The mist is rising so lock your doors and stay inside, for the monsters have returned. On a dark and ominous night, at the edge of the Abyss, Agathe rescues a baby from a monster that should have been extinct. Gravely injured in the process, the elderly Agathe is rewarded by having her youth restored.
But that’s only the start of the strangeness. The child she saves is far from ordinary. Belle has a unique and wondrous magic that must not fall into the wrong hands. Like those of the King. Everyone knows the monarch steals those they called the Blessed—those with the purple eyes. Supposedly, they are the only thing standing between the Kingdom and the rising mist.
As far as Agathe is concerned, they’re victims of the King’s lust for power. What is the King really doing with the Blessed and their magic? To discover the truth, Agathe must insert herself into the court of the enemy. Unfortunately, things are worse than they seem.
Can Agathe embrace destiny and not only save herself but also the Kingdom?
Hello, my name is Eve Langlais and I am an International Bestselling author who loves to write hot romance, usually with werewolves, cyborgs or aliens .
I should warn you, I have a twisted imagination and a sarcastic sense of humor something I like to let loose in my writing. While well known for my shifter stories, I am also extremely partial to aliens, the kind who like to abduct humans and then drive them insane...with pleasure. Or do you like something a little darker, more serious? Then check out my cyborgs whose battle with humanity have captivated readers worldwide.
Such a good story. Loved that "old"women are the heroines. Not the ' young no experience in life but thrust into an unknown situation and figure it out with their power.' This is about 3 old women who each have a unique perspective and work together to try and uncover the history and mystery of the mist and magic. Lots of great characters and of course Belle who is so unlikable.
I really struggled with this book. Normally I enjoy this author a lot. But this book seemed to lack necessary world-building. I did enjoy parts of the book: the three "old women" and the "brat" and the idea of fighting monsters and magic..etc. But there wasn't a lot of information about why it was happening, they glossed over monster fighting, didn't really explain the magic well, time jumped forward quite quickly...
I think I will have to do a re-read and see if I change my mind.
I won this book in a giveaway and wasn’t sure what to expect and I must say I was blown away! This is completely different from anything I have read lately and I couldn’t put it down. I seriously read it in one sitting! I never knew what to expect from one moment to the next. There were twists that I didn’t see coming and they caught me completely off guard. This is an intense and extremely interesting action filled book that you make sure to read every word because you don’t want to miss a thing! Highly recommend this!!!
This story was hard for me to read. I had put it down around the half way mark and didn't pick it up for a couple of weeks. Once I picked it back up, I finished reading it in one go. It's set in a time frame that is similar to King Arthur's. I enjoyed it once I started reading it again.
Something about the world building in this book is both fascinating and yet feels completely fake and overly dramatic to me and it's probably because I want the main character to ask a fuck ton more questions and she refuses to be curious enough to do so. So minus a star for not having a high enough IQ to ruin everything Langlais is trying to set up, I guess. 😅
Nothing like Eve Langlais' other books (no comedy). Different genre, paranormal romantic Swords and sorcery instead of paranormal romantic comedy. Very good read!
Great narration by Carly Robbins. She got the feel of the book and she was a joy listening to.
I really enjoyed this. And I keep thinking about what will happen next!? Eeek, I want to know now!
The world building was not the biggest, but, there is no world. There is their land, and the mist around it. The mist filled with monsters. So intriguing. Why, how? When? Is there more? And the main character Agathe knows nothing, so we know nothing. Except that there are monsters in the mist.
As for Agathe, ok that end had me reeling, like what?! WHAT?! But first, we have an older heroine. One that will learn how to fight, cos hello, monsters. Years pass, and I can't spoil, but yes, I mean that ending! I did not see that coming. I wish I could say more,
Oh and she and her fellow sisters of the shield save a baby. One with purple eyes. Those children are collected and sent to the king because they have magic. And again, I am dying to learn more about the king and magic. She desperately wants to find out what happens with the purple eyed ones.
Monster fighting, some passion, tense banter between two who need to get down and dirty. And questions that made me want more and more. Just one chapter more.
I really want that second book now. It was so light and easy, fun and intriguing. Interesting characters and just the right amount of secrecy that made me want more and more.
Oh and nothing like that other pnr series I read by her. That was humour and sex. This was a totally different feel. Fantasy, secrets and magic
This is very different to the books I've read from this author but quite interesting. It's what I would consider an adult dark fantasy?
The book started with a baby girl being left outside an Abbae occupied by a trio of old ladies, there to be the last bastion against the rising mist from the Abyss. The elderly Agathe was gravely injured when saving the baby from the monsters coming out of the Abyss and was miraculously healed and her ageing reversed by the baby. Together with the other two Soraers, Hiix and Venna, they were determined to raise the baby girl they named Belle and keep her from harm.
Then there's a time jump where we meet the three Soraers now living in another Abbae, Agathe is now middle-aged. Belle is grown and have purple eyes, a sign of being one of the Blessed, who are all required to be sent to the King to "serve" him. Belle is eager to go but Agathe and the others are suspicious of the King's edit, until the arrival of the King's General Knight Maric and his men and made the issue moot.
During their journey to the King's Citadel, Agathe and Maric began a relationship until something jolted her memory and we get a BIG revelation and a cliffhanger.......
Overall, I did find the world quite absorbing and with the cliffhanger, I went straight into book 2 Lying Mirror.
In this 1st book of the Mist and Mirrors Series we find Agathe, Venna and Hiix ,the 3 Soraers who are tasked with protecting the humans from the monsters that rise from the mist at the rim of the Abyss. Asked by the Goddess to protect the children with the purple eyes and their magic, the 3 Soraers find themselves in more danger than they ever had to deal with. Finding out the truth about the King and his stealing the magic from the purple eyed children might just get Agathe and her fellow Soraers killed or locked in a cell but they are determined to get answers. This book was very intense at times.
I’m going to say this was rounded up from a 3.5. I had such high hopes for this book but in the end I was frustrated. I would have loved for the women to remain old and still be part and fighting instead of getting a “youth boost” every so often. The relationships felt a little forced and out of place in I’m honest. I’ll probably pursue the series but, not right away.
What was that ending???? Wow, I was really enjoying the story, not sure where it was going or what the outcome could be, but happily along for the ride. Everyone was interesting, you’re never sure of people’s intentions, mysteries and monsters everywhere, so yeah, I wanted to be there for what happened. Then, in the last few pages, it all tips everything over, and I need to re-think it all!
I'm hooked. This one HAD EVERYTHING. Fantasy setting, mystery, kickass heroines, light romance, horror/danger, quests, BFF sisterhood/found family, and !!!
I have to admit I'm not sure if I will continue with book 2. I skipped pages and chapters. Maybe because this is definitely different to other books by the author.
Writing is good, had a couple misspellings, took a bit to get into the story is was kind slow, but by mid book picked up more…epilogue was amazing….preordered next book
This was very different from what this author usually writes. It's not a romantic comedy. Mist Rising is the first of three books in this series. It is mostly an introduction to the characters and the world. It is a frightening world with hope running out. Strong female characters. There is mystery and suspense in this fantasy. I enjoyed this book and will continue the series.
