I see my other lives, a career in the Marines, those damn hand-written tests in law school, a business consultant, as if they're stories from a book. I see my books as if I lived there, as if I were friends with the characters. All things we remember are behind us, only those we imagine lie before.
I'm not sure which place I prefer, but I don't have to choose. They live together in my mind. My books have some award nominations, they have bestseller tags across multiple countries. I write about justice, honor, and loyalty because that's what I care about. My stories are mostly set within worlds that haven't been, but could be. We have to be ready for when those times come.
No matter where I went, I always had a book with me. Thanks to 21st Century technology, I now have hundreds of books loaded on my phone and always with me. This breakthrough allows me to binge read my favorites. How many books would I have read on deployments had I not had to have a physical book with me? I paced myself so I wouldn't finish too quickly.
We aren't encumbered like that now. I love the works of Robert Heinlein, Anne McCaffrey, JRR Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, and so many more. I have been compared to Andre Norton and that is humbling - she was an incredible author with a huge list of novels to her credit. With every new book, I aspire to live up to those that you, the readers, have compared me to.
Through a bizarre series of events, I ended up in Fairbanks, Alaska. I never expected to retire to a place where golf courses are only open for four months out of the year. But that's the way it is. It is off the beaten path. My wife and I get to watch the northern lights from our driveway. Our dog has lots of room to run. And temperatures reach fifty below zero. We have from three and a half hours of daylight in the winter to twenty-four hours in the summer.
It's all part of the give and take of life. If we didn't have those extremes, then everyone would live in the sub-arctic.
Justice. Sweet revenge. Karma. Retribution. Payback. Whatever you want to call it....this story anthology brings it!
I love short story collections that introduce new-to-me authors! This anthology has 22 stories in it on the theme of justice. Some of the authors are familiar from free novellas I have downloaded....some from online author events (like Michele PW who just participated in a Horror writers event), but most were new to me!
The stories are:
System Failure by MK Farrar - A dad on a dark mission. Innocence Lost by DK Greene - It all started with a forgotten teddy bear. The Ninth Man by Jeff Shelby - Eight down. One to go. The Last Assignment by Douglas Dorow - Stevens & Rupert. More than a man and his dog. Mine by Michele PW - What's "mine" is.....yours? No Reason by Steve Davison - British Intelligence vs psychopath Death and Dollars by Jonathan Shipperley - "Boom, Motherfucker." Sasquatch Hunting by Kes McDaniel - Armed robbery done Sasquatch style. An Inside Job by Ian Sainsbury - When Bedlam Boy shows up, bad people die. A Dance with Death by Drew Avera - Desperation Kills. Cross Your Heart by G.K. Parks - All in a Day's Work....yikes! Rats by JR Pomerantz - Ravi has rats in his pants. Could the day get worse? Yep. The Silent One by Jack Probyn - One shot. Just one shot. Super Something by John Hindmarsh - Don't try to fool Penny. You can't. Getting the Wind by Stephen Couch - You don't have to be young to have secrets.... Straight Flight by Arleigh Jacobs - Colt knows a little girl always needs her Teddy bear! The Package by N Gray - Deliver a package. Easy....right? Temptress by Fallon Raynes - One heist too many....shoulda got out of town sooner. Lane Departure by Tom Fowler - A trip to the store goes south fast. Hunting Darkness by A.K. Hughey - Lucia vs. traffickers The First Hit by Craig Martelle - You never forget your first. Loathsome Justice by M.A. Comley - The bad guys aren't going to see the light of day ever again.
There wasn't a single story in this collection that I didn't enjoy reading. The characters and plots are varied and I enjoyed the fast-paced action in each. Several of these writers are new-to-me, and I always love finding new authors to read!
Craig Martelle introduces, edits and includes a novella in this great anthology, Make Them Pay. His particular offering is The First Hit.
Ex-Marine, now hit man for the Peace Archive, 'Ian Bragg', is in place and ready to fulfill his contract, to take out drug dealer Guillaume Bandeau, aka Gum Band, or 'Gummy', but pauses when the hit seems just too easy. Will he go ahead and shoot? When others with a grievance against 'Gummy' turn up at Bragg's stakeout spot, how do the trio resolve the dealer's fate? Who's the only survivor? Craig Martelle expertly brings Ian Bragg to life and succinctly explains this is his first contract killing even before the story unfolds. Along with other authors, such as M.A. Conley, Ian W. Sainsbury et al, Craig Martelle's clever narrative and powerful action scenes are a great addition to his other genres in sci-fi, mystery and more.

Anthologies such as this one are great because they give you new stories by authors you know and love while also introducing you to some you don’t know. I’ve enjoyed reading some of the work of authors like Jack Probyn, Douglas Dorow and my absolute favourite Tom Fowler. I find myself just as excited to read new authors, and hopefully find a new favourite, as I do reading new stuff from those I already follow. Each of these writers are top class authors with the reviews to show for it and for them to all be together in one anthology like this makes this a must buy for crime thriller fans.
This may be a short story but it has all the excitement and thrills found in a longer narrative. Just hope you're in the right place at the right time should trouble come calling. Are you listening John? Highly Recommended.
If you are looking to read some new to you authors this book is perfect. A great compilation of stories and authors. The stories are just long enough to get an idea of who the author is and what they are trying to portray. There are definitely a few new books I will be reading.
Good compilation of stories. Some better than others. One of my favorites was "Mine". It was intriguing and unexpected -not just the ending but the whole story. Good writing!
I liked the short stories. Each different and yet all with their own personal preferences. Some left me hanging and I wish others were longer. Can you recommend more anthologies ??
This is a great collection of short stories about retribution and a bit of revenge! They all tell a great tale with interesting characters. I highly recommend it.
A collection of thrillers, some excellent, a few rather weak, plenty in between. Most were enjoyable and I did discover a few new authors to investigate further. Well worth a read.
I enjoyed it but realized I like the complete story. I would be really interested and invested in the characters and then it was finished. I like books vs short stories.
I Enjoyed the variety of stories and the talent of the writers. Only disappointment was the loss (repeated) of Internet connection. Really hate being interrupted when reading a (or in this case, several) stories.
