The Debutante Rules #2

Don't Marry the Enemy

Rate this book
Rule # 2: Don't fall for the guy who had you arrested.

Zac Dawson became public enemy #1 the night he called the cops and made a lot of false accusations about my driving skills. His snitching got me slapped with a whole lot of embarrassment and community service.

The worst part? My payment to society means working for the man himself. Trust me, I have grand plans to make it as unbearable for Zac as possible.

But when tragedy turns the world upside down, Zac is the one holding me up.

Now, the clock is counting down to when I return to life in New York, and I need to choose between a booming career in cardiothoracic medicine or the guy I let take hold of my entire heart.

Welcome back to Honeyville, a small-town filled with sassy, strong women and the swoony Southern guys who love them. A happily ever after, guaranteed.

I live in Utah with my husband, our four kids, our dog who thinks she is human, and a rather suspicious cat. A fantasy anthology which included my work in 2018 hit the USA Today Bestseller's list. I have written several fantasy and romance novels and adore both genres!

You'll most likely find me when I'm not writing trying to keep up with the kids, daydreaming, spending time in the mountains, and drinking too much caffeine.

This was a huge change of pace from what I have been reading lately. After copious amounts of insta love, age gap, extra spicy sex books this was like a cleanser to my brain. So if you need the sex in order to enjoy a romance then you will be disappointed. Me? My tastes run the gamut. I can get lost in a tame Betty Neels story or a spicier Alexa Riley. Ok so on to the story…

Jo, 26, the heroine is driving her boyfriend’s car back to NYC after attending a medical thing with him in South Carolina. He booked his flight but not hers and had her drive down and back by herself in his vehicle.(this didn’t make a lot of sense to me because I am sure a different flight would have still gotten her there quicker than driving, so methinks he wanted a car at the conference so they could get around) Anyhoo, she is driving back, by herself and notices she needs gas. She loses control of the vehicle after swerving to miss an animal and crashes into the hero’s garage/gas station. Well, the hero. Zac, 24, comes walking up from elsewhere and she manages to insult him and indicate that she was going to keep driving and would make it right with the owner later(not realizing he is the owner) Her insulting high brow comments gets his ire up and he ends up calling the police after making her think that he was going to help her out. Her arrests leads to an arraignment where the judge sentences her to community service for a month working for the hero.
Basically that is the set up…..

The heroine is determined to do her community service, form no attachments, and get out of this “hick” town with their “redneck” ways.

The hero is determined to make the h very uncomfortable and definitely not enjoy her stay.

The thing is, our hero is one of the good ones and he doesn’t want the h to get all teary eyed. The h starts to realize that this small southern town is full of good, genuine, friendly people. She ends up breaking it off with her boyfriend of 3 years via phone(it was long overdue) The h and H start getting close and she forms attachments to him and his friends.

Overall this is a sweet love story with some drama thrown in to keep it interesting. Some of the drama involves the ex boyfriend who really was despicable. The h has mommy issues which were mentioned and is suppose to explain her initial abhorrence of the South. She was close to her dad, but he ended up having some problems at the end of his life. The H has his own issues. Mainly, he is afraid to get attached after losing his own dad. He hasn’t had a lot of relationships because he doesn’t want to get close and lose his loved ones. He makes a misstep and loses the girl…temporarily. He does the right thing and gets her back. His mom is still around, and she is warm and welcoming to the h.

This is second in a series so we meet the characters from the other books in this series who are friends of the hero.

The wrecking ball

When we're comfortable, it takes a lot to motivate us to change. Jo is about to wreck her comfort zone with an SUV, & she ends up taking Zac with her.

The story is lighthearted but still has enough depth to keep you fully engaged. It's book 2 of a series with an ensemble of characters that I stumbled across after a frustrating book drought, and am looking forward to catching up on the whole series now 😊

*Romance level: passionate kisses, but nothing graphic

Honestly, I didn't think that I would end up reading this series, but here we are. Zac and Jo are so stinkin' cute! Jo made me want to run her over with my car at first, but she was actually pretty redeemable. We need more male characters like Zac. I not once rolled my eyes at his behavior. And if you know me that it is an actual miracle. I also think these books are giving me a southern accent I said y'all today and was weirdly craving sweet tea?

This is an entertaining enemies to lovers romance between Jo and Zac. The author does a great job building the relationship. I loved their stubborn attitudes as well as their growing love. The secondary characters help to bring the story around. It's well written with perfectly painted scenes and is a slow burn romance with a bit of humor thrown in. It's a great read you won't want to miss. Loved it!!

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.

Sooooooooo I hated this.

Emily Childs is so interesting to me because I think I've given her books the full spectrum of ratings which is rare for me. Typically I either vibe with an author or I don't. I'm loving the Rock Star series, and absolutely adored the Little Love series, but this Debutante Rules series is not where it's at for me. At all.

I won't even go into full rant mode, which is my typical response to 1 star reads, because I'm that done with this series.

The bullet points are:
- I can do flawed characters but I need to know the character will be handled responsibly. This means at some stage that character should be faced (either directly or subtlety) with their behaviour. They definitely shouldn't be enabled or excused. Which was the case here. Jo was a terrible person from chapter 1. And it wasn't just her actions it was her actual worldview. And from what I saw this was never sorted out. Even when she started coming around, it was never, 'oh it was bad of me to assume that everyone in the South was an uneducated hick because of my personal mummy issues', instead it was 'these [specific] people are so nice, I can't believe that I thought they were all hicks'. Do you see the problem. She never truly challenged her own world view.
- It was ridiculous that the characters in this book enabled her.
- I couldn't understand the romantic interest between herself and the main guy (can't remember his name and don't care to look it up). When was the last time that someone treated you like actual trash and you had to fight down attraction to them? I'll wait. Exactly. I'm so sick of seeing this trope in books because it is the opposite of being grounded or realistic. The very notion of being drawn to an attractive person despite their horrible personality defies everything I know about life.
- Why was anyone seeking Jo's approval????? She's not a good person, therefore her opinion doesn't matter.
- This plot could still have been pulled off if:
* The author slow played this a lot more, where there was reluctant friendship to more rather than straight into romantic overtones
* People didn't just drop the accountability thing with Jo and her actions

I can't write anymore. I hated this.

I read a third of the book and I’m setting it down. It’s sort of boring and cheesy. The main character, Jo, is not likable. I can’t fathom ever treating people the way she treats them. Zac is too sweet, and forgives her rudeness over and over. I don’t see how he could be attracted to her. If he was funny, that would help me be intrigued or attracted to him. But he’s just sticky sweet and is bending over backwards to get her to like him. And they barely met, but he’s already groveling for her approval.

One scene that bugged me was when he apologized for having been irritated that she was shirking her work by being on the phone in the back room. She bit his head off and acted like it was a life or death situation with her patient on the phone. Give me a break. Her patient isn’t going to keel over because a different PA is treating him. Her pride and self importance are over the top. The reason why this scene bugged me was because Zac actually agreed with her and said her work is more important than fulfilling her responsibilities (and thereby showing respect) in the shop. I can try to remain patient with her if the hero recognizes her pride for what it is, but when he doesn’t, that’s when I get impatient with the story.

I’m sure lots of people will like it- it feels kinda Hallmarky. But it’s just not doing anything for me.

An instant clash or is it crash?
Josephine Graham and Zac Dawson hated each other at first sight. Their two personalities clashed instantly. Of course it didn’t help that Jo crashed into Zac’s place of business. Or that he pressed charges that caused her to serve four weeks of community service at Zac’s Auto Repair. I found it hilarious the way Zac and Jo insulted each other and it only made them more stubborn. Then slowly Jo came to love the town, love Zac’s friends and family, and lastly Zac himself. I loved the cast of characters in this story. They were delightful and well fleshed out so you would recognize them as one of your own family and friends. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and witnessing Jo and Zac’s slow burn romance. Loved the HEA. I have read most of the books by this author and found each one of them greatly entertaining. I’m anxiously looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Serving Time . . .

This is an entertaining romance that has to do a slow burn and simmer before it’s ready (must be close to dinner with my seeing that imagery). Josephine Graham and Zac Dawson hated each other from the start, but that may have been triggered by “the accident”. Jo crashed into Zac’s business, he pressed charges, and she was sentenced to a month of community service… at HIS shop! Their bickering and banter brought the story alive for me. I loved it! When the hostilities settled, Josephine began to fall in love with the town and the people in Zac’s life. Could it even be possible that she might fall in love with Zac as well? And what will she do about her career back in New York?

There is much more going on, so you will want to grab your copy and make sure not to miss anything. Josephine also has a boyfriend back in New York that may weigh into her decision about the rest of her life… or maybe not, anymore.

The second book in The Debutante Rules Book series, this is a cute and fun enemies to lovers romance. Josephine and Zac were enemies from the start and it didn't help matters much when she crashed into his business and he pressed charges, resulting in a month of community service for Josephine. And to pour salt on the wound, the community service was at Zac's shop! The story was really brought to life with the witty and fun, sometimes snarky banter between the two. Slowly and surely, though, Zac started to win her over and they both started developing feelings for each other. Josephine was conflicted though, here she was falling in love with the town and Zac, but she had a career back in New York not to mention a boyfriend. What will she decide to do? An absolutely well-written and entertaining and fun story that I could not put down. I would be happy to recommend this!

The thin line between love and late just disappeared in this fantastic story misunderstanding and preconceived ideas.
Josephine, Jo has had a bad day, and a worse night when she crashes into some old gas pumps at a repair shop. Worse still, the owner calls the cops because she tried to leave after saying she would pay. Of course she is snapping at people!
Zac can’t believe this arrogant woman who just trashed his shop thinks she can belittle him, his business, and his town. Does she think he owes her a break?
When Jo gets community service after Zac presses charges, they end up spending a lot of time together. Can they actually make this work.

Recalled enjoyed these two characters not to mention all the others. She thought she had the perfect boyfriend and job, at least she makes herself think kit but deep down she wants more. Then she has an accident ass met
Let's this man how sparks something deep in her , as well as a dislike. She automatically assumes he is a "stupid southern", and he plays along. That is until the cops show up and she is arrested and sentenced to 4 weeks community time. Over this time she comes to realize the real her and how mistaken she was of her thoughts and ideas, and how wrong she was a out her boyfriend. This is a cute story of film ding love and the real you. I liked this book so much I bought then next one in series

Lol, immediately upon finishing Don't Marry the Mechanic I started this one!

Jo and Zac are the perfect enemies to lovers! It truly starts as hate and I love how much they couldn't stand each other then it slowly turned to curiosity and respect! They both had some emotional trauma to deal with and it felt so authentic the way it shaped them as individuals and played out between them! I really loved reading this one! The banter is spot on and it's fun to see Olive and Rafe pop in and out!

"I didn't expect this when I came here."
"The best things usually sneak up on people," Zac whispers against my mouth, pressing a chaste kiss to my lips before taking the dreaded step back."

This one got me in the feels! I was laughing and crying and swooning! I highly recommend anything Emily writes!!

I did not like Jo at first with her snooty argumentative attitude. She hit the front of Zac's shop and was just going to take off if the SUV she was driving had started. She could have been conciliatory especially in front of the police officer, but no she had to act like the accident and her arrest was all Zac's fault. He was a jerk and wasn't exactly nice at first when she's given community service at his garage, but once he sees that she does have a heart and a passion for helping others as a physician's assistant he changes his attitude and starts to fall for her. I laughed out loud several times in this book. Zac and his friends and family are a riot. Jo's supercilious condescending boyfriend was a piece of work and I couldn't believe what he did.

I really liked this enemies to lovers romance. Jo and Zac are definitely not happy with each other for the first part of this book. Halfway through the book the finally start seeing each other in a more positive light. They end up being a seriously cute couple but there is still drama that needs to be sorted out if they have hopes for a HEA, including her jerk of an ex. The ending of this book not only gives a terrific ending to their story but set up the next book about Dot and I can’t wait to read what happens with her and her ex.

I received an ARC from the author thru Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving my review. Josephine and Zac meet after she runs into his building. He makes sure that she is charged, prosecuted and pays for her actions. Jo is positive that her life cannot get worse at times. She is stuck here with the man she loves to hate instead of going back to the city. These two have enough sparks flying between them to set the pages on fire. The love to hate feelings soon turn into more. Zac knows that if she leaves she will take his heart with her.

Jo and Zac dislike each other from their first crash encounter...well from Jo crashing into is business. But is it really an animosity that has them reacting so strongly to each other? The flow in this story is engaging and the bantering between Jo and Zac is funny and endearing, because their feelings for each grow through out the narrative. I liked this story very much and it was a great to get acquainted with such good characters and a lovely storyline.

I enjoyed this book. Our hero and heroine set out determined to dislike each other, but rapidly discover that they might have been wrong about each other. The relationship develops from there, and fast enough to have me questioning the designation “enemy.” But the story is sweet, they each give of themselves to the other, and struggle to reconcile their feelings. I liked this story better than the first one in the series, and I absolutely LOVE how the author includes the previous characters in this story as real characters and not like an Easter egg 2-d character.

A cute story that starts with an accident that brings two unlikely people together. She is from the big city and he is a Southern country boy. Bless his little heart. A humorous story that will have you rooting for Jo and Zac. Part of the time you may want to shack them and give them advice. That's nothing compared to how you will feel about her doctor boyfriend. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Cute, clean romance.

Great story that held my interest from the beginning. Josephine has a lot of preconceived notions about Zac, Honeyville and all its residents. Zac also has the same about Jo. Watching their interactions is really interesting. And then throw in the “boyfriend” back in New York. Fun read and I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

This book had a wonderfully enticing feel about it. From the moment I read the blurb, I couldn’t wait to read this book. It was even better than I imagined. The characters were fabulously crafted. She was well written in her snootiest and he was just perfect in every way. Add in the snarky dialogue and I was drawn into this story and didn’t want it to end. Loved it.

Small town living. Jo is not herself when she is accused of automotive neglect and carlessness. She is a big city girl and this Zac person will rue the day he called the law on her. Her community service hours are dwindling down but as the time goes she sees a different side to the taddle tail especially when her life starts to spiral out if control

Didn’t totally buy the relationship

I had a problem through most of this book and that I just couldn’t buy that the H fell for the h. She was really uncomfortably stubborn and snarky and in the wrong and unapologetic and it just didn’t make sense what attracted him to her.

Of course the writing was great and if I could get past the relationship believability the story was good too.

Editing issues

Cute story overall. But editing issues were annoying. The story was told in the first person. But every once in a while there would be a few sentences in the third person. It would seem pretty easy to correct in edit as.it really jumps out. I guess ther wasn't as editor or beta readers... shame

Desperately needs an editor

Please, please use an editor, and if you did, please higher a new one. Random places of switching from first person to thrift person perspective. Misspelling important words like Staten Island (misspelled to Stanton at one point). Wanted to give the story a chance, regardless, but I have no plans to read anymore.

Zac the enemy

Jo is serving community time for the damage she causes at the garage owned by Zac. What starts as two people not liking each other changes as they learn about each other.
Beautifully written and the characters are warm and exemplify the type of community worth living in.
