Very entertaining

This was a fun, if steamy, Regency romance. Maggie and Tobias were rather eccentric, artistic individuals with a lot of secrets they hid from everyone around them. Somehow, when they directly encountered each other, they found that they could see past the other's surface mannerisms used to keep the world at a distance.

As they revealed one secret at a time to each other and found acceptance instead of derision, they found it easier to share the next one.

All the characters were well defined and were consistent within themselves. The dialogue was witty, entertaining, and both helped define characters as well as contribute a lot of enjoyment for its own sake.

The author presented a great deal of information about the operation of the textile industry during the 1800s, and managed to do so in a way that made it both memorable and entertaining.

This story was as bright and colorful as one of Tobias' outfits, and will brighten your day when you read it.

This was a wonderful book to read. I loved the witty banter between the hero and heroine. I loved how Maggie who was intelligent and cared about her family. I enjoy a hero who works for a living and is able to support his family with what he enjoys. The secrets kept the book moving and making you want to keep reading to find out what happens next. I liked that characters from the other books in the series were scattered throughout this book to see what is going on in their lives and how they help the H/h get to their HEA. I highly recommend reading this book.

Superb writing. Likeable, well-developed characters. By the end of the first chapter, the world and people were real to me. That’s great world-building! Maggie, our spunky heroine, has entertainingly Bohemian parents who are loving but negligent—both with their children and their estate. Maggie is determined to elevate her family’s fortunes so she turns to the dangerous game of secret collecting and blackmail. Our hero, Blake, is eccentric and full of witty banter, determined to play the fool (kinda like a less angsty Hamlet) for reasons of his own. Highly recommend!

Wow, such a great story, it really drew me in and I was totally hooked! I really felt like a complete story, I didn’t feel as if there was anything missing and the twists and turns made it all the more unputdownable!! This is the first book I’ve read by Charlie and now I’m looking forward to reading them all! An absolute must read for anyone who likes the genre, it’s so different to any others in this genre I’ve read before and I loved every minute of it.

Steamy, witty and engaging historical romance. Maggie and Tobias kept me interested to the end. Plenty of secrets that lead to love but first they have to trust each other before love comes around.

Will he be able to part with his secrets to make room for someone else heart ...

I confess I had some fears after reading the blurb and the instruction chapters, I dreaded to see the blackmailing plot dragging until the end. It would have been then an angsty tale.
Thankfully, it was not, especially when the heroine is awful in the extortion business.

Maggie or Lady Magnificent is one sweet young woman, whose upbringing in a close to bankruptcy marquessate made her wary of artists and their inconsistencies. Instead she is looking for a way out of their predicament. Not a jolly rescue, but one which could raise fonds.
But for this, she must first compile well hidden secrets and then find the means to extort money from them. Thus how she finds herself in the hero’s chamber.
Tobias, in appearance has no secret, because he is a enigma. He is not the man he presents to the world, a fop with outrageous headache-in-the-making waistcoats. Everything is just a facade to hide the true Tobias, the one with ideas, dreams, ambitions and a conscience but also the one who has been wounded by careless laughs. His renown as a jokester serves him to free him from other expectations, it is a well honed weapon.
So what he is to do when a lady break into his room.

Both use their appearance to create a tale, Maggie is petite, oft dismissed or rather invisible, which is perfect for eavesdropping while Tobias is brushed aside because he is too visible, a dandy, so quite harmless.
She collects secrets, he is a walking one. She is determined to use them when he only wishes to avoid being hurt.
From their first encounter, it is the beginning of long battle of wits, and while they trade quips, they also come close enough to share some of their secrets as both see the other, they are not blinded by the other’s appearance, they see past the game played. Yet when feelings will deepen, what if the secrets they both hold tight to their core.

The author grants us a beautiful coming of age tale, as both will have to leave behind their past fears or pains to build a new path, but without trust in the other, it might be an arduous and lonely journey. This tale brings to life complex and layered characters, Maggie has to learn who she is outside her family’s circle, what she longs for while Tobias must decide if his secrets are worth his possible happiness or if sharing his ambitions with the right person can bring solace instead of hurt.
A clever witty entertaining narrative.

“Secrets Between Lovers” is book 4 in the ‘London Secrets’ series by Charlie Lane. Characters from the previous books in the series make appearances in this one, but it’s definitely a stand-alone story. I started reading this book late in the evening, planning to just get through the first couple of chapters and continue the next day. Well, like digging a fork into a decadently delicious double-chocolate cake, once I got started I just couldn’t stop.

Lady Maggie and Tobias are the two lead characters in this well-written historical romance. Her father is a Marquess, a high title in the British peerage. Together, her parents are what we, in modern times, would call hippies or free spirits. They spend all their money on sponsoring different types of artists. Her brothers try to earn money however they can, and Maggie manages to collect secrets about people. She plans to use those secrets to blackmail certain unsavory people so she can get money to help pay the household staff and keep the creditors away. Tobias is charming man with secrets of his own. He hides his heart and his dreams behind a carefully constructed façade that convinces people that he’s flashy and shallow. When Maggie and Tobias encounter one another, there’s an instant connection between them. They start revealing secrets to one another day by day, and eventually discover their own true selves

I thought the dialogue in this book was extremely well done. Every word fits the characters’ respective personalities. The references made within their conversations are appropriate to the time period. The banter is clever, and where appropriate, very funny. Don’t think that this is just a lighthearted story, because there’s a lot more depth to it than that. It’s about how people can project an image to protect who they are inside, how our limitations are often self-imposed, and how we should never give up on ourselves or the world. There’s some excellent, pertinent information about the textile industry during the time period. This was a very entertaining book, and I will definitely be watching out for the next one from this author.

Charlie Lane’s “Secrets Between Lovers: A Steamy Historical Romance” is book 5 in the London Secrets Series. Wary at first about a heroine whose extorting secrets, I found this story splendidly entertaining!

Lady Maggie, also known affectionately to her father as Lady Magnificent grew up with parents totally ensconced in the art world, to the point of near bankruptcy. Being “productively curious” and desperate to help her family Maggie compiles secrets in order to extort money from her father’s guests. Not a great plan and she’s really terrible at it. It does bothers her conscience but she’s she’s desperate. She’s kind, sweet, intelligent and has a sharp wit.

Tobias is a man who’s been hurt before and he hides behind a façade. His wardrobe is flashy and outrageous. His appearance is that of a dandy but he’s really a good and honorable man underneath his outward appearance which is meant to put people off. When Maggie and Tobias are caught in an accidental, compromising situation things are not really as they appear.

I just loved the characters, they were deliciously delightful! Tobias has a wonderful sense of humor which he uses to hide the pain of rejection and is known as a jokester. Maggie was amazing. She’s a clever young woman trying to discover who she is and what she wants from her life while trying to define herself apart from her parents lifestyle. The chemistry between Maggie and Tobias is sizzling and the witty banter between the two was charming. The dialogue was humorous, entertaining and perfect in every way. These are two people so different and yet so alike who come to find that they are better together as one than ever apart.

I really enjoyed the authors writing style. The story is well written and she captivates you from the start. The author does a admirable job of showing how people can build walls, sometimes layers of walls to hide behind as an act of self-preservation and in doing so limit oneself. It’s a lighthearted and fun but emotional story that tugs at your heart strings.

Thank you so much Ms. Lane for this beautiful love story that was such a pleasure to read.

Charlie Lane is a "new-to-me" author but often recommended by my book group, and her covers are gorgeous. This was the first book I read of hers, and you do not need to read the series to know what's going on.

Maggie, daughter of a Marquess and impoverished art-loving parents, meets Tobias, the grandson of an earl and son of a rich textile merchant, at her parent's annual house party for artists. They first meet when she breaks into his bedroom at her parent's house party to snoop among his belongings. When they are caught together, Tobias begins to pursue Maggie in earnest and refers to her as his "pocket princess." Maggie is the regency equivalent of the manic pixie dream girl and mistakes Tobias for an impoverished artist. Though she is drawn to him, she evades him because she wants to be seen for herself and is keen on helping her family recover some wealth to keep their estates afloat.

I LOVED this book. The characters were so fresh and original. Tobias is disguised in that he lets everyone think he is a fop and actively dresses the part in clothing he has designed; only Maggie sees the genius behind his artistry. And Tobias is the only one to see that Maggie is an artist and not just an inspiration for struggling creatives. The characters were also entirely relatable. I went through a period in my 20s where I dated tortured broke published authors, and the author captured their character so perfectly in this book. I loved that this book didn't feel like a rush to read; I took my time with it since there was so much to absorb. Normally, I binge, and then I am on to the next book.

I basically finished this book, then settled in for a long weekend of reading all of her other books, and they were just as good! Her book's characters are fun, compelling, and really stray from the traditional hero/heroine regency romance mold. She's an instant favorite author.

Farce or Historical Romance?

I was not wild about this book. In general, I enjoy most historical romance fiction unless there are blundering errors that keep me from enjoying the story. This was something completely different. First, I felt like the author brought us in at the middle of the story, so much so that I checked to see if this was a part of an episodic series. I actually like it when novels begin “in media res” (in the middle of the action), but that is quite different from starting in the middle of the story! I was immediately put off balance by overly modern language and phrases. While I don't expect contemporary authors to sound like Jane Austen or even Georgette Heyer, I don't want my Regency or Victorian characters sounding like my neighbor next door. Finally, what drove me the craziest about this is that it seemed to be a send-up or even mockery of historical romantic fiction. I think the author tried too hard to make the hero “funny” or a flamboyant character. Again, it might have worked in a contemporary romance, but it did not work for me in a historical romance. If you enjoy historical romantic fiction that borders on farce, you might enjoy this book better than I did.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Maggie and Tobias' Story . . .

Lady Maggie’s parents have allowed their purchases of art to deplete Maggie’s dowry and to allow the estate to fall into extreme disrepair. The family will be left with nothing if Maggie cannot find a way to get more money.

Maggie decides to use their annual house party as a means to find out people’s nasty secrets she can use to require payment if the victim wants to keep them secret. She must do this to save her family. And her first chosen victim is a new guest, Mr. Tobias Blake. What Maggie doesn’t know, however, is that Tobias is an expert at keeping secrets. His entire appearance is a façade; his behavior as a fop and fool is meant to hide from the world the real man underneath. And then he notices his host’s observant daughter looks at him in a way that lets her see the ambitious artistic nature beneath. When Tobias won’t give up his secrets, what options does she have left?

I am glad that this was done as a fun story line or I may have hated Maggie for what she was doing to people. Will she get what she needs at the end of the story? Grab your copy and see what trouble she gets herself into.

This was a new to me author and I have to say I was captivated by her characters and her writing style. I can't tell you how much I smiled while reading. We are treated to the story of Maggie and Tobias. Maggie know her family estate is failing as her father and mother are more lax in taking care of things and spending money on art rather than their estate. Maggie decides to help this matter by blackmailing a wealthy peer during a house party. She is a small slip of a thing and blends in making it so easy to catch scandalous information. One of her marks is our Tobias. This is a man of secrets and none of which he's going to give up. When caught rummaging in Tobias' room, Maggie is caught by Tobias. The next thing you know they are caught in a scandal. Thus ensues a journey of self discovery and learning to trust one another with their secrets. What a wonderful journey it was. I definitely plan on going back and reading the whole series.

This is the fourth book of the London Secrets series. Maggie and Tobias were great characters and their interactions and dialogues were entertaining and at times humorous. They really had good chemistry and I really enjoyed them together. I liked that Maggie was a strong and feisty heroine, willing to do what it takes to help save her family. Tobias is a charming character and puts forth a facade to cover secrets he is hiding. Both Maggie and Tobias have secrets they are keeping. They are both attracted to each other and start developing an undeniable connection. Will these secrets help them grow closer or tear them apart? The author did a wonderful job of bringing these characters and their story to life. I enjoyed seeing them together and their witty banter was entertaining. This is a great series and a great story and I'm looking forward to reading the next book by this author.

I enjoyed this historical romance story with all of the characters. The two main characters were Lady Maggie( Lady Magnificent) and Mr. Tobias Blake.

Lady Maggie or Magnificent family is have problems with money. They are on the verge of bankruptcy because their father and mother likes to send money on painting and also party's. Maggie has decided that its time to help her family with the money problems. She as came up with a way to help solve things. But during a party she is found in a man's room look for secrets to blackmail them.

Mr. Tobias Blake is a care free man. He like his life and the way he does things. He is on a mission to sell silk  instead of cotton like his father does. While at a party he finds a young woman in his room look at his clothes.

This was a fun story to read or listen to. The author has quite a few laughs within the story that were quite funny.

When it comes to romance novels, the hero is one of the biggest factors for me. I want to love the hero. This book is well written, the bedroom scenes are steamy, and there’s plenty of entertainment, but I didn’t fall in love with the hero. This is simply a reflection of my own personal taste. Hero’s are inherently flawed, but Tobias Blake was just a little too insecure, a touch too eccentric, and a bit too flamboyant for me to feel drawn to him naturally.
Nevertheless, Lady Maggie is a delightful little heroine, and the way the main characters play off of each other makes for a generally sunny, lighthearted read.
And we get to take an enlightened journey into the blue collar part of the caste system in historic England. Mostly the world of artists and those who choose to follow their own rules, rather than the ones that are set out for them in highfalutin society.

Loved it! The characters are quirky, the banter light and humorous, and the story is clever, different and entertaining. Maggie and Tobias accidentally compromise each other at her parents’ house party, causing a slight scandal. As Tobias tries to do the right thing and woo her into marriage, Maggie resists, collects secrets and develops her blackmail plan to save her family from financial ruin. Then it just gets crazier from there. This story has familial conflict, eccentric artists, a vindictive ex-love interest, secrets galore, a bear named Sebastian and social reform. This is really well done and shouldn’t be missed!

A satisfying read

I expected just another freebie read--same basic elements, probably a missing editor and tons of types and weird punctuation that make me want to bail.

What I found, however, was a wonderfully complex story with secrets laid bare bit by bit, self confidence and love growing, and even the supposed villains (well, not Celia...) redeemed. The humour throughout was a fun counterpoint to the pain it often disguised.

Quite unexpected and more than a few really wonderfully crafted lines. If I have any complaints, it's that the cover and blurb do nothing to make it stand out as more than "just another freebie read." This is not a formulaic period romance novel.

Lady Maggie’s plans to blackmail someone to save her family. When she meets the handsome new guest, Tobias Blake she thinks she has found her mark. But, Tobias has his own secrets and is hiding behind his outlandish wardrobe.
I loved the development of the characters throughout the story as they learn to open up and eventually trust each other. There is humor as well as bumps along the way but how they interact with each other and face their fears made this a delightful story.
Había querido leer un libro de romance histórico and that's what i got.

Another engrossing story from Charlie. With many twists and turns this will keep you reading and reading. With her family facing ruin Lady Maggie decides to use their annual house party to ferret out secrets and use a little blackmail to provide funds. However, the enigmatic Mr Tobias Blake is not so easily swayed. This story has everything necessary for an enthralling regency romance.

A lovely book to read. Both, Maggie and Tobias have secrets they want nobody to find out about but sometimes all it takes to bring them into open is an observant and determined lady and a rather reluctant gentleman. When they get together, sparks fly. When they finally learn yo trust eachother all things settle down.
Witty characters and a well paced plot. What's there not to like?

Loved the historical part

This was my first Charlie Lane and it won't be my last. I really liked this one. The hero was great, and I appreciated how practical the heroine is.

Also I love the historical/ethical part of art, fashion, and textiles. Very interesting.

I loved this story. There was so much going on with parents, main characters and siblings! I feel our main characters were well developed and though there are stories that can evolve at the end, I didn’t feel like the story was leaving loose ends. The humor, fear, uncertainty felt real.
