- Ann-Janine Murtagh

David Walliams is an actor and writer best known for his work with Matt Lucas in the multi-award-winning sketch show Little Britain. His debut children's novel, The Boy in the Dress, was published in 2008 to unanimous critical acclaim and he has since developed a reputation as a natural successor to Roald Dahl.
I adored the LGBTQ+ representation in this story and how it wasn’t portrayed as unusual or wrong, the characters simply liked each other and nobody remarked about it. I hope to see more of his books include more characters from this community as this was just refreshing to see in children’s books.
As always, this was hilarious and completely action packed with every page. His books only take me a few hours to read, I just get sucked in and imagine myself with these characters - and Raj the beloved newsagent - and go on whatever crazy adventure David Walliams has stirred up this time.
What I mainly love about his books is that within each story this wonderful writer leaves a heartwarming message to all his readers within the pages and for his target audience, I think this is just fantastic.
I will always buy Mr Walliams’ books, for they are truly inspiring and magnificent.
This book is rather emotional and moving, when I first read this novel , I was not expecting it to be the way it is as david walliams doesn't write like this but nonetheless this book is awesome. I would strongly reccomend this book to any reluctant readers as it does not use any too sophisticated vocabulary unlike other books (Demon dentist, Midnight gang etc.) This book holds a strong yet simple moral that we see in everyday life. Two things for those who are reading my review but have not yet read "Bad dad." Number 1: I am not going to spoil the book, 2, you will definetly find this book funny and charming,
Another amazing book written by David Walliams. Every time. His books are funny and exciting and always full of adventure. Mr Walliams manages to write a story that is full of meaning that can teach young ones the important things in life.
The terrible rating is perhaps harsh but it takes into account the expectations around a Walliam's book. Particularly looking at the Boy in the Dress, his first novel, I found it very difficult to like Bad Dad, for many reasons. Being very cynical, it felt like the kind of novel that an established and very successful novelist can bring out - formulaic and basically not very good - but know it will sell anyway. There are so many repeated motifs and jokes. Not always a bad thing - Dahl did it plenty, Dahl to whom Walliam's is impossibly compared - but some of the choices here result in it being difficult to distinguish elements of Bad Dad from his other books. The poor, hard-done-to father/son combo and a couple of irritating yet loving female characters on the side mirrors the cast of Demon Dentist a little too closely. Simply put, it felt like I'd read it before.
The story is typical, a mixture of tough, working class British feel good movie with dark comedy and Raj the newsagent. The dad gets mixed up with the wrong sorts after narrowly escaping a bad racing car accident. The son spies on dad to try and keep him out of trouble and of course everything goes wrong. Then clever son thinks of a genius and improbable plan to save his dad, clear his name and ruin the evil crime lord who has wrecked their lives. Walliam's mixes urban demolition derby with bits of muddy British countryside, along with a few secret hide-outs and posh mansions. There are so many illustrations that it takes away a little the power of the imagination, but even so it all feels very familiar and well-trodden.
The biggest irritance is the exponential increase of font style and size gymnastics as Walliam's career progresses. It's like a child has been set loose on Microsoft word and has to try out every typeface and Wordart they can find. It is so frequent that the whole thing loses its effect and it becomes just boring and annoying. The car chase/crash theme turns Bad Dad into an onamatepeaic nightmare. Aside from the fact that I hate car chases and find them always annoying, here they are described in such a repetitive and unimaginative manner that they become very dull to read. I know a suspension of disbelief is necessary with such a book but I also felt there was a lack of consequence and responsibility in the story - they same irritating feeling that Bond never takes responsibility for the sheer idiocy and danger of his driving escapades.
Nit picking, I know. It's supposed to be fun and silly. Problem is, Bad Dad isn't either. Walliam's has had plenty of hits but this is a big miss. Looking back at the humour and the thoughtful plot in The Boy in a Dress it makes one wonder how a writer can develop in completely the wrong direction. 2
I've only read a few Walliams books, but I seem to have just read them all over again. Elements of The Boy in the Dress and Gangsta Granny in particular.
No successful female role models is my main complaint. There is a very nice vicar, but her church is empty and leaking. The main characters are a lad of nearly twelve and his dad, a veteran stock car racer. I like that disability - in this case the dad is an amputee from early on - and gay ladies are introduced without dramatics and featured as part of normal life. (Though no disability benefit is forthcoming.) As in other books the mother (she's not gay) is ready and willing to abandon her child for something or someone more interesting.
My young relatives enjoyed the adventure and there are colour drawings throughout, on shiny paper, making it quite a heavy book. This all makes it pricey so ideally you'd want kids to share. With car races and unlikely drives - Rolls Royces are heavy and not aerodynamic - and a villainous crime boss leeching off shopkeepers and borrowers, there's excitement and more than a few life lessons. Not too many of the tedious lists this time but tedious and bad poetry. While the use of varied fonts for words within lines is fun for kids, it hurt my eyes and makes the book look scribbled on though new. But it's a kids' book.
David walliams continues to impress. This book had a strong story line, humour and much less lists than previous books. Illustrations really add to it. Great to read a book about a strong father son bond.
This was a very good book. Bad Dad is a fast and furious, heart-warming story of a father and son on an adventure – and a thrilling mission to break an innocent man into prison! would recommended this to anyone needing a very good easy read
My 9yo is a big fan of David Walliams so she wanted me to read this and im glad i did it was so much fun! Filled with great illustrations and very funny, they are the perfect book for young (and older ;)) readers.
I love that Franks dad had one leg and it broke my heart that Franks mum walked out on him but it just makes the characters more loveable that they aren't the picture perfect family. They just needed each other. But maaaaan i would of took lots more of Mr Bigs money for myself haha

Excellent and entertaining book I read to my six year old daughter that had us both laughing out loud. Now we are on to the next book of the same author called Fing and loving that one just as much
No, mitäs vielä?
No podľa mňa keď už spisovateľ píše o tom čo by sa reálne mohlo stať mali by skôr deti navnadiť k dobrému.
One of the worst so far. I think the writer has a strong hidden aversion towards women. In almost every book, a mother-figure character is someone who abandons or neglects children, if not that then abuses them ..
Maybe I'm biased since I'm a mom, and maybe I know from experience.... there are so much more Super Moms out there than Super Dads.
The story itself sucks. It did not interest or touch me at all.
Bad dad is a book I would highly recommend. At first i thought it would be pretty set explanatory but as I got further into the plot, I realised there is so much more than what the front cover and the blurb shows us. Walliams is one of the best authors this century! I hope he will continue writing and acting in the rein-acted versions of his stories. Oh and I hope Raj stays in the books too!
This book might be too easy for most MS kids and the plot is definitely for younger readers. My 3rd grade daughter loved it and begged me to read it.
I have had MS kids read Walliams books in the past and I can see now that they might be accessible, but really a bit too simple for deeper thinking book.
It's a quick fast ride, which can be great sometimes.
Klinci i klinceze, čitajte Walliamsa jer on to stvarno zaslužuje.
This book is amazing. I’m happy Raj is in it because I think it was in one of the books I have read he is not in it. I am kind of like Auntie Flips poems because they rhyme. Would definitely give this a five star and tell EVERYONE to read it.
I really enjoyed it.It is such a fun contemporary book with big sense of humor. But I think that some parts aren't really for kids and children. But whatever it is so great book.👍
