On the night of his birthday, sixteen-year-old Dylan Harmon discovers he has pyrokinetic abilities when he accidentally throws a fireball across his bedroom in a fit of anger. As far as he knows, he's the only person in the world with these powers, and he knows he must keep it a secret.
Two years later, with a stint at a volunteer firefighter academy under his belt to hide his love of arson, Dylan has his powers more under control. The only person who knows what he can do is his best friend Cap. But as his powers continue to grow stronger, Dylan struggles to keep the world from finding out what he can do.
Soon he learns that he's not the only one with superpowers, and there are others that have been keeping their own abilities hidden. And not everyone is planning to use their powers for good.
There's something magical about getting lost in a good book, reading without any sense of the outside world, only to look up and realize it's 3 am and maybe I should rethink my life. A good book to me is one that makes me stay up until it's over with, and upon opening this book for the first time I knew it was going to fit that bill. I read 100 pages without stopping. Through a bizarre set of circumstances, I had no time to read for almost a month, but when I finally got around to it, I read 250 pages, gasping and cheering and playing along in my head until the very end. Filled with its witty puns, movie references, and fascinating, and definitely unpredictable plot, I can not recommend this book enough. If you are a fan of the movie Sky High (or heck, even Frozen), this is a book for you. I anticipate with pleasing expectation my next read though of this book, and the hopefully many more to come!
I swear this book had my heart as soon as Warren Peace from Sky High was even mentioned. This was a really fun read! I can't wait to read more from this author in the future :3
(To Allison Chernutan: I'm so happy I bought this book from you in Metrocon this year! I'm a lil sad I couldn't get to it sooner, but I'm so happy it's got a proper place on my bookshelf. You really helped make con memorable, and this book is going to be living rent free in my head for quite some time ❤️)
This book was written by someone I went to college with. I am not really the target audience but it was fun to experience her version of the young adult classic tale exploring the collision of high school drama and supernatural abilities. The writing is engaging and easy to read. Would be suitable reading for teens that enjoy Marvel movies.
A completely surprising journey! This novel turned from a origin story, to a romance, and a literal page turning thriller that I couldn’t put down. What makes me more excited is that it’s just the beginning!
