I enjoyed this book but you need to have read or listened to the first book to know what is is going on, also the story continues on into the the next book so be prepared to get the next book because you will want to know what happens. I did enjoy this book but think I preferred the first book because it was set more in a big city with bad guy's chasing the hero and you really get a feel for how the EMP pulse has effected every day life, where as this book is mainly just feuding families in a town where the law is losing control. Kane (the dog, who was my favourite character) was sadly missing from most of the story. However the characters are like able (if they survived) and the author really gives you a sense of the desperation the characters feel and what they must do to live. I hope the next book comes out quickly. Colby has made it out of the city but life out in the country is just as dangerous. Especially when you wake up in a strange bed with no memory of who are. The only thing you remember is a spider tattoo. Finding the man wearing the tattoo could prove to be deadly but the closer he gets and the more people he talks to the more he begins to remember. Just who is the woman named Alicia? And why is it easier to picture a dog than her? Will be be able to find them or have they fearing him dead moved on already? At the same time in his home town the war between the Strickland and Riker's is heating up and bodies are once again beginning to drop like flies. Will any body still be alive by the time Colby gets his memory back? I liked the narrator as he used different voices for each of the characters and the story flowed along nicely under his care. Of course Colby's journey wouldn't be without it's issues but to end up as a partially naked scarecrow in a field is unexpected. Alicia and Kane are missing for the majority of the story but he's not without allies. Before he can locate them, the local issue must be dealt with. Back in Humboldt County, things have escalated between the Riker's and the Strickland's and someone's duplicitous behavior is confirmed. There is also a new shady element looking to enter the race for town savior. Daisy once mentioned Alicia's likeness to Skye Strickland, but based on the reactions of Colby's brothers, she's the spitting image. What effect this will have on Frank and his family I don't know.
This second volume centers on the escalating feud between the Rikers and the Stricklands. Colby is slowly recovering his memory as events, locations, or conversations jog his thoughts. At first, I thought it odd that Colby had no problem shooting people but perhaps muscle memory had more to do with that. Alicia and Kane are unfortunately absent for most of this volume. I missed Kane, he is my favorite. Additional characters and town history are revealed as we follow Colby’s investigation into his memory. The story drags a little but it is still good. I look forward to the next volume to discover how this all turns out. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I like the fact that this series showd what can happen, and does happen, when two large families feud over generations.
This series highlights the dangers of self-centered people who think they can bully others into submission, especially during an apocalypse. Lots of intrigue, betrayal, shooting, kidnappings. I look foward to the 3rd book of this series. Kudos to Jack Hunt. Well written and excellent character development
This held my interest fairly well as Colby tries to regain his memory. I find the family feud in Humboldt a bit tiresome, though it is clearly a focal point of the book. There are some good people in this book, though we only see them briefly. I still struggle with connecting with characters since there are so many really bad people. Kane is probably my favorite but was not in this book much. On to book 3.
I was FLOORED by the first book of this series. I fully expected to feel that way about this one. I’m an avid Hunt fan. I have to admit though, this book just didn’t pack the same punch. It was ok but if I’m being honest, I’m not sure I’d read the next book based only on this one. My hope is that it gets better as the plot moves forward. If the next book isn’t better, it might be the first time I stop reading in the middle of a series authored by Hunt.
I always respond to the detailed description of these characters
That's the few difference between Jack Hunt and other authors. I was not able to read straight thru like I usually so do. However, I was able to pick up the book at different times and I sailed right thru. I didn't need to look over a few pages to refresh myself! I am ready for Book 3.!!!!!
I found this story entertaining although a bit dark, but to be expected in a apocalyptic genre. Characters and story line are believable and greatly intertwined. I found a couple of things a bit unrealistic but for the most part a good read and leaves you wanting to continue reading.
This was a good read, but so violent. Maybe that's the way it will be if SHTF .I wish for once people would come together during bad times instead of making things worse. I didn't know Humboldt county was so clan ish. Interesting to read about.
Nonstop action cover to cover. A bit like watching four tennis matches all at the time with all the switches between characters and locations. Interesting situations with nefarious characters but sometimes you wonder who the good guys are. Definitely worth the time to read and enjoy.
I almost put this book down. It was hard to read, and Kane or Alicia did not make an appearance till near the end of the book. The action was decent though. This book did not flow well, as he started out on the scarecrow cross and not idea on how he got there or separated from Alicia and Kane.
This series has an unique storyline, it was true years ago but remains true in present time. Feuding families are as old as the Hatfield’s and the McCoy’s. You are transported into their world, and what a roller coaster ride it is!
I've found Jack's books to be universally good. Some better than others, but always good, and some great. Can't wait until I can download book 3 of the series and see how Colby and Kane handle this new world (ok, now Alicia too).
Book one pulled me in and continues with book two. I’ve seen the documentaries pertaining to the area of Humbolt and this series, so far, has me hooked even more. So much going on, keeps ya guessing at every turn.
This was another great read with lots of action. I intend to read sequel. I like the characters. The author continues to hold my interest. Being retired military, I hope the militia gets it's due.
I believe this is one of the most realistic settings for post- apocalyptic books I have read. Those that will try to take advantage of the situation and those that will try to prevent that from happening as well as the current government handling of a crisis.
The author did a great job conveying a family feud between two families that takes no prisoners and tears up the community. Great job developing Colby and Alicia with introductions to several evil people.
Colby hung up to die like a scarecrow. The beating that cost him his memories. Meeting some good people trying to help and provide hope. Learning about a militia that will be far more challenging than either the Rikers or Strictland
Amazing storyline keeping the reader intently following each section of families as their stories become so intense you can’t put it down or get off your tablet or iPad!!
The new powerless world is lawless for all: a prodigal brother returning home and the warring marijuana growing rivals in the hills. Add a militia group to the pot and stir.
I read this front to back non-stop. Fast pace with twists not expected. I thought book one was good but it was just an introduction into the characters which got me hooked. Moving on to book three.
Mr. Hunt continues to amaze and thrill with the exploits of Colby and Kane. EMP threats are real and this storyline seems very plausible in this day and age.
