Queen of the Lycan: The Crown

Rate this book
Long live the Queen … so they say.

With my arrival to Scotland and my coronation right around the corner, I’d never been more nervous than I am now. Known for having enemies, I didn’t realize becoming Queen would garner even more. I’m not the only one after the throne and the battle for the crown might cost me my life.

The Summits on one side and the Council on the other, it’s a fight to stay on top and protect the lunas from a man’s world. But I’ve never been one to back down, especially when it comes to the lunas. The Summits and Council are in for a rude awakening when I shake things up and turn their worlds upside down.

On top of all that, there’s an evil lurking in the forest and it’s after one thing—me. With my mating ceremony coming up, I don’t know how I’m going to survive it all.

The goal is the crown, but can I keep it?

First of all, I must say I totally adore this book cover! Mackenzie is front and centre on the cover, looking like she is not taking any hassle from anyone! The castle in the background is a clue that yes, this book is set in Scotland. I love the eyes of the wolf on the cover too.

Honestly these books get harder and harder to review without giving away any spoilers! So, this review may be a little shorter and less detailed than normal. In this book Mackenzie is busy preparing for her coronation as Queen of the Lycan, taking over from her biological father Alexander. Rightly so, security is tight in Sheunta Village, with the imminent threat from Fenrir who wants the throne for himself. After the coronation Mackenzie and Bash have their wedding and mating ceremony. If those two things aren’t enough to occupy Mackenzie, she has the stubborn, set in their ways, Kings Council to deal with, along with the European and American Summits too. None of the three groups are particularly happy that Mackenzie is to become Queen and all seem to be plotting her demise with the hopes of stealing her crown too!

One of the Council members, a stuffy old, cantankerous man called Jacob makes the mistake of challenging Mackenzie to fighting his grandson, William. Which, I know this won’t be a spoiler to anyone, as we all know Kenz doesn’t shy away from a challenge, especially if involves a fight! It soon becomes apparent that no matter how Kenz approaches the Council she has inherited from Alexander will work, be it attempts to place nice, to compromise or even threaten. Mackenzie of course ends up handling the problem council in her own direct, no nonsense way. When Mackenzie allows one of the council’s decisions over security, and is later her opinion is proved as being the right one, she knows she has to stand her ground, go with her own gut and either make or add some of her own allies to this rather old fashioned council. However, when Mackenzie’s meeting with the American and European Summits goes in a similar direction to her Queens council meeting, she cannot act as rashly and has to be satisfied with holding her ground and organising another meeting. Charles Cadwell of course makes his thoughts on Kenz fairly clear for everyone to see, not that it bothers Kenz one bit. Wow I so hope she gets to wipe his snide little smile off his face at some point in the future. In fact, I would quite like seeing him begging her forgiveness, or thanking her for somehow rescuing him!! He definitely needs a visit from karma, with Mackenzie around to watch.

Both Bash and Alexander try their best to be there for Mackenzie but she is and I would say, is always going to do things her own way. I enjoyed reading about the interviews of Queens Council candidates. Kenz isn’t afraid to stir the pot, with one candidate being related to a rather chauvinistic current member of the council. Of course, there’s more than one female candidate as well as different species!! I can’t wait for the reactions of the Summits and older Alpha’s who Kenz will be dragging kicking and screaming into a more modern future. As if that isn’t enough to contend with, someone is after something Mackenzie has and she is being kept in the dark about the identity of her future attacker by Fenrir.

So much happens in this book it has loads of twists, turns, little clues to different things going on. This plot branches out in so many directions. Mackenzie has to get through her coronation as Queen, endure the powerful pass over of ruling Alpha power from her biological father, Alexander to herself. Mackenzie would never have categorised herself as weak but this power exchange gives her the extra power needed to roar and put other alphas in their place if necessary. Mackenzie has to meet and deal with what was the “Kings Council” that she inherits, and it sure needs some tweaking to become the “Queens Council”. Mackenzie has to deal with the sly Summits who are working in the background against her whilst they smile to her face. Then there’s a new threat tracking Mackenzie which isn’t afraid to kill anything that crosses its path in its efforts to get to her. Finally, she has a “good” thing to look forward to, her mating ceremony to Bash. That is one thing Mackenzie is totally sure of, the love, and the support and a happy future with Bash, though she does feel a little wobble during the mating ceremony when she has her “mating vision”.

In this book we see Mackenzie reunited with some of the characters from the previous books, such as Ailios the leader of the Highlanders, and Ophelia the Oracle. I love the interactions between Ranulf and Makenzie, they run through so many emotions, such as their usual verbal sparring, yet there’s a lot of mutual affection shown in this book. I was super excited to discover that Lucian is featured in this book, his relationship with Mackenzie as strong as ever. I have a feeling he could end up being key to a certain battle she has looming ahead of her.

There are quite a few new characters in the book too, well one of the characters is new to this book but has appeared in their own (no spoilers here!!) and the other is Dr Daniel Harris who has a new modern clinic in Sheunta Village. I’ll be totally honest I can’t say why but I just don’t like him! I do like one of the other new characters called, Junior Khumalo, the Alpha of the Johannesburg pack who is blatantly ignored by both the members of the American and European Summits.

Another thing I really both appreciated and relished the addition of some more Lunas around Mackenzie. I should confess to having something in my eye as I read how a certain look in the eyes of Maria Fernanda Sandoval from the Barcelona Pack in Spain that reminded Mackenzie of Blu. A female Luna character I totally adored from earlier in the Mackenzie Grey Universe. Then of course there’s the petite Luna, Rowan who has applied numerous times for a position as a guard. Mackenzie knows she cannot improve the world she is living in, or face her latest threat to her life without the help of friends old and new being around her and helping her. I think Mackenzie will always stick up for herself, never ask anyone to do something she herself wouldn’t do but she does seem to be maturing in this book, and accepting the help from those around her.

A couple of things happened/were revealed in this book that I had hoped would happen for a while. As one character has kind of migrated from one of Karina’s other series, I am hoping a few more characters could cross over too. I’d love to see the feisty women from her different worlds meet up! Maybe they will, maybe they will be the key to defeating the looming harm Kenz finds herself facing in this series.

My immediate thoughts upon finishing this book and my summing up are both the same sentiment which is Wow! What can I say? Amazing! When a book delivers all you wanted and more, what else can you ask for? I honestly can’t wait for more!!!

Mckenzie is dealing with becoming Queen of the Lycan in this book. Mckenzie is being put to the test with how the her father's council and others are dealing with her. Mckenize tries to explain the threat to them, they don't listen. When the worst happens, they will start to listen. Mckenize will have to Fenrir but things take some major turn.

I am not saying anymore because it will ruin it, it is a must read. There are so many twists and turns in this book that will leave shocked. Mckenzie is going to have her hands full in her new role, she learns more about the enemies that she will be facing. The end of this book will have your screaming in a great way. This author writing will keep you reading until you reach the end. I really can't wait for the next book in series.

An Tremendously Phenomenal New Mackenzie Gray series!
I couldn't wait to read this when I saw it post onto Amazon. Karina Espinosa has done it again and I have to say I can't wait for more in this series.
The new Mackenzie Gray is even more Kick Ass then ever! It’s not just the enemy on the outside that’s the problem it’s also the enemies within.
The outside threat is Fenir who still wants the Lycan throne and he thinks he’s the rightful King. While the inside threat to Mackenzie is the King’s Council who want her to step aside and let someone else rule…that’s not going to happen while Mackenzie is alive! While waiting to be Crowned Mackenzie sits in with her father Alexander and to get a feel on the people who sit on the council for the King. And let me tell you Mackenzie is going to have her share of headaches with them.
If you think that those are the only threats to Mackenzie you might want to read this book because the author really does a fantastic job of throwing new twists at the readers that truly keeps you captivated with the characters and what is going to happen next. I honestly can’t wait for book 2 in this series to see what happens next.
If you haven’t read any of the Mackenzie Gray series I recommend that read them because I just know you’ll enjoy every minute of reading these books. So start the journey into the Lycan world where one Self-Assertive Woman will make a world of difference for her kind of people!

pretty good

So I just binged the series again and this is the book I’d read but hadn’t exactly finished. I forgot how irritating she could be but at the same time I so appreciate her attitude and innate ability to be that bull in the china shop. Even if she messes up she keeps going until the end goal is done.

She still has some issues but in this installment, I thought it was so fun watching her wave her power around. She’s battling against the higher-ups who used to be bigger than her but now they all must answer to HER. It’s just awesome.

The twist was cool. I think I admire the author a lot for having this constant flow of unfolding. Things you wouldn’t think about as extraordinary in the moment suddenly comes back books later and it’s a little mind-blowing.

Karina Espinosa is off to an amazing start with book one in the Mackenzie Grey: The Crown series, QUEEN OF THE LYCAN. The story takes place after her Mackenzie Grey: Origins and Trials series. I recommend reading them before this novel to avoid confusion. Plus, they are fantastic books, so you do not want to miss out. Karina Espinosa did an excellent job incorporating details from the previous books into this novel. I like that the characters from The Last Valkyrie series were also integrated into this story.

QUEEN OF THE LYCAN is skillfully written. I love how Macenzie’s character has grown throughout the years; however, she is still down to earth despite becoming a Queen. The story has an interesting plot with unexpected twists. Mackenzie still has her work cut out for her with making sure the Lunas are treated equally. The politics in the story were attention-grabbing. I love that her and Bash become officially mated in this story.

Queen of the Lycan is an excellent foundation for the Mackenzie Grey: The Crown series. I recommend these books to people who like Lycan Urban Fantasies. Followers of the Mackenzie Grey series will want to continue with this new series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

It's this moment

Presenting Queen Mackenzie and Prince Consort Sebastian Steele. It's taken many battles to get there and there are still many battles to overcome and that will come in the future near and far. Angels and Demons, ok well not exactly Angels. A passing acquaintance is coming into play. Now we have to figure out how and why we got here. Secrets and revelations. So many monumental events coming to fruition and no way to tell completely who is a true friend and who is a fo. Someone is leaking secret information and I guarantee when they are found, there will be a price to pay. Mackenzie is definitely shaking things up and rattling some cages. And in between it all The Coronation and the impending Mating Ritual/Nuptials.

The moment you walk in to see your love standing there with the pure look of unadulterated pure love. His smile, the twinkle in his eyes. It feels like it's taken ages to get to this pivotal moment. It's a major high and Mackenzie is feeling major low. Her Oracle genes need a boost but nothing can prepare her for what she is about to envision on her day of days.

On to the next book in the series because I am a glutton for punishment and I despise an incomplete story.

Another great book by a talented writer

I just knew it would leave more wanting more. This is a great start To The next adventure in this series. I Love how Karina recaps what happened in the other books. I predicted a bit of the storyline but enjoyed the twists that I didn't quite sort out.there is a decent amount of foreshadowing that you can guess what happens if you are paying attention to the subtle cues.I love the imagery and descriptions of things as it paints a vivid picture in my mind. I do wish I understood or there was a translation for the bits in a foreign language.I also am enjoying the Scottish bits, although I'm not sure if they really speak that way or if there would be another way they would say it I hear a Scottish dialect in my head when I read the words.overall it's a great read and I can't wait for the next installment. Thank you for writing something that peaks my interest and is enjoyable to read.

Fantastic start to the new series and left me wanting MORE!

There are few series that make me yell...WTF. Meaning the story ended to soon, and was so amazing that it reminded me of the action during the freedom wars (Reference the beginning of the series). I was laughing out loud at the one liners, humor and internal dialog. I couldn't put the book down!!! Ugh, I'm so disappointed that the book came to an end. It's a great cliffhanger and not a surprise if you read the series, because you become so engrossed in the character lives that it follows an natural progression. What you can't predict is all the twists, turns, new characters and reactions. I love that! I need to read Raven's series now while impatiently waiting for book two to see the back story on the new characters. Really looking forward to book two!!!!!!!!!

/>What I don’t understand is WHY this Series is NOT more popular !!!
I read/listen to some BIG authors (JR Ward/Sherrlyn Kenyon/Patria Briggs) and This series I feels VERY MUCH stands up to them in. Totally Real way!!!

I have to say-I am thoroughly hooked on this series of stories and I have spent some $$$ getting each book - Yes because of the story and characters - but the NARRATOR(s) make the STORY superb!
I like that there are times that our Lead Mackenzie is not perfect & makes mistakes - she has a very rough edge to herself and that hasn’t changed a whole lot with age…she has matured some in her relationship with Bash & some of her closer friends & allies. I do appreciate how each story is a “complete” story-but does gives us the WANT for the next asap…

Karina Espinosa does not disappoint with the action/suspense and Mackenzie’s sassy attitude in this book!

With Mackenzie’s upcoming coronation and mating ceremony, things will not come easy! The council is giving a hard time at every turn and the summit is not happy with her. Fenrir is out for her blood and a secret gets revealed, she has a lot of obstacles to overcome! And just when you think things can’t get worse, a new threat arrives! I had a feeling with the surprise at the end, but was still shocked.

I can’t say enough about this book. Be prepared to pull an all nighter, it will leave you wanting more!

Mackenzie at her best!!

I was so excited for this book as Mackenzie is my favorite. She has to step into her Destiny to be the Queen of the Lycans. No one on the council want her there. The big bad werewolf is out there stalking her. She is having to navigate the political world while staying true to herself. As you might guess not everyone likes Mackenzie 's truth. She is always on the side of the under dog. I devoured this reading it in one sitting. So worth the read.

Oh Mackenzie. Trouble even follows her back to scottland. She is just a magnet for it. The ending to this book though... I figured that is what she had that was so sought after. I'm glad that when she became queen, she cleaned house and is replacing them with those she can trust. It is the 21st century and everyone needs to move forward. I think she is finally realizing how much Bas can help her if she just lets him in. I hope the series doesn't plan on ending for a long time.

The time has come for the queen to sit on the throne. And boy does she do it in true MacKenzie style. I am so excited for this new Era of the series. So much action, twists, turns, tears....my tears. I loved this book. I can't wait for the next book in the series. So much excitement is on the way.

I didn't realize this was part of some other book series. It felt like I was just dumped in the middle of an ongoing story, and it ends just the same. I was specifically looking for a first in series book, but there was clearly another series of books that did all the world building for these characters. I'm just so annoyed that the description doesn't mention it.
