Smoke & Blood

Rate this book
Love was never meant for me. I only understood darkness, murder, and loyalty. Death over dishonor was my mantra. After spending five years in prison for a murder I didn’t commit, the only thing on my mind was getting out and helping my brother run drugs through his nightclub while I worked on my dreams. I never expected to be blindsided by Cressida Erickson. I hadn’t seen her since before I got locked up. She was the same golden burst of light she’d been since middle school. I couldn’t take my eyes off her even though everything had changed. I was a monster steeped in death and chaos. She was my brother’s wife and the mother of his only son. I knew if I got too close to her, everything would change… My relationship with my brother would fall apart and I would learn quickly that blood doesn’t always make you family.

I live in KY with my family. While I hold a "real job" my first love will always be writing.
I enjoy lots of different kinds of books, and many different authors. Some of my favorites are, but not limited to, Sandra Hill, Lori Foster, Kelly Armstrong, Stephen King, James Patterson, J.R. Ward and Emma Holly. But I think I would read just about anything with a good plot.

Smoke & Bones is a full-length standalone, taboo, and dark romance.

I saw this book being posted on Facebook and read the blurb, so up to my alley. Cheating is not a trigger for me. Not everything is black & white. There is a whole gray area. So when I see a book is written with gray and messy, I am all over it, giddy-up and count me in. On my dark scale, it’s dark gray.

Julien is a tall, dark, handsome, well-built man. He made all my lady parts go beep, beep, beep. Julien is a brutal machine and does his brother's dirty work for him since they were kids. He cares about few people, his brother Alex, Cressida, his brother's wife, and his nephew. He didn't expect how much has changed in the five years he was in jail and how much isn't what it looks like.

Let's talk about Cressida; I wanted to adopt her and cut the toxic people out of her life; there were way too many. I kept hoping she would get her revenge and find her voice.

I lost count of how many times I was angry at some of the side characters. The pastor and wife, with their judgment and hypocrisy, disguised themselves as parents and the pos narcissistic husband. I loved every minute, and thank you to the author for not shying away from any touchy subjects. Smoke & Bones is well written, and I love this book. I hope to see this book will be available in paperback to add to my collection.

TW: Cheating, violence, drug use, marital rape, various types of abuse, racist slurs, patriarchal comments.

This book irritated the hell out of me. Given the book title and cover and all the trigger warnings I got for it, I was expecting a very dark romance. (Maybe not pitch black, but DARK dark👀)But it was just a contemporary one. I was severely disappointed.

Brief summary:
This story is about a man, Julian aka Smoke, who comes back from prison, to witness his brother Angel (who is a drug kingpin) abusing his wife, Cressida.....who is also Julian's crush since Middle School. Julian believes he's monster (this fact is very important as it's mentioned infinite times in the book 🙄) because he's a hitman for his brother. Will Julian save Cress from Angel or will blood and loyalty turn out to be stronger that love and humanity?

Pros :

🍁 The stort was well-written albeit very predictable.

🍁 The Fmc, Cressida. I don't know why, but I kind of liked her. She was very naïve (so my liking could have been pity but oh well🤷)

It showed me that men can have nervous breakdowns, make the grandest of gestures, grovel and suck your goddamn toes all while lying to your face. I learned that lesson late, and now I was trapped. I spent most of my time drowning in self-loathing.

🍁The eight month old baby, Nasim. Seriously, he was the character with the most passion in the book. An 8-month old carried most of this book for me....I don't even know what to say about that lol.

Cons:

🌵The abuse - I loved the fact that this author chose to represent mental, emotional and financial abuse in this story instead of run-of-the-mill Physical abuse that I can't seem to escape in many romance novels nowadays. There are other types of abuse than physical and they are just as detrimental if not more.....this story aptly showed that fact.

However, what the author failed to take into account was.....the abusive relationship is not always about the abuse. The victim is not always crying or feeling self-pity. Believe it or not, there are good times in an abusive relationship and that's what makes it harder for the victim to believe that they are targets of such a thing. The author didn't show that at all.
Angel (the abusive husband) was always yelling, fighting or belittling Cressida (his wife). Even his apologies included yells, and name calling. That's not how it works. They are either too sweet or just act normal, as if nothing happened after a scene. Abusers don't always revert to abuse.
That inaccuracy in the portrayal of this situation was pricking me like an incessant thorn during the whole book. I couldn't overlook it even if I wanted to.

🌵The sex talk was cringe-worthy! The hero , Julian aka Smoke asks Cress to "use his dick as a stripper pole and bounce on it". I wanted to ask him if I could use my hand as a knife and jab it in his windpipe. 😒

🌵The sudden way racism sprung up from Angel was jarring. I mean, the guy was married to a black girl for 4 years and had a baby with her and he had no problem with her being black all this time.
But when she decides to leave him and he's all " I shouldn't have married a black woman, I should have kept my bloodline pure". No matter that I wanted to torture Angel, the douchebag, for that comment alone .....but it came out of nowhere!!. I got it when he used racist slurs for Smoke cuz he was taught that by his grandma.....but why was he NOW having a problem with Cress?!! Like I said, It was sudden and jarring.

🌵 Cressida's parents- Can I please kill their patriarchal asses?!! Someone get me a torture kit 🔪🔪🔪

“A wife is nothing without her husband to guide her"
Yeah right, Auntie, you please suck on that.🙄

🌵Smoke (the MMC): Gosh, I hated that prick. He had only two modes of operation- either he thought he was a monster or he thought about Cressida and shoving his dick in her. Holy hell man, have some goals in your life for fuck's sake.

He wasn’t the alpha every TV show or book portrayed. Jules was the alpha every TV show and book warned you to stay away from.
He was the alpha-villain

*Scoffs and keeps scoffing for this entire chapter *

Mine and Smoke's relationship in this book went like this :

Smoke : *in a deep growly tone* I am a Monster.

Me : Oh, that's great. I love Monsters. *Intrigued*

Smoke : I am dark and depraved and gnarled. I don't have a conscience. I don't have a soul . I am a MONSTER. You should be scared of me.

Me: *Lust growing in my eyes*. Really? Why do you think that?

Smoke: I kill people.

Me: *Lust grows more* And?

Smoke : *frowns* And?!!! I kill people!!

Me: *frowns* How do you do it? With knives?

Smoke: Knives are only for bad people. Still, I make it quick and non-messy.

Me: That's it?

Smoke : *scowling* That's it? You ask me "That's it" ?!! I even kill innocentpeople.

*Remembering he only killed one innocent man and he was manipulated into doing even that*

Me : *Condescending smirk* You are a monster huh?

Smoke : *growls and slams a fist on the table that suddenly appears in this fictional conversation* Yes!

Me : Didn't anyone tell you not to toot your own horn?!

* Takes him to meet Dimitri Vavilov, Max Bennett, West Harper, Mitchell Rabbit , Daniel Grayson *

Smoke : *rocking himself in a corner* I am a bitch.

Me : *evil smile* Damn right, you are.

I'm glad I culled up this book.

I loved every facet of this book. The intrigue, the history, the characters, the relations, everything! I'm not sure if there's anything in this book that I hate. It was all so perfect and I assimilate it like a book druggie.

I'm still unable to say how incredible this book is. Danielle James' writing is solid and I have yet to read anything she wrote that was not extraordinary.

The relationship between Smoke and Cress was beautifully drawn out descriptively and the tension between them kept me gasping and hawing, whilst flipping through the pages of that sexual tension between them as fast as I could.

While early in their relationship was unconventional, it grew into something incredibly compelling and it culminated in their exciting reunion.

If you're looking for a standalone enigmatic book that's a breeze to read and full of forbidden love, no unnecessary angst, betrayal and second chances, definitely acquaint yourself to this effervescent tale.

DANIELLLE!!!! What did you do!??? I will tell you, you ended my February with a BANG!

From page one I was all in, already we wanted to know more about Julien. Who he was, why his life was the way it was, what he feels, what he would do next and why was he called Smoke.

I've never messaged an author only 4% into a book but I was already obsessed at that point and was like "NO HE DIDN'T!"

Each character, rather likeable or not and believe me some of these mofos were definitely unlikable were so complex and flawed and had darkness and light in them. I love the evil characters that think they're right, the characters that seem innocent and are wolves in sheep's clothing, the black sheep who everyone says is worthless but has the most golden heart of them all.

Smoke and Blood is bloody and intense, it's sensual and sexy, it's an addictive unputdowanable story that will take you on a wild ride!!! You need to meet Smoke, Angel and Cressida!

The deeper you dig, the darker he gets

Wow. Wow. My heart is in my stomach.. This was my favorite Danielle James book so far. I knew from that first chapter Smoke/Julien was going to steal my heart. He was EVERYTHING. And Cress. She was so pure, yet her spark matched Smoke's darkness perfectly. And the sex. Good LORDY. I was panting. Melting. I planned to just read this book a little then come back to it when I was done with the other stuff I was doing but I was sucked in and read this book the entire day. The intense attraction and connection these two shared was unlike anything I read from Danielle James before. I loved them so so so much. And I felt so horrible for the way Cress was treated in her marriage. I wanted to choke slam Angel. Many many times. But never fear. Smoke was always around to show him how to treat a lady. There were so many different layers to this story I want to tell you about but you just have to read it for yourself. This book was INCREDIBLE. 5 STARS IS NOT ENOUGH!!!!!

Well now. Julien is a man I'd love to meet.

Is blood truly thicker than water when the blood has been thinned out by action and intent?

The fall out, misdeeds, consequences, and chain reactions.

The people we grow to be. The only constant in life is change, and sometimes people change quite a bit whether you want them to or not.

Caught between 2 when it only should have been 1. You knew it Cress. But alas, the powers of family ties influence us so when we are left vulnerable.

Though I did truly enjoy this book, only one thing jumped out to me that I found strange. Cress' parents would throw scripture at her about certain things...but always fail to quote the one about adultery. Isn't that weird? is it just me? there isn't just one quote about it either...they could have had their pick. But instead they picked and chose the one's they wanted to bash her upside the head with so that she would go along with the path they wanted.

Is blood truly thicker than water, I ask again? In this book, it just leaves you with a sticky mess that needs a special cleaner to get the bloodstains out.

Kudos to the author. I have enjoyed many books from you so far. This one is no different.

*4.5/5.0 stars. I rate this dark grey on my darkness scale for the things that happen to her rather than for the bloodshed*

Miss James, I know going in your books are dark. But, maaannnnn! This was next level dark! I knew right away, that I would love Smoke/Julien! Although he was portrayed as this monster, you could just feel that there was a genuine kind spirit underneath it all. That damn Angel was evil if I have ever encountered it! 😈 The way he manipulated everyone in his life, and treated them so horribly made you just despise him! Cress, was just a pure soul that was not allowed to think for herself her entire life. Those actions put her in the path of Angel, who broke her spirit and her heart. Julien and Cress reuniting, reignited feelings that had been dormant for many years. I was not surprised when things went down with them, as it would not be a Danielle James book without some taboo! 😃
But, that was the way it was always meant to be with them. They way that Cress embraced the darkness, while bringing light to Julien was just amazing! Another good read! 👍👍👍

It was a very entertaining book. Didn’t like the best friend from the time they went shopping. What kind of brother would ask his brother to do something so crazy when he first got out of prison? Cres was in a bad situation that made it hard to leave. Don’t want to spoil this book for anyone since it’s new but it’s really good.

Where do I start? Not a fan of “cheating” etc., but Julien and Cressida had mad chemistry and history together before Angel. Cressida was a pawn between her parents and POS Angel. Angel was a master manipulator and played on Julien’s love for him. Angel was a narcissist, evil and coward! Her parents were so judgmental and they pastors. The parents only concerned is what they can get out of Angel ugh! They both POS.

Don’t let me start on this so called best friend. This friend ain’t loyal at all and always want what folks have SMH. So disloyal and pathetic.

The sex scenes in this book was fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥 they were sizzling off the reading device. Julien was so loyal and he made Cressida feel safe and loved. He embraced both her and Nasim (son). Cressida had to find her inner self and take back control from that POS Angel. Her psych was messed up from the floor up! She was too naive and did not think for herself; hence the reason she was in that situation with Angel. Once she regained a semblance of control it made her stronger and she was all in with Julien.

Great and gory read!

There is a lot to unpack from reading this book. I assume there were trigger warnings, but I honestly didn't look (call me a rebel).

Cress was beautiful inside and out, but she put up with way too much bullshit. That girl was mentally, physically, and at one point sexually abused. Again, there is a lot to unpack in this book. My heart broke for the vile things Angel said to her (funny name for a monster). I understand the battered wife syndrome because this book screamed it.

Poor Julien was just an errand boy for his brother, who Angel also treated like trash. It took about 30% or more in the book to where I didn't want to throttle "Smoke" because he listened to Angels bullshit. In the end, he took what he wanted and had no remorse.

If you can't handle cheating, then this book is not for you.

“I must not be choking you hard enough if you can still gasp like that,”

Danielle James books can be a bit hit or, not quite miss, just unimpressed for me and this one was a real hit. I loved this book, the angst and craziness of it all was fantastic. Jules was a great H, a bit sadistic but loyal and honest and Cress really came into her own and they were sooooo hot together. Jules is definitely my kind of H. I do wish there was a bit more telling and less showing when it came to some of the background stuff and I noticed a few inconsistencies but none of this took away from my overall enjoyment of the book.

Wow!!!

I really was not going to read this book because of the subject matter. I just couldn’t figure out how the author was going to spin this story to make it okay to sleep with your husband’s brother. However...she did the doggone thing! Yasss! I was so deeply engulfed in this storyline. This book is so good. I did not want it to end.The author took her time to peel back the many layers of Jules. I’m so glad that everything worked out for Cressida and Jules. Not to mention, those lovemaking scenes were 🔥 🔥🔥!

Deserves More Than 5 Stars

I just finished reading this book and I must say that it definitely deserves more than five stars. I’m afraid I will fail to describe how great this book is, so I won’t. But if you’re looking for a story that will keep you on your toes and touch your heart, you found it. Excellent job Danielle!

Wonderful

I am so glad this book had a happy ending. Angel's grandma got into his head and made him hate his brother. He just couldn't hide the hate any longer. I was surprised at Boogie. Good story
