Curse of the Frog Prince is a story about princess Akinyi whom King Ofori demanded a forced marriage with, after killing her father and invading her territory.

King Ofori's authoritative and heartless doings over the people of Enwayo was so gruesome, and the people's attempt to halt his evil deeds proved abortive that Akinyi had to endure his barbaric imposition of becoming his wife, a way to further prevent her people from death.

I loved how the story began and how it was told through impressive characters. I love the feature that some characters possess, it explains a journey of endurance, love, resilience, and pain. The plot twist was captivating and it made for an exciting read.

It was interesting to read about the king's demand for the golden ball which was a crucial object to keep his insane soldiers active and fertilize the execution of his bizarre orders. The scenario whereby Akinyi brought out this ball which her grandmother had kept with her, and the instance whereby it rolled to the lake and the eventual appearance of the mysterious frog, Tumelo made for an interesting read. The event of the relationship that simultaneously occurred between Akinyi and the frog prince was something I'll invite the reader of this review to find out for themselves. It was funny at some point and it was mysterious at some other point.

Nonetheless, I felt sad when I read about the death of Delu, I felt so emotional when she was abruptly killed by one of the king's soldiers and the foolish plan to offer her dead body to the king's dog. Something must be done to prevent the spread of King Ofori's wickedness, and it was in great demand when Akinyi found help with the frog who requested that she must marry her. I will insist on revealing more and would love to leave the reader of this review to check out for themselves if Akinyi survived it or not. Was she able to reclaim the territory of Enwayo after facing seasons of cruelty from the reign of King Ofori?

I also love some concepts that was expound in this book about the power of the midnight as relating to the breaking and the making of curses and spells. It is intrinsically dynamic and relatable. Honestly, this book is fascinating and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series!

This re-imagined version of the classic Brothers Grimm fable puts a new spin on the story of a princess, Akinyi, who encounters a frog prince when she loses a family heirloom, a golden ball the size of a soccer ball that she kept hidden in the floor under her desk. Lots of twists, turns, and wild adventure will keep the reader enthralled from first page to last.

The princess is being forced into a marriage with King Ofori, the cruel man who betrayed and murdered her father and took over the kingdom. While they wait a month before the wedding, the King is searching for something, destroying the kitchen, tearing up her mother’s former bedroom, yet angry that his men cannot find a certain gold ball! And according to her spies, he needs to find it before the wedding takes place. When she is left alone again, she took the gold ball out from under her desk. For the first time, it began to glow. When she grabbed for it, she had a sharp pain in her arms and the ball rolled toward the balcony, hit the ground and rolled toward the lake. Despite it being a heavy golden ball, it floated on the surface of the lake! She had to get it before the guards saw! She jumped into the lake as the ball sunk, and she lost consciousness. She woke beside the lake and a voice spoke to her but no one was around.

After running away back toward the castle, she tripped and a frog named Tumelo told her he wanted to make a deal. He agreed to get the ball for her if she gave him 3 things: living in the palace, eating at the royal table, and a soft bed to sleep in. Would she agree to his odd terms? What was he planning to do?

But once she figures out how to use the magical golden ball and with help from a talking frog, the princess will be attempting to turn things around again and get her kingdom back.

I liked the overall story line, the characters, and an ending that made me want to go on to the next book and learn more. Why does the King need the ball? Could Akinyi keep it hidden from him?

What a fun retelling of The Frog Prince! I loved every moment of it and was particularly thrilled with the unexpected twist at the end. It was absolutely brilliant.

So, let's start with the setting. An African kingdom is overrun by a foreign military leader who usurps the throne after killing the king and queen. The crown prince escapes but his sister, Akinyi, decides to remain to protect her people by bargaining for their lives in exchange for her hand in marriage - which was the usurper's end-goal anyway. While awaiting the outcome of the deal she's made, things unfold quite dramatically regarding a non-descript golden ball the princess has kept hidden for years following her grandmother's instruction. By magic, the ball escapes her prison in the royal palace and falls into a lake in the garden. Risking her life to keep the golden ball hidden from her captors, Akinyi sneaks into the garden to retrieve it only to find it's sunk to the bottom and there's no way to retrieve it.

Anyone who knows the classic Grim fairytale will know what happens next, and yet although the author has taken pains to include all the elements of the original fairytale, she has also managed to give it new life. The African setting, the political intrigue and the uncertainty over the frog's intentions made this entirely new take completely refreshing.

This book is very much New Adult as it has some pretty dark and gritty themes. Also, for the more sensitive among readers, there is on-page character death, although I didn't find it as gut-wrenching as it might have been.

All in all, a fun retelling definitely worth checking out if you enjoy different magical systems, unique fantasy settings and a good dose of political intrigue with a strong female character who definitely does the best with a terrible hand dealt.

I will definitely keep an eye out for book 2 to see how the story progresses and ends. That being said, I feel like the book was slow to start because it had long drawn out descriptions. Due to this, I was unable to really become interested in the story until 3-4 chapters in. I also feel that the dialogue and internal thoughts could use some cleaning up, to correct tenses, and also to make sure it all flows well together. I felt some of it was as if the character was childish and other parts were from a more mature perspective. I also think that the book spent a lot of time climbing a mountain only to fizzle out and end too abruptly. I felt like the ending could have been fleshed out a bit more to not leave the writer quite so disappointed that they hung around so long for such a simple end. Overall I think it was a great book for being one of the early ones for this author, I can see she has a lot of potential with her writing. I look forward to reading more from Madam Crystal Butterfly.

Cute so far, but not for kids

As one might expect, this is a take off on the story of the frog prince by, I believe, Hans Christian Anderson originally. Anyway, in this version ,The story takes place with an African princess from an island nation whose country has been taken by an enemy, who is really disgusting, and who insists on marrying her. She agrees, hoping to save her people from pillage, rape and murder. You may wonder when the frog comes in. That's a bit of a surprise. To figure it out, give it a read.
The tale is cute but sometimes graphic, which is why not everyone will like it. Also, it could do with some editing. I have tried to suggest corrections in places but It's a lot of work to catch every mistake so I would suggest getting someone to edit it.

Retelling of the princess and the frog for mature audience

I like the story line and the twist at the end. Total cliffhanger. Once I read the author's comment that the book was mean for 18 and older, it all seems way better. As a New Adult book this story works better. I'm not a big fan of physical description of the characters, so I found that it has a little too many for me. However, the protagonist is strong and smart.. Overall I think it has potential, and just a little warning about the age will help the readers.

A new take on a classic

This book is hard for me to rate because the author is very creative and inspired but there are a great many errors. It’s also hard to find a comparable time of reference with the clothing/language/amenities juxtapositions. It’s clever and a good story, it just needs a little technical tweak and polish.

What a great spin on The Princess and the Frog. I really enjoyed this and am always excited to read a fantasy/fairy tale. There was a great balance of dialogue and narration, and the story was interesting, and so had to give it 5 stars.

It is slightly confusing and has so many details. I liked the begining but then it got too complicated and I could not follow the story. I was hoping for more magical story.

A very silly book and twist on a classic story. The story is choppy and hard to follow. It is more of a fantasy than a fairy tale. It was a waste of my time. I do not recommend this book.

Good story, but I could do without the profanity.

I loved the story itself. The princess annoyed me, so naturally I loved the way it ended. I’m okay with a curse word here and there, but I felt like the f bomb constantly being thrown around distracted from the story.
