Nobody was prepared, including the world's governments. Yet the threat was always real and the devastation was predictable.

The damage was incalcuable. Millions died at the points of impact. Nuclear Winter spread across the globe. A rapidly cooling climate shocked humanity and all living things ... to their death.

This is more than the story of nuclear conflict. It's about the devastating effects wrought by Nuclear Winter. Our possible future is seen through the eyes of the Albright family whose roots stretch back to the early settlement of the Florida Keys.

While they fight for survival, they trek across a rapidly deteriorating landscape wrought with danger from both the elements and their fellow man.

It was not our fight, but it became our problem.

Knocked-off 0.5 Star - Trigger Warning: Transphobia.

I was actually really hopeful about this book, but about smack dab in the middle of it, Transphobia was just generally displayed like it was nothing. I made allowances in book 1 for the characters right-wing-beliefs, but after all of the Copaganda in both of the books as well as other issues (the gender neutral bathroom scene comes to mind among other things) I just couldn't any more.
I will return both books if possible and will not be continuing with the series.
What a disappointment!

This book goes nowhere fast. After 30 pages of Mr. Top 25 bragging on himself and listing numerous sources he gathered to list the non-stop "facts" as he perceives them, the story starts and then flops almost immediately. Mr. Akart is so in love with himself as an author, he seems to be losing focus on that upon which he writes. He lists page after page of "reviews" concerning his writings, yet there are no names of people or review agencies. Which leads me to believe Mr. Akart writes these reviews himself as he tries incessantly to prove what an amazing writer he feels himself to be. A legitimate review lists the name of whoever wrote it. The world of Bobby Akart is chock full of people who never utter curse words, yet they rape and pillage as they see fit, and it goes beyond credibility of what would be happening in the real world if such an event were to befall us as a people. And perhaps Mr. Akart should move to non-fiction, as he is overly obsessed with facts as he perceives them to be. This book continually tries to move into numerous characters and what they are doing to survive, then delves into some obscure "fact" about something the character sees. It gets old and tiring very quickly and I just got to say, this book is a total waste of time. I used to enjoy his fiction, but when you become this infatuated with yourself, it tends to skew your beliefs into something that makes little sense to those who are appalled at your perceived abilities as you continually throw them in the reader's face. I am done with this series, as this Book 2 is a complete waste of time. Mr. Top 25 occupies no such listing spot in this reader's eyes.

The bombs stopped falling but the massive amount of radioactive debris was forced high into the atmosphere.

Nuclear winter was beginning around the world as the skies darkened from the smoke and dirt in the upper atmosphere. The entire west coast from the Pacific into the mountain ranges was on fire. The cold from the Pole roared down across the western plains bringing subzero temps and brutal winds. The pale thin sunlight couldn't puncture the clouds of refuse and dust and did little to warm a dying landscape.

Peter Albright was making his way south from Virginia aiming to reunite with his family in the Florida Keys. On a bicycle, he was makings decent time hoping to join Hank, Michael and Jessica on Driftwood Key. Hank and Lacey McDowell and their son Tucker were making their way cross-country from California to make it home to their family in the Keys. The travails of the two groups as they make their way home is indicative of any natural disaster - adding to the fight against the weather and landscape was the constant threat of their fellow men. Never underestimate the basic depravity of mankind. What little they had was always lusted after by someone who had less and wanted more. Michael and Jessica had their hands full evicting nonresidents from the Keys and watching out for modern-day pirates who thought the Keys were their playgrounds. As if that wasn't enough, one of their local residents was a serial killer, preying on local men.

As usual, the author has infused a disaster with human responses. The disaster - a nuclear winter brought on by the detonation of multiple nuclear weapons around the world sending tons of debris high into the atmosphere, blocking the warmth and nourishment of the Sun from the surface of a freezing world. The cause of the nuclear weapons being thrown around the planet? Countries with a bone to pick with their neighbors, and once the bombs started falling, the bad actors couldn't resist getting their hands dirty too. The result? North Korea glows in the dark - no survivors expected. Iran and Israel were trying to recover from the annihilation of their major cities. Pakistan and India exchanged a couple hundred warheads on each other. They'll be out of action for a while if anyone survives.

The author is beginning to get a reputation for a bit of prescience as some of his published warnings have nearly come to pass. With hot sweaty hands on the launch buttons, it seems almost as dire today as it was in the Sixties at the height of the Cold War between the USA and the USSR. Scary? I reckon! I love the characters and their interactions, the storyline is 'can't put it down, up all night' good, and as usual, the research and preparation is apparent on every page. This is another great read! I expect nothing less from Mr. Akart!

Hit or Miss

Hmmm. I am going to cut to the chase. Too many subplots. This is book two of three. Nothing connects. The serial killer is too out there.

I am a early fan of Bobby Akart. Read every book. Introduced his novels to my book clubs. Where's the research I normally expect. 2.5.

Nuclear Madness Sets In

Nuclear Winter II: Armageddon is another screaming success. Filled with character driven plots running together simultaneously, your heart will stay in your mouth the entire book.

Covering the two to three weeks just after First Strike and the subsequent all out firing of nuclear weapons, this book tracks the survival attempts of a diverse group of people.

Hampering everyone's efforts are the multitude of effects of nuclear fallout. Initially, there are white hot fires that then produce black, sooty smoke, making it almost impossible to breathe. Then, they have to contend with radiation fallout and lastly, the seriously dropping temperatures caused by all of the smoke in the atmosphere.

Of course, the human factor is a serious consideration. Merely days after the bombs are dropped, people are looting stores, killing each other over scarce food resources and gangs are forming just to gain power over the weaker people.

And woven into all of this chaos, a serial killer is on the loose in our group of survivors in Key West, Florida. No one knows who he is or how he is operating in such a closed community. And as the book ends, they are about to find out. What a kicker of an ending!

Right from the first page the tempo is set for this outstanding story and that is fast! Bobby Akart never lets up the action as we see what destruction has befallen The United States after an unprovoked attack. The bombs have landed, and the result was utter devastation to the country. The country, which was not expecting the attack, let alone set up for one at so big a proportion, is set into darkness and is powerless at this point to do anything but look to Washington and hope and pray that they will have the answers. Washington though was one of the sites hit by a blast and was wiped off the face of the Earth. The president and his cabinet were moved to an undisclosed safe zone prior to the explosions but they are as confused as what to do at this point as anyone else. The president may even be suffering a mental melt down and suffering from the stress of the situation. Not a good thing to happen at this time when the country needs him the most!
Not only is everyone at a loss of what to do but the long term effects are starting to be felt as the sun is being blocked out by the ash and smoke from the fires that had broken out. No one is expecting this newest development and had no idea how to prepare for the cold and the snow. Those in warmer climates are also feeling it, just not at the same level…yet.
The Albright family, which is spread out through out the states are all trying to reach the family home in the Florida Keys. The problems incurred by those traveling great distances is beyond anything they had thought it would be and this could be the end of the line for some of them. As I know from previous books by this amazing author, NO ONE IS SAFE and from the looks of it, that is true with this one too. I’m just glad I haven’t gotten too invested in “some” of the characters as of yet. Time will tell though if Bobby will have mercy on them or not but I’m betting…not!
As entertainment goes, this book rates a high five. The action, the scenes, the character development…all top notch and quite remarkable. From a learning experience, again…top notch. I am always learning what to do and not to do during the scenario that Bobby has written about. His research into each and every topic is so in depth. One added plus in this series is a bit of a mystery thrown in which I am loving! In the mix of all the calamity due to the nuclear explosions, a serial killer is on the loose!!! Talk about a double whammy for those living in the Keys! Yeah! This series has everything you could ever ask for! Destruction, action, serial killer and a mystery! I can’t wait for book three!!!

Akart is simply the best!

WEB Griffin, CG Cooper, Vince Flynn, Brad Thor and Nelson Demille are among my favorite authors. Bobby Akart is right at the top of that list! He is simply one of the best story tellers out there. His books are engaging, thrilling and most importantly educational. All of Bobby's books are full of tips to help you survive both natural and man made disasters.

This latest series will introduce you to a perfectly normal family from the Florida keys who have been spread out across the country like a lot of our own families have been as we've grown and gone out on our own to find our way in the world. The trials they will endure as they try to make their way home after numerous nuclear missiles strike the US is heartbreaking but also inspirational.

You don't want to miss this read!

Finally, a realistic apocalypse book that scratches the itch

I love this genre, if anything because reading apocalyptic books eases my terrors. So often, the ones I read have an emphasis on unrelated things like vendettas and good guys versus bad guys. Gun descriptions and analysis. Not much attention is paid to the adversities that people would actually encounter. Food. Survival. Travel. Shelters. Darkness.

Most of the characters lack access to army supplies such as MRE‘s and bazookas. Only one has a conveniently old vehicle that still operates after the EMP. Everyone has to walk. Get hungry. Cope with a dearth of info from government. A winter that spreads. Oh, it’s really good. I will definitely move forward to book 3 and beyond. Thank you, Bobby Akart, I’ve been learning a lot and I appreciate your thorough research.

Frustrating to Read

I gave up on this book about 3/4 the way through but I did manage to finish it (only because I hate leaving books unread). There were a few things that irked me about the book. Others have mentioned it, but the serial killer element seems out of place, particularly since Hank's police brother, in the midst of a national emergency still obsesses over his capture, while his nephew Peter has already killed half a dozen people, albeit in self-defense, as he tries to make it home. Millions have died - but let's make sure we catch the serial killer.

In book 1 we saw North Korea had attacked the U.S with 10 nukes and yet it appears that the entire U.S. has suffered from EMP - disabling all cars. Really? I understand the electrical grid could be disabled but all cars (except in the keys of course)?

Owen and Lacey with their son Tucker are driving a '65 Ford, but the only smart one among them is the 15-year-old. They are smart enough to remove a cracked radiator hose but it never occurs to them to use duct tape to make a temporary repair and instead Owen (the dad) decides to walk to the next town (about 2-3 miles). Give me a break. Even if they couldn't repair the hose, let it cool off (since it is getting really cold out) fill up the rad with the water they hoarded, and drive the 2 miles. Can't do that - gotta sell more books.

It took the cake when Akart starts talking about seasonal affective disorder caused by the gloomy weather that would depress people - give me a break - the bombs dropped about 8-9 days prior. The seasonal affective disorder is the least of the reasons for people being down - maybe it might have to do with the nuclear war?

Enough is enough - there are two more books but not for this reader.

Somewhat disappointing

Some of this sequel were pretty decent, but significant chunks were like a clanking drive shaft. There's a president falling apart while his chief of staff gradually takes over. There is a man who was set up as quite competent in heeding warnings in the first book and making excellent preparations to survive then suddenly starts making stupid mistakes. The biggest clunker is some serial killer whose path to serial murders and butchery is because he had a normal life until college when he realises he's gay and starts dressing as a woman and seeking unsuspecting men whom he enjoys killing as if he is expressing a gay version of Dexter.

I've known lots of gay men some of whom dressed in drag and a few who were genuinely trans women. None of them channelled Dexter or Norman Bates. In fact, none of the rare gay serial killers of whom I have heard would dress as women.

We also appear to be encountering another stereotype of backwoods hillbillies. Too many cliches are appearing in the story. I wish I hadn't fat fingered my order for the first volume and bought volume 3 already.

An Akart book just isn't about a story. It has scientific information within to listen and learn. If you are an avid Bobby Akart reader you will learn something you didn't know before you read it.

Follow the subliminal education your getting while reading. Are you prepared? Being prepared is NOT just post apocalyptic stories. The winter storm in Atlanta a few years back, the ragging fires in East Tennessee as well as California changed some folks ideas about preparedness.

I love the science, scary as it may be, and enjoy the fiction which with today's intemperate minds, in DC and around the world, one can ponder what the future holds.

Bobby has created some serious novels featuring his "Factual Fiction" and this is yet another adventure to follow.

Great Job Bobby. Your faithful followers absolutely love your tireless efforts.

I used to LOVE Winter...

Bobby Akart never disappoints, and I believe that I've read almost every series and stand-alone novel! He creates characters who become like family, as you live their lives, struggling through the unimaginable circumstances they face. You laugh, cry, grieve, hope, preserver, and overcome some how.

The scenarios are plausible and Bobby's research is impeccable as shown through his use of real-world headlines to set the stage for each series. The only problem I have is waiting so long for the next book to become available! I usually read each one in a day, if not one sitting and I have been known to re-read a previous series while I wait for the next book! Bobby sure knows how to wring the adrenaline out of you, but it is a good tired. Thank you, Master Raconteur!

It’s OK

The story is like a lot of these kind of books, characters don’t have a lot of depth, and they are all a little too perfect. But that’s OK because these are like reading a made for TV movie. Easy reading to fill an afternoon. Like TV though, you have to deal with the commercials. The product placement in this book is obnoxious. It’s not just a multi tool, it’s a Gerber multi tool, a weather radio made by Eaton, a SolArk solar array, a Sawyer water filer, a Schwinn Mendocino bike and those are just a few in about 50 pages. Also the mentions of Dicks Sporting goods, Champs shore stores, CVS, Home Depot, Safeway, and it goes on and on. I realize I might have paid less for the book by dealing with this, but I’d pay more for better writing and less commercials.

The book is good enough to read through the end, but it won’t be one I’ll feel compelled to revisit like other survivalist books I’ve had the pleasure of reading. You get hooked by a family doing what it can to reunite in the aftermath of a nuclear attack on the United States. There’s just something scatter shot about the book, too much of an attempt to throw a lot at the reader, and in the end, the reader suffers because no one thing is done very well. If you made it past the first book, you likely felt curious to find out what happened next. If you’re already there, I say go for it. Don’t pick this up without first reading the start of the series. You’ll definitely want the context. I’m going to push through to the third book, but I’m hoping to feel a little more sizzle in the next installment.

Just started reading book 3 although it's against my better judgement. Stopped after 20 pages. I completed this book #2 but in reality it sucks. It's all good and well blowing his own trumpet and quoting 'facts' at the beginning but his scenario's don't play out well. North Korea launces missiles at America. South Korea and Japan both have strong anti-ballistic missile defences as does the US. Apparently the scenario is set in the future but this is vague and missile defences would be improving considerably. THAAD is deployed in SK. The Ford Bronco would be coming up to 60-70 years in age. So many plot holes. But....the main reason to dislike this series is the serial killer. Why? It's a story about nuclear holocaust and winter. This adds nothing to the plot and distracts from what, if researched properly, attention to detail for the plot and characters, could be a really good and worrying story. I seem to be rambling on a bit but I'm so frustrated at wasting time. Some very bad kindle unlimited books out there with rave reviews that are highly suspicious. This series is one of them.

This continues to be a good series, though I admit that I am not a fan of the serial killer plot. There is enough suspense, destruction and drama without that element (which seems to crop up in the genre for some reason) and it serves to be a distraction. There are three main subplots going, but we get to see the disaster unfolding through the eyes of those who stayed put (and are the destination for the other groups), one person trying to get to safety alone and a family on the move. I did have to smile at the touting of ERCOT and the Texas grid given the collapse of that grid fairly recently. I am looking forward to book 3.

Nuclear Winter 2

First I'll say that I rarely write a review for any author, and if I do, it's quite brief. I just don't like to do them. But with Bobby Akart, I decided to make an exception, as he is my favorite author. As with all of Bobby Akart's novels, this one, along with the first in the series, was well written and kept me wanting more. His characters are well rounded and the amount of research he puts into this, and every novel is amazing. Whenever one of Bobby Akart's new books comes out, I immediately stop reading what I'm currently reading and start reading his new book. That's how much I enjoy his writing. I'm looking forward to Nuclear Winter 3.

Not a bad read...

Kind of the McDonald's of the literary world... the authors politics lurk close under the surface and can be annoyingly out of place concerning the devastating scope of the subject matter... at one point, while attempting to remain hidden from marauding gangs in a mall, a character muses on the labeling of a bathroom as gender nuetral... hardly the kind of thoughts someone running for his life after getting atomic bombed would have top of mind. There are many such instances. Overall though, not a bad beach book. There are 3 in the series, and it feels like there was one book that was divided up to make a trilogy of novellas

Scary stuff

I've been reading ways the world could end for almost two years now. During a pandemic is probably not the best time, because it makes me feel all the more vulnerable, but it's hard to stay away from Bobby Akart's books. That are quick reads, but I'm always amazed at how knowledgeable he seems about each apocalyptic subject. He's opened my eyes to dangers I never knew existed. He's a great storyteller. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because he scares me to death. I'm conflicted. I love his writing, but I'm terrified of the possibilities of what he writing about.

After the nuclear attacks against warring countries people are now fighting to survive the devastating results. On the Keys, Hank Albright is still praying his son Peter, his daughter Lacey and her family have survived and are making their way there. He would be more worried if he knew exactly what they have gone through already. Another emotionally charged, character driven story that will have you on the edge of your seat, turning or swiping pages to see what happens next. Looking forward to the next book.

The saga continues, as Nuclear Winter sets in

Hank and his crew in the Florida Keys hold down the fort and pray for the safety of Peter, Lacey, Owen and Tucker. Little does Hank know of the challenges each of them faces as they travel through the post-apocalyptic world to re-unite with Hank. As always Bobby Akart has done his research and spins a fine tale. I can’t wait for book 3!

Another great book by Smart!

I've enjoyed Akart's books for years. This book is just another in a long line of quality reads. This story about Hank and his family brings the story of nuclear winter into focus on a level that you can understand easily. As Stalin said, "one man's death is a tragedy, a million deaths is just a statistic". You have have something in your range of understanding to realize a tragedy of this scale.

Very good follow-up to the first part f this story. Set up well and the characters are well thought out. There’s not much that I would call new as regards the genera, but I really like the authors style and character development. One part is a bit different, and it’s the lead up to the current situation. At times it seems a bit slow, but. Arches up rapidly. Looking forward to reading the next chapter.

Another frighteningly realistic portrayal of the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust...

As the realities of a big nuclear fallout, nuclear winter and loss of food raising capabilities begin to sink in, the harsh realities of survival in a post nuclear war country begin to sink in and man's inhumanity and depravity begin to unfold....And it his not a pretty or helpful sight....the elements are only factor of the strugfl free.... Exceptional read!

A different apocalypse experience

Bobby Akart has turned the apocalypse on its head with TEOTWAWKI from a "small" nuclear conflict between India & Pakistan with some additional nukes targeting the US from North Korea & the US response. Can people survive as the world dies without sunlight fuelling the food chain?

I have enjoyed another fantastic story from author Bobby Akart! I am really going to need the third book so I hope he hurries with it. I also enjoyed the shout out about the Boone family, Daniel and Squire. Which were characters in another series by this author. Five stars for Mr. Akart.

WOW! JUST WOW!

This is the second book in the series Nuclear Winter. The novel continues the story of The Albright Family as Nuclear Winter comes to America. The struggles, the fight for survival, and the ongoing situations make for a thrilling novel, with sadness at the ongoing situations develop.
