Heaven banished him. Hell set him in action. And mankind needs to destroy him.
For thousands of years, the Angel of Death has challenged worldwide authorities with sinister games of murder. With the abduction of a seventeen-year-old celebrity, a new game has begun that pushes humanity closer to the brink of extinction.
Private Investigator Jack Calloway has died twice in his quest to save children lost in a world of cruelty. Now he accepts a case that will question the boundaries of his faith and sanity as he dares to pick up the pieces.
FBI Agent Harper Caster has been working on the same mysterious case for the last four years. In fact, it’s the only case he’s allowed to pursue. Harper is one of the few who knows the true identity of the man who has crossed centuries of time, a man who never seems to die.
The epic battle between Heaven and Hell finds familiar ground as humanity fights to survive an army of fallen angels. To save the life of one, Jack and Harper must chase the daylight one final time.
I was born in 1974 in Omaha, NE. I have since uprooted my life there and have moved with my wife to the beautiful country hills of Arkansas.
I took a love of reading and telling stories at an early age.
I strongly believe in most of the writing advice I’ve learned from teachers and self-help writing books. Here is where I disagree. I've been told by many to "write what you know!'". That's all well and good if you know a lot. However, for some of us, our knowledge is running a very short race, probably with a mental "bad knee" that makes us run more in circles instead of a straight line. So I usually choose to write about what I don't know. How else do we learn new things if we never explore the dark unknown corners of existence?
I have also chosen to resist all urges to be pigeon-holed as a single genre writer. I love reading different types of novels just as I love writing them. How else can we evolve if we're typing away day after day about a private investigator who has a soft spot for pretty girls in short skirts, following his own rules, and dependency on whiskey? Fifty novels later has our protagonist really learned much? Grown? Or changed by any fascinating degree? Probably not.
So I explore because it's what we humans do best. I write in the range of mystery, fantasy, thrillers, dramas, sci-fi, action/adventure, comedy, mainstream, satire and anything else that might seem challenging enough. Basically, if the plot idea has strong legs, the characters a great purpose, then the idea deserves to be written. Although I will tell you to never expect a Danielle Steel or Nicolas Sparks type novels from me. I've got to draw a line somewhere!
So the rundown is simple if you're expecting to find my work nicely bundled up in one genre because it's the genre you're most comfortable traveling those pages, then I'm not likely an author for you. But, if you want to go on a fun road trip and see those odd side attractions everybody else misses because they're too busy catching the same old (yawn, yawn) attractions thirty million other people have seen, then I am an author for you.
If you like you can take my hand because I see a journey just up ahead and around that dark corner. You shouldn’t worry, not just yet, because I know the way. We'll probably make it through all right, with our sanity, just maybe.
What a roller coaster! This was such an exciting read! The short chapter often ending in cliffhangers kept me turning pages. The story, the clues, the small victories and losses created so many highs and lows for the characters. I was enthralled with the game the angel created and loved that he was always one step ahead. Not that I wanted the detectives to lose, but the twists made the story that much more exciting. Every time you think it's over it's not. Even at the end, no spoilers, but I was thinking, "Wow the author forgot something big" and then wasn't pleasantly surprised they didn't! The storytelling and prose was well done. I'm ready for the next book! I recommend this book to any supernatural, crime, or mystery reader!
First I would like to state that I received this book through the Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review. I would like to thank the author for giving me this opportunity and honor in being able to read this book. When I received this book I began reading it at once. I really enjoy the authors writing style, All the characters are very well portrayed though out. A most interesting read, I recommend this book.
I started reading this book a few days ago and set it aside briefly to knock out an ARC sent to me by a publisher.
What captured my attention with this novel is the premise: a fallen angel plays a game of life and death with mortals when he chooses his next victim, the famous daughter of a CA senator.
Called in to assist the FBI, a private investigator begins the unlikely search for the angel of death.
The premise of this novel is OUTSTANDING! I was sold! I was sucked in immediately. I’ve often read reviewers write how they “wanted to like” a certain book and I never quite understood what that was all about. Either you like a book or you don’t. Don’t we always go in to a book hoping we like it? I do. 🤷♀️
But, I now fully understand what was meant by that statement because I REALLY WANTED TO LIKE THIS BOOK. A thousand year old “game”!? Angels!? The FBI!? I mean come on! Sounds cool, right? Unfortunately for this picky, careful-eyed reader, my enjoyment was snagged by writing that could have used a few more editing passes. I was only a dozen pages in and I caught several grammatical errors. This was not an ARC either (where a careful note to the publisher would have been apt) but a completed book.
As I continued reading it became apparent to me that the fantastic premise was the strongest thing about the book.
Different Book, written in a very straight forward style. Joe Friday from Dragnet meets Sam Spade (the vibe from the films I've never read the books). Film Noir-ish and not much subtlety, at times too much this happened and then this next thing happened. It's a good story though kept me interested to the very end. Though I would not want to read many books in this sparse style (I prefer a bit more descriptive mise-en-scene) the strength of the story carried through and is a refreshing counter-point to the typical novels now out there.
Banished by heaven and welcomed by hell...Azrael has new purpose. He is to destroy mankind anyway possible. He loves murder, mayhem and games. PI Jack has touched death twice in his determined quest to save children. It's not only his job but it's also personal. jack joins FBI Agent Harper who has been trying to solve a case for four years. Harper lets Jack in on little details and secrets in fear of Jack jumping ship, not believing Harper or going insane. Will Harper let him know the identity of the killer? Will justice prevail or will evil keep causing havoc?
I received a copy of this book for free as part of a Goodreads Giveaway.
I'm glad I did. The book is a bit on the short side - missing a fair bit of the characterization that one might want, and perhaps a bit scant on the worldbuilding - but at its heart it's an enjoyable paranormal mystery/thriller. I enjoyed the plot and the premisse and it was reasonably well written.
Jack lost his daughter and became a retriever of lost or stolen children. Unlike so many such characters, his family supports his quest even though that means he is rarely home…
The only thing about this book that was not highly satisfactory was the mythology behind it, which makes God capable of being mistaken. Ain’t no such animal.
A good book to keep you wondering about strange things.
You are taken on a journey will seam strange at times because people are being killed by the angel of death. This is wear the author keeps you wanting more and you will not stop reading. The author did a great job with the book , it might leave you wondering.
What I enjoyed about this book was the way it captivated my interest. I wanted to keep reading because it kept my mind working and my curiosity stimulated. I enjoyed getting to know the complexity of the chase and the interconnections of the characters.
Follow our characters on the trail of the ultimate killer death itself. A great story that takes the readers through the puzzle set up for them by the angel of death. Great surprise ending.
Thought Provoking supernatural mystery. This is a great first book for the author! It had mystery and supernatural twists and was thought-provoking throughout! Could use a little work here and there on point of view, but overall a good story!
I won a Kindle Edition of this book from GoodReads.
I liked the overall premise of this book. I liked the main story (mostly) being kind of different from other mystery novels. I was okay with the sci-fi (or supernatural) aspect and was willing to give it the suspension of belief for that throughout.
This book has many well written action sequences. The story flows and takes the reader along the rapids bouncing up & down with sharp turns. There is the obligatory car chase. There are death defying scenarios.
I am wondering how old the author is because the dialog between two "seasoned" cops/agents is no where near how I have ever heard even devout Catholic homicide detectives converse. The description of the main character's marriage is frighteningly idealistic. If his own marriage is the yardstick by which he based his characters' relationship then he & his wife should teach a class and reduce the divorce rate!
It all comes down to whether or not I'd recommend the book.
If you are looking for a mystery, not sure this will float your boat. The way things unfold is impossible for the reader to guess anything. The clues that are found and lead to the next step are all explained by the characters' knowledge and the reader would not know it ahead of time. But the upside is that you really don't know who the "bad guy" is until it is revealed.
If you are looking for sci-fi/supernatural, not sure this will light your rocket. There are fallen angels trying to corrupt humanity taking over human host bodies when that human's soul departs. These evil beings have an agenda but you are not privy to the big picture. The cop/agent heroes must foil a specific plan to win a battle. Basically, OCD insane dude has a plot that must be discovered in order to save the day. No "real" superpowers used.
If you are looking for a story that is on the dark side but not nightmare inducing, this will work for you. If you are looking for something that you simply follow along without trying to decipher, this is absolutely for you. If you like the mostly happy ending with the DUN, DUN, DUN possibility of sequel book, you should totally give this a shot.
Good twisted murder mystery with a touch of fallen angel horror .
Not a book I normally would read. Dislike the whole demon fallen angel character but it made the book. I stick through it and finished it. Had lots of twist and turns you would not see coming so if you like murder mystery then this is your book. The last ten chapters had me hooked to find out if they saved his daughter.
I have to give this book a mixed review. While there are interesting twists and turns along the way that kept me reading, I was unable to suspend my disbelief enough to become fully engaged. The premise in ‘Chasing Daylight’ is that Azrael, the Angel of Death, has been playing cat-and-mouse games of murder for thousands of years and is now toying with Harper, an FBI agent, over and over, by leaving him clues as to who will be the next victim. I found the premise intriguing and looked forward to seeing how the author would draw me in and convince me of this terrible reality. Unfortunately, I remained unconvinced. Despite his atheistic views, private eye Jack, who teams up with Harper, buys into the fallen angel tale based solely on Harper’s claims. I never saw any observable evidence to convince anyone, let alone the FBI, that the murderer was more than one really mentally screwed up human. Even when we were privileged to hear Azrael’s inner thoughts, it only proved that he believed himself to be a fallen angel, and that he had convinced others to believe the same and follow him. I kept waiting for concrete evidence to prove that his being a supernatural being was the only explanation for the events described. The writing itself was clear and understandable if not particularly inspired. I did notice a number of accidental switches in verb tense from past to present, such as in this sentence: “It was probably the most exciting thing they’ve seen all day.” Putting all that aside, this book is a tense thriller with interesting characters, lives at stake, and deaths that are gruesome. I kept turning pages and rooted for the good guys to win.
This is a story about a grim reaper who finds it entertaining to torment humanity. A private investigator comes into play, Jack Calloway, who is hired to try and solve the disappearance of the daughter of California Senator John Hillcrest, Hannah Jane Hillcrest. He has to face a demonic entity that has been plotting the collapse of humanity for thousands of years, an entity that calls itself “the corruptor of humanity.” The protagonist is not a stranger to the land of death, as he has died numerous times, and his purpose is to find missing children and bring them back to their families.
The story itself is unique and very well-written (with small editing issues). It flows easily and did keep me entertained for hours. The readers get immersed in the world the author created and gives them the feeling they participate in this action, that’s how vividly it’s portrayed. The plot has many parts that are truly dark and unsettling, but ends with a very satisfying conclusion.
Bravo! I first want to thank Goodreads for sending me a free copy of this book, because I probably would have never picked it out myself.... but I am SO happy I read this book! The author did a fantastic job at keeping my attention and also found out he was born in the same state as I am (Go Big Red!)
To start off, I usually DREAD FBI/Cop books because they are usually all the same boring twisted past with a terrible crime. But this book was so utterly different that the paranormal aspect in it made it more realistic. Harper and Jack were a fantastic duo of a team with funny personalities and smart brains uncovering clues. Don't be fooled by the description of this book because it doesn't do it justice! This book has a paranormal angel aspect to it but also a normal everyday FBI feel to it as well. All I know is you need to read this book if you love a good mystery novel!
I was excited to read this book after reading one of Authors other works The Good Ship which was an awesome fantasy adventure, this book however is a thriller from beginning to end. It takes you on an adventure with lots of twists and turns, showdowns between good and evil, and just a great story with a great ending. The writing was flawless and gets you feeling ike you are right there with the characters. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more from this author.
This book was amazing! I’m really picky about my suspense books but this book had me not wanting to put it down. RL was the only reason I did. I really hope a second one is written I need to know what happens to Jack and his family in the future!
What a riveting and action packed book with so many twists and turns I couldn't predict. The whole story really makes you question your belief in God and angels
It's an interesting story. If only the author could choose one POV and stick to it. The story is disjointed and needs a good editor and some serious rewriting.
