The idea of an arranged marriage may be complicated, but the infamous first meet is more brutal than anything else. What to talk about, how to behave, what to wear, the questions are endless, and the nervousness incurable. But still, we take the plunge in the hope of meeting someone special who would steal our breath away, race our slow heartbeats and manage to ignite a spark inside us. Meet Pankh as she goes on to the first meet with Aman. Their journey is infectious but crazy. If all goes well, wedding bells will ring, and if not, they both will move on and get into the cycle of meeting other people until they meet their better-half, their soulmate. Pankh is jolly, loud, nervous, and Aman, sweet, polite, and an absolute gentleman. It's the perfect pair in the imperfect world, but it all goes downhill just because of one mistake, one misunderstanding. Will they make it, or will they stay as a memory in each other's hearts forever.
Payal Dedhia is born and raised in Mumbai, mentoring students in coding and development. While enjoying the busy life the city offers, she loves to travel, explore, and visit new places. As being a passionate reader, she always dreamed of crafting her ideas and imagination into words. She has enjoyed the nerve-racking journey of writing, deleting, re-writing, and finally bringing out the finished product. As a teacher, her sole goal is always to bring out the best in her students, and she has endeavored to get the same out of her.
My ratings: 4.4/5 Pankh has just completed her graduation and wants to start doing a job. However, her mom convinces her to meet Aman via an arranged marriage proposal. The first meeting between Aman and Pankh doesn't go as planned. However, they do end up enjoying each other's company. But things go downhill after a few meetings as Pankh feels that Aman takes her for granted. Will they be able to come together?
What I liked about the book: -> The concept of arranged marriage is shown in a very positive light. -> Pankh's sense of humor and internal dialogues in the entire story. -> The relationship of Pankh with her BFF and her mother. These are very nicely depicted. -> The growing closeness and growth of the relationship between Pankh and Aman.
What I did not like about the book: -> Pankh's behavior after the misunderstanding. -> The end felt rushed.
Quotable quotes: -> Every day is a new day. The day which has gone has gone. Don't try to bring the past incidents into your new day. The mantra for a happy and successful life is to never drag your previous day to your present day. Let bygones be bygones. -> Sometimes the simplest things attract you the most. -> You need to speak up if you are not liking things. Others cannot fight every battle for you.
The idea of arrange marriage and how actually youngsters meet is shown practically. Even the misunderstandings, saying no, the excitement, jitters, nervousness, all is true. For a short read, it is a great book. Ending is perfect as it is not a perfect ending but a hint that life goes on, new problems will come but what remains is love, trust and commitment towards each other. Overall, a bubbly, sensitive read.
I have read a few arranged marriage stories, some good and some not so great but this one 'The First Meet', was definitely a great enjoyable read. I really liked the characters Pankh and Aman.
I loved Pankh's bubbly personality and all the thoughts which go through her head when she actually goes for the first meet with Aman were really funny.
Aman is a mature, stable, responsible kind of guy. He has an affable personality and you immediately like him as a character.
This book is a short and sweet read where Aman and Pankh meet for an arranged marriage, how they start liking each other, how a small misunderstanding turns into a separation between them due to extreme reactions, and then finally how they meet again and make up and finally decide to get married.
I like the writing style of the author, the way she portrays and develops her characters is really commendable.
Now I am moving on to read the second book in this Arranged Marriage series 'The Life Together'.
The first meet by Payal Dedhia. The book starts with a young Pankh Shah geared up for meeting Aman Shah for an Arranged Marriage proposition. It's a light read that focuses on how two people meet to talk about their life and marriage. I loved the way it is written as it focuses on relationships. The nervousness, jitters on meeting a stranger is well penned. Also the excitement to meet again and when things don't work out how it breaks your heart. Pankh and Aman face one such situation that breaks the bond they have created. It's breaks their relationship and also the heart of two families that we're counting on them to work so two families can be bonded forever. Overall, this book gives clear insight on how arranged marriages work in India with light humor and banter. I loved reading this book and can't wait to read the second installment of the series. Author has done remarkable work by touching one of the social topics with humor and romance. This book is for all youngsters who are excited to meet the love of their life.
Lovely short sweet story by Payal Dedhia. Arranged Marriages are so common, yet difficult, and the first meeting is always awkward. The way the author has written this entire story around the first meeting and till the couple realizes they are actually fond of each other and can not live apart, is beautiful. I had a sweet smile pasted on my face throughout the book. The characters of Pankh & Aman are beautifully portrayed and well etched out. The story is more from Pankh's perspective and I would have loved to hear Aman's perspective also in between as he was falling for her charm or when she suddenly decided to distance herself. Overall, a wonderful short read which will make you want to pick up the second part of the series immediately.
This is a typical Indian Arranged Marriage scenario where I could literally see myself in place of Pankh. She was a dreamer and at the age of 22 she had that purity and innocence preserved in her. Aman on the other hand was a guy every girl could dream to be with. Handsome, well educated and kinda foreign return, well settled in career. The only catch was he lived with his joint family of 16 members. Will Pankh agree to this joint family set up, being pampered like a princess of a nuclear family, will she accept Aman's alliance and say yes? Or she will get scared and say no? Read on and get your answer!
P.S. i absolutely loved Pankh's bff Rashi who was soul sister and a rock for Pankh.
A nice story read. Read such sweet, innocent story after a long time. Arrange marriages.. meet ups, getting to know eachother. So is portrayed well in this book. A little twist in the end and you think it's over and the characters have moved on but of course that's not the case.. it's happy ending for them whereas in real not so easily...

A sweet, light read that makes you laugh, cry. Really enjoyed it. This book had a potential to be a full-fledged novel but its good as a short read too... :)
