In Between: Poems of Midlife is the second poetry collection I have read by this talented author. The collection is inscribed with the words, “To every woman struggling to come into her own. It is your time.” A highly relatable invitation to what turned out to be an insightful, lyrical book that I highly recommend to other soul searchers out there.
Lomas included a Preface to the collection in which she recounts her absence from poetry writing and what drew her back to the art form. I would like to state emphatically that Lomas does indeed know how to write poetry, despite the length of time between projects.
The poetry in this book resonates deep inside, with statements such as “Not a time of crisis,/a metamorphosis.” In many ways, Lomas’s own self-consciousness captured in her Preface is shed as she explores the different aspects of womanhood – its challenges, beauties, and guises.
I could relate to every word and believe that any woman who has held a new baby, lost someone special, questioned one’s identity, or felt the bitter sting of sorrow will find something to cherish in these words. Having just lost my own father, I found comfort in the author’s descriptions of such heart ache.
I urge you not to wait, but rather to purchase your copy of this captivating poetry collection today. Bravo, S.J.! As you so aptly put it, “beauty is found anywhere.”
