Kahlil Gibran

Kahlil Gibran (Arabic: جبران خليل جبران ) was a Lebanese-American artist, poet, and writer.
Born in the town of Bsharri in modern-day Lebanon (then part of Ottoman Mount Lebanon), as a young man he emigrated with his family to the United States where he studied art and began his literary career. In the Arab world, Gibran is regarded as a literary and political rebel. His romantic style was at the heart of a renaissance in modern Arabic literature, especially prose poetry, breaking away from the classical school. In Lebanon, he is still celebrated as a literary hero.
He is chiefly known in the English-speaking world for his 1923 book The Prophet, an early example of inspirational fiction including a series of philosophical essays written in poetic English prose. The book sold well despite a cool critical reception, gaining popularity in the 1930s and again, especially in the 1960s counterculture.
Gibran is the third best-selling poet of all time, behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu.

My Rating 4.5/5

First of all I don't think 'The Prophet' needs any review and criticism. Those who have read it already knows how powerful this piece of literature is. As Al Mustafa narrates his musings about various aspects of life we start to question about the stigma's in our society. Al Mustafa clarifies every doubt with an answer propably we all look for.

I just loved the way 'The Broken Wings' is written. The title itself justifies the writing. Selma's character really touched me. In other situation we would have thought bad of her but Gibran flipped the coin and made us look into Selma and understand in what situation a woman takes a step like what Selma took. Her character was weak but also powerful.

I didn't like 'A Tear and a smile' that much, it was relevant enough but the verses were not captivating to me, rather they were very monotonous.

In his works Gibran has revealed the secret of love and affection to us. He has tried to hold the integrity of human beings by trying to paint everything in a single cloth of life and left the comparison for us to do. Throughout this book it exudes positivity and inspire us to live.

No one is unaquainted to the works of Kahlil Gibran - the most celebrated writers of all time. His timeless classic - 'The Prophet' - has been read and loved across the world. The publisher brings you Gibran's priceless works as a collection, in their latest edition - The Prophet and other works. This book consists of -

'The Prophet' - a collection of 26 preachings on love, life, family, happiness, children, beauty, and a myriad of topics;

'The Broken Wings' - a tragic love story between a young woman betrothed to another man and a young man who is supposedly modeled after Gibran himself; and,

'A Tear and a Smile' - a collection of essays and poems.

The Prophet follows the story of a Prophet named Almustafa, who is leaving the city of Orphalese after residing 12 longs years. As he realizes his last moments in the very city that he grew so much closer to, is nearing, he decides to gift the city his wise words, as a parting gift. The humble and eager citizens of the city gather around him to ask about all various events and parts of life.

When asked about love, Almustafa says, ''Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.'' And when asked about children, he says ''Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of life's longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you."

The Broken Wings, a tragic romance based in Beirut, Lebanon, addresses social issues like religious corruption, ill-treatment of women and greed for wealth.

A Tear and a Smile makes us readers go through many emotions as Gibran explores life and the living. His essays and poems - either brimming with sadness or joy for living - will make you mull over life.

This collection is the perfect choice to explore Kahlil Gibran's works in all its glory. 💜

Am still reeling in this whirlwind of words that are pure bliss and soul-soothing.

I don’t think I have ever come across any reader who would not appreciate the works of Kahlil Gibran. Basking in this idyllic compilation is something I would surely recommend.

“The Prophet” is something that I can always re-read as the 26 lessons by Al Mustafa has some apt illuminating life lessons.Out of the three parts which the book is divided into my favourite is “The Broken Wings”. The yearning for love & heartbreak is so moving in this story that it becomes intensely engaging.

This collection gives you perspective into the nuances of life and surely is unputdownable. Am glad I got to read this to have a break from the hustle and bustle of my current routine.

To understand the heart and mind of a person, look not at what he has already achieved, but at what he aspires to.

*This review was initially published at The Readdicts Book Blog. For more reviews, go here .

When I was a teenager, I had downloaded a free copy of Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet, but like the many books I have lying on my TBR, I never read it. I have never said anything like this before, but I am glad I didn’t read it then. I firmly believe that like the wand chooses the wizard, sometimes, the book chooses the reader. Some books just come to you at the right time. The Prophet is one of those books for me. I don’t know what I would have understood had I read it as a teenager, but when I read it now, I could connect to the book.

One of the most beautifully written and lyrical works, reading The Prophet is like meeting a part of yourself that you seem to have lost somewhere. Gibran, although a Christian, was influenced by Islam because of his fellow countrymen, which worked wonderfully for me, because I am quite inclined towards reading and understanding Islam in general. Not a religious book by any means, The Prophet in more spiritual in its essence, in that it gives the reader a deeper understanding of something simple, but it has so much clarity, meaning and truth to it that your perspective towards a bunch of things is bound to take a leap.

Considering where I am on my personal journey right now, The Prophet is a book I will henceforth hold dear and might even refer to here and there. The other works are just as amazing- if not more. Some of the lines from the poems and stories are going to stay with me for a long time to come. I am glad I waited to read Kahlil Gibran and I’m even more glad that the marvel has lived up to the expectations and hype surrounding it. I would definitely recommend this edition published by @srishtipub as you get a lot more than just The Prophet, it is easy to read and full of significance, it’s easily available in India and you’re bound to learn something new for sure.

*Note: A copy of this book was provided by Srishti Publishers in exchange for an honest review. We thank them.

"The Prophet and other works" is a noted work by Kahlil Gibran.
I often heart a lot about this book since a long time and i finally got my schedule ready to read this finest work.
The book has three parts.
The first part has 26 lessons, the second has a sensitive affectionate story and third part has verses and poems.
The title of this book was enough for me to pick it.

As I started reading, the lessons comes in the form of conversation with various people.
These conversations are too deep and I felt spme of them very familiar as these are life lessons admired and admitted by many people and the philosophy they hold have been passed through generation to generation.
The Way they are written needs maturity beyond imagination.

The affectionate story carries it's own sensitivity in it.
Even though it is set in 20th century, I could relate to it.
The feelings towards selma, her thoughts have been expressed in such a manner that One can witness the love the narrator holds in his heart.
I was deeply touched by this story.

Third part again has works that makes us think about our life and the aspects related to it.
They have been penned down on various topics.
I must say the language is extremely well and perfect.
This book turned out to be far more better than what I expected.
I couldn't stop admiring the writing style.
The Broken Wings is definitely my favorite story so far.
Strongly recommended to everyone.

'The Prophet' by Kahlil Gibran needs no introduction. This poem is a masterpiece♥️

To be honest, I have never really liked poetry. I think that poems are too short and fail in doing justice to the content within. But this one, my oh my, I loved it! This is the first time when I have read a poem which physically hurt me! I wish I had read this gem earlier!

This book also had 2 other works of his - 'The broken wings' and 'A tear and a smile', and these too were extremely beautiful♥️

This is perhaps the most beautiful books I have ever read♥️

Khalil Gibran is a name that needs no much of an introduction, and mostly by his name the term "prophet" will cross our minds for obvious reasons.

The book the prophet and other works, is a collection of Khalil Gibrans Musings and Tales. The book is divided into three parts, The Prophet, The Broken Wings, And A Tear And A Smile.

Prophet consists of 26 chapters or I don't know what to call it, lessons, chapters or stories even, which goes into showing us the life and happenings of Al Mustafa, it is raw, and can take us through a different journey. It might have happened long long back, yet takes us through the paths positively.

The next is a story of love, heartbreak, sorrow and much more. It conveys social issues, along with a beautiful tale of love and heartbreak. The story of Selma, Where she loses herself as a human, in all the misery, married to a man who never bothers about her, but lives his life with all the other woman around. It doesn't take a good turn, yet the story is so beautifully crafted.

A tear and a smile is a different story altogether, which takes up a positive turn and is a bit longer than the other tales.

I really loved reading this masterpiece as a whole. Everything is just perfect. The writing style is a complex one, yet once we get a grasp of it, it takes a smooth flow.

There are some books that just touches your soul ! Let me know the names of such books that touched your soul

THE PROPHET AND OTHER WORKS ~ KHALIL GIBRAN

I dont think KHALIL GIBRAN requires any introduction . He was an lebanese-americam immigrant poet.

This collection has three of his famous work . THE PROPHET , THE BROKEN WINGS and A TEAR AND A SMILE .

One cannot consider the works of khalil gibran without mentioning The Prophet , this is a compositon of several (26) poetic pieces . The pieces are about love , time , work etc etc and they are so philosophical and relatable. I have read this many many times and still it touches my soul just like when i read it for the first time .

Second is The Broken Wing , which is a poetic tragic love story set in 20th centurt Beriut . This piece has so much emotions packed between the lines . What more do i say , you have to read kahlil gibran's work .

Third is A Tear and a Smile , this is also a collection of verses and poems . These poems are sure to catch your attention and make you think about life , human conditions and the wonders of being alive .

Although gibran rejected the title of philosopher , his works suggest that he truly was one . I just love reading poems set in 19-20th century and the pure romanticised emotions that they bring is what i crave everyday.
Highly highly recommended !

"Tenderness and kindness are not signs of weakness and despair, but manifestations of strength and resolution.” — Kahlil Gibran

Kahlil Gibran is one of the eminent poet and writer. His works are indeed a masterpiece and have been a leading light to many. 'The Prophet And Other Works' is a miscellanea of Gibran's three works that is 'The Prophet', 'The Broken Wings' and 'A Tear And A Smile'.

'The Prophet' comprises twenty-six musings recited by a wise man named Al Mustafa who sojourned in Orphalese for many years and when he was about to egress, the people of Orphalese asked him to share his insights about mundane life, love, marriage, happiness, sorrow and many more.

'The Broken Wings' is a poetic tragic love story of the protagonist and his beloved Selma. This story literally broke me as it was an epitome of an unerring definition of love. It was a heart-wrenching story dealing with longing love and highlights patriarchy and social issues.

'A Tear And A Smile' is a collection of stories and verses which emphasis on various phases of life, seasons and a lot more. It was simply beautiful and heart-warming.

This was one of the beautiful read for me as it has pleased me throughout. I would rate it 5/5

Four things support the world: the learning of the wise, the justice of the great, the prayers of the good, and the valour of the brave."

Kahlil Gibran is one such writer about whose writing I have heard a lot and have always wanted to read.
"The Prophet and Other Works" is a compilation of some of the author's most popular and notable works focusing on arousing a zeal for living and a positive mindset in people.

The book is broadly divided into three parts -
• The Prophet
• The Broken Wings
• A Tear and a Smile

These three parts include numerous instances imparting life lessons, a tragic love story and a collection of verses to urge you to view life from a different perspective.

This book is filled with so much positivity and perspective that I think this is a book, everyone should pick up. The language is so rich and elegant and the way the author has presented his thoughts really got to me. I also got a glimpse into why his writing is so celebrated and acknowledged. I felt that his writing has a way of getting deeply connected to the readers, prompting them to look at things through his perspective.
I was honestly completely engrossed throughout the read.

I have always wanted to read the works by Kahlil Gibran especially 'The Prophet' but never got a chance until now. I am so glad I got a chance to read this masterpiece. Those who have already read this know how inspiring and remarkable this book is.

This book has three parts, 'The Prophet', 'The Broken Wings' and 'A Tear and a Smile' and all three works are equally amazing. As the Prophet explains in detail various facets of life like love, death, marriage, time etc we cannot help but think about life from a different perspective.

I liked how the author has narrated 'The Broken Wings' and the character of Selma is shown as both weak and powerful. Though its a tragic love story we get to learn a lot and get a new perspective of life from it.

'A Tear and a Smile' is a collection of poems that are very impressive and equally remarkable. This book contains 3 of the most beautiful works by Kahlil Gibran that I think is a must-read for everyone. The language is rich and could be difficult for budding readers. This book has so much positivity that can help each one of us in a great way. This book is highly recommended for everyone.

his book surely doesn't need my introduction, The prophet is well known to most of the bibliophiles. This work of magnificent author Kahlil Gibran comes with a whole lot of positivity. It is is divided in three parts The Prophet, The broken Wings and A tear and a smile, these three are further divided into lessons, chapters or poetries.
My favourite part of this book was "A tear and a Smile" because I love reading poetries. It has some sort of different romanticism which gave life to many simplest emotions and thoughts.
The language may not be easy for beginners because at some places it is a bit poetic. The words used in it leaves a strong impact on everyone's heart. It would not be wrong to say that this book can also be called a very good self help book.
I would recommend it to everyone because it Contains some really important life lessons and hidden optimistic messages in it.

Life seems beautiful when you're reading Gibran's words. As if a bubble was created to undergo several rotations and all of a sudden someone pricked it eventually to get me back to usual.

This is my first pick in Kahlil's collection and turned out inevitably gorgeous. Though initially I struggled a bit to comprehend in one go because of the exquisite collection of words but gradually caught up along the way.

With due reference to a whole load of questions cluttered in my head, the book proved immensely helpful. Contains really deep insights and hence pretty much thought provoking that compels you think for hours and honestly it's worth it. Don't rush while exploring through this for its supposed to be felt for as long as you feel like so. Feed the soul with this beauty. Obviously a recommended one!!!

MY RATING- 5/5 STARS
“ Love will be my sole comforter, and I shall drink love like wine and wear it like garment”
Who doesn’t like Kahlil Girban’s work? And Prophet being everybody’s favorite.
This book has the whole collection of “The Prophet” , Kahlil’s first love and heartbreak story and many other poems and his beautifully written works. The book is divided into 3 section The Prophet, The Broken Wings, and A Tear and a Smile. Other than The Prophet, The Broken Wings is my favorite part, where he has writen about his first love Selema and their incomplete story. Few other poems from the third section are also flawless like ‘A Poet’s Voice’and ‘The Sacrifice’.
Overall it’s a splendid read that will you smile and cry at the same time. I really like the writing style which quite easy and at the same time filled with deep meaning.

No wonder why Khalil Gibran books are read even today. This is the first time i an reading them. There is a spiritual connect with it. Although I dont like the fact that 2 or more religions are mixed in his book and The broken wing, almost speaks about extra marital affairs with limits, something of that sought. Other than that, i find the entire book thought provoking and emotions lingering along. The Prophet contains 26 musings varying from beauty, death ,peace and much more.

While I found the writing style slightly different from contemporary prose, it is still accessible and engaging. I skipped some parts since I'm not a poetry fan. For poetry enthusiasts and philosophers, this collection is a treasure trove.
