Pippin is a kitten who hasn't yet learned to purr. Worried, his parents take him to the doctor--""""If this doesn't change soon we may have to operate,"" says Doctor Dog. Operate? No way, thinks little Pippin who decides to take things into his own paws. It isn't until his parents realize what their kitten really needs that Pippin purrs in relief. This book will strike a chord with parents and children alike in our ever-faster-moving world.
This was a heartfelt story and the illustrations were uniquely done. At the heart of it all, the story of Pippen the kitten who couldn't find his purr was that of family and what happens when parents get too caught up in the hustle and bustle of life. Pippin's mother was "HurryMama" because she "had so much to do, she was always hurrying and running around." His father was "LaterPapa" because he would always say, "Later, Pippin" as he was a workaholic. Pippin journeys to learn to purr but it's not something other animals can teach him. The ending is perfect.
Generally, I don't care for cat stories in which the cats wear clothes, i.e., act like people. However, this was such a sweet story that I found myself drawn into it despite the uncatlike apparel. Little Pippin searches all day for someone who will teach him how to purr. One of my cats had kittens 4 weeks ago, and just yesterday I was petting the smallest one. I could tell it was trying to purr, but just couldn't get the little engine revved up. So cute! Reading this story reminded me of that. The illustrations were appealing, especially the last 2 spreads. I think I'll have to get this one for my collection of children's cat books!
