The delightfully comic account of a British couple and their imported cats starting over in a new country continues in Bucket to Greece Volume 10. Unshaven, sweaty and wrapped in a blood-soaked apron is not a good image for our hero, Victor, when he is arrested by the local Greek constabulary. Norman, inspired by Victor’s cookery classes, fancies himself as a budding patisserie chef and cooks up the next expat dinner. Doreen’s nose is put out of joint when the Stranges drag their flatulent dog along and Marigold is all agog to discover who Sherry is sneaking around with.
A couple of random free-loaders turn up with their cases expecting to holiday with Vincent and Margaret, Violet Burke cultivates a lapsed Jehovah’s Witness and Guzim breeds his pet rabbit. A Peeping Tom catches Marigold in a state of undress and Norman’s illuminated traffic cones cause havoc in the village. If you’re a fan of Greek travel and culture then the Bucket to Greece series is a must, with a bucketful of laughs along the way.
I adore these books... although the sexist descriptions of women and calling them “desperate” became too frequent to ignore in this volume unfortunately.
Nothing more than expanded diary entries, nothing really ever happens. If you like gossip and have an I interest in the mundane day to day goings on of a pretentious know it all then this is for you. The title is misleading, not comical at all, the Durells it is not, neither is it an account of triumph over adversity in a foreign country, unless you count not being able to source a ceramic sink a trial beyond compare. It is little wonder it is written with a pen name, Victor being a particularly annoying character who seems to hold all other ex pats with contempt taking every opportunity to sneer at them. Littered with Greek to forever crow about how great he is for learning the language it just comes across a pretentious and serves only to fill the word count. All in all of you want a real book about "up sticking" to Greece try ' Its all Greek to Me"
Having read all 10 volumes so far, I’m interested in the people in this world and so I will continue to read. I’m hoping they continue to have a fun and lively existence.
Really enjoy reading all the adventures of the wonderful European residents in Mani, Greece. Victor continues to capture life in and around the taverna to the point I wish I could join them.
Such a delight to be able to sit down in yet another lockdown and read something so charming and funny. Book number 10 is a wonderful addition to the series. I think I say that about each one - I've really, reallly enjoyed this one.
Well the series is intriguing, such unique characters make up a memorable community you don't forget This book seemed a little short and ended in a cliff hanger moment that just calls for number eleven to be anticipated.
I'm really enjoying this series. 10 books now completed, and I still have 6 more, plus 2 'shorts' in this collection to look forward to. Hopefully by the time I'm finishing up, the author will have another book or two ready to release!
At this point, book 10, Victor and Marigold have been living in Greece for 2 years. It's great coming back to find out more about their daily lives, and the locals too.
Such funny scenes; language gaffes-loved the gem from Spiros early on in this book. Hilarious situations which brought me laughing out loud, and chuckling uncontrollably.
Some scenes in the books remind me of a sitcom-and they certainly give you as much pleasure as watching one of your favourite comedies from years ago (they don't make them like they used to) but this series does recapture something of that sort of era; of your favourite telly funnies, in a moving abroad book. Light, easy, comfy, cosy, comic reads.
What can I say that I haven't said before? Again, it's such a fun series, so easy to read. It's rare that I read a series back to back-(I usually like a bit of a change), but I've only veered off twice in 10 books-and have already got Volume 11 downloaded, all ready to read.
Amusing series.....since I live in the US I find the British vocabulary delightful. My only hope is that Marigold is not as much of a "meanie" as she is depicted. What an egotistical person she appears to be! Love Violet though. Victor, you are a longsuffering guy if you have to put up with Marigold on a daily basis.
Keep on writing, looking forward to enjoying volumes 11 and more! Cheers!
A super-eventful book! It seems like Victor's life is never boring. From his arrest, to the arrival of unwanted guests, to helping Nikos out in his time of need. We meet several new characters: Theo the ex-Jehovah Witness, the new expats Gordon and Moira, their flatulent goldenpoodle Waffles... There are also many surprising developments, including Norman's hitherto unknown patisserie skills and shocking revelations about Violet Burke's second husband.
I love these books and the way they unfold. Life in a greek village with all the delights and humour brought to life. Each book in the series i read leaves me wanting more. It's like catching up with old friends and being introduced to new ones. Eagerly awaiting the next one.
Brilliant! Worth 5 stars. Hilarious and so well written. 'Victor' has a great sense of humour and a clever way of describing the everyday events and characters in his adopted village. Can't wait to read the next book. Now read all ten books so need another one quick !
I love reading these humorous tales of an ex-pat living in Greece. I feel like I've come to know all the people involved and I'm invested in their lives. They're all like family now and I can't wait to read whatever is coming next.
Yet another hilarious volume of crazy anecdotes and disasters in Greece with the added fun of confusing language. I’m off to Greece myself with a few phrases to try out I hope I don’t end up ordering tripe instead of aubergines!
This series of books started well, the early ones were interesting and entertaining. However Victor seems to be running out of material, the frequent dialogue in Greek just pads out the word count and is of no interest to a non Greek speaker.
