
It's great to have Mimi's boyfriend, Josh, back in the story. He's always busy with the law firm, but their relationship is progressing forward.
I didn't solve this mystery. However, when that person with nefarious motives was revealed, I wasn't surprised. Cute story!
Hollywoof, Mimi's pet grooming business is doing great and the only thing that could get better for her and her boyfriend Josh was if they had more time to spend together. He's busy at his law firm and when she's not pampering pets, Mimi is searching for clues in a new investigation and worrying for her parents, not acting their usual self. This case is still too close to Mimi because after joining her sister at the school where she works, they discover one of Alice's coworker, slumped in her car, dead. And the detective seems to believe that her sister being the last one to see the victim alive makes her the perfect suspect. Helped once again by her sarcastic sidekick; Marshmallow the talking cat, a new kitten will also join the fun and the investigation this time. Another great installment in the Sassy Cat Mysterie and I can't wait for the next one because these characters feels like friends to me. The kind of friends that makes you laugh with their crazy antics.
Mimi and Marshmallow, the talking cat, add a new Kitten, Nimbus, to the mix for this second book in the series. Mimi's sister is a suspect in a murder that takes place at her school. A fellow teacher is dead and Alice was the last one to see her alive. Helen, the victim, turns out to be a poor little rich girl. The suspects, other than Alice, would all have direct financial benefits from her death. The same police investigator from the first book insists Alice would benefit because Helen's will included money to fund programs at the school. Josh, Mimi's attorney boyfriend helps track this information down. Solving the crime turns into a real family effort. Once again, Asian American cultural traditions provide background. This time the focus is on food, celebrations, and expectations regarding the roles of husbands and wives. A fun read that will have readers looking forward to the next book in the series.
This is my first Mimi Lee book. I can't say that I loved it, but it was an ok listen. I think most people would classify this book as cozy because you don't need to think much or wonder why Mimi decided to do her sleuthing or why the detective is just plain stupid. Without risking a spoiler, the detective decided that one of the three people who together found the body of a teacher at Mimi's little sister's school, must have killed her. Enter Mimi's little sister the easy suspect and the reason Mimi needs to clear her sister's name.
I have to also agree with what other reviewers said, the language in this book is not used by anyone. I don't think my social circle is so small that I am missing out on this type of language. I watch television also, and I've never even heard it on TV.
I liked the fact that the cat was always the smartest person in the room at all times. I'm not a cat person, but I liked this one.
Mimi’s sister becomes the prime suspect when a fellow teacher is found dead. Poisoning is suspected, and Alice did give her something to settle her stomach. Mimi just can’t sit back and let the detective solve the case. She knows her baby sis is innocent and she will prove it! Unfortunately, every time she thinks she has discovered a major clue in the case, it fizzles out. To add to her problems, she is afraid her dad has lost interest in her mom. It’s a good thing she has her faithful - and talented - cat Marshmallow to aid in her sleuthing. He is even more talented than Mimi suspected. Another rescue cat, now called Nimbus, is also instrumental in nailing down the clues. It’s a dangerous trail but a fun read, made even more so by these extraordinary cats. Well written with delightful characters, there is a bit of romance in the air, which, hopefully, will soon blossom into something more.
