کتاب پنجاه متفکر بزرگ سیاسی چونان دانشنامه‌‌ای گزیده و هدفمند برجسته‌ترین اندیشمندان سیاسی تاریخ اندیشۀ غرب را به نحوی مختصر اما مؤثر و کارآمد معرفی می‌کند. کتاب روندی تاریخی را پی گرفته است تا همزمان با معرفی «انواع» اندیشه، سیر «تحول و تکوین» این اندیشه‌ها را نیز تا حد امکان نشان دهد. اما مسئلۀ دشوار برای نگارش و تدوین چنین کتابی این است که گزینش اندیشمندان طبق چه معیاری باید صورت گیرد؟ از این رو، متفکرانی در این کتاب معرفی شده‌‌اند که علاوه بر شهرت داشتن، جریان ساز هم بوده‌‌اند؛ یعنی متفکرانی در فهرست گنجانده شده‌‌اند که نمایندۀ یک جریان فکری‌‌اند، نه این که فقط در زمرۀ شخصیت‌های سرشناس قرار داشته باشند. برخی جریان‌های فکری دخیل در این تصمیم شامل جنبش‌هایی مانند آنارشیسم، فمینیسم، محیط زیست گرایی و فاشیسم می‌شوند. به این ترتیب کتاب با افلاطون و ارسطو آغاز می‌شود، از توماس مور و ماکیاولی و هابز عبور می‌کند، به ادموند برک و تام پین می‌رسد و با مرور اندیشه‌های اندیشمندانی چون مارکس، نیچه، بنتام و دو توکویل رفته رفته به فهرست جذابی از متفکران سیاسی بزرگ قرن بیستم می‌رسد: ماکس وبر و آیزایا برلین، کارل پوپر و هانا آرنت، هربرت مارکوزه و فریدریش فون هایک و بسیاری دیگر…

If you're interested in political theory and thought from the period of ancient Greece to the 21st Century, but have limited time to get informed about this general topic, this is a great book to read. It examines and evaluates 50 of the most important thinkers (there definitely are some others that could or should have been included) in a concise and easy-to-read way. The way each thinker is presented and his/her contributions assessed is of course not fully objective, but the authors genuinely try to be as objective as possible. The book could also be considered as part of the reading list in any introductory undergraduate political science or political theory class.

One who wants to have a basic and concise introduction to Western political philosophers and their philosophy should read this book. This could serve as a basic guide to have basic knowledge about philosophy and will help you to further understand philosophy in more better and easy way.
Succinct summary of philosophy of fifty most influential western philosophers. Great work by both of these writers.

An approachable book that provides a view of the nature, scope, necessity and challenges (difficulties?) of politics in any group of more than 2 humans! I took my time reading it to allow me to reflect on the philosophy of each individual. For me, it served as a catalyst to challenge my own political views. And since I'm not a poli-sci major, the glossary was a surpise bonus.

On a different line of thought, this book could serve as either medication or vaccination when having to go through the emotional trauma of our hugely imperfect and degenerating democrative process.
