A World Book Day 2021 story from Zanib Mian with hilarious cartoon-style illustrations. Laugh out loud with Omar and his amazing imagination! Perfect for fans of Tom Gates and Wimpy Kid.
One of Omar's best friends, Daniel, has a little sister who goes to hospital regularly. He usually finds it easy to cheer her up when she's there, but this time he feels he needs to do something extra special.
Enter Omar and their other best friend Charlie to help with Operation Kind! The boys try to come up with the perfect surprise for Suzy, and when they find out her favourite author is in the UK for just one day it feels like it was meant to be.
Can the boys overcome all of the ridiculous obstacles that get thrown in their path and face their fears, in a race against time to get a signed copy of the book for Suzy?
Zanib grew up in London, UK. She began writing stories and poetry when she was just a little girl, and was well known by her teachers, friends, and family to rhyme about anything that meant something to her. If you’re lucky, she will allow you to see some of her writing, which she has kept safe for over twenty five years! But you might have to visit her in her little Hobbit house in the Shire to see it!
Another great Planet Omar book! A nice short but fun adventure story about Omar and his friends as they go on an adventure to Scotland to try and get a signed copy of a book for Daniel’s little sister who is ill in hospital. There are nice themes of friendship and family throughout the book. There are also links to the Muslim faith, a great way to educate children and promote diversity within the classroom. This would be a good book for children just beginning to read novels as it is short and the pages include lots of pictures and different fonts and sizes of text. A fun story with lots of positive themes to explore with children.
Another really sweet addition to the Omar stories. Zanib manages to be so inclusive with seemingly minimal effort and puts to shame those who make it so explicit that it can get in the way of a good story. In celebration of World Book Day, Zanib is helping his friend get a book signed by his sister's favourite author since she's poorly. An against-the-time trip from London to Scotland ensues a heart-warming close at the end. All are supported by fun illustrations from Mafaridik and Cheng. I do love these stories.
This story's about a young called Omar and him, his friends and his parents and Omar's friend's sister was ill so to make her feel happier they all go from london to Scotland to get a book signed by her favorite author just to see that the author wasn't there but when they got back to London they went to the hospital 🏥 they saw the author by the friend's sister's hospital bed.
My favorite character is Omar because he's always full of energy and is always kind
Lost some motivation to read since I returned to school so this short story published for World Book Day 2021 was really great. I love the characters personalities and how they work together to perform “Operation Kind”. It has a double meaning in which is a clever way of titling the book. I am impressed by the fact that it’s a diverse book written by someone of another religion and different beliefs to me. Yet it’s so lighthearted and fun for children. In fact, as I was researching the author, I discovered that the main book series of “Planet Omar” and other books have featured in The Guardian and BBCs CBeebies Bedtime Stories for their contribution to diversity in children’s literature. What an extraordinary shift in modern society and literature. Great fun to read and only took me 27 minutes. Four stars from me ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
When Daniel’s sister Suzy has to go into hospital for an operation, Daniel recruits Omar and his dad, Charlie and Maryam to assist him in Operation Kind. Suzy’s favourite author is appearing at a book signing and nothing would cheer her up as much as a signed book. The only trouble is that the book signing is happening in Glasgow, over four hours away by train. Will they make it in time?
The events of the day are told in an endearing manner. This is a short book, written especially for World Book Day so doesn’t have too much depth. Great for LKS2 readers.
A heart-warming book about an adventure with Omar and his friends. My 3-year-old loved me reading this to him and kept asking for another chapter! It is great as a transition between picture books and pictureless books with black and white pictures and/ or cool typewriting on every page. Also a great way to ensure diversity in reading for children. A huge thank you to the author for that! ❤️
Fun MG story about a race across country to get a gift to cheer up a poorly little sister. Great slapstick humour, empathetic and a lovely depiction of the importance authors and books have in children's lives.
Read to check vocab for my Y7 class. Really good story, especially for Muslim children. Really appreciated the multicultural aspect, as I know my students will. This will be popular with the boys!
This series is brilliant and Zanib Mian is an amazing author! Even before reading, I thought I would enjoy this story as a quick, fun read, but with it being so short in length, I didn't expect it to have same impact as the full-length books in the series. Think again! It was just as funny, positive and wonderful as the other Omar books.
Omar is hands down one of the best characters I've ever read and I love that I get to share his stories with my class. We laugh together at the funny bits, my Muslim children relate to things Omar shares about his religion and share their own stories, my non-Muslim children learn new information and respectfully ask questions, we all admire Omar's courage and kindness. He is such a positive and relatable role model for my students.
In this story, Omar and his best friends Daniel and Charlie are on a mission to get a book signed by famous author, Angelina Kind. (Even just finding out the reason they want to get a signed copy was enough to make my eyes watery. I can't make it through one of these books without crying!) The adventure they go on is filled with unexpected challenges, which test them all in different ways. I loved following their journey and I felt their pain every time another thing went wrong. The way the story ended was brilliant and linked very cleverly to everything leading up to it. The whole story was a rush of heartwarming emotions, followed by feeling sorry for a character, indispersed with lots of laughter and I loved it!
Recommend for anyone looking for a little spark of joy. Particularly suitable for 7 - 9 year olds.
This is the only book I've read in the Planet Omar series so far, but it has made me want to read the rest of them. Omar's best friend's sister has to have an operation, so Omar and his friends team up to get her favourite author to sign her books for her. It's a heartwarming story, and if it inspires each of its readers to do a good deed and to prioritise kindness, it will make the world a slightly better place.
Having never met Omar before I was overjoyed to find a kid who has supportive parents, is trying to do the right thing for someone else and overcomes his own fears. It was a great little story that I highly enjoyed as it uses elements rarely seen in other books to make for an amazing story overall. I was dragged into the ups and downs and am glad to see such a great WBD book!
