Cat stuck up a tree?
Sounds like a job for a dragon…

Dragon shifter Dai had hoped that his first mission as a firefighter would be just a little heroic.

A cat stuck up a tree was not exactly what he had in mind.

But there’s more to this cranky kitty than meets the eye...and more than lives at stake. It’ll take a whole crew of powerful shifters to handle this emergency…

A sweet, funny, and heartwarming shifter short story - perfect for brightening up your coffee break!

First Mission is a standalone prequel to Zoe Chant’s hugely popular Fire & Rescue Shifters series. It does not contain any spoilers for the series, and can be enjoyed without having read any of the other Fire & Rescue Shifters books.

I think if I had started the series with the story, I would have had a slightly different view on the rest of the series. Or maybe I'm just saying this because I already know the whole series and picked up on some hints. We'll never know so I can't tell you to start with this or have it be the cherry on top. But this was short and fun and I absolutely recommend it if you like stories about shifters.

This was a very cute short read. I found the bond between Minnie and her mate so sweet and I'm so glad they were reunited in the end <3

I liked the character Hughes a lot. He was very funny and brought a great sassy energy to the team.

Alas, I had to mark this book down a few stars. There is so much that I love about Zoe Chant books that it's actually just disappointing that almost every book has some straight up problematic shit thrown in that doesn't serve the plot; the only point, I think is to irritate the hell out of me.

We have to stop normalizing predatory behavior by women. And when women sexually harass men it shouldn't be treated like a joke or something harmless or something the men should get a kick out of. These firefighters are freaking working and a crowd of women literally pulls out popcorn, makes a bunch of lewd jokes about their "equipment" and even wolf whistle at them. The first interaction the main character has with a resident of the facility is a woman asking if he's a real firefighter or a stripper.
That is all gross and despicable behavior. Not okay.
If a group of old men did that to working women we would be horrified.
We SHOULD be just as horrified when men are blatantly sexually harassed at their places of work.

All of the sexualizing of the men by community members when they were just trying to work is why this is a three star read for me.

Like damn, Zoe Chant team, can y'all just make me a beta reader so I can pull out like the 3 paragraphs of bullshit you put in every book just to make my head hurt?
Chant shifter romances are my favorite fluffy nonsense books and there's always some sexist bullshit, whether misogynistic or misandrist, that just ruins the entire thing for me.

sweet

This is a pretty fun introduction to the firefighters and a very sweet story of reuniting an elderly couple. Not bonkers or anything, but an interesting world.

This is a cute prequel short story to the Fire and Rescue Shifters series. It is very short, and basically just introduces the fire and rescue shifters, as one of them goes on his first mission. It has a sweet ending, when they help an older couple. You could read it without having read the rest of the series, but you would probably enjoy it more if you've read the series first. If you haven't yet read the series, it will probably make you want to.

My only problem with this story is that it was just very short. It was definitely meant to be only a prequel, to introduce the characters, so there is not much character development.

One problem I have with all of Zoe Chant's series is that there is so long between books. Lots of times I have to go back and reread some of the earlier books in a series, simply because it has been so long that I don't remember all the characters. That is frustrating. I know Zoe Chant is actually a group of authors, and one person writes all the books in a series -- but I wish the books in a series could be published closer together.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

As part of the Alpha Team firefighters, Daifydd Drake had thought he would only be sent out on very important and perhaps even dangerous assignments, as everyone on the crew is a shifter. But the dragon-shifter is not impressed when told he needs to retrieve a cat who seems incapable or just unwilling to get out of a tree. When Dai is told some key information about the feline, he feels a little better. That is, until it appears the task is not going to be resolved as easily as he would have assumed.

I was truly amazed at how much detail is packed into this short story about the Fire & Rescue Shifters, where Dai is sent on his first undertaking as a new recruit. Humor can be found all throughout this innovative book, and I laughed so hard more than once. From witty comments to what I pictured happening, every situation is depicted so cleverly. Zoe Chant definitely makes this story about shifters enthrallingly imaginative at all times, as each character is portrayed with distinctive personalities and behavior. There were some very real emotions being displayed, too, which were deeply affected my own feelings. Anything dealing with the paranormal is also creatively described in unique ways. Getting to know Dai and some of his co-workers resulted in pure reading pleasure for me, and I was totally intrigued about each of them.

Fire & Rescue Shifters: First Mission is short, it’s meant to be just a rather short story to introduce the crew from the series on Dai’s first day as an official firefighter.

I happen to love prequels so I had such fun with this one. Dai is a dragon who, well, always feels a bit superior because he is, after all… a dragon. But on this day he’s going to get more than a few surprises tossed his way. One tiny cat shifter is about to get the best of this crew as we meet each shifter who was a part of the original Fire & Rescue Shifters series.

Really can’t say much more as this is… well a short. It’s funny, took me back to the camaraderie of the series, and gave me a few chuckles. Hard to ask for much more than that from a very short story.

This one may give you enough of a taste of these series to want to go check them out for yourself. I hope you do for their stories are unique, intense, sizzling, and entertaining.

I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

VERY short but a really cute story

It's Dai's first day at Fire & Rescue and he is asked to go to a retirement home and get a cat out of a tree! Who Knew how many shifter firefighters it would take to do that "simple" task! This is a sweet introduction to the characters in Fire & Rescue Shifters, if you have not yet read it. If you have, this is a brief reminder of who they are!

The pace is fast and the tone is hopeful with a character oriented storyline that has no steam and no real fighting or action either. The characters are intriguing, especially if you haven't already read this series. This story gives you a tiny glimpse into the series. Enjoy.

I first read this as a bonus read that the author offered on her website/newsletter (I don't remember which). I loved it then and I love it now. An introduction to Alpha Team during Daifydd's first day on the job. We also get to meet Hugh before he joins East Sussex Fire and Rescue. All the fun and drama from the series wrapped into a very quick, emotional read. The story was perfect though way too short - I wished it could have be longer. Grab this and have a fantastic evening or lunchtime read (but be prepared - you'll want to read the Firefighter and Wildfire series again).

True Love! 4.5***** Spoiler Alert

Minnie, a shifter stuck in her cat form, was suffering from Alzheimer's, while her mate, was held in a horrid long term facility for humans after a cerebral vascular event. Ash and the Alpha Team worked with High Argent, the unicorn with healing powers to heal the husband, so he can console his cat-wife so she can shift back. Such an adorable novella! And this was how Hugh the Unicorn joined the Alpha Team as a medic!

What a call

Fire & Rescue Shifters: First Mission prequel
By Zoe Chant
Kindle unlimited purchase
This is meant to be read as a prequel to the Fire and Rescue series. There is only 8 chapters in this book. So it's a very short read able to be read on a coffee break. It's Dai's first call out as a firefighter and it's the typical cat up a tree call. There is no mate/love interest in this book just a great story about the cat. Something to remind the reader that not everything is as it seams.

I was on a Sci Fi binge now I am on a Paranormal shifter binge and that is how I came across Zoe's books. Once I find an author whose books I like I will read them all and let me tell you Zoe has a lot. They are quick and easy reads. Some serious some make me laugh but all have danger and fated mates.
I enjoy paranormal stories as they take you away from everyday life and anything goes.

Short and Sweet

This is a perfect short story the goes along with the fire and rescue series. If you’re think of reading Zoe Chant’s Fire and Rescue series I strongly suggest starting with this cute prequel. This is a lovely story about fated mates and not all fire fighter jobs include burning buildings. So worth my time.

I have read every book in this series and it is one of my favorite series from this author. And this novella is so adorable. It's their first mission and also reveals how they meet Hugh. I loved the little romance in the story too. So short but sweet and a wonderful taster for the series as a whole.

This is a fun prequel to the Fire and Rescue Shifters series. New member of the Alpha team Dai is sent to rescue a kitty in a tree, which he thinks is a tame first assignment. He finds out otherwise, and needs to call for back up.
This story included humor, a mystery , sexy firefighters , and a sweet reunion!

A fantastic read

I absolutely love this series, and this book was no exception. Although I have enjoyed all of this authors work that I've read so far (which is many), this is one of my favorite series. The Fire & Rescue Wildfire Crew is as well, and I really hope to see more of it soon!
I would definitely recommend this book, series, and outstanding author.

First Mission is the prequel to the Fire & Rescue Shifters series by Zoe Chant.

Dai has just started working with the firefighters and learns firsthand how great it feels to help someone. What starts out as a boring first call, turns into a heartwarming reunion that he and the other shifters are able to make happen.

Sweet short story/fast read.

This was really cute love story and an introduction to the team.

Attending a call for a cat up a tree, the guys end up with a cat shifter who can't shift. A little mystery to solve leads to her missing mate.

The guys take a back seat to this story, but they'll get their story in the rest of the series.

Short but sweet.

Nice story

I like happy endings. I bought this because I wanted to see the writing style. I will buy another to see if Ms Chant's works don't devolve into the overly descriptive works that other shifter writers seem to think are entertaining

Loved this sweet story of how the Alpha Squad started. And that fiesta cat that gave them a run for their money as they worked to rescue it. So funny. Definitely a must read!
