Commander of the fierce air warriors of Sky’s End, Major “Hawk” Hakkim comes to Earth with his team of unmated pilots, 4 males and 1 female, to participate in a program named Project Sky Mates. The incredible Dragon warships of Hawk’s people were eons old, the legacy of a mysterious, more technologically advanced past. Dragons needed two pilots to fly them, a bonded pair—Sky Mates. But matches had become rare. That was why this program was so important to them.
His Earth liaison is fighter pilot/instructor Captain Kelly “Crackers” Ritz. Even without meeting face-to-face, Hawk feels something in their text interactions that energize him; and to a sky warrior, “synergy” was everything!
Kelly heard their ships flying toward them now. The part-cyborg sky warriors were said to be the best aviators in the galaxy, genetically modified and bioengineered to interface with their ships. Their top warcraft were so advanced flying them was possible only with a bonded pair, Sky Mates, who were soul mates working in tandem, tethered mentally and emotionally to each other and their ship. This program is their attempt to find ideal mates among the Earth pilots who will have the qualities the aliens need so they can work alongside the warriors’ on their missions. And the pairing is for life. Kelly watched the 6 ships coming over the mountain in formation, everything absolutely perfect. They flew really low, and as the air traffic controllers started to panic, the six ships flipped tight and close into an upside down roll in perfect formation as they switched to vertical and soared skyward. As her commander chewed her out for the aliens’ performance, demanding they follow Top Gun school rules like everyone, the ships gracefully landed, once again perfect! Their “show” was meant as a sign of respect toward the Terrans. But only the Warriors knew that.
Kelly was amazed to see the warriors standing next to their Raptor ships, true supersoldiers with long silver hair and body-hugging black armor. They were serious and dignified, professional, not like the pilots who had just buzzed the tower! She took them all to the local bar to meet everyone. She even talked Hawk into dancing. Not only did he catch on effortlessly, but he read even the smallest body language from her and responded to it, as if he read her mind and carried out the move she had thought about. He had synced with Kelly, a very important connection where their minds linked and connected! But they could not sync because that connection required a bonded pair, Sky Mates, and he could not be that! Finding a mate for himself had not been an issue, especially since DNA testing showed no match for him on Earth. Yet he and Kelly had a definite connection with each other! Could it somehow be possible that he could claim her as his Sky Mate? All the signs are there … although DNA testing had showed no match existed for Hawk, what could it mean that Hawk and Kelly feel Sky Mate synergy between them?
This was such an excellent story line. I was enraptured from the start and enjoyed Hawk and his team mingling in the Terran culture. After Hawk and Kelly had danced perfectly together, I laughed out loud when she turned to find the team in front of her, wanting lessons! It was so adorable! This is my new favorite series and you will absolutely love it!
