Titian

Rate this book
The Venetian virtuoso A leading artist in the High Renaissance, Titian (Tiziano Vecelli, 1488-1576) was the Venetian school’s greatest painter and is one of the best-loved Italian artists of all time. Titian was highly regarded during his lifetime, and his renown has not diminished in the intervening centuries; so great was his ability to manipulate color, texture, and tone that he is still considered to be one of art history’s greatest technical masters. The freedom exhibited in his pictorial compositions was unprecedented and greatly influential on later artists, notably Manet, who closely studied Titian’s work at the Louvre. This book examines Titian’s evolution, from his early years training under Giovanni Bellini to his later mature work, giving a wide perspective on the life’s work of this legendary master painter. Beautiful Art. Plain prose.

(Lodovico Dolce) “defines the basic requirements of good painting as draftsmanship, powers of invention, and color and tone. He believed Titian to be the equal of Michelangelo and Raphael in the first two instances, and their superior in the third. He also implies, with good reason, that Titian has more in common with Raphael, and gives Titian a further boost by praising Raphael at Michelangelo's expense, claiming him to be Michelangelo's equal as a draftsman but superior in variety of invention and color. […] introducing a competitive element into the equation.”

A short but well-written overview of one of the greatest masters of Venetian painting.
Taschen’s painter series is always a treat, and this edition on Titian is no exception. The author reflects the British tradition of leading European art historical scholarship, with concise yet insightful commentary.

This beautifully illustrated edition helps readers appreciate Titian’s groundbreaking work and understand his influence on later artists like Rubens, Velázquez, and the Impressionists. Highly recommended as an accessible introduction to one of the Renaissance’s most important figures.

Good book & quality pictures. One downside is that it is only about the art and not at all about Titian his life.
