TO BE REBORN...In the Wild Hunt, someone is looking for friends in all the wrong places. Someone else is missing without a trace. And plans which have long been in motion…begin to unfurl.
Numero in cui si portano avanti trame. Tante. Troppe.
- LOVE the nod and references to Alice in Wonderland!
- Why isn't anyone listening to Gabby? She's been the one making the most sense and asking the important questions since issue #15.
- In the same vein, why isn't anyone paying more attention to Rahne (other than Dani, I mean)? Seriously. On an island inhabited by several powerful telepaths and empaths, none of them has picked up on her distress?
- Would like to note that Rod Reis continues to do great on the art front, as always.
The semi-abstract artwork is so awful, it hurts my eyes. I have trouble following what's happening in any given scene. I want to fling the comic away from me, rather than get swept up in its world.
Beyond that, there was a random scattering of events. Rahne got some news about the status of her son Tier. While this was probably the smallest bit of actual story, this was the detail that held the greatest interest for me. I'm sure there will be more on that in subsequent issues, but for now, nothing.
Then we watched an extremely stupid scene in which a group of younger mutants swapped bodies for a few seconds because, I don't know, reasons. It was tied to this whole, mutants-using-their-powers-in-tandem thing that Marvel has been pushing for the last few months.
This was all over the place. The art in particular was awful, but worse, inconsistent. The scenes on the horse looked like half arse sketches and mistakes on the first page where the same mutants change outfits panel to panel is just a poor attention to detail.
The stories.... It's a little bit of everything, with a lot of potential interesting leads, but covered half assed in little dribs and drabs. The New Mutant cast is an interesting one but they seem to want to give them all a full story arc which just isn't viable all at once.
Rahne gets a few pages which doesn't really move anywhere, Magick could have been awesome but it happens off page, Shadow King story continues to move ever so glacially, Dani and Mirage could be interesting but, oh nope, let's do it off page and the character introduced for their impetus is doing everything, you guessed it, off page. Then we don't even touch or develop what looked to be an interesting ending to X of Swords with Doug, Warpath is ignored....
I want to love New Mutants, I loved it early release but it really cannot seem to decide what it wants to be and as such is spread far too thin. Adding in eye bleeding art which takes away from the story....
3 stars is probably too generous but I want to love it.
The Ayala/Reis run on this book is a real revelation, with both creators clearly being inspired by the other to do even better work with each passing issue. It just keeps getting better and better.
I'm loving the plotline with the Shadow King. What's he up to? Is Professor X aware that he's on the island? Have those children never been warned about him? Clearly Gabby knows that something's up, but I think that's a result of her own anxieties regarding Krakoan resurrection.
Then we have the plotline with Rahne's son, Tier. Is he dead or alive? And why does nobody care about finding out the answer except Rahne herself?
And, finally, we have the main plot this issue...the mutant child who's lost in Otherworld and the story of Karma and Moonster going after them.
Oh, but don't forget Warpath completely misunderstanding the questions that Dani set for him! The adorable idiot.
This book is full of characters I love in interesting situations exploring fascinating ideas and it's all wrapped up in gorgeous art that evokes the work of Bill Sienkiewicz without directly aping him. I love it!
This was borderline disappointing. Not because it was bad but mainly because there was noticeable regression from the standard the previous issues set. I'm enjoying the stories and the ground they are covering. Not thrilled about revisiting Otherworld though. My main problem here was the presentation. The flow and balance that had helped smoothly interweave the various storylines was lacking here. And I can do without the full pages of exposition. Both the Warpath journal entry and Crooked Caller pages were unnecessary distractions. Hoping this gets back on track next issue.
The Shadow King parts were by far the best. Again, New Mutants suffers from following too many characters. Wolvesbane is in agony. She's about to go apeshit. I do like the Wonderland references in Otherworld. I'm a huge Wonderland fan. I would have enjoyed either of the stories being told more if either had been the only one being told. This issue is just too busy. 🙁
I wish I understood what this book was trying to be. I feel like the creative team has an amazing idea behind it and isn't being given the green light to run with it. Instead we're fed these half complete story lines which leads to inconsistent experiences from issues to issue. I *loved* issue 15, and this one I am totally unsure about what is even happening.
Art gets more and more trippy. Though in Otherword I understand why. Also don’t like the simultaneous stories when one doesn’t keep up the pace. Will keep reading because I do want to figure out if one they interject and 2 how it ends. I did enjoy the bit about not having to be cruel, destructive, or wasteful. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.
God I love the art in this series. Creepy Shadow King stuff. An Alice in Wonderland reference. I love the psychedelic New Mutants art being applied to Otherworld, it's so great.
