The Setting: Southend-on-sea, Just over an hour from London. A tough and densely packed suburban town sandwiched between the sparkling Thames Estuary and a semi-rural hinterland of fields and marshes. A place where wealth and glamour sit cheek-by-jowl with addiction, poverty and crime. When he transferred to the Essex coast, ex-Met Detective Joe Hogarth might have imagined he was signing up for sun, sea and semi-retirement. But the merry hell of Southend might just have him beat. It’s a good thing this DI doesn’t know when to quit…
Hello folks, My name is Solomon Carter, and I am the author of the Roberts and Bradley PI crime thriller series, The Last Line international thriller series, the DI Hogarth Darkest series and more. I write mysteries, crime and thriller novels and more besides.
I was born in Southend, Essex and lived there for most of my life apart from eventful student days in South London. But my life in Southend was even more eventful still. I ended up working in a string of jobs including as a jobcentre clerk, a book seller, tutor for youth with low skills and low self esteem, mortgage broker, and latterly manager of a food bank which dealt with all kinds of interesting people facing all kinds of eye-opening, jaw dropping problems. Because of these ear-to-the-ground jobs the majority of my novels are set in Southend. In 2016 I moved to North Cornwall because I liked the idea of never-ending holidays - but I also write almost every single day. My aim is to write action-packed thrillers and page-turning mysteries that readers love and my hope is to get better at what I do with every book across each and every year.
I like to give away lots of free books as part of what I do. What I am good at: telling stories What I am bad at: dancing, being patient. What I love: nature, the seaside, adventures Writers I heartily recommend: Lee Child, Ian Rankin, Henning Mankell, Val McDermid, Harlan Coben, Robert Crais. Writers I need to read more of: Val McDermid, Ian Rankin, Michael Connelly and others. Other things I do beside writing: at present I like to keep my running going to balance out the sitting behind a laptop (a habit inspired by Haruki Murakami's 'What I talk about when I talk about running' - a great book). -I am currently doing surf lessons. When in Rome, as they say... -Getting out into nature as the weather allows.
I look forward to hearing from you. Until then I'll keep on writing. Or running. Or surfing. Or chasing my children around the house.
All the very best, Solomon :)
PS if you have enjoyed any of my books, I'd be honoured if you could post a review. Those reviews really do help!
Solomon has the ability to help the reader get right into the middle of the action. His easy reading style is not compromised by adding the usual smuttiness employed by a lot of modern day authors. A totally enjoyable read.
DI Hogarth is a well rounded character, with years of experience in catching criminals. This book was exciting with a murder to solve, red herrings and intriguing characters. I enjoyed reading this story, and look forward to reading more about him.
Hogarth and Palmer are back! And what a storyline. Sue Palmer has her 17 year old niece staying with her. Neither really like the idea but they have little choice in it. Hogarth is in a new relationship with a DOC from a different cop shop and as usual things are rocky! A young Christian girl is found murdered in a beach hut, a food bank run by the church, Sue's niece likes the bad boys writhe food bank! Sue Palmer is not happy.....This is a truly amazing thrilling read, so many people involved, the MP that Joe knows is crooked, the Tower block estate right by the food bank, full of drug addicts, who could be the murderer.... Thanks Solomon once again for an amazing adventure....
Well up to Solomon Carter's usual high standard. Great storyline and characters, fast paced - a real page turner. For new readers to this author I would recommend you start the series at the beginning, however this does work as a standalone book too.
The Deadly Kiss, is a great read, and a gripping story, each book l read of Soloman Carter l cant wait to read they are brilliant stories and very well written. Keep them coming Soloman.
I have loved all the Hogarth books except for this one! The books usually flow quickly with humour and believable storylines. This one was slow to get going but quick to end. There was little of the Hogarth humour but lots of his dour side watered by whisky. I have to say,Solomon, that this was not your best. Let's hope that the next one goes back to the Hogarth we all know and love!!
This is a very gripping take that moves at time fast pace. Hobart is a dogged investigator who has seen it all and for the most part doesn't like what he sees hence his determination to uphold the law.. Palmer is a perfect foul coming at the investigation from a different angle. First class story.
This, as with all the other Hogarth books I've read, was pure gripping material. I couldn't put it down! I love everything Solomon writes, and I've even got my husband reading his works, and he's not a reading type. Keep them coming Soloman, along with the Dan & Eva books, I'll keep buying them.
This was an enjoyable (if that's the right word for a gruesome murder mystery) story set in the south of England, where a young woman is found brutally murdered.
Its writing style was fast-paced, its characters reasonable, its plot, if not original, was good.
There was a trickle of humour and a sense of hypocrisy, and Hogarth certainly has his own way of doing things.
I do enjoy the ramblings on DI Hogarth and he really does take you on the scenic route in solving the crime. He does however always get his man but you are kept guessing until the climax. The interaction between DI Hogarth and his team add a bit of interest which also makes you think that perhaps there is something more; who knows. A great read.
Linking the Murder of Helen who worked at the local refugee center run by the church was proving very difficult and not very popular with Hogarth’s boss who now wanted daily reports from him and his DS who was supposed to be acting as a spy on all the proceedings. Gripping story as usual.
I was a little confused as it appears there are other Hogarth books which I read back in 2020, but the character does not seem familiar and this is listed as #1 and #10. Anyway, I did enjoy. good old fashioned police detective work used to find the killer. Will movee on to #11 or #2/
Once again you are hooked from start to finish by a truly gripping read. DS Palmer & DI Hogarth are a formidable team faced with a murderer who is the last person they suspect .
Took a few chapters to get the storyline going, but overall a good read, no Dan and Eva mentioned in this book. Just waiting for the next book to come out now
This book gripped me till the end. It kept on windong and winding making you wonder who dunnit. Well written with believable characters who you just need to follow into the next book.
This book will keep you reading way past your bedtime it is a real thriller. The characters personality moves the story along you keep wondering what will happen next.
