"Not all that's nurtured blooms."

In the sleepy town of Agartala, a honeymooning couple stumbles upon the dead body of a woman buried in their backyard.
The body is found to be that of a woman named Rituparna Bagdi. A popular English teacher who gave Mathematics tuitions to her senior students.
The principal of Rituparna’s school is shocked to hear of her demise. She had resigned only a month ago – rather abruptly through an email. And vanished without warning.
As Inspector Jui Roy investigates her first big case after being side-lined for years, she stumbles upon Rituparna’s diary. In her diary, the young, brilliant and popular school teacher mentions three men.
One, her ex-husband Mrinal Chatterjee. An alcoholic and fledgling actor who had a love-hate relationship with his wife.
Two, her colleague, the Mathematics teacher Virendra Jha who was losing a chunk of his tuitions to the new English teacher.
Three, Paul Jamatia, the eighteen-year-old, poor resident student who is a Maths genius in the making.
While Inspector Roy and SI Das investigate the murder, the three men reveal why they loved, hated and wanted Rituparna.
Only one of them is a murderer.
But, the question is who and why?

With this book, we see the rise of Inspector Jui Roy and her partner in solving crime, SI Pritam Das.

Chitrangada Mukherjee has again proved her expertise as a thriller writer, and now she delivers a power-packed murder mystery novel. Her writing prowess is intact even in this one, but the added bonus is that here we are treated with a plotline so very starkly imaginative and intelligent that the book emerges as a total winner.

I've been always been fond of crime stories, both fictional and true crime. And here's a book that blurs the boundary between what is 'fictional crime' and what is 'true crime'. It will give you chills and thrills, and you'll go on reading the book like a madman.

The story follows a couple who find a corpse buried in their backyard. The woman is identified to be school teacher named Rituparna, and Inspector Jui Roy is assigned the case. The investigation starts from the discovery of the personal diary of Rituparna, in which she had mentioned three men in her life. All three of them emerge as suspects, and as the story continues, more details emerge about their love, hate and friendly relations with her. It is now upto the young Inspector and her partner to solve the case and recognize the true murderer. Hence the title: “Three men and a strange murder” !

More than the plot of the story, what becomes exceedingly luminous are the diverse values the characters personify. We see love in its frailest of shades, and we experience prejudices and vindictiveness like never before. The book manages to convey the lewd and naked fierceness of human character. It is as if the author is always one step ahead of the readers, paving ways for their detour, implanting grenades of suspense and drama that they might run into. Her diction is surely thought out and well presented, and her command not only lies in what he writes, but also what her writing might do to the readers. The characters themselves uphold the air of mystery and secrecy that is the cherry on the top. They are very unusual people, with heinous insecurities and secrets to keep. One of the most special attributes of the book is undoubtedly how spontaneous the crime aspect is. The investigation isn’t overstretched or biased, rather it sounds extremely lifelike and demands rapt attention. Chitrangada Mukherjee’s latest novel is therefore a treat for crime lovers, or anyone who wants to spend his day with utmost excitement and thrill!

A Compelling read!

👮 I was little hesitant to take up this book when I found this to be a part of a series, but the author is true to her words as she mentioned that this is a Standalone and it surely is.(not all disclaimers turn out to be true, but this one is!)

👮 The recent books that I have read, of the same genre, usually begins slow and turns gripping only at the later part of the book.
I had the same expectation for this book as well, again I was proved wrong.
Right from the start till the last page, the story is so riveting and I cannot point out even one place where I saw it coming -- totally unpredictable and nail biting experience.

👮The woman characters in the story are mindfully crafted - the victim Rituparna, the Inspector Jui Roy, Jhorna the maid, Mrs. Jamuna Roy, Mrs.Lahiri , Dipti a colleague of Ritu Gita di the neighbor.

👮The style of writing, the choice of words, the vivid flow the story takes us through, the astounding plot, the catchy cover (designed by the author), makes the book thoroughly enjoyable and impressive.

Totally recommended for those who love Psychological thriller and Murder Mysteries , that is promising.

Looking forward to read the author's previous book in the series and many more that are yet to come.

Ohhhh my heavens... What a thrilling story. How thrillingly the author disclosed the events!?
As this is a beautiful and gripping one u must read it without any hints.
Dear reader this is perfect book I can recommend. But some mistakes are there if u look with a keen eye. And that's not a grave mistake.!
The cover so much attracting. A couple finds a dead body! A teacher's. She was killed by someone but their is 3 suspects.!
1. Her ex husband.
2. Her colleague.
3. A student.
Who, How and Why!!?????
The police officer who solves the case is potrayed with brilliance.

With its simple narration and twisting plot, this book offers more than I had expected. Serves perfectly for a thriller-mystery appetite.
A small town teacher is murdered and everyone connected to her is on radar of police. Her landlord, ex-husband, colleagues, even students are being interrogated by Inspector Jui Roy, who is analysing the suspects with the help of deceased's diary. All the characters are interesting and mysterious owing to their dubious past, which aspect is maintained till the very end.
The novel offers a good mix of tension, conspiracy, shady businesses, emotions and drama.

A thrilling mystery, lots of emotions and some lessons... This book is an interesting blend of three. Story starts when a couple finds a corpse of a woman buried in their backyard on the first day of their new house at Agartala. Inspector Roy and SI Das is given the job of solving the murder of this English teacher, named Rituparna Bagdi. Woven with delicate happenings and emotions of life, slowly Rituparna's life unfolds as the story moves.

A mystery which can keep you glued until you are done solving it is the nature of any good mystery, but this mystery not only did that but also stayed with me for the rest of the day or maybe will come up later as well. (Who knows... memory is a weird creature) With good amount of descriptions, this book can make you dive into the ocean of mystery as twists and turns come crashing towards you one after the other.

Themes which I loved in this book:

1. Women's struggle in the society: How weird that we celebrate women's day with such vigour, yet society never ceases to stop hurting women who doesn't go with their set conventional ways, both physically and mentally. The author has done a great job in bringing this with subtleness as the mystery unfolds.

2. Education : Bringing out the darkness behind the light named, education, the author has portrayed today's education system and how education is becoming more like a business instead of a holy place where learners learn.

3. Unconventional aspects: This book consists of many unconventional aspects which society can't or rather I should say, doesn't want to accept. One of it is, blending of two different streams of education and the age-old quarrel in between them.

So my dear friends, since this a mystery I'll not say more as it's your work to find out the murderer. If you really love a good mystery, get a copy of this intricately weaved plot and delve into it!

Thank You. Hope you enjoyed this review!

When a honeymooning couple unsuspectingly unearth the body of a woman buried in the backyard of their cottage at Agartala, Inspector Jui Roy finally gets to investigate her first case of homicide, assisted by SI Pritam Das.

The woman turns out to be Rituparna Bagdi, a popular English teacher and math whizz, who, much to the displeasure of her co-workers, gave tuitions to a batch of students from the school she taught in.

This batch included Paul, a prodigy and an introverted genius, one of the three men Rituparna mentioned in her diary entries.

The other two men include amateur actor Mrinal Chatterjee, her ex-husband; and Virendra Jha, the mathematics teacher in her school, who thoroughly resented losing his students to Rituparna.

During the course of the investigation, the three men, reveal their varied feelings of love, hatred and longing for Rituparna.

And one of them is her murderer.

The character development in the novel is simply excellent. The characters of the victim, suspects, the cops and even the smaller appearances, like the maid and the transcriber in the police station are very well written and helps to advance the plot.

With a gripping storyline and engaging characters, the novel will definitely manage to keep your attention until the very last page. This book is unquestionably one my favourite works from the author.

Rituparna, a divorcee and a schoolteacher is found dead in her backyard after a month of death. Who could have killed her? Ex-husband? A jealous colleague? A jilted lover? The case is in the hands of Inspector Jui Roy, a divorcee fighting the innate sexism of the police force and Pritam Das, her ex-boyfriend. Who killed Rituparna and why forms the rest of the story.

Firstly, I appreciate how the author chose to talk about young and teenaged criminals. No matter how much we deny the reality, teenage crimes exist and it is high time we talked about them. The author did a great job navigating through the emotions of teens.

Coming to the story, it is intense and riveting. Rituparna, the single woman with no friends and family is an enigma. So is Jui Roy, who has her past demons to fight. So is Paul, a brilliant student of Ritu. Combining all these personalities, we have a thrilling crime mystery with a hint of human psychology that will leave you hooked.

The language is as simple as the characters are complex. Whatta combination for a crime novel. You can guess the killer halfway down but I would suggest you to read up to understand the murder motive.

I would recommend it to all crime lovers including beginners; more so to people interested in criminal psychology.

Exceptional storytelling

Rituparna Bagdi, a teacher from Rainbow High school was found buried in the backyard of her house. Why would someone kill a normal and decent living teacher?
3 men are suspected to have motives behind the murder. One, Rituparna's ex-husband who was still in love with her. Second, a student who deeply admired her. Third, a colleague who envied her. Each of them has a motive to kill Rituparna for revenge or love.

Compelling narration and fascinating storytelling make this book unputdownable. Often, authors fail to grab readers attention with their pretentious writing. But Chitrangada's natural storytelling ability kept me hooked throughout the novel. What I liked the most is every character's importance is emphasized within a very short novel and nowhere the story seemed to be dragged. Dialogues were not uninteresting. Altogether, the author has done an exceptional job at writing down a gripping thriller.

I just completed reading this amazing book and couldn't contain in what I had to say about it.

Its an extraordinary blend of suspense and thriller. This book delivers brilliantly at what it is expected to give, an enthralling plot, well structured form and effortless language. There are two narrators and i felt the diary narration brought the very best out in the content. The characters come decked with intensity and reason. Inspector Jui Roy and SI Pritam Das became my absolute favourite because of their chemistry, despite the turns that came. This language is vivid, and I surely had a wonderful time reading this one. I would specifically mention the small details that I will carry with myself for long. The crane photo frame has all my heart.

I recommend this book to everyone who needs a good read or a good day 🌼

I would give 4.5 to this book, since there is no such option I gave 5⭐.

The novel has all the elements to have us hooked right from the beginning. This was a fast read and I completed within a day. I completely enjoyed this and highly recommend this if you are looking for a quick read.

We are introduced to Rituparna's diary. We are immediately introduced to the couple Amrita and Bilal, they find a corpse at their new-house-to-be's backyard. The corpse was found by Kuttush- their pet dog.

Then starts the investigation. The strong willed Jui Roy investigates this case. Apparently it's Rituparna's corpse they found. Rituparna an English teacher at Rainbow school was loved by colleagues and students.

We have three major suspects
1. Mrinal Chatterjee - Ex- husband an alcoholic actor.
2. Virendra Jha - Colleague who hated Ritu.
3. Paul - 18 year old loner, who took tuition from Ritu.

Everyone seems to have their own say about Rituparna.
• "Sir, I hated that woman but I didn't kill her."
• "She was a savage. She knew how to cut people off."
• "Rituparna was a divorcee, It felt like…she was still married."

The story is about a young couple who discovers a body of Rituparna and Jui and SI Pritam are all set to find out who the killer is. The title is quite apt with the story of three men in her life Mrinal her husband, Pritam a student, Virendra a colleague.

The best part of the book are, the author has taken into consideration every character involved, each character has there own interpretation at their own time which adds depth to the story. I even thought sometimes that it is more than 3 men. The book is mentioned as a part of series but can be read as standalone.

The negative of the book will be that The story is quite predictable, you could guess how it going

I got the book on Kindle Unlimited, and dug into it because I wanted a "light read". It was nicely written, with likable characters, neat twists and turns, and I finished it in two short sittings. But it was not certainly not "light". Though on the face of it, it appears to be a simple murder mystery, the book actually deals with complex issues of domestic violence, societal expectations from women, toxic love, and stereotypes associated with women at the workplace. In fact, one of these is a critical plot element that leads to the twist at the end.
I am glad I read the book, and looking forward to more from the same author.

Excellent Narration!
The novel; though written under the 'Thriller Genre'; not only focuses on the murder mystery part but also delves deep into the character development.
The author has beautifully described the socio conditions around a crime investigation which proves to be quite engaging.
The narration is superb and keeps us glued to the pages, especially the diary entries which act as add-ons to the underlying mystery.

This novel is not only a ruminative thriller with a strong subtext but it’s also a layered murder mystery with well-etched characters which aims at conveying powerful social and academic messages without turning preachy. Or without compromising on the “thrill” of a thriller.

I was born and raised in Tripura so needless to say this book is pretty close to my heart. There are a lot of things I loved about the book. First thing that caught my eye was the table of contents. I knew what the author tried doing here….dissecting each character one chapter at a time and in between, taking us through the pages of the victim’s diary, her own narrative. I liked reading about the familiar names of streets , lanes, small towns , which were so closer to me but now a distant past. Even the characters felt so familiar, names I knew or heard of. So you see for me this book is personal.
Of the main story we pretty much knew who the suspects were but I am not sure if I had narrowed down the killer. So when I knew who the killer was, I was wondering why the author went on for another few more pages before ending the book. So read till the end to learn about the spine chilling twist.
Kudos to the author for bringing my home state, Tripura in the limelight. Looking forward to reading more of her books.

Poignant & Brilliant

Deep but tight narration. Two powerful and parallel narratives - first person narration in Rituparna’s diary and third person narration in the dissection of the crime.

A gamut of well-developed characters and a story which at the heart of it is an intimate look at the follies of humans.

Loved the tiny details of places and people. Even a minor character shines in the book. Be it the transcriber at the police station or the maid, Jhorna.

A fresh perspective on education too.

All in all a brilliant novel.

The plot of the story is told in a parallel fashion, with Rituparna’s monthly diary entries forming one set of narratives, and the murder investigation forming the other. The idea of using a diary to tell the story of the victim is an interesting way of comparing and contrasting the events of the present. Another aspect that stands out is the simplicity of the plot and things have not been made complicated just for adding an element of intrigue to it. The storytelling keeps the reader hooked and manages to capture the reader’s interest into the investigation. The element of surprise is maintained till the very end and true to the premise, the strangeness of the crime is not let out of the bag anytime before it is supposed to be. The language is simple and easy to understand. The best part for me was that the story arc of all the characters comes together and no part of the story was random or seemed forced. There are a few grammatical issues in the latter part of the book, though nothing too serious. The climax is seamlessly integrated and excellently executed.

Coming to the characters, I was impressed by the character of Inspector Jui Roy and the manner in which she has been sketched. With shades of grey, her way of investigation was quite interesting and with the teasers into her life and equations with a couple of other characters, I would be more than happy to read more crime fighting exploits from her desk. SI Pritam Das comes across as another promising character and his quirky mannerisms did make the read funnier. Rituparna’s character was a surprise though I felt a bit more personalization to her could have added more to her relativity with the reader. Other characters , and specially the three men, were devised beautifully and their individuality stands out and adds a wonderful flavor to the story.

# Three Men & A Strange Murder (Kindle Edition)
# by Chitrangada Mukherjee

🌿 The author has precisely connected scattered dots of events begins from married couple honeymooning, finding Rituparna's body and her diary, finding the main culprit involved and investigation of her murder to get the real murderer.

🌿 A triangle of suspects formulation presented by the author CHITRANGADA.

🌿 Three suspects i.e. her own husband( ex-husband Mrinal Chatterjee), a known colleague(Mathematics teacher Virendra Jha) and her student(Paul Jamatia, an eighteen-year-old, poor tribal student) are interpolated by Inspector Roy and SI Das to find the real murder of Rituparna.

🌿 The story is unique with a fresh combination of thoughtful imagination followed by notable narrations and attractive illustrations to the characters and events taking place.

🌿 Suspense and thrilling colours are twisting corners of the flowing imagination, adding more interesting experiences to the readers.

🌿 Cover of the book & simple writing is hooking joints while creativity conspicuously creates a fusion of curiosities.

🌿 While the plot elongates the creativity, the thoughtful presentation imbibes the favourable turns adding extra layers of decoration.

🌿 The author CHITRANGADA has not only attempted to create a vibration in the minds of the readers but also leaves with a questionable sign on face and mind with the phrase why and how.

🌿 This context brings more spectacular identity to the text of the reader and notably precious in terms of fabulous creation.

🌿 I liked it and readers will like it too.

This is an amazing blend of thriller and suspense. The plot is based in the town of Agartala where a couple comes across a dead body of a woman. It was buried in their backyard. Further investigation leads to the information that the body is of a woman named Rituparna Bagdi. She was a popular English teacher who gave Mathematics tuition too. Just a month ago Rituparna resigned from the school through an email and since then nobody knew about her whereabouts.
Jui Roy was appointed as investigating officer for this case. During her investigation, she finds Rituparna’s diary. Her diary stated three name.
One, her ex-husband Mrinal Chatterjee. An alcoholic and fledgling actor with whom she didn't had a good relationship.
Second one is her colleague, Virendra Jha. He was the Mathematics teacher whose students were switchinf to different tuition that too going to Rituparna.
And lasty is Paul Jamatia, an eighteen-year-old poor tribal student who is brilliant in Maths.
The plot is based on how Inspector Roy and SI Das investigate the murder and who among these three men murdered Rituparna.
The narration is nice. Each character was penned down so wel plus each had enough scope to add to the plot. I loved how each character was put in focus for better analysis and the spotlight kept on switching from one to another.
The language is lucid and the words selection is easy and simple making it a good read.

This is a murder mystery, the book commences with a honey couple stumbling upon a dead body of a woman buried in their backyard. Through investigation, the identity of the corpse is revealed to be Rituparna Bagdi, an English teacher.

The principal of Rituparna’s school is shocked to hear of her demise. She had resigned only a month ago – rather abruptly through an email.
As Inspector Jui Roy investigates her first big case after being side-lined for years, she finds Rituparna’s diary. In her diary, the young school teacher mentions three men.

First, her ex-husband Mrinal Chatterjee. An alcoholic and a fledgling actor.

Second, her colleague, the Mathematics teacher Virendra Jha.

Third, Paul Jamatia, an eighteen-year-old, poor tribal student who is a Maths genius.

Highlights of the book-

1) The Language used is simple and easy to understand. Even a first time reader will easily understand.

2) The supporting characters have been brilliantly written and add up to the story perfectly. Especially Dipti, Jui Roy, Sunil Lahiri, Jhorna etc.

3) The Narration is crisp & Clear.

4) The story is not unnecessarily stretched, which keeps the story engaging. The book is a few hours read as it is under 225 pages.

5) The story could be visualised in front of the eyes, as it happened with me throughout.

What happens In the end and who is the real culprit will make your mind work like a computer with all the guessing games.

Sure shot recommendation to all the suspense lovers.

A story that is crafted neatly with the mystery around the lady and the three suspected murderers. The story opens with the body of a school teacher found buried at the place she had stayed by a couple which starts a chain of solving the case and finding the murderer.

Jui Roy and SI Pritam start working on this case that promises a lot of twists and bends. The story oscillates between Rituparna’s diary and the current scenario which gives a perspective to the readers as to how she sees the “so called suspects” and how the situation unfolds in real. The three men entangled in this are: The co professor Virendra who has a grudge with her for being for so popular among studies and being a math genius. Her husband Mrinal with whom she shares a turbulent relationship and is a part of her life even after divorce. Her student Paul whom she helps in studies, he is infatuated with her and thinks they could have a relationship.

The characters are developed well and the diary helps to a great extent in gauging a perspective about them. Also there are layers to all characters which adds to the mystery level and keeps you hooked till the end. A well written one although at the end it becomes a tad predictable and dragging.

A neat read overall.

Who killed and why?

Book Review:

We're given an insight into Rituparna Bagdi's, the protagonist, life through her diary and the people around here. A honeymooning couple, recently shifted to a new house, stumble upon a corpse in their backyard. The investigation begins with Inspector Jui Roy and SI Pritam Das as in charge. I just finished reading "Three Men and a Strange Murder" and I'm still reeling from the experience. This thriller had me hooked from start to finish! What sets it apart is the unique inclusion of diary entries, which resonated deeply with me as a fellow diary enthusiast.

The story begins in the sleepy town of Agartala, where a honeymooning couple stumbles upon the dead body of a woman buried in their backyard. The corpse is identified as Rituparna Bagdi, a popular English teacher who gave Mathematics tuitions to her senior students. As Inspector Jui Roy investigates her first big case after being side-lined for years, she finds Rituparna's diary, which reveals a complex web of relationships with three men: her ex-husband Mrinal Chatterjee, her colleague Virendra Jha, and her student Paul Jamatia.

The author masterfully strikes a balance between the diary entries and the investigation, crafting a narrative that's both intriguing and suspenseful. Although the ending was slightly ambiguous, I was thoroughly captivated by the writing style, which made the complex story feel effortlessly simple.

I'm now a huge fan of the author's writing and eagerly look forward to reading more of her work!
