Doing gentle towards me is not something I did, for many years of my life. Once I realized that, the insight that I didn’t do gentle towards myself wasn’t enough for me to actually change my way of being and doing in the world, so I started playing, practicing and experimenting with what it might look like. A way to reprogram myself, really, from doing hard to gentle towards myself.
So I started to experiment, finding ways to be and do, think and act, that helped me learn how to do gentle. What I learned from these experiments of mine can be found in this book.
It is my sincere hope that you will find help as well as solace and, most definitely, hands-on ideas of ways to flavor your being and doing in the world with a touch of gentle. However, if you are anything like me (… even if you aren’t) adding a dash of with an edge to the doing gentle sure spices things up in the most exciting way. So this is me hoping you will hook arms with me, and start doing gentle with an edge.
Doing Gentle with an Edge is a balanced take on how to cultivate a relationship with oneself. There are various ways one can go about dealing with oneself and showing up in the world. One can be easy going to the point of overlooking and bypassing responsibility or the other way is to be harsh to the point of being like Hitler. Helena Roth points out the middle path. It’s not stark black and white rather there are many shades of grey in between. The book uses a gentle and friendly tone and the Author shares her personal moments and insights of how she came about doing gentle with herself. Each section has helpful prompts to inspire the reader on their own personal journey of doing gentle with an edge. The book also points out many helpful resources, such as, books and podcasts for further discovery. This book is a marvel that I will refer back to when I need that extra bit of encouragement from a kind and loving friend, who helps me befriend myself.

This book contains years of experience and advice wrapped up in a small-easy-to-read package. For every chapter, there is a prompt, so you can reflect and apply the idea of the chapter. Don't discount this book for being small, it is enormously powerful. Doing gentle really means you shouldn't be hard on yourself or others. This is a good message and practical advice for anyone to become a better person!
I just heard her audio version What a wonderful performance! I need to hear this book more, it is so powerful.
A compact gem of wisdom, based on a remarkable gift of reflecting upon life’s experiences and expressing those reflections in a beautiful, poetic language. Includes prompts that invite you to reflection on your own.
A wonderful, 2-hour read. The premise of the book is simple: How do we treat ourselves with kindness? How do we act gently towards ourselves?
Most of the ideas are not original. But they are packaged in a concise format that is free of all of the unnecessary story-telling, intellectualization, & sensationalism in most self-help books.
Instead, it is a vulnerable account of Helena's journey, that reads like a set of journal entries. In that way, it reminds me of Marcus Aurelius' meditations.
A tad biased, being involved in the process of publishing this book. I think this piece of work by Helena is so so so important to share with the world. It's a beautiful piece, and I know it'll do a lot of people good.
