This devilish player, however, won’t take no for an answer.A dangerous game…As passions run deep, Lex discovers this innocent beauty is more than he bargained for. But who will be the winner in this game of cat and mouse? Or will they both lose?
When I saw this book and the black woman on the page I was so excited like finally an interacial novel that shows on the cover but it got bad. And I wanted to finish it because maybe it could change my first impression from the begining.
Let's just start from top, the H was a d*ck who claimed that "all women were whores" and he was bored of it. That really struck a core within me but I kept on going. Then he placed a bet with his friends to prove his point. Then outta nowhere the n word was mentioned and I was like "Oh hell no!" but I kept going. And the spelling mistakes tho,smh like even I can edit the book and detect it.
Then the H main aim was to break the h heart but he fell "in love" with her and she loved him too and it was just everywhere. Like within two weeks they were a couple and at chapter 20 whilst the book had over 40 chapters. I couldn't continue this book and I'm giving 2 stars for effort because I know this is a new writer and hopefully will get better.
But THIS BOOK WAS NOT IT!!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Whew. I sat on this review for 2 days because I needed it to marinate. I usually leave reviews bit not ones with spoilers but there was no way around it. This needs to be said. This book had potential to be good but it wasn't all that. Several things...this was listed as interracial erotica. IT. WAS. NOT. So if you are going to read thinking its erotica...put it back sis. The basis behind this story was childish but I couldsee it happening. However, the main character has a "disability" and somehow the writer turns her into the most naive main character I have eve witnessed. I mean...Disney princess naive. You would think she was more a young teen that grown woman. There were lots of twist in it. That helped the storyline. It was long. The N word was used. And.....the errors. I mean....I will volunteer as an arc reader to reduce the errors. The main vharacter had her guard up 70% of the book and then all of a sudden in 24 hours they are in love. Like...a sickening....I LOVE YOU every other page love. It was most unbelievable. It was just..not it. I thank the author for putting her time and effort into this but...no.
A good debut book. There were so editing errors but overall the book was good. The storyline kept my attention. Some people are born a monster, others are created. Sometimes it's difficult to determine which is which. Ms. Evans draws the reader into the underside of wealthy society. Get ready to run the gamut of emotions...anger, sadness, fear, and happiness. I look forward to the author's next book.
2.50 Stars. ((BW/WM). Kindle Unlimited e-book. Unromantic. Drama ladened. Tiresome story. Alexander "Lex" Davenport, despite being physically and sexually abused as a child, grew to head his family's multi billion dollar international corporation before his 30th birthday; however, he did not escape his childhood unscathed, he became cynical, abrasive and distrustful of women in particular and relationships in general which were outside is aging grandfather, aunt, and two male best friends. Lex and his other 2 billionaire besties were womanizers who reeked havoc in general and would make bets on their ability to deceive and get away with outlandish pranks. Jamie Collins aside from being a 24-year-old virgin, teaches hearing impaired children and his herself hearing impaired. Jamie and her 18-year-old sister, are Lex's beloved Aunt Fiona's goddaughters and when their mother died who was Aunt Fiona's sweetheart and best friend, the two came to live with Fiona. Lex and Jamie get together because Aunt Fiona asked him to show Jamie around town this suited Lex because he had bet his friends that if their were any virgin women left, he be able to seduce her in short order because a woman would do whatever it took to entrap a wealthy man. Lex's and Jamie's unromantic romance stems from this and weaves very predictably through her psychopathic ex, one of her friends wanting to be more and her finding out about the beat and his repeated self berating apologies and family drama with his dysfunctional money hungry mother who neglected him as a child. Jamie and Lex end in an unromantic committed relationship.
Omg this book was awesome, I laughed and tried. I got angry, and walked away to collect my feelings. This book has it all. I truly didn't want it to end. Lex was a total prick. But honestly he was justify by the way he acted. I loved Jamie so much, so sweet, so innocent. Lex the monster entered her life thinking. He would used and discarded her. But fate had other plans. He lost big time. A Must read.
Really good substantial read. There are so many monsters in the world some are born that way and some are made but sometimes love can conquer all sometimes not. There were some wrong words and extra words, needed some editing tweaks but good story line it held my interest. I will read this Authors work and recommend this book.
Hmm.. where do I start. Well, the most obvious conclusion is that the story had lot of potential. The setting was good enough. The characters could have grown so much throughout the story (but they didn't at least one didn't)
I hate to say it but I didn't find any real sizzling chemisty between Lex and J. There was a lot of telling and towards the end some actions too but there was something missing because I didn't feel it through the pages, you know...
The story was 80% vanilla and then the 20% was "dark" which didn't fit well because the switch was sudden and there was no slow build up. Even though their was enough material for it to be very "dark" in a satisfying way.
I did enjoy reading it though but, I feel it could have been so much better.
Alexander "Lex" Davenport and his best friends have always been rich and entitled. Over the years Lex and his friends have made things between them interesting with wagers.... Now Lex is bored again and they set a new wager... something different.... and Jamie Collins is the one. After all Lex has always had his pick of women, they're either gold diggers or liars and Jamie will be no different.
But Jamie is different.
Jamie Collins & her sister moved in with their God mother until they found their own place; she wasn't used to the lifestyle her God mother lived. Lavish parties, a big mansion, all the riches. That wasn't her world; especially given her disability.
When Lex starts to show interest in Jamie she's not interested. He can't be interested in her... she's the complete opposite of him. She will never fit in his world... but Lex pursues Jamie with gusto believing she'll be an easy conquest and he will win his bet. The more time he spends with her the more he believes she's faking her innocence.... but slowly he begins to change his thinking. Just when they finally admit they have feelings the world falls apart... there's a kidnapping, and murder and hospital. What if it's all too late for Lex and Jamie? ------------- This story started out slow... snail's pace... By the end there was so much action. To be honest the ending wasn't what I was expecting and it felt a little disjointed from the rest of the story.
Lex was an assh@le with a capital A. He had no redeeming qualities. Every time he opened his mouth, I was annoyed, disturbed, and wanted to stop reading.
Jaime was a beautiful soul. She was pure, sweet, and innocent. Lex and his buddies made a disgusting bet to win her affection and her virginity.
But karma is a b!tch. He did not simply fall, but nosedived into love with Jaime. And Lex discovered that in breaking her heart he hurt himself too.
The author weaved a very complex and captivating story with characters that had multiple layers. Excellent read.
The Game was by far one of the best books I have ever read and it's my one to beat this year.
The author takes you on an intense journey from start to finish. Shae Evans truly knows how to tell a story. I loved the imagery created, it made me feel like I was apart of the story I could clearly see it in my head.
I am looking forward to reading more from the author.
This is an excellent story that set up room for several more excellent stories. I loved to see what happens to the 2 friends, auntie/godmother and the little sister.
I loved this book from beginning til the end. The only thing I get mad at is why does the sista always have to get hurt. But it really did tie into everything so it was worth me staying up until 3 am
Well worth the 5 stars, Am really happy with the way things ended for Carson, Nancy and Lucinda. Lex and Jamie deserve their HEA. I highly recommend buying this book. Great job Ms. Shea Evans, I hope to see more of you work soon
I discovered this author on Wattapad where I first read "The Game" and I enjoyed this story, it could stand a good proofread and edit but you'll love to hate the male lead.
The book started well but went downhill afterwards. I know Jamie is only 25 but the author overdid the sheltered naive girl. The recurrent talk of the bet got really tiresome. Yes it was in poor taste but there was no need for him to berate himself about it so much. To be honest knowing how much of a psychopath her ex was, why would she demand to know the truth in public ? As for Lex, yes he was a jerk and clearly needed therapy after all he had to deal with in his life. He was jaded and taking his pain out on every body else. However, let’s not forget that he came to his senses, canceled that bet and matured. Yes he needed to apologize, however the whole being undeserving was irritating in the end. Jamie was no saint so the pedestal that they kept wanting to put her on got old. She actually never thanked him for saving her life. Lex tried to tell her about the bet and she insisted that the past was the past. Clearly it wasn’t. The book was supposed to be a romance novel but they was actually very little romance. It felt like a missed opportunity to really explore a relationship between an hearing impaired person and a non deaf one. I know that Lex is not bothered by other people opinions, however he is very wealthy and has responsibilities, it would have been nice to read about how they navigated their life together. She’s obsessed with the « simple life » but to a certain extent that’s not going to be possible with a Davenport. Lastly, I found Kendall really annoying. She’s not her sisters keeper. Actually she should have been grateful enough to Lex as he rescued her sister, to at least be cordial. I wished Lex checked her from the beginning. The only person he owed an explanation to is Jamie.
So…our cynical manwhore hero Lex thinks all women are the same because of childhood trauma/abuse - that they're only after his money/success -and therefore treats them like dirt after sleeping with them. Out of boredom, he makes a bet This is my first read by this author, and I'm curious about her other works - unfortunately(for me), I think there are only two more books written by this author.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
When I first came across this book, I wasn’t sure based on some of the reviews. I’m glad I gave it shot because I actually enjoy it quite a bit!
Lex and his friends make a bet that he can seduce an “innocent” woman and show that all women are the same. Enter his aunt’s goddaughter Jamie, and Lex quickly realizes this is more than a bet.
There are a host of side characters, some good, some bad, but all adding their own thing to the story.
I wished we would’ve seen just a little bit more of them together before she found out about the bet but I still enjoyed seeing Jamie being Lex out of cynicism. Even with her naïveté I just loved her, and although I was nervous in the beginning, Lex definitely grew on me.
My biggest gripe were the grammatical errors, most of the time I can just overlook them, especially for newer authors but there were quite a few. An editor or even a beta reader could’ve helped.
That being said I still thoroughly enjoyed the story and wished there was an epilogue to check back in with Lex and Jamie.
Whew Chile….. this book right here…. I don’t know if I can even articulate what I feel about this book. I really didn’t know what to expect from the title but baby that don’t even scratch the surface. Lex was a heartless pompous arrogant bastard who makes a bet with his friends out of boredom. He goes to his aunt house and set his set on Jamie. What he didn’t expect was Jamie being the game changer. Now when I tell you this book had the crazies!!! Oh the crazies came out in this book. From the crazy stalker ex boyfriend to the crazy abusive mother!! Now Lex mother was a trip!! I would have put a bullet in between her eyes! That was a heartless woman!! She definitely deserves what she got!! Back to Lex and Jamie. Now Lex deserves ever but of Jamie’s anger because that was just wrong!! Again though Jamie was the Game changer and Lex didn’t have a chance.
There's levels to the good and not so great about this book. Lex bets his friends he could pull a virgin and Jamie just so happens to be one and is within reach. She's shy and partially deaf except for the hearing aid she wears in her right ear. It turns out, Lex bit off more than he could chew and develops genuine feelings for Jamie. All for her to find out from her crazy ex-boyfriend that Lex had the bet in the first place. Breakup and hurt feelings ensue. Sigh. Crazy ex-boyfriend captures and beats Jamie until she almost dies. Sigh. Jamie and Lex eventually get back together. More sighs. I guessed really early about the romantic relationship between the girls' mother and their godmother Aunt Fiona. Too, the other guy who got stuck in the friend zone was also apparent. It was just really predictable. What wasn't predictable however was when the book took a grave turn around the 80% mark when Lex tortures the ex following Jamie's brutalization at the ex's hands, Lex's molestation by his nanny when he was a kid was exposed, and then how his check mates his mom and gets her committed to a mental institution, and finally, Lex gets his former abuser sent to a trafficking location. I honestly couldn't understand why his mother called the abuser in the first place. In any case, Lex started off callous in the beginning before we saw a different side to him as he got caught up in Jamie but the book definitely took an unexpectedly dark turn with those events. It was almost like reading a completely different book. I did like that Kendall and Jamie were close and how different their personalities were. Aunt Fiona was sweet for the most part except when she's fighting her sister, also Lex's horrible mother.
Word usage, grammar, and consistently. All salvageable with a good editor but really with how many issues there were, it was distracting.
I thought the idea was great, cliche but with a twist, then it all went downhill from there... SPOILERS
Lex is not a good dude, he's a selfish prick with no redeeming qualities. He assaulted he with a kiss unprovoked and Jamie's just like sure, let's forget that happened. Also Jamie is dumb. Like she made the worst decisions for the dumbest reasons like why did you think seeing Carson everywhere was coincidence but also why didn't you tell your rich aunt right away. Just stupid. Also she couldn't really get over the fancy that her being partially deaf was a hindrance when NO ONE around her made her feel that way.
Elliott had the potential to be a solid competitor but the author made his character so weak.
Also since if the writing seemed out of character for the character at times, especially when Carson got his due... It alienist turned into a charicature.
Carson's parents were also stupid for no reason like you're son murdered a whole person and you thought he was for for society?
Don't even get me started on Lucinda smdh. Evil people exist of course but damn was she one note the whole time. It was like the author was like let me write the stereotypical iteration of a terrible mom and hope people hate her because she checks all the boxes.
Honestly the book had characters I would've enjoyed reading about if they hadn't lacked so much depth. It's like I'm the author told me how to feel by saying "feel angry now" instead of it coming about organically based on the story unfolding. I'm not sure if that makes sense but skip it, the sex scenes read like bad porn and the younger sister was probably the only reason I gave her another star. I would've much rather read about her than the main.
The synopsis intrigued and I enjoyed much of the first half book. I'd like to read stories about his friends.
***spoiler***
Had I known she was a virgin, I probably would have skipped this book. The way authors tend to write them are so cliche. They treat them like being a virgin is synonymous with shyness, other worldly niceness, kindness, childlike inherently good and naive when all it actually means is that s/he hasn't found anyone that they want to have sex with yet. Its almost like back-handed slut shaming. You can still be a non gold digging, caring, compassionate person and still have had sex before.
I know that he was getting revenge for his lady love but he almost seemed as bad as Carson at one point. That would have given me pause more than the bet. Like who is this person? Is he wanna be Mafia? It seemed uncharacteristic for him and his friends. Although, I see him throwing money at someone who could -doing it himself seemed an odd choice for his character development.
Its' really hard for me to acknowledge that your a new writer, your work was that of one who has honed their craft and cleaned up their act as they progressed...
At no point were you lazy or found wanting in your writing - everything was fresh, flowing, consistent, invested
I felt the romance, it was believable, consuming...
At no point did I feel like the romance became a secondary factor, like I usually do with books that cover a bit of espionage, you kept us in the loop of how Lex was feeling at all times during the break-up - he was drinking, angry -things like that keep the romance as the primary element of the story and I applaud you for this...
Another round of applaud for not degrading women of other races just to amplify your own (ours) too many times writers make that mistake and forget each race is beautiful in their own way... this will diversify your audience....
I read Ms Evans’ debut novel and enjoyed the twisted tale and knew that she was an author I wanted to follow. Her first novel was good but The Game is incredible. Lex and his silly friends bet that he couldn’t find an innocent woman to seduce. Jamie has recently come to live with her godmother….who just happens to be Lex’s aunt. Jamie is exactly the type of woman Lex is looking for….shy, innocent, sheltered, and too good for him. She is hearing impaired and reserved. Before he knows what has hit him, Lex has tumbled into love. But the couple has so many BARRIERS… Jamie has a stalker and ANOTHER guy vying for her attention Lex is a real JERK Lex has serious trauma from his childhood The bet….what will happen when Jamie learns the truth? Ms Evans takes all of these disparate issues and concocts a delightful, twisty romance. There were some typos….missing words or the use of the wrong word…..but they were minor and did not subtract from this amazing story!
This was an very amazing, romantic, suspenseful, down right interesting book. It tackled sooo much in perfect amount of time. The climax was everything and more and I loved how the author gave us hints but also saved the best for last. I freaking love the main characters lex and Jamie. Jamie is a beautiful soul who is also a very strong heroine. Also her being death and a teacher at a deaf academy just added more to her character. Lex definitely had to grow on you lol but he came around quicker than a thought he would. His friends we’re also questionable characters but I liked how they were supportive of their relationship (even though she was a bet at first). It’s sooo much to this book and it seemed like every character had a freaking secret that unraveled. I kept saying “ whattt…Th this is crazy…. There more?!” Hahaha. I Love this new author she’s done a very good job with this book and I will definitely be re-reading this one!
OMG what a book. Shae Evans put her heart and soul into this book!!! Lex, having grown up with his demonic and delusional mother who sent him to boarding school to be molested by Ms Potter, seemed to be a psychopath but controlled. By definition, Carson Baird was a sociopath, who kills unprovoked and for no reason. Carson got his just due at the hands of Lex. Lex also had Ms Potter sent to a brothel probably in Mexico since she said they all spoke Spanish. He had his mother committed to a psychiatric facility and the way she’s acting she will be there a long time! Lex realized that he loved Jamie, especially when he almost lost her at the hands of Carson. But after all the suspense there is a beautiful happy ending; Lex asks Jamie to marry him and she said yes. This is definitely a must read. It’s exciting, sad, you will cry, be angry, you’ll be happy, at the end.
I liked some parts of this story. I liked that the woman was not perfect, and a man still saw her worth. In most cases, the woman is accepting of the man's imperfections and not vice versa.
I thought Lex had some serious hate issue for women. He categorized all women because of the behaviors of a few. I am glad that he was able to see that not all women are the same. I hate it cost him his relationship. I almost wished that Jamie made him sweat before taking him back.
Jamie was independent and well-rounded. She found her way in the world despite her shortcomings. I liked her. I also liked that she wasn't influenced by the money around her. I liked that she remained grounded and focus on herself and her sister.
I wish the author would have explored the history of Jamie's mother and Lex's aunt. That would have been interesting.
The concept seemed like a good story line but no. 1. Wayy too drawn out 2. Needs a MASSIVE trauma warnings. Seems like the author herself may need some psychological help for the unnecessary impulse to be horrific for horrific sake. 3. Typos out the wazoo. Like really really bad. The h was put through grotesque abuse that literally wasn’t discussed at all by her or the H once she healed. Umm ok. 4. The naïveté of the heroine was so annoying. She’s hearing impaired, not 12. Im all for punishing child abusers but really?! This was brutally over the top and really just ridiculous. I hope the author continues to hone her craft as she seems to have some potential, but I would highly encourage her to tone it down like 90%.
This is my first novel by this author. I'm definitely going to re read this because this was intense. The sub plots of murder, abduction, child abuse, mental illness and disabilities were out of this world. It made me pause and think. Its amazing how she intwines those elements into a story of this caliber.
If I have anything negative to say, it would be that I thought the FMC's injuries were too minor. But, that's just me. Overall, a truly gripping story that combines so many elements of darkness and depravity and contrasts them against purity and light. Well written and I highly recommend. I'm looking forward to reading other works by this author.
