The Proxy Brides #60

A Bride for Shane

Rate this book
Her brother’s bad-boy best friend needs a wife!

American heiress and champion horse breeder, Lacey has always been in love with her brother’s rough-and-tumble, bad boy best friend. She doesn’t care if Shane is a pauper and a convicted thief, so when she learns he is sentenced to death, his only reprieve hinging on a proxy marriage, she doesn’t hesitate to sign the papers, ship her horses, and head West.

Proud and fiercely independent, Shane hates being beholden to anyone almost as much as he hated being in prison. Years ago, his best friend’s twin sister threw herself at him, a temptation that drove him West to seek his fortune. Now it seems someone wants to take that fortune away from him. Why else was he tried and found guilty for a crime he didn’t commit?

Aware he owes Lacey his life, Shane guards his secrets, determined to find out who framed him so he can prove his innocence and annul the marriage. Then a dead body shows up on their ranch, making it obvious that Shane’s goals clash with whoever wants him out of the picture permanently.

Lacey has no intention of accepting an annulment, and schemes to make their marriage binding in every way. A move Shane finds impossible to resist, even though it means putting them both in harm’s way, and possibly landing him back in jail. Lacey’s move to solidify their union pits the couple against the villain and reveals the secret Shane is hiding. Why has he deceived her? What else is he keeping from her? And how will it affect their future?

Kathleen Lawless blames a misspent youth watching Rawhide, Maverick and Bonanza for her fascination with cowboys, which doesn’t stop her from creating a wide variety of interests and occupations for her many alpha male heroes.
Her hero, Steele, in HER UNDERCOVER COWBOY, is a modern-day cowboy, so when she was wooed by a man called Steel— while he’s not a cowboy, he is an alpha male and her forever hero. Which is why all of her stories end Happily Ever After.
Not that she can ever stick to just one genre. So many stories to tell—never enough time.
With over 30 published novels to her credit, she enjoys pushing the boundaries of traditional romance into historical romance, romantic suspense, women’s fiction and stories for young adults.

Using the Loophole . . .

Lacey Collins knew Shane Blackman for many years since he was her brother, Luke’s, best friend. Lacey had shown her interest in Shane, and he immediately went out West to avoid her and to make it on his own. But someone framed him for horse stealing and Shane went to prison. He would be hanged unless they invoked a loophole in the law where he showed he would become a trustworthy person by marrying and settling down.

Luke told Lacey she could help if she would marry Shane by proxy. She not only filled out the paperwork, but she and her horses headed West! Lacey was still in love with him and would gladly make the marriage work.

Shane needed to find out who was framing him and why. He felt uncomfortable involving Lacey and Luke. Yet seeing her again, he was impressed with her. Could she possibly make him see that they would be good together? Could she convince him they could make their marriage a good one? Will they figure out who is trying to ruin Shane?

I enjoyed this story line with the touch of mystery and was happy to see Lacey get her second chance with Shane. If they can figure out who is working against them, they can put some effort into making their marriage work and find a HEA.

A Proxy Marriage To Save Her Brother's Friend

Cute Proxy Marriage story in the Proxy Brides Series. This series is multi author and each book seems to be a stand alone story. This was a quick read with a happy ending. I liked the characters and the western story.

In this story the couple that is to get married by proxy actually know each other. Lacey Collins had know Shane Blackman for years as he was the good friend of her twin brother Luke. When Lacey was told that Shane had been arrested and was going to be hanged for stealing horses, she was upset. She had feelings for Shane that went back to when she was younger. Luke told her that Shane could be spared by a loophole, giving him time to prove his innocence, if Lacey would help him. The loophole was proving he would turn his life around starting with taking a wife. Since Shane didn't know any women, Lacey agreed to marry him by proxy followed by moving west to live with him. Lacey was hoping she could convince Shane to make this a real marriage.

Shane Blackman didn't want anyone's charity and he had actually gone west to avoid the temptation of his best friend's sister Lacey. He had wanted to prove himself and things had been looking good for him until someone accused him of stealing horses. Now he was beholding again to the Collins family as they got him a lawyer and set up a proxy marriage with Lacey. Seeing her again and really getting to know the grown up Lacey gave him a new impression of her.
She wasn't the spoiled rich heiress he had thought but actually a strong, hard working and caring person. Will Shane discover he wants more than just a fake marriage to Lacey?

There's a lot of mystery in this story as they try to discover who actually stole the horses and who is behind trying to continue to discredit Shane. Lacey and Shane have to work together to uncover the plot to destroy him. There's also some secrets that need to be revealed that may explain what's behind the plot.

A Bride for Shane by Kathleen Lawless is a quick, fun read. Since childhood, Shane has always believed he isn't good enough for rich girl, Lacey. That sentiment still holds true when he needs her to become his wife and help him out of a jam. Lacey has loved Shane for as long as she can remember. She even told them when they were teenagers, but he rejected her. Still pining for him, she agrees to become his bride, and vows to make him love her without making a fool of herself a second time.

I love Lacey and Shane. Not only are they perfect for each other, they are a fun couple who tug at the heartstrings and make the reader smile. Their respect for one another and for horses is evident throughout the story. Their interests are similar and their love for one another shines when they face off against a force determined to destroy them and the home they're trying to build. Pick up a copy and let Kathleen Lawless tug at your heartstrings she she did mine.

Will he allow love in his life?
Lacey has always cared for Shane yet he hurt when he turned away from her and moved west. Now he is in a pickle and her twin wants her to help him by becoming his bride. It is a quick book and by about chapter six, you will have a pretty good idea of who the bad guy is but not the reason that does not come till the end. This is a love story and mystery combine and it was an excellent book to read. The characters were great and I really liked Lacey and I liked that Shane got it together and realized what he had married to Lacey. Kathleen Lawless has written a wonderful tale that I am happy to recommend. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

Shane had gotten in a bit of trouble with the law but had a way out until they could prove his innocence. Lacey had always been in love with Shane but as the little sister to his best friend she was definitely off limits and the one time she threw herself at him, he rejected her. Now, she had to save him by being his bride. But what Shane and Lacey soon realized what was supposed to be a ruse between them was anything but that. When danger, love, lies, intrigue and deception became involved their fast and exciting romance became very interesting.

Shane has been framed as a horse thief which means he'll hang, a way out is for him to marry and then repent at church, after a large donation, this happens.
Lacey has known Shane for years, he's a friend of her brother. She steps in as a proxy bride and goes down with some of her horses to act as a wife, hoping that Shane will accept her, as she's had a crush on him for a while. But someone is keen for him to be killed, are there secrets he's hiding?
A great romantic suspense read from Kathleen

When Lacey finds out her brother's best friend, the one she's been in love with for years, is in prison and sentenced to death unless he marries, she agrees in a heartbeat to be his wife. Shane worked hard to make it good in the west, but he's been framed as a horse thief and found guilty for a crime he didn't commit by someone who doesn't want him to succeed. He and Lacey will have to pull together to save everything he's worked for.

Lacey will do whatever it takes to free her brother's best friend Shane, the man she's had a crush on for years. I wasn't sure how she would handle being in the west without all the modern conveniences and help she's used to, but she has a lot of determination willing to learn new things and take on the task of laying traps for the ones who framed Shane as a horse thief. They each had their feelings and suspicions about the culprits as bad things keep happening to them.

Are mysteries and secrets the same thing?

Shane and Lacey both have secrets but they are wary of sharing, worried about rejection and judgement. If only they were honest with each other from the start, their fears would be laid to rest. They are stronger together and that is the only way they will defeat the threat that seems determined to destroy them both.
A sweet second chance book which I read on Kindle Unlimited.

This is a good book.

The book is about Shane and Lacey. Shane has been convicted of a crime he never committed and has to marry by proxy. His best friend from back East sends his sister as Shane Proxy Bride. Lacey is more than happy to become Shane Proxy Bride since she has been in love with him while growing up together on her family ranch. The author did a good job of bringing these two people together with a wonderful happily ever after.

This was a wonderful, clean western romance with lots of mystery.  Shane  and Lacey make a wonderful couple and their love for one another was great.  I wish the epilogue had been longer though.  If you love old western romance, I highly recommend this book.

Proxy brides are one of my favorite genres. I try to imagine the amount of faith and bravery to head west knowing you were already married to the stranger at the end of your journey. Now in this case, Lacey already knew (and loved) Shane, but even then she had no idea what would lie ahead with him being found guilty of a major crime. Kathleen Lawless keep my attention and interest.

He is in trouble

Traditional proxy bride with a twist. They've known each other a long while, yet he doesn't feel worthy of her affection due to her worth. But he's in trouble and she doesn't care if he only has two nickels to rub together, she still loves him.
