3.5 stars.
🔹 Overall feelings:
〰 I actually really liked it! This book definitely took me by surprise, I enjoyed a lot of aspects but at the same time, some things just didn’t really work for me. That said, let’s get on with my review...
🔹 The characters:
〰 I really enjoyed all of them! Angie was a great female lead and Grayson was also a very enjoyable hero. I also found the side characters to be well developed even though there were many of them. I didn’t necessarily like Angie’s father or Charles but that’s because I always prefer the main conflict to come from outside the family. I definitely would have wished for Angie’s father to be represented differently and I kind of wanted to get a more positive outlook from Charles at the end.
🔹 The mental health representation:
〰 I loved it. Were some things a bit off? Sure. Was it still a fairly good representation of this illness? I personally definitely think so. However, I would just like to say that although I’m a psychology major and studying these different mental illnesses is a big part of my program, my only experience with Schizophrenia comes from textbooks. That said, I do not know, nor have I ever met, someone with this disorder. That’s why I would highly recommend reading other reviews until you find one from someone who either has this disorder or is close to someone with schizophrenia. That way you’ll actually know if the representation is accurate or not.
〰 Personally, I thought it was well done and I think that the author did a good job differentiating between Grayson and his disorder. In addition to that, she was able to highlight the fact that schizophrenia does not make up who Gray is as a person, but that his disorder is just something that he has to live with. Moreover, she did a great job of showing how having schizophrenia could affect those around you and I found that the slow progression of Grayson’s psychotic episode was dealt with fairly well.
🔹 The plot:
〰 Here’s where I had to dock a few stars. This book was actually going really well for me at the beginning. However, it did not need to be this long (it’s not even that big of a book but it certainly felt like it was at times). So where lies my biggest issue? With the fact that there were so many side plots. This novel is supposed to primarily be dealing with Grayson’s struggle with his disorder (and it did) but I don’t understand why so many side plots were thrown in as well. Here’s what we had to deal with throughout the book:
- Grayson’s decline and his psychotic episode,
- Charles and his threats,
- Angie’s relationship with her father,
- Alma and her whole story,
- Danny and his threats (possibly the most unnecessary addition to this novel in my opinion),
- Kristin and her bad mojo,
- Peter, his fights and his principal at school,
- Digicast, the company and their leader...
〰 Please keep in mind that all of this was happening at the same time in the book, so it’s not like we got to deal with each problem separately. We rather had to follow all of this at the same time which, to be honest, felt exhausting and unnecessary. Danny and Alma’s side story in particular was so useless that I just don’t understand why it was even added. I understand and appreciate that it gave us further insight into Angie’s personal life (an aspect that, for once, had nothing to do with Grayson) but it still felt like it was thrown in there out of nowhere since it didn’t add any real value to the plot.
〰 Moreover, I could actually see the twist with Kristin and Charles from a mile away and I can’t really say that I enjoyed it all that much. If I’m honest, I wanted Grayson’s mental decline to be unprovoked, not a result of scheming and outside sources. Having an episode like that is completely normal for someone with schizophrenia so I would have liked to see it happening for no reason instead of having it be this whole big plot against Grayson and his family (the very thing that he’s literally paranoid about).
〰 Finally, I really hate when the main character is given the chance to see what’s going on around her but then the author makes her wait for no reason. What do I mean by that? Well, I just don’t understand why Angie wouldn’t pick up Matt’s phone calls. Her reasoning was stupid and had she done so earlier she would have noticed her husband’s psychotic episode sooner. Also, the way she received the envelope from Matt but wouldn’t open it for so long just irritated me to no end. I hate it when the characters are given the chance to figure things out sooner but decide not to do so simply as a means to prolong the book. The author could have simply not had Matt call Angie and could have made sure that the latter didn’t receive the envelope so early on and I wouldn’t have been this annoyed. I don’t know, it might be just me but when things like this happen in a novel, I just find myself getting annoyed at the main characters.
🔹 Previous installment:
〰I don’t really look at this as a romantic novel to be honest. This novel mainly follows Grayson’s mental health and not his love story with Angie (which I definitely preferred cause the mental health aspect was much more interesting in my opinion). You still get a lot of cute and sweet moments but that’s not the main focus of the book. Moreover, Angie and Grayson’s love story was actually established in the previous installment so the focus here is not on their developing relationship in any way. You actually start the book with them as a married couple with kids; which I surprisingly kind of liked. There are many references made about events that happened in the previous book (which I did not read) but I’m glad to say that this is still a complete standalone. You do not have to read the first book to be able to understand this one and enjoy it.
🔹 Final thoughts:
〰 Having said all that, I’m still really glad to have read this book. The writing style was great and the story was enjoyable. I wish a few things were done differently but I still think that the author is definitely talented and worth checking out.
”He was funny, protective, intelligent, kind, sexy, layered with such complexity that his schizophrenia was only a fraction of who he was.”
.
Huge thanks to the author for reaching out to me and offering me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
➡️I had told the author that I wouldn’t be able to get to this anytime soon but I’m so glad that I actually got to read this novel within a week and a half of its release!!
