Another book that gives you just enough to peak your curiosity & create an appetite for more !
This book is of a series of books that provide interesting details that have been lost to time and progress. I knew nothing about Iran until I saw the American Embassy hostage situation unfold in the late 1970’s. My perception there was of a hot, dry place filled with radicals, terrorists etc. My perception of Iran remains little changed. However, this book presented an Iran, formerly Persia, that had a vibrant & rich history with culture, art, religions and at various times even democracy ! A Persia from centuries past but it’s dusty history has been lifted off the pages and makes one want to learn more of the Persia of long ago. A good read.
With only about 50 pages to tell the whole story of the Persian Empire, I can understand why Hourly History did not include any photos of the magnificent buildings and art. However, as a reader, I encourage anyone who picks up a copy of this book to google "Safavid Dynasty" and take a look at the art and buildings. A thousand years later and they are still beyond belief.
I'm sure there was more left out than included in this overview of such an extensive empire, however, I congratulate the author(s) for putting together a congruent and readable survey. There is an extensive bibliography for further reading.
While some information on Persia is better than no information, this short history provides broad brush-strokes that can be useful starting points for those without any background in Persia and the "Middle East". There is just enough information for the amateur to be dangerous. No strong opinions are given, nor should strong opinions be derived from the brief introduction presented. Allow this brief book to be a marvelous introduction to Persian history by recognizing its broad and introductory nature.
A very good basic history of the amazing Persian Empire. Glaringly, it left out the fact that two independent world religions were formed in Persia in the mid-1800s. First the Babi Faith, which was the precursor to the Baha'i Faith. Both were viciously persecuted by the Iranian government. There are now, in 2021, about seven million Baha'is all around the world. It is an amazing new religion for all of humanity. My suggestion would be at least the inclusion of the fact that two new, independent world religions were formed as the once-great Persian Empire was on its last legs.
Empires we hear about and influenced our life today link back to those Persians.
Art,science architecture, political structures were enhanced here
Ever hear of Islam and the 2 main groups - Sunni and Shia ?
Hear of the major oil industry development and the interference by both Great Britain and the US in their world including the over throw of a prime minister.
As a book which gives brief history on the Persian Empire, this book was the best. It contained brief information on every dynasty in the empire. It also gave information on the architecture and arts of the Persian empire. It's free on Kindle too. This is a great book! I recommend this book to the people who are really interested in history.
Hourly History accomplish a difficult task of narrating history of more than two thousands years of Persia in just a few pages. As in similar other publications, they do it well giving a decent flavour of various dynasties that ruled this region over centuries, ultimately culminating in the Islamic Revolution.
The Persian empire has often been made the evil menace to western culture. But interesting enough that it , China and Japan all ha be e had dynasties for longer periods than the Europeans. Must of what I knew about Iran was ancient Greek history and current events from the New York Times. There was a 2000 year gap that needed to be filled.
A cursory history of a very influential people from the 2500 years ago to the present is this history. Although it is short on details, it fills in the major events in a beautiful tapestry.
Nice summary and a good place to start. Quick, informative background read. You cover the Persian empire but it is a rock skimming across the pond. To really understand and appreciate will require further reading.
A very short overview regarding the Persian Empire and its history. As always I would recommend this book and other books regarding the history of the world!
If you don’t like read long, heavy, textbook like history, then this series is for you. It give a very good introduction into the history of the Persian Empire, it’s growth, and it’s end. I do hope there will be a follow-up to include events since 1979.
Very enriching to read the book. Although Persia is a neighbour to where I belong but I never knew much about it. The history of Persia always fascinated me. This book provided me a chance to run through the history of Persia which is now Iran
